Wolfbrandt, Anna. "AC losses in HTS as a function of magnetic fields with arbitrary directions." Doctoral thesis, KTH, Electrical Systems, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-35.

Full text
Abstract:

Although a superconductor has zero resistivity when carrying a direct current, losses do occur when it is exposed to an alternating magnetic field and/or is carrying an alternating current. The magnitude of these so-called AC losses depends on the operating temperature, the amplitude and the direction of the magnetic field, the transport current, and the frequency. Therefore, the use of high-temperature superconductors, HTSs, in electric power components such as cables, transformers or reactors, requires knowledge of the AC losses.

This thesis deals with the development of AC loss models for HTSs, mainly for Bi-2223 tapes. In particular, the orientation of the applied magnetic field is taken into account in the modelling. The basis for the models is the results of experimental investigations.

The basic concepts of HTSs with special emphasis on the modelling of AC losses are presented. These can be broken down into several components. Their sources and natures are described. One of the components is the hysteretic loss and it is the dominating loss in AC applications at power frequencies. Therefore, the other loss components are neglected in the modelling.

Models are presented and the associated parameters are investigated with respect to their dependence of the magnetic field as well as the temperature. The AC losses for parallel and perpendicular magnetic field with respect to the wide side of the tape are calculated numerically. Moreover, a semi-empirical model for intermediate angels of the applied magnetic field is proposed. The comparisons show good agreement with experimental results.

Keywords: High-temperature superconductors, AC loss modelling, hysteresis, E-J characteristic.

Nel, Jolene. "Home characteristics, nonwork–work interference and well–being of dual earner parents / Nel, J." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7046.

Full text
Abstract:
Emotional home demands, cognitive home demands, home pressure, development possibilities, autonomy, social support, nonwork–work interference, spouse–work interference, parent–work interference, religion/spiritual–work interference, domestic–work interference, health, exhaustion, cognitive weariness, life satisfaction, dual earner parents Dual earner parents have become the norm in today’s workplace (Weigel, Weigel, Berger, Cook, & Delcampo, 1995). Dual earner parents face many challenging roles that they have to try to balance; these include being a parent, spouse, employee, being involved in religious practices and juggling domestic responsibilities. According to Duxbury and Higgins (1991), it is very difficult for such parents to balance their various roles and multiple demands. All these challenging demands (home characteristics) can cause nonwork–interference which can, in turn, lead to well–being problems (Magnus & Viswesvaran, 2005). The general objective of this study is to investigate the home characteristics, nonwork–work interference and well–being of a sample of dual earner parents. A convenience sample of dual earner parents (N=207) was taken in the Vaal Triangle area in Gauteng. The following scales was used within this study: the Home Demands Scale (Peeters et al., 2005), Home Resources Scale (Demerouti et al., 2010); the Work–nonwork Interference Scale (Koekemoer, Mostert, & Rothmann, 2010); the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) (Goldberg, & Williams, 1988); and the OLBI (Oldenburg Burnout Inventory) Scale measuring exhaustion, Cognitive weariness (Van Horn et al., 2004); and life satisfaction (Diener et al., 1985). Descriptive statistics, Cronbach alpha coefficients, product moment correlations and multiple regression analyses were used to analyse the data. The results indicated that emotional home demands and lack of autonomy significantly predict physical ill health; emotional home demands and spouse–work interference significantly predict anxiety; and emotional home demands significantly predict depression. Gender, home pressure, developmental possibilities and parent–work interference were, in turn, significant predictors of exhaustion. Recommendations were made for future research and also, on a more practical level, for dual earner parents. One of the recommendations is that one needs to investigate the possible cross–over and spillover effects of work–nonwork interference between wives and husbands. Another is to investigate the positive side of work–nonwork interference.
Thesis (M.Com. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Abstract:

This project is an extension of a pre-existing simulation program (‘Simulation_2dioden’). This simulation program was first developed in Konarka Technologies. The main purpose of the project ‘Simulation_2dioden’ is to calibrate the values of different parameters like, Shunt resistance, Series resistance, Ideality factor, Diode current, epsilon, tau, contact probability, AbsCT, intensity, etc; This is one of the curve fitting procedure’s. This calibration is done by using different equations. Diode equation is one of the main equation’s used in calculating different currents and voltages, from the values generated by diode equation all the other parameters are calculated.

The reason for designing this simulation_2dioden is to calculate the values of different parameters of a device and the researcher would know which parameter effects more in the device efficiency, accordingly they change the composition of the materials used in the device to acquire a better efficiency. The platform used to design this project is ‘Microsoft Excel’, and the tool used to design the program is ‘Visual basics’. The program could be otherwise called as a ‘Virtual Solar cell’. The whole Virtual Solar cell is programmed in a single excel sheet.

An Automated working solution is suggested which could save a lot of time for the researchers, which is the main aim of this project. To calibrate the parameter values, one has to load the J-V characteristics and simulate the program by just clicking one button. And the parameters extracted by using this automated simulation are Parallel resistance, Series resistance, Diode ideality, Saturation current, Contact properties, and Charge carrier mobility.

Finally, a basic working solution has been initiated by automating the simulation program for calibrating the parameter values.

MontalvanLinarte, Valentina, and 范婷妮. "A Numerical Study on the Aerodynamic Characteristic of a Modern J-31 Fighter Jet." Thesis, 2019. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/qkaft4.

Full text
Abstract:
107
Modern fighter jets are some of the most sophisticated and complex machines ever built and understanding their aerodynamic behavior is of great interest to improve flying performance and cost reduction design. The present study was devised to analyze the characteristics that fighter jets’ wings experience when flying at subsonic and supersonic conditions. This study was divided into two parts, as follows: The first part of this study investigated the vortex formation on a 65-degree delta wing with a blunt leading edge at subsonic conditions. To this effect, a NASA’s wind tunnel experiment done to this same wing configuration in the Langley National Transonic Facility (NTF) was used as a reference to perform a numerical study using computational fluid dynamic techniques. Later, both results, the experimental and the numerical analysis were compared to validate the CFD techniques employed to apply these CFD procedures to a full-scale J-31 jet fighter. Upon completion of the first case, CFD techniques were employed to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics encountered on a J-31 jet fighter when flying at 1.2 Mach including vortex formation and shock waves by analyzing its lift, drag, and pressure coefficient.

Full text
Abstract:
101
Due to their low cost fabrication and relatively high conversion efficiencies, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) receive a primary attention in this study. The main objectives are threefold. One is applying one-diol equivalent circuit model over the current density-voltage (J-V) curves obtained from the literature. The other one is to use the previous model to examine the graphene-containing electrode in DSSCs. The last one is to evaluate the DSSCs with via electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) data. The modeling of electric parameters in J-V curve makes use of non-linear regression. Results show that the cells efficiency is higher as the series resistance (Rs) becoming lower and the ideal factor (A) approaching one. Various ratios of graphene/TiO2 composites were prepared for working electrodes in DSSCs to examine their efficient. Also, modeling the electric parameter of an equivalent circuit was implemented. Experimental results showed that the optimal capacity was the ratio of 0.2‰, which has a conversion efficiency of 6.65%. This is higher than the electrode without graphene. In order to compare of carbon-based working electrode, the same ratio of carbon nanotube/TiO2 composite was also prepared to examine its performance. Replacement of graphene with carbon nanotube gave no beneficial effect on the efficiency. Apparently, electrons transportations are different between these two allotropes, and this difference may ascribe to their different geometric structure. Modeling results indicated not only have the great light generated current density (Jg) and reverse saturation current density (J0) but also get the similar magnitudes of shunt resistances for the present graphene/TiO2 electrodes. The enhancement in efficiency of graphene-containing electrodes was rationalized in terms of increases of electronic transportation paths with incorporation of small amount of graphene. Finally, EIS data were simulated by series circuit and parallel circuit. Resistance parameter were evaluated. The transport resistance (Rw) in graphene/TiO2 electrode is smaller than carbon nanotube/TiO2. It is concluded that the parallel circuit system more applicable for the present electrodes than the series circuit system.

Abstract:
98
In Taiwan, Semiconductor industry, also known as semiconductor industry, is a luminous device made of semiconductor materials. The semiconductor industry is one of the most competitive products in the industry. The object of this study is the personnel at J International Inc. in the semiconductor industry, aiming at understanding the correlation between personnel’s job characteristics and work pressure by means of empirical study. From this research, we hope to infer a workable policy that is built on both theory and practice to deal with the issue, and by this research, we hope to offer reference for similar industries in the future and evidence for further research. The participants of the study are the employees from 5 departments of Pan Jit International Inc, including R&D Department, Q.C. Department, Wafer Department, Production of packaging Department, and Administration Department. 539 questionnaires were distributed, and 502 responses were collected, amongst which were 475 valid responses. The valid response rate is 88%. This research adopts descriptive statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient methods and finds: 1. In semiconductor industry, the personnel’s background variable affects the job characteristics. 2. In semiconductor industry, the personnel’s background variable partially affects the work pressure. 3. Job characteristics is related to work pressure. This study suggests at the end that when supervisors are designing work, they should take into account whether the employees have sufficient knowledge about the job, and also intensify employee training to let them understand what skills are required for certain work. In addition, set up clear performance standards lest the employees need to speculate how to get better work performance, which might cause pressure. Designing appropriate scope of work, providing moderate work pressure, offering work training, and learning more about one’s job can reduce overladen work pressure can enhance work efficacy and performance.

Caldwell, Christine Sego. "IMAGINING THE OTHER: THE POSSIBILITIES AND LIMITS OF THE SYMPATHETIC IMAGINATION IN J. M. COETZEE’S RECENT FICTION." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/2710.

Full text
Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
In three of J. M. Coetzee’s recent novels, Disgrace (1999), Elizabeth Costello (2003), and Slow Man (2005), the South African author explores notions of authorship and challenges the possibilities of the sympathetic imagination. The notion of the sympathetic imagination has roots in Romanticism, and it connotes inhabiting another in order to understand or interpret. Romantic poet John Keats described the poet as “continually in for [sic] and filling some other body” (Letter to Richard Woodhouse), and Coetzee addresses the notion of the sympathetic imagination in his work. There are two facets of the sympathetic imagination: that which governs social relations and that which authors and creative minds attempt to claim as a driving force behind their work. It is important not to conflate the two separate facets of the sympathetic imagination. The social facet encourages good citizenship and allows humankind to behave in humane ways. It counters one’s private desire for mastery and balances self-interest with self-sacrifice; the sympathetic imagination helps others attain their goals and places others’ needs alongside one’s own selfishness. A sympathetic imagination is an essential quality in society, yet it will always yield only partial success. It cannot achieve complete success because truly inhabiting and embodying another living person is simply impossible, but in fiction, Coetzee explores the possibilities and limits of the sympathetic imagination at the level of language and metaphor. The other facet of the sympathetic imagination is often claimed by authors, poets, and artists to allow them to inhabit the subjects of their creativity. Coetzee tests the limits of authorial claims that writing is accomplished by applying a sympathetic imagination. In doing so, he creates metaphysical frames in which his own author-characters interact with other characters to reveal that some characters resist being written. In these metaphysical frames of fiction, Coetzee suggests that an author’s sympathetic imagination will never have total success; he sets forth a notion of partial success that helps address what is gained when the sympathetic imagination runs up against limits. My argument is that the authors and characters in these three novels attempt acts of sympathetic imagination and recurrently encounter limits. Coetzee questions perceived notions of authorship and the possibilities of the sympathetic imagination without offering alternatives. He critiques common notions of authorship and character writing but offers no real solutions.

Full text
Abstract:
100
An algorithm which extracts the substrate-resistance-free current-voltage (J-V) characteristics from large-area solar cells is proposed here. The effect of substrate resistance on device performance was also discussed. We apply the algorithm to a set of real data measured from the devices with various device areas. The extracted results are matched with the real data. Besides, the extracted results of all devices are almost identical. Both observations cement the validity of the proposed algorithm. The dependence of device performance and circuit-level parameters on the device length can be analyzed with this algorithm. Negative dependence of the power conversion efficiency (PCE), the short-circuit current (Jsc) and the fill factor (FF) of devices on the device length is observed while the open-circuit voltage (Voc) shows no dependence on the device length. This observed effect can be explained by the non-uniform potential distribution on the substrate. Finally, we used the algorithm to quantify the effect of the substrate resistance and short-circuit current on device performance. We found that increases in percentage change of PCE, Jsc, FF, Rs and Rsh as sheet resistance of substrate or short-circuit current increase. The percentage change of FF is the maximum value, so we can conclude that substrate resistance affects FF most.

Abstract:
Although verifying information and running backgrounds checks are common practices in most companies, the inclusion of practices such as social media screen or cibervetting, in the recruiting process, is still an unexplored theme, especially in Portugal. Therefore, this study aims to uncover if screening is a current practice in Portugal and which were the Social Media contents dimensions (Behaviours, Connections, Personal information, Textual and Visual information, Professional information and SNS presence), and characteristics of the applicants, which impacts the most, recruiters perceptions. Additionally, the hypothesis was tested with age, level of education and size of the company. We resorted to a quantitative method to gather the data and to IBM - SPSS, to analyse it. The results were obtained resorting to Spearman's correlation coefficient, which showed that online contents dimensions, has different influences on recruiter's perceptions. On the overall, the dimension "Behaviours" proved to negatively influence perceptions, while "Connections", "Personal information", "Textual and Visual information" and "SNS presence" displayed, on the majority, neither positively or negatively influence decisions, while "Professional information" was proved to positively influence recruiter’s perceptions. When analysing the impact of the characteristics of the judge, "Age" showed statistically significant correlations with several dimensions of applicant's online contents ( Behaviours and Textual and Visual information) and characteristics (Race, Nationality and Marital Status), while recruiter's "Level of education" showed a correlation with applicants' online content dimensions (Connections, Textual and Visual information, Professional information and SNS presence), and applicant’s characteristics (religion) and lastly, a correlation between recruiter's "Company size", and applicants' online content dimensions (Connections, Personal information, Textual and visual information and SNS presence) and characteristics (Gender). In sum, Recruiter's perceptions of Candidates during the screening process can be influenced by their online content, their characteristics and by the specific characteristics of the recruiters. This research is significant to understand the perceptions and discrimination existing in companies who make hiring decisions based only on perceptions regarding applicants and to aware reader of the importance of managing their digital footprint online image.

Abstract:
In the current context, Human Resource Management praises the human factor, the individual and their experiences, as well as the alignment between organizational objectives with the interests and needs of both individuals and society.
