Abstract:
The present study aims to shed light on analyzing the types and the frequency of the written sentence errors committed by 58 tenth grade Turkish Cypriot English as a foreign language (EFL) students in two classrooms, that is, Class A and B at a public vocational high school in North Cyprus. A quasi-experimental design was employed in the study where Class A was the experimental group which was exposed to an audio-visual aid titled “the Little Red Riding Hood” and Class B who acted as the control group. Data were collected from the written sentences produced by the students. All the errors committed by the students were identified and categorized into syntactic, morphological, orthographic, and lexical categories. The results of the study showed that both classes of students committed 11 types of common errors: (a) wrong use of articles, (b) wrong use of prepositions, (c) word order, (d) verb tense, (e) omission of plural –s, (f) misuse of the possessive –s, (g) incorrect use of comparative adjectives, (h) incorrect spelling, (i) punctuation, (j) capitalization, and (k) wrong words. However, the experimental group committed less errors ( N = 232, 57.14%) as compared to the control group ( N = 320, 78.82%). The findings have implications for EFL teachers to incorporate audio-visual aids into their teaching methodologies when teaching the writing skill.

Abstract:
AbstractThe excavations conducted at Euesperides between 1999 and 2007 under the auspices of the Society for Libyan Studies, London, and the Department of Antiquities, Libya, and jointly directed by Paul Bennet and Andrew Wilson, brought to light private houses and a building complex, industrial areas related to purple dye production and part of the city's fortification wall. Among the finds was a highly significant body of local, regional and imported pottery (from the Greek and Punic world, Cyprus, Italy and elsewhere), dated between the last quarter of the seventh and the middle of the third century BC, when the city was abandoned. This archaeological project adopted an innovative approach to the study of pottery from the site, based on the total quantification of the coarse, fine wares and transport amphorae. This was supplemented by a targeted programme of petrographic analysis to shed light on production centres and thus questions about the trade and the economy of ancient Euesperides. The pottery study by K. Göransson, K. Swift and E. Zimi demonstrated that although the city gradually developed a significant industry of ceramics, it relied heavily on imports to cover its needs and that imported pottery reached Euesperides’ sheltered harbour either directly from the supplying regions or most often through complex maritime networks in the Mediterranean which changed over time.Cooking pots from Aegina and the Punic world, mortaria, bowls, jugs and table amphorae from Corinth as well as transport amphorae from various centres containing olive oil, wine, processed meat and fish were transported to the city from Greece, Italy/Sicily, Cyprus and elsewhere. The so-called amphorae B formed the majority, while Corinthian, Aegean (Thasian, Mendean, Knidian, etc.), Greco-Italic and Punic were adequatly represented. Regarding fine wares, East Greek, Laconian and Corinthian are common until the end of the sixth century; Attic black-glazed, and to a lesser extend, black-figure and red-figure pots dominate the assemblages between the fifth and the mid-third centuries BC, while Corinthian, Italian/Sicilian and Punic seem to have been following the commodities flow at Euesperides from the fourth century BC onwards. Finally, Cyrenaican pottery and transport amphorae have been also identified at Euesperides implying a considerable volume of inter-regional trade.

Abstract:
This article draws attention to the shortcomings of modern lighting systems used in greenhouses. Its content focuses on the negative effects of mismatches between the photosynthetic needs of plants and the parameters of artificial light sources. Greenhouse lamps designers often do not have the knowledge of biological cultivation dependencies. Therefore, their cooperation with specialists of plant physiology and gardeners is indispensable. This is important because it can affect the consumer quality of vegetables. Abstract:
The paper provides information about the growth and development of somatic structures of two-year-old carp during the fattening period. In variant I, K-III compound feed was used (low-carb-monodiet), in variant II – Carp-38/12 (high-carb-monodiet), in variant III – KIII and Carp-38/12 (in different auto-feeders). The highest proportion of axial somatic structures was observed in fish of variant III (fish feeding on a selective basis) (P < 0.05). White muscles are also better developed in fish that eat complex feed (variant III). Compound feed Carp 38/12 does not increase the mass of white muscles (P < 0.05). The proportion of red muscles in fish that eat mixed feed with a low fat content (3.5%) is 45.5% lower than in variants II and III. The use of feed with different energy values and their combination in one pond affects the growth and development of the structure that determines the growth of fish species – the axial skeletal muscles. At the same time, the two-year-old fish species that received the most energy-intensive diet were the most well-fed. Two-year-old carp that received feed with different energy content and complex composition grow differently. This is primarily due to the growth of muscles, which is evidenced by allometric coefficients. The highest values of this parameter featuring positive allometry, were observed in two-year-old carp that received two compound feeds from different feeders (white muscles b = 1.106; red muscles b = 1.499; all muscles b = 1.125). The bionic method of feeding fish in combination with feeds of different energy values provides for strengthened growth of one of the most important body structures – the somatic muscle system. It is not only a biological component of the body that ensures the welfare of animals, but also a high-quality food source.

Abstract:
The aim of the work – to study the acute toxicity of dry extracts obtained from herb and tubers of the earth almond. Materials and methods. The objects of research were dry extracts obtained from herb and tubers of the Cyperus esculentus L. (chufa). Acute toxicity of dry extracts, obtained from the earth almond herb and tubers, was studied with V. B. Prozorovskyi’s method on 42 white nonlinear mice of both sexes weighing 21–25 g, divided into groups (each comprising 3 males and 3 females). The studied extracts were administered once intraperitoneally in doses of 1000 mg/kg, 3000 mg/kg and 5000 mg/kg. The animals were observed for 14 days. Results. Single intraperitoneal administration of dry extracts obtained from herb and tubers of the earth almond at doses of 1000 mg/kg, 3000 mg/kg and 5000 mg/kg did not affect the dynamics of mice’s body weight in comparison with the control group. Experimental and control animals gained weight in accordance with physiological norms. External examination of the animals showed no signs of pathological changes in their condition: the hair and skin were clean, the subcutaneous layer of adipose tissue was moderate, signs of skin damage and inflammatory lesions were not observed on the mucous membranes. Besides, visual estimation of the internal organs condition showed no signs of pathological changes. Conclusions. According to the results of acute toxicity determination based on the classification by K. K. Sydorov, dry extracts obtained from herb and tubers of the earth almond, can be attributed to class VI toxicity – almost harmless substances, LD50 >5000 mg/kg.

Abstract:
In the last ten years, the number of golf courses has been increasing in some countries as the game gains popularity. This indicates, a need to estimate the nutrient loading from golf courses in order to prevent the eutrophication of water bodies. Nutrient concentrations and flow rates of a brook were measured once a week from 1989 to 1990 at two sites: Site A of a brook flowing out from D-golf course (53 ha) and Site B of the same brook discharging into the golf course from an upper forested basin (23 ha) covered mainly with planted Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa SIEB. et ZUCC). The bedrock of the area was granite. The annual values of precipitation and mean temperature were 1947 mm and 13.5°C in 1989, respectively. The arithmetic average values of discharge from the forested basin and the golf course were 0.392 and 1.26 mg/l total nitrogen (TN), 0.0072 and 0.145 mg/l total phosphorus (TP), 0.82 and 3.53 mg/l potassium ion (K+, 5.92 and 8.24 mg/l sodium ion (Na+), 2.1 and 9.9 mg/l suspending solid (0.001–2.0 mm, SS), 0.087 and 0.147 mS/cm electric conductivity (EC), and 0.031 and 0.037 m3/km2•s specific discharge, respectively. The loading rates of the forested basin and the golf course were 5.42 and 13.5 TN, 0.133 and 3.04 TP, 8.84 and 33.9 K+, 55.0 and 73.0 Na+, and 54.3 and 118 SS in kg/ha•y. The leaching and runoff rate of nitrogen in the chemical fertilizers applied on the golf course was calculated as 32%. These results indicated the importance of controlling the phosphorus loading for the management of golf courses.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Rare B± decays to three charged kaons are analysed. The weak decay amplitudes are derived in the QCD factorization approach. The strong final state interactions between pairs of kaons are described using the kaon scalar and vector form factors. The scalar form factors at low K+K- effective mass distributions are constrained by chiral symmetry and are related to the coupled channel meson-meson amplitudes describing all the transitions between three channels consisting of two kaons, two pions and four pions. The vector form factors are fitted to the data on e+e- collisions. The model results are compared with the Belle and BaBar data.

Mitsigkas, Neophytos. "Using novels in English language teaching in Cyprus." Thesis, University of Essex, 2016. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/19316/.

Abstract:
This thesis reports on a mixed-methods descriptive study concerning the students and teachers’ perceptions of the role of literature – and novels in particular – in English language teaching and learning. Literature has always been a perpetual feature of language learning, and the transition from the aesthetic study of literature to its use as a resource for linguistic development in the language classroom has marked its implementation and use. For many decades, the use of literature for language teaching was marginalised because of the advent of communicative language teaching. Nevertheless, the current trend favours a resurgence of interest in using literature for language purposes, appreciating its valuable contribution in English language teaching. However, very limited empirical research has been done to examine the use of novels in language teaching. The quantitative component of this research involved 144 students of an English-speaking private school in Cyprus and 26 English language teachers. Both groups responded to a distinct self-completed questionnaire. A follow-up qualitative investigation was carried out with five of the teachers who completed the questionnaire. Lastly, twelve unstructured, non-participant observations were organised with the students who completed the questionnaire, in their classrooms. For a statistical analysis, IBM SPSS Statistics 19 was used, while the qualitative data analysis was done with NVivo 10 and the results from the quantitative and qualitative enquiry were then integrated in order to respond to six research questions. The findings of the study present the students and teachers’ beliefs on the role of novels in ELT and elucidate the acceptance of novels as an invaluable source of motivating and stimulating activities that can contribute to the increase of students’ language awareness. Additionally, the findings resulting from an examination of the students and teachers’ beliefs substantiate and promote the catalytic role of novels in developing an intercultural awareness, where language and culture are seen as interrelated entities and novels are perceived as vivid cultural representations.

Abstract:
Much affected by viewing the Yugoslav Wars' ruins, I resolved to study archaeology in conflict. I wanted to explore archaeology's role in conflict and archaeologists' responsibilities in conflict zones; but unable to conduct such work in Kosova/Kosovo, I went to Cyprus. Drawing together professional documentation and public education, professional and community interactions and interviews, and cultural heritage site visits, I researched the destruction of community places, the looting of cultural heritage, and the coping strategies of archaeologists. The key questions of this thesis are: is it legal and ethical to conduct archaeological work in occupied and secessionist territories? How is public knowledge of cultural heritage looting and destruction constructed? What are cultural heritage professionals' responsibilities for knowledge production during conflict? How ought cultural heritage professionals to combat the looting and illicit trading of antiquities? I have addressed these questions by concentrating upon cultural heritage workers' narratives of looting and destruction from 1955 until the present in professional discussion and mass education. First, I argue that archaeologists have misinterpreted international law, and through boycotting and blacklisting of rescue archaeology in northern Cyprus, harmed both the profession and the cultural heritage. Second, I argue that cultural heritage workers have been unwillingly coopted, or actively complicit in the conflict, in the production of nationalist histories, and thus nationalist communities, therefore in the reproduction of nationalist conflict. Third, I argue that cultural heritage workers have knowingly contributed to the conflict and its destruction, through their nationalist policies on the paramilitary-dominated illicit antiquities trade. My conclusions are: that an ethical antiquities policy would cut funding to and thereby reduce conflict-fuelling extremist activity; and that, where they have the freedom to practice it, professional and ethical archaeologies of destruction would promote intracommunal and intercommunal peace.

The LHCb experiment has been designed to study flavor physics, notably CP violation, on the LHC proton-proton collider. The first LHC run goes from 2011 to 2012, during what LHCb saved 3.19~fb⁻¹ of data with a collision centre-of-mass energy at √s = 7~TeV and √s = 8~TeV.The analysis presented in this thesis is based on a data sample corresponding to the full first run of the LHC (2011-2012). The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mechanism describes CP violation in the Standard Model. In the previous decade, two dedicated experiments to flavor physics, BaBar and Belle, proved that the CKM mechanism is at work and dominated by Standard effects. Now LHCb aim is to improve precision on measurements of CKM parameters, in order to serves as the Standard Model reference points, to make in parallel indirect search of New Physics looking for deviations from the Standard Model reference points.Accurate measurements of CKM parameters through different processes provide sensitivity to new physics effects, by testing the global consistency of the Standard Model. This thesis is included inside the first LHCb aim: to improve CKM parameters measurements to constrain the Standard Model. This thesis reports the most precise measurement to date of the branching fraction of B⁰(s)→D̅⁰K⁺K⁻ decay, the first observation of the decays B⁰(s)→D̅⁰K⁺K⁻ and B⁰(s)→D̅⁽*⁾⁰φ with a polarization measurement for the second one, confirmation of the branching fraction measurement of B⁰(s)→D̅⁽*⁾⁰φ, and upper limits on branching fraction of B⁰(s)→D̅⁽*⁾⁰φ decay and on {ω - φ} mixing angle. The observation of B⁰(s)→D̅⁰K⁺K⁻ and B⁰(s)→D̅⁽*⁾⁰φ decays prepare the Dalitz analysis for these channels which will be used, combined with other methodes, to improve measurement on the γ complex-phase of the CKM mechanism
