Abstract:
Explanation of the connection between gaslight and spirit may be taken as the tenor of the explanation given by the cook Elizabeth when Paula, drained, manages to scream down the stairwell for Elizabeth to come up. Entering Paula's room and, in response to Paula’s question, assuring her that there’s no one in the house to cause any dimming, Elizabeth adds: “But the gas comes in pipes; and I expect there gets more gas in the pipes at some times than there does at others.” Paula sees the possibility: “Yes. Yes. I suppose that could explain it.” It does not explain the ensuing noises, however, and it does not really in itself match what calls for an explanation: it does not connect the specific conduits between the seen and the unseen. (And can film do what Kant could not do?"

Abstract:
Abstract In 1753, a pregnant woman named Paula was kidnapped in Angola, enslaved, and taken to Brazil. Four decades later, in 1794, Paula's children and grandchildren, 15 in total, filed a lawsuit for their family's freedom in Rio de Janeiro claiming that Paula was a free woman in Angola before her enslavement. This article reconstructs Paula and her descendants' multigenerational legal battle and reveals that their struggle for freedom was, in large part, a struggle against archives. I examine a unique aspect of the freedom suit: witness testimony from Paula's former kin and community in Angola, collected across the Atlantic Ocean four decades after Paula's enslavement. I argue that the memory and testimony of Paula's kin and community in Angola formed a powerful counterarchive that not only narrated her freedom in Angola but also challenged the Brazilian colonial archive's reliance on paper evidence of freedom.

Abstract:
In 1893, Mrs. Patrick (Stella) Campbell appeared as the title character in Arthur Wing Pinero's The Second Mrs Tanqueray at the St James's Theatre in London. The play told of a respectable widower, Aubrey Tanqueray, and his doomed second marriage to Paula, a younger woman with a past. Good wives did not have “pasts,” and Paula's is particularly scandalous for she has, since adolescence, “kept house” with a series of men. Aware that their marriage is unlikely to be accepted by their peers, Paula and Aubrey retreat to the country, where they are joined by Aubrey's adult daughter, Ellean. Ellean subsequently becomes engaged to a young soldier, Hugh Ardale. The crisis of the play occurs when Paula and Ardale come face to face and the audience learns that the pair had once lived together in London. With this revelation, Paula becomes convinced that she cannot outrun her past, and the play closes with her suicide. Despite the conventionality of its ending, the play was considered modern and daring and is remembered as one of the first attempts to represent the “fallen woman” sympathetically and to question the sexual double standard that operated in Victorian society. Campbell's clarity of expression and relatively unmannered delivery enhanced Pinero's uncommonly sympathetic portrait of a former courtesan. However, it was the actress's physical presence that particularly captured the audience's imagination. Campbell was tall, pale, and thin to the point of angularity—a representative example of the fashionable “neurasthenic” woman of the 1890s. Pinero's characterization joined with Campbell's playing style and (most important) her physicality to create the entity I dub “Paula Tanqueray circa 1893.” This entity haunted Campbell's entire career, acting as a ghostly double to her living body both onstage and off. Campbell continued to play the role of Paula Tanqueray into the 1920s, yet as the actress's body matured and changed, that of the ghost retained its svelte 1893 proportions and youthful charm, creating a corporeal dissonance that disrupted audience reception.

Abstract:
Abstract Focusing on immigration in the 1920s, we trace the history of efforts made on behalf of intellectually disabled children who entered the United States on bond during World War I and were subsequently given orders of deportation. Thanks to the activism of community members and ethnic organizations who brought federal lawsuits on their behalf and reached out to Congress and to Presidents Harding and Coolidge, the Immigration Act of 1924 permitted the secretary of labor to allow these young people to remain in the United States. We suggest the need to reconsider the chronology of activism on behalf of the disabled and argue that community skepticism about deportation deserves greater exploration. Finally, we note the challenges to medical authority posed by supporters of the intellectually disabled. Our analysis focuses on the example of Paula Patton, an intellectually disabled girl, and on Clara Kinley, the community activist who supported Paula’s effort to avoid deportation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Briefly mentioned in textbooks of literary history, the pioneering publisher Francisco de Paula Brito (1809-1861) is the main character of this thesis. The focus on his figure is a way to observe literature and history from a perspective that considers its material conditions of production and circulation. We start from the premise that belated installation of a communication system based on the press just on the beginning of nineteenth century had consequences for the definitions of the contours of the literary in Brazil. It was this delay which simultaneously condensed three different aspects of edition – capital, intellectual autonomy and voice – in the figure of Paula Brito. Aiming to describe each of these aspects we consulted historical texts, journals and articles published at the time. The research did not seek to isolate each of these aspects, but to show that contingencial interweaving between them promoted the presence of writing and literature in everyday Brazilian court. Although we use the figurations of the editor to structure the thesis, it is important to say that Paula Brito passed through freely by all functions of the literate world, and it was precisely its multiple and ambiguous character which allowed us to draw relationships between seemingly distant concepts and activities as typographer and author, intellectual and manual, body and meaning. Is exemplary in this sense the existence of Petalogica, literaryhumorous society where we could observe paradoxical relationships that draw a productive conflict in the search for boundaries between literary and non-literary.

Carcasó, Díaz Jordi. "Francesc de Paula Mirabent i l’estètica francesa." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/110927.

Full text
Abstract:
Catalan aesthetics is a relatively young philosophical discipline and one that is barely explored if one considers the abundant artistic production that has been emerging in Catalonia for some time. Francesc de Paula Mirabent i Vilaplana is a remarkable exception in Catalan philosophy, as he managed to reposition Catalan aesthetics within the European debate, even if only on an occasional basis and following the path of French aesthetes. Mirabent is known as one of the disciples of Dr. Serra Hunter, from the University of Barcelona School of Philosophy, and thus for the continuity of a tradition with Scottish roots introduced by Martí d’Eixalà and developed by Llorens i Barba. His initial philosophical studies (“La estética inglesa del s.XVIII”, published in 1927 ) indeed point in this intellectual direction, which some philosophers referred to as the Catalan School of Philosophy or Barcelona School . Dr. Mirabent’s most significant book, “De la Bellesa” , which was published in 1936, nonetheless has a very different bibliography. His immediate references are specifically no longer English or Scottish philosophers, but rather the French aesthetes, among whom two names to be considered later stand out particularly: Victor Basch and Charles Lalo. This study therefore has a two-fold objective: A) From a historical perspective, to reveal hitherto unexplored aspects of Dr. Mirabent’s character, which will assist in interpretation of his philosophical thought: B) To determine the extent to which Mirabent may be considered an author in the French tradition, given the strong influence French aesthetics had on him. Secondarily, and as a consequence of the above objectives, the intention is to show how French philosophy has played an indicative role in the Barcelona School, perhaps silently or not so elaborately as that of British philosophy, yet nonetheless fruitful and stimulating. Over and above the parallels, similarities and conceptual discrepancies with the French philosophers considered, reference shall also be made to a certain methodological, bibliographical and personal affinity with some of them. Hence, Mirabent can be described as having achieved a place among France’s most significant aesthetes of the early twentieth-century.
