Lewin, Leif, and Johannes Lindvall. One Hundred Years of Swedish Economic Policy. Edited by Jon Pierre. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199665679.013.36.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the development of Swedish economic policy from the early 1920s to the present. The chapter has three objectives: to describe how Swedish economic policy-making has evolved over time, concentrating on a few especially important periods: the adoption of expansionary fiscal policies in the 1930s, the development of Sweden’s postwar economic model in the 1950s, the struggle to maintain full employment in the 1970s and 1980s, the financial crisis of the early 1990s, and Sweden’s response to worldwide recession in the 2000s. The second objective is to show if and when Swedish governments have pursued economic policies that set Sweden apart from other rich democracies; and the third is to examine a number of scholarly debates concerning how to explain some of the economic policy shifts that have occurred in Sweden since its transition to democracy in the 1910s.

Woodworth, Griffin. Synthesizers As Social Protest in Early-1970s Funk. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199985227.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
The advent of the synthesizer brought a new timbral palette for artists to explore. Early synthesizers sought to imitate acoustic instruments, but over time they developed their own unique timbral qualities used in 1970s funk and progressive rock. Occupying the Freudian uncanny, synthesized sounds are just distinguishable enough from those of acoustic instruments to inspire discomfort or create an otherworldly, science-fiction sound. This chapter argues that African-American funk musicians of the 1970s used synthesizers in the spirit of black social empowerment movements, which advocated for the reclamation of technology to be used in the defense of black communities. Artists such as Stevie Wonder and Parliament-Funkadelic’s Bernie Worrell utilized the synthesizer to articulate social protest against the plight of inner-city black Americans. To explore these issues, the chapter analyzes “Chocolate City” and “Living for the City” from lyrical, structural, and timbral perspectives.

Seidman, Steven, Chet Meeks, and James Joseph Dean. The Politics of Authenticity: Civic Individualism and the Cultural Roots of Gay Normalization. Edited by Jeffrey C. Alexander, Ronald N. Jacobs, and Philip Smith. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195377767.013.19.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines the politics of authenticity by focusing on civic individualism and the cultural roots of gay normalization. It introduces the notion of a “cultural code” to understand something of the cultural grounds of postwar gay and lesbian politics and argues that “civic individualism” has been a dominant cultural code in contemporary America. The article begins with a discussion of the founding moment in the gay and lesbian movement: the appearance of the first national political organizations in the 1950s. It then considers the emergence of gay liberationism in the late 1960s and early 1970s that challenged the American culture of civic individualism. It also looks at the rise of a politics of mainstreaming for lesbians and gays during the 1970s and 1980s as well as the triumph of the politics of virtue for the movement during the 1990s.

Rasmussen, Seth C. The Origins and Early History of Conjugated Organic Polymers. Oxford University PressNew York, NY, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1093/9780197638194.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Conjugated organic polymers are intrinsic semiconducting materials that exhibit enhanced conductivity upon oxidation or reduction. The unusual nature of this class of organic polymers was brought into particular focus in the late 1970s with the first example of conductivity values in the metallic regime, for which the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Hideki Shirakawa, Alan MacDiarmid, and Alan Heeger. As such, it is generally believed that these materials are a relatively recent advancement and originated with this polyacetylene work in the 1970s. This accepted narrative, however, ignores the fact that reports of electrically conductive polymers date back to the early 1960s, with the study of conjugated polymers as a whole dating back to the early 19th century. In fact, the oldest member of this family, polyaniline, predates even polystyrene and is the oldest known fully synthetic organic polymer. Unfortunately, the historical narrative of these polymers is quite muddled in the primary literature, with various inaccuracies and falsehoods commonly propagated. To present a more accurate account as a resource for the field, this book aims to present a comprehensive history of the origin and development of conjugated organic polymers, covering the period from 1834 to the late 1980s. In the process, the history of the first six primary parent polymers (polyaniline, polypyrrole, polyphenylene, poly(phenylene vinylene), polyacetylene, and polythiophene) is presented, as well as the birth of low-bandgap polymers in the mid-1980s.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter assesses economic structure and India’s detailed growth patterns. Economic growth is a three-stage process, with the agriculture sector, manufacturing sector, and the services sector following on in development. India has leapfrogged over sequences. India’s transition from agriculture to services, with industry’s share cursory, is a conundrum. In the first part of the 1950s, India grew well, based on the creation of a national industrial development system. In the 1960s and 1970s institutional mechanisms changed the environment negatively and led to growth decline. From the late 1970s, a pragmatic Bombay can-do spirit led to key policy initiatives and high growth in the 1980s. The early 1990s’ crisis motivated institutional disruption. A philosophy of discontinuity, driving crucial competition policy reforms, led to high growth till the late 2010s, when predatory and collusive behavior delegitimized institutional processes, leading to growth slowdown and the emergence of deindustrialization.

Abstract:
In 1994 the Academy of International Business elected Edith Penrose an Emeritus Distinguished Fellow of the Academy—an honour only bestowed once before, on Charles Kindleberger. Her distinctive contribution was singled out in two areas; the theory of the growth of the firm and the understanding of the interface between the strategies and activities of international and multinational enterprises and the nation states—particularly the developing countries—in which they operated. The first topic engaged her in the 1950s and early 1960s, the latter in the later 1960s and 1970s. These topics led on to a third; the implications for firms and national governments of the emergence of a more liberalized and closely integrated global economy, which she addressed as a professor emeritus in the 1980s and early 1990s. Her major contribution to the field of economics was ...

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the political economy created by politicians and business leaders in the 1970s and its links to the Great Recession. It argues that the economies of the 1970s and the contemporary world are global. Both contained imbalances among the major trading nations that led to recession. In the 1970s, the most important change that affected workers in the public and private sectors was that the long period of postwar economic growth ended between 1973 and 1975. In the United States, as classic Keynesianism employing macroeconomic techniques and free trade faltered, the labor movement proposed microeconomic industrial policy to address the crisis. A reformed Democratic party, less responsive to labor, was uninterested. Unable to govern effectively, in 1980 Democrats yielded power to a Republican party that promised to restore prosperity. President Ronald Reagan's policies did bring back growth, but they also altered the postwar mixed economy, privileging capital and sacrificing manufacturing for the chimera of high technology, finance, and real estate. This sectoral shift profoundly changed the size and composition of the labor movement. The distortions produced by this recomposition of the economy also led in time to the Great Recession.
