Abstract:
The church has suffered much security challenges from people of opposing religious faith, who felt threatened by the unique presence of God, convincing miracles, dominating spirituality, unparalleled missionary spirit, as well as her particularistic doctrinal claims. The experience of Christians in the first few centuries of the Christian church was characterized by great persecutions. Also, Christian persecution in contemporary time is a serious challenge. Many faithful Christians who were unwilling to compromise their faith were martyred in the process in a most horrible manner. The current state of Nigeria is inherently reflected in the mirror of the early church. The contemporary Christians in Nigeria benefit a great deal from the early Church’s experience and response to persecution. Employing a descriptive methodology, persecution is analyzed in the context of the early Church mirroring the Nigerian Church.

Graham, Laurence A. M. "An historical analysis of early church mission methods." Thesis, Queen's University Belfast, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.695344.

Abstract:
The main focus of this thesis is an historical analysis of the methods of mission used by the Church during approximately the first six centuries of the Common Era. The New Testament describes the effectiveness of sermons preached to large crowds of people as well as providing evidence of evangelists and Church planters who travelled around the Roman Empire calling people to conversion and gathering converts into congregations. However, the extant evidence suggests that such high profile evangelism all but died out during the second and third centuries. It appears that the main means by which the Church grew during these centuries was the attractiveness of the Church community and the lifestyle of ordinary Christians. In the fourth, fifth and sixth centuries the Church moved from being a small, marginalised and sometimes persecuted group of people to becoming one of the central institutions of Roman society. In this context the Church began to grow simply because it became aligned with the mainstream of society, as well as by coercion. During these same centuries there were also Christians who lived outside the Roman Empire where they were a minority who shared their message by showing their neighbours a positive alternative way of living. In a concluding section the variation in methods of mission across the first six centuries CE are summarised before a short discussion raising some possible implications for mission today. It is suggested that the contemporary Church in the Western world has lessons to learn from the Church of the first three centuries regarding the importance of ordinary Christians demonstrating a distinctive Christian lifestyle to their neighbours.

Publishing House of the Eparchy of Šumadija of the Serbian Orthodox Church - "Kalenić", 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.46793/6008-065-5.397rs.

Abstract:
This article discusses a significant element of the religious sound- scape of the Orthodox communities in the Balkans, the call to mass. The period between the Byzantine reconquest of Constantinople (1261) and the death of the Serbian King Milutin (1282–1321) witnessed the expansion of bell ringing in churches and monasteries while the semantron, the tradition- al instrument of the Byzantine Church, continued to be employed. Hence, the first decades of the Palaeologan age were crucial for the formation of a new religious soundscape that included the sounds of both church bells and semantra, that is, it was eclectic. A combination of written sources and instances of material culture attest the development of this heterogeneous soundscape. The former include references from Byzantine and Serbian sources while the latter comprises two bells cast in the thirteenth and the fourteenth century. These artefacts help us to visualise the type of church bells employed in the Balkans during the reign of King Milutin. The aim of the contribution is to provide a picture -as general as possible- of the reli- gious soundscape of the Early Palaeologan age and highlight the significant transformation that it underwent in these years.

Abstract:
The design of the iconographic program was not a typically repeated process for the decoration of a church, but it was a challenge for Byzantine painters, mason masters, and donors. Although the thematic content of the basic cycles was predetermined, alternative arrangements in the architectural space attempted to highlight specific theological con- cepts. Thus, the pictorial narrative, without losing its historical character, acquired an additional doctrinal dimension. In this article we select examples of original solutions in frescoed churches of the 14th century that reflect the spiritual environment and theological concerns of the late Byzantine era.

Abstract:
Carol Cortobius was an architect trained in Germany, with an initial practice at Otto Wagner in Vienna, who worked for the Hungarian community in Bucharest building churches. An introduction on the catholic Hungarian community in Bucharest will be given. Dănuț Doboș in a monograph of one catholic church in Bucharest offers an overview of all his works. For the three catholic churches on which he intervened (two built, one restored, but altered now) there are monographs showing archive images not available for the general public. Apart of the catholic churches (two of the Hungarian community) he also built the baptist seminar. Particularly the first built church, Saint Elena, is interesting as an early example of Art Deco and will be analysed in the context of the Secession in Vienna and Budapest, which will be introduced. With help of historic maps the places of the works were identified. Many of them do not exist today anymore because of demolitions either to build new streets or those of the Ceaușescu period (ex. the opereta theatre, a former pharmacy). Images of these were looked for in groups dedicated to he disappeared Uranus neighbourhood The paper will show where these were located. Some of the common buildings have an interesting history, such as the first chocolate factory. Another interesting early Art deco building is the pelican house. There are common details between this and the restored church. The research will be continued with archive research in public archives when the sanitary situation will permit.

Abstract:
More than 140 churches with medieval wall paintings have been preserved in Istria, which are an essential part of Istrian cultural identity, and classify Istria as the region with the greatest density of this type of cultural heritage. In the last 25 years considerable effort has been put into the preservation and conservation of the wall paintings, but also in the restoration of the churches from the structural point of view. The most significant adverse effects on the frescoes are capillary humidity and cracks that occur as a result of the ground settlement. In this paper we will focus on small single-nave churches with pointed barrel vaults, which are characteristic for the Gothic period. As a case study, the seismic capacity of the church of St. Anthony in Barban will be studied. The interior of the church was entirely painted in the early 15th century. The church has a simple architecture: a rectangular ground plan, roof covered with slate tiles and a bell gable present at the front façade. The walls are built of regular stone blocks in lime mortar. We present results of the numerical analysis of the pointed vault due to seismic actions. The admissible failure mechanisms related to formation of plastic hinges are examined.

Abstract:
Taking into account the fact that the acolouthy of the Footwashing on Maundy Thursday had been formed in Jerusalem, probably during 5th Century, the existence of this rite in Typicon of Nicodemus, Archbishop of Serbia (1316- 1324), is an inspiring subject for liturgiological research. Although this acolouthy is well-known in Greek as Ὁ νιπτὴρ or τὸ νίμμα, we have approached to this topic by theological and teleturgical studying of its origin. The roots of this rite lie in the early centuries of Christianity, with various additions, deletions and variations of the specific acolouthy in use even nowadays in some of the centers of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The acolouthy of the Footwashing on Maundy Thursday has been shaped in 10th Century in two different modalities, one for the urban churches, and another one for the monastic churches at the Orthodox East. The rite from Typicon of Nicodemus (1319) belongs to the group of monastic acolouthies with direct impact of liturgical praxis of the Holy City of Jerusalem and Constantinopolitan monasteries. It implies that should be performed immediately after the Ambo prayer on Maundy Thursday’s Holy Liturgy in the pronaos of the monastic church. Such an acolouthy had retained some aspects of the earlier prayer for the sanctification of the water for the footwashing and also rubric for the anointing of all assembled in the church. The acolouthy of the Footwashing on Maundy Thursday in Typicon of Nicodemus is very important testimony about vivid and strong liturgical life of the Eastern Orthodox Serbs and Archbishopric of the Serbian and Maritime Lands in the 14th Century.

Zabaikalye is one of the few places in Russia where the memory of Decembrists is given special importance. An example of fondness for a good name of «the first Russian revolutionaries» is the museum located in Mikhailo-Arkhangelsk church in the old part of Chita. The history simply combined a wooden church built at the end of the 18th century and a socio-political event of the early 19th century. The church became the center of the Decembrist stay in Chita, and therefore, it was not by chance the decision to locate the museum there. Today, the legacy of the Decembrists on the Trans-Baikal land is going through difficult times. The article is devoted to the history of this issue.

THE OLD BULGARIAN SETTLEMENT NEAR THE VILLAGE OF GIGEN – A LOCAL CULTURAL CENTER (Summary) The article examines the early medieval settlement located in the Roman and early Byzantine town of Ulpia Oesus next to the present-day village of Gigen. Archaeogical excavations show that it is the largest in the area, there was a church and probably a small monastery. The settlement is known for the anti-heretical inscription discovered in the church. In the 11th century, it was destroyed by the Pechenegs, who made a large camp here. This camp is mentioned in Byzantine sources, as here in 1059 the Pechenegs were defeated. An Оld Bulgarian text mentions a battle on Gigovo Pole, in which the Pechenegs were defeated, and this allows this toponym to be associated with the settlement in question.

Abstract:
The rapid mechanisms of sensitivity regulation following light offset are distinct from the more commonly studied slower form of dark adaptation and are called early dark adaptation (EDA) (Baker, 1953, 1963; Rinalducci, 1967; Geisler, 1983). It is well established that EDA is determined by peripheral retinal mechanisms (Baker, 1973; Baker and Donovan, 1982; Geisler, 1983; Hayhoe, Benimoff, and Hood, 1987). Previous experiments from our laboratory have demonstrated significant alterations in early light adaptation as a function of age (Sturr, Kelly, Kobus and Taub, 1982; Sturr, Church, and Taub, 1985). However, EDA has not yet been investigated in the aging visual system. These early mechanisms of sensitivity regulation may be especially sensitive to age-related changes in vision which would not be revealed by more traditional measures of visual function such as visual acuity. Therefore, the current study evaluated EDA for both young and old observers.
