Abstract:
Early detection and rapid response (EDRR) are essential to identifying and decisively responding to the introduction or spread of an invasive species, thus avoiding population establishment and improving the probability of achieving eradication. However, detection can be challenging at the onset of a species invasion as low population densities can reduce the likelihood of detection and conceal the true extent of the situation until the species is well established. This is doubly challenging if the invading species displays cryptic behavior or is nocturnal, thus further limiting opportunities

Abstract We present the radio afterglow of short gamma-ray burst (GRB) 230217A, which was detected less than 1 day after the gamma-ray prompt emission with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. The ATCA rapid-response system automatically triggered an observation of GRB 230217A following its detection by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and began observing the event just 32 minutes postburst at 5.5 and 9 GHz for 7 hr. Dividing the 7 hr observation into three time-binned images allowed us to obtain radio detections with logarithmic central times

The article presents a clinical case of such difficult for detection disease assystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), which is characterized by atypical debut options, rapid development of complications, inadequate response to therapy. It is emphasized that the first clinical manifestations of the disease are the most important for its timely diagnosis, beginning of treatment and prevention of complications. The study concludes that mistakes in the diagnosis, late beginning of treatment may be related to the absence of SLE awareness among physicians.

Abstract Pathogens are one of the leading causes of death globally. Early detection of pathogens seems to be necessary. Detection of bacteria and harmful viruses like severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a fast manner is very critical for early diagnosis of infections to prevent spreading. Current tools for the detection of pathogens are challenging in terms of specificity, rapidity, and simplicity. For this purpose, biosensors have shown advances in rapid diagnosis, high sensitivity, and selectivity detection of pathogens. Nanoparticles-based biosensors are very use

Chemical treatment is the primary means to control microbial contamination, but due to changes in temperature and water sources, this results in major shifts in the microbial levels and populations which can influence the efficacy of these treatments. Due to the shifts in the number of bacteria and the change in the dominant microbial species, optimal dosage of biocide is very difficult. Inadequate dosage regimen will

Abstract:
The development of biosensors has been astronomical with the advent of the rapid growth of nanomaterials and nanotechnology. Nanobiosensors are becoming ubiquitous in numerous biomedical applications. Thus, there is a great impetus to exploit smart nanoparticles and other nanomaterials for designing and fabricating smart nanobiosensors that are ultrasensitive and biocompatible. We are developing smart self-assembling biosensors that can detect specific biomolecules (e.g., enzymes, cofactors, metabolites, drugs, hormones, etc.) from micro- to nanomolar levels. Abstract:
Recent advancements of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have generated significant interest within and beyond the traditional aviation industry, and many novel applications have been identified and are in development. One promising application for these innovative systems is in firefighting, with eVTOL aircraft complementing current firefighting capabilities to help save lives and reduce fire-induced damages. With increased global occurrences and scales of wildfires—not to mention the issues firefighters face during urban and rural firefighting operations daily—eVTOL tec

Abstract:
Exotic plant populations can be potentially catastrophic to the natural communities of South Florida. Aggressive exotics such as Brazillian Pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius) and Melaleuca (Melaleuca quinquinervia) have displaced native habitats and formed monocultures of exotic stands (Dalrymple et al. 2003). Nearby plant nurseries, especially the ones outside the boundaries of Biscayne National Park (BISC) and Everglades National Park (EVER), are a continuous source of new exotic species that may become established within South Florida’s national parks. Abstract:
This interdisciplinaray work combines expertise in engineering and entomology in Israel and the US, to develop an acoustic trap for mate-seeking female medflies. Medflies are among the world's most economically harmful pests, and monitoring and control efforts cost about $800 million each year in Israel and the US. Efficient traps are vitally important tools for medfly quarantine and pest management activities; they are needed for early detection, for predicting dispersal patterns and for estimating medfly abundance within infested regions. Early detection facilitates rapid response to invasio

In 1992 a working group of the UK Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food presented a report on Vacuum Packaging and Associated Processes regarding the microbiological safety of chilled foods. The report supported subsequent guidance provided by the UK Food Standards Agency for the safe manufacture of vacuum packed and modified atmosphere packed chilled foods. In 2021 the ACMSF requested that a new subgroup should update and build on the 1992 report as well as considering, in addition to chilled foods, some foods that are intended to be stored at ambient temperatures. Abstract:
In austere environments with limited access to clean water, it is advantageous to use nonpotable water for construction (i.e., mixing water for concrete.) In rapid-response situations such as rapid airfield damage recovery (RADR), the use of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements is beneficial for expedient pavement repairs because of their rapid strength gain characteristics. However, the hydration products formed by CSA cements are substantially different from those formed by ordinary portland cement and might react differently to impurities that water sources may contain.
