During the early Twentieth Century, many gifted British clergy came to South Africa. They must have felt optimistic that many rings of bells would soon be installed in their adopted country. South Africa had survived the Boer Wars, the economy was reasonably healthy, new churches were being built and many others were being planned. The Union of South Africa was only a few years old and the political stability of this great part of the British Empire seemed assured. Abstract:
This research study, The Role of Corporate Social Investment in Supporting Early Childhood Development in South Africa, explored the role of and the degree to which, corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives in South Africa support early childhood development (ECD). Trends of CSI expenditure in ECD over time were examined, as well as the motivations for investment in the ECD sector. A key intention of this study was to establish the benefits of corporate investment in the ECD sector, and to discover how the ECD sector can tap into more CSI funding in the future. Doctor Legum - LLD<br>This study sets out to establish what is required of the South African government to comply with international human rights treaties and Constitutional obligations with respect to early childhood development (ECD) for children with disabilities. This requires clarification of the nature, scope and content of ECD and conceptual frameworks for child development and childhood disability are therefore presented. Early childhood is defined as the period from birth to four years of age. It is a period (by comparison to any other phase in the life course) of accelerated gr

Despite the high prevalence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in South African women of reproductive age, the South African (SA) Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) programme has significantly reduced the incidence of new HIV infections in infants from >20% in 2004 to <2% and overall MTCT approximately >5%. The PMTCT programme, however, faces challenges in terms of early infant diagnosis (EID) because of HIV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) indeterminate results as well as HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) secondary to antiretroviral therapy (ART) exposure of mothers and infan

Although reading is a fundamental competency and the core of our curriculum, a gap exists in practice. This case study considers the relationship between context, school policy and environmental teaching and learning processes at a community-based early childhood development centre in South Africa. The study recognises that educational practices in the early childhood development field are shaped by historical, cultural, economic and political realities at both local and national levels. It is from the understanding that each school is a unique composition of these shaping factors that the research was designed to consider the community-based school participating in this study. It is a growing industry and consists of several production areas. The fastest growing table grape production area in South Africa is the Lower Orange River area, which produces some of the earliest grapes in the Southern Hemisphere. Abstract:
This research study investigates how selected Grade R teachers implement numeracy in their classrooms, based on their experiences, personal beliefs and perceptions. This study adopts the view that a teacher's practice is not only informed on what she believes about her learners, but also on how she organises her classroom environment and her own teaching practice. However, the teacher cannot be divorced from the political and historical background of Early Childhood Development (ECD), as these factors have an impact on her numeracy implementation. This study involves an analysis of accounts of first and subsequent early sexual experiences in a deep rural area of the Eastern Cape in South Africa over the last forty years. Through interviews and focus group discussions, the enculturation of youth into sexual activity in the community of interest is explored. The study looks into sexual experiences from childhood, through early adolescence to adults of up to sixty five years old, allowing an analysis of the changing forms of sexual experimentation and sexual debut in this context. Contextual factors mediating these changes are explored, wi
