Abstract:
Pylyshyn's concentration on form perception to demonstrate that early vision is cognitively impenetrable neglects that color perception is also part of early vision. Thus, the finding of Duncker (1939), Bruner et al. (1951), and Delk and Fillenbaum (1965) that the expected color of objects affects how they are perceived challenges Pylyshyn's thesis.

Abstract:
This essay pursues the study of early modern memory across a chronologically, conceptually and thematically broad canvas in order to address key questions about the historicity of memory and the methodologies of memory studies. First, what is the value for our understanding of early modern memory practices of transporting the methodologies of contemporary memory studies backwards, using them to study the memorial culture of a time before living memory? Second, what happens to the cross-disciplinary project of memory studies when it is taken to a distant period, one that had its own highly self-conscious and much debated cultures of remembering? Drawing on evidence and debates from a range of disciplinary locations, but primarily focusing on literary and historical studies, the essay interrogates crucial differences and commonalities between memory studies and early modern studies.

Abstract:
Abstract:Currently the diagnosis of progressive organic dementia is one of exclusion offered only after cognitive decline is well advanced. Early in the disease process, memory complaints most often bring elderly people to the attention of their family physician .This behaviour represents the first step in the process of giving a patient the medical diagnosis of organic dementia, yet no systematic method has been developed to gather such subjective information and evaluate its medical significance. We are developing a memory complaints questionnaire and a brief non-threatening memory screening instrument to help identify organic dementia in its earliest stages. The screening device will be related to more sophisticated neuropsychological measures of dementia and it should be sensitive to mental deterioration over short periods of time. The instruments will document perceived and objective changes in memory and will help the physician attribute their findings to normal aging, depression and/or degenerative CNS disease.

Abstract:
The article analyses the relation between two metaphors of memory: project and repository. These ancient metaphors in early modern philosophy describe memory as the origin of such a duration which is the foundation of autonomy of contemplating being. That description gives the opportunity to answer the questions: what is the necessity of memory, what is memorabilia (and why memory and mnemonical things are essentially the same), and what it means to remember “by heart”. The concept of duration, which is central for Bergson’s philosophy, has its roots in early modern thinking and is strongly connected with a special kind of memory machine: machine without movement. Keywords: memory, duration, contraposition of memory and history, memory machinesDvi atminties metaforos ankstyvoje moderniojoje filosofijojeEugeny Malyshkin SantraukaStraipsnyje analizuojamas dviejų atminties metaforų – projekto ir talpyklos – santykis.

Abstract:
Abstract The place of memory in the thought and culture of early modern England has been often discussed, but usually in the context of the more esoteric aspects of Renaissance culture, such as "memory theatres." Using printed and manuscript sources, this essay reviews the uses of memory and contemporary attitudes toward its importance, with particular attention to its use in the preservation of the past. A distinction is posited between three levels of memory: personal, community, and social, each of which is studied in turn. It is suggested that the formation of a national historical culture in early modern England derives in part from the changing balance between dependence on memory and the use of the written!printed word to commemorate and communicate the past.

Abstract:
Memory impairment has been considered as one of the earliest clinical hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. This paper summarizes recent progress in the assessment of memory impairment in predementia stages. New promising approaches of memory assessment include evaluation of longitudinal cognitive changes, assessment of long-term memory loss, evaluation of subjective cognitive concerns and testing of other memory modalities, such as spatial memory. In addition, we describe new challenging memory tests based on memory binding paradigms that have been recently developed and are currently being validated.

Abstract:
The demonstration that the immediate-early gene c-fos is rapidly and transiently expressed in brain following a variety of manipulations has led to intense study of these genes to determine what physiological role they play. The very wide range of stimuli which lead to induction of immediate-early genes (IEGs) in the brain has raised concerns for the specificity of their actions and the suggestion that they might merely be involved in housekeeping functions. On the other hand, there is evidence that these genes may play a role in the transmission of information from cell surface receptors to the genetic material in many instances of neuronal plasticity, including development of seizure susceptibility (kindling), long-term potentiation, drug-induced changes, the phase shift in circadian rhythms, and spreading neuronal depression. In addition to being a putative third (or fourth) messenger involved in transduction of signals to the genetic material, activation of IEGs has proven to be a useful tool for the study of transsynaptic activation of certain neuronal pathways in the brain. Thus, studies on the induction of IEGs are proving to be especially useful in understanding some important functions and properties of the mammalian brain.Key words: immediate-early genes, brain, memory, neuronal plasticity, gene expression.
