This study investigated infant listening preferences for two versions of an unfamiliar Chinese children's song: unaccompanied (i.e., voice only) and accompanied (i.e., voice and instrumental accompaniment). Three groups of 5-, 8- and 11-month-old infants were tested using the Headturn Preference Procedure. A general linear model analysis of variance was carried out with gender and age as the between-subjects variables and listening time to the two renditions (unaccompanied, accompanied) as the within-subjects variable. Abstract:
This chapter aims to provide insights into the perspectives that arose from the data collection and analysis carried out by the Norwegian team of the Erasmus+ project REACT - Rethinking Music Performance in European Higher Education Music Institutions. The data was collected through a series of small-scale studies, including REACT - network activity at the University of Agder and the Academy of Music in Oslo, and an analysis of reports following the participation of a group of fourteen music performance students in a creative ensemble project at the University of Agder. We also refer to a small curriculum study conducted at the University of Agder. The study addressed some of the educational demands that emerged from extensive international research on music performance curricula and pedagogy in Higher Music Education during the early, mid, and late 2010s. The chapter highlights novel approaches to music performance, including community-based perspectives, creative ensemble collaborations, and improvisation in students' music education. These approaches aim to address the challenges that students face when pursuing professional careers in music today. The discussion sheds light on the ways in which music education curricula can be strengthened to support students entering their professional music careers and to broaden their musical thinking, thus preparing them to become contributors in society. The chapter references the small-scale research project Music for Microsculptures, an interdisciplinary student concert that reflects the results of data analysis and aspects often commented on in research on music performance curricula in Higher Education.

Abstract The rich diversity of Baltimore’s sound world—which included church music, brass bands, parade bands, ragtime, and early jazz groups—was a training ground for Webb. Baltimore’s ragtime and early jazz ensembles played music similar to the sound of James Reese Europe’s small groups: upbeat cakewalks and marches, and “ragged” versions of popular songs for dancing. Many musicians were classically trained and also played “hot” jazz in small clubs in East Baltimore and along Pennsylvania Avenue. Webb’s first professional jobs were with small bands at the dance halls and basement clubs around Pennsylvania Avenue. In the early 1920s Webb joined the Jazzeola Orchestra, led by clarinetist Percy Glascoe, which played on Captain George Brown’s excursion steamboat on Chesapeake Bay. Many of Baltimore’s best musicians moved or had moved to New York and Harlem in what might be called the Musicians’ Migration. Webb would be one.

Abstract:
Abstract Generally speaking, folk music comprises traditional, orally transmitted, and regionally and ethnically based genres of mu sic, often performed in small groups with a major everyday emphasis on face-to-face communication and social interaction (see Genre; Interaction, Face-To-Face). Early folklorists understood folk songs to differ both from popular music (tainted by professionalism, the profit motive, and mass media) and from art music (composed and per formed for an urban, educated elite). Folk songs, they thought, could be found only among an agrarian, illiterate peasantry; literacy, urbanization, and modernization were thought to work against folk tradition. This formulation meant that students of folk song were fated to preside over dying artifacts and that the nature and quality of folk song among descendants of settlers in the New World must be derivative and inferior. But as many of those European peasant cultures disappeared during the twentieth century, folklorists observed that folk songs and folk processes were alive and well among European and American working classes and well-knit ethnic groups, whether in rural areas or in cities.

Abstract:
This introduction overviews the book’s argument about how early Americans discovered the political power of music. Music had always been ground of contestation for early Americans but following the ratification of the US Constitution conservative elites in particular looked to music to persuade Americans to rise above political and partisan conflict to instead create a more unified, ordered, and deferential society. This conservative tradition of eliciting political effect from music’s improving, elevating, and refining effects as opposed to its more radical, or disruptive, qualities was intended to unite a diverse population in support of its leaders. However, it also placed music at the center of fraught debates over the proper relationship between the American people and their leaders. Despite resistance from various groups, conservative ideals of musical power successfully shaped perceptions of its political use at least through to the end of the American Civil War.

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter surveys the development of hymnody and music in the Adventist liturgy, beginning with the Millerite movement in the 1840s to the global ministry of the present. Music, particularly congregational song, has played an indispensable role in the development of Adventist identity. Early Adventists viewed their music as “songs of experience,” reflecting their societal marginalization, worship on the Sabbath, and hope of Jesus Christ’s soon return. As Adventism has grown, so has its musical pallet of styles, instruments, and ensembles. The denomination has struggled with which music to include in its worship. Liturgical practice and global songbook publications evidence a predominance of Western music, limiting local musical expressions. This study argues that singing one’s own experience cultivates harmony in diversity. It will interest other Christian groups to consider their own musical and liturgical practices, advocating for all people have a place at the table of the Lord.

Abstract:
Korean pop music, or K-pop, has emerged and taken its dominant place since the turn of this century, but its girl groups can trace their lineage back to the 1990s, while the dance music so characteristic of K-pop began in the dance music boom of the 1980s. This chapter examines the music, image, and performance styles of female dance divas from the 1980s into the 2000s. Its purpose is threefold: first, to properly historicize the female dance singers of Korean pop music within their socio-cultural contexts and trace how the image of sexuality has evolved from those early dance divas to the K-pop girl groups of today; second, to examine the ways in which multi-dimensional cultural meanings and voices are constructed through the music, performance styles, and images, atop discourses of body, gender, and sexuality; and third, to dispute earlier assumptions about Korean female dance singers as being merely innocent victims of the globalized commercial entertainment industry and patriarchal systems. This study seeks to reveal the female dance singers as major subjectivities in shaping modern Korean popular music, a role inevitably overshadowed by the strong critical discourse on K-pop girls that emphasizes their sexuality.

This chapter considers the role of music and dance in the definition of identity by families and individuals in Renaissance Venice, with particular reference to the use of domestic space for music-making. The integration of music into its social and architectural context is discussed in terms of the class identity of different groups. The contexts range from domestic entertainment to family festivities such as marriages. The chapter goes on to explore the kinds of music-making in different spaces in the Venetian dwelling, in terms of the size and loudness of the instrument; the type of music performed; and the size, function and decoration of the room. During the sixteenth century, increasingly specialised rooms were created for music-making, often linked to theatrical performance and/or dance. In parallel, the employment of professional musicians by elite families began to supersede amateur participation on important festive occasions.

Abstract Music groups for caregivers and young children are frequently included within programs of activities for families in early education and care settings. Additionally, such settings may have specific targets and outcomes that seek to improve the life chances of young children in disadvantaged circumstances; one key target may be the development of young children’s communication skills. This chapter overviews the evidence that appropriate musical activities are beneficial to learning and language development, challenging a view that words are the best starting point for communication. It seeks to offer a model of an effective music pedagogical approach, developed through action research with an interdisciplinary team of early childhood music-arts practitioners and speech and language therapists for caregivers and young children. Finally, the main findings from two projects are presented as practical implications, seeking to contribute new knowledge about working with children and their caregivers through musical play and interaction.

This chapter provides detailed studies of MNR-era musical acts that developed new directions in Bolivian national music that would influence major trends of the late 1960s and beyond. The first part examines the career, repertoire, and legacy of Conjunto 31 de Octubre, and also briefly discusses the activities of Conjunto Kollasuyo and a few other MNR era groups that represent early incarnations of what would become Bolivia’s Andean conjunto tradition. The second section illuminates how panpipe tropa music increasingly became an integral part of the cultural life of La Paz city, through a close look at the two groups that were at the forefront of this development, Los Cebollitas and Los Choclos. The third section explores Bolivia’s adoption and localization of the bolero trio or trío romántico ensemble format, focusing on the trajectory of singer Raúl Shaw and his backing bands, from his time in Mexico’s celebrated Trío Los Panchos, to his later activities with La Paz’s Los Indios (originally known as Los Peregrinos).
