This study explores the impact post-earthquake images from Christchurch, New Zealand inserted into a task requiring sustained attention or vigilance have on performance, selfreports of task-focus, and cerebra activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The images represent the current state of Christchurch; a city struggling to recover from devastating earthquakes that peaked in February, 2011, killing 185 people, injuring hundreds more and causing widespread and massive damage to infrastructure, land and building in the region. Major earthquakes are rare events in most countries but there have been cases in urban regions of fire following earthquakes. Its potential for growth and spread was again evident in the recent Northridge and Kobe earthquakes. This report identifies ways in which fire protection and fire engineering can work through public sector and private sector actions to reduce post-earthquake fire losses in urban building stock. It suggests a set of practical measures for building fire loss reduction that could be taken by territorial authorities, Fire Service, building owners and tenants, property and

Abstract:
This thesis examines the ground motion prediction component of earthquake loss estimation (ELE) frameworks and is based on the assertion that reducing the uncertainty in ground motion prediction will result in improved accuracy of loss estimates. The objective is to obtain improved ground motion predictions by identifying and quantifying the sources of uncertainty in the predictions, with particular focus on the portion of the uncertainty that can be reduced. The work presented in this thesis starts with an examination of ground motion measures commonly used in ELE and their relative utility.

THE CONCLUSION SHOWED THAT THE EARTHQUAKE INFLUENCED THE HOUSING PRICE TO DECREASE BY 15.84% AN AVERAGE IN THE RESEARCH AREA. HOUSING PRICE OF THE APARTMENT LIVING COMMUNITY WAS DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY, BUT FOR INDIVIDUAL RESIDENCES IT IS DOWN SLIGHTLY. ONE YEAR AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE, THE HOUSING PRICE IN THE RESEARCH AREA IS STILL POSSIBLE TO DECREASE. IN THE INTERVENATION MODEL, THE APARTMENT LIVING COMM

The purpose of this paper is to study the impact caused by the Tohoku 2011 earthquake, within the energy sector across the World. In order to measure results, a couple of methodologies that resorted to abnormal returns were undertaken and multiple significance tests were made to verify statistical relevancy on the findings. It has been possible to observe a positive reaction on the “Nuclear Energy” companies, as well as a negative impact on the “Renewable Energy” group, with the most prominent results coming from the second methodology. However, due to the lack of statistical significance acro

Such economic impacts can be evaluated by the input-output analysis which Leontief developed. Most studies evaluate the economic impact due to lifeline and transport interrupt. However we evaluate the impacts on firms’ revenue due to impaired buildings. Two scenario earthquakes with a return period of 475 years, Hsinchu Hsincheng earthquake (magnitude 7.5 ML and 10 km i

According to regression relationship (G-R relation) between the earthquake magnitude and frequency proposed by Gutenberg and Richter (1944), the expected number of tsunamigenic earthquake is estimated. Using the linear shallow water equations of COMCOT (COrnell Multigrid COupled Tsunami model), the propagation of tsunami in the ocean is simulated, and the reciprocal Green''s function was applied to save the comput

This event provided an opportunity to examine the efficient market hypothesis. Therefore, this paper will study its impact on the stock prices of Taiwan insurance companies and focus on whether the efficient market hypothesis can be supported or not.
