Two derailment modes are considered: by vibratory motion - during the ground motion - and by permanent track deformation - after the motion ended. Criteria for derailment that apply to both modes are derived in terms of peak transversal acceleration and peak transversal displacement. This allows a direct comparison between the two causes of derailment. We find that the first mode of derailment (by vibratory motion) dominates over the second mode (by track damage). The model considers the effect of spatial non-homogeneities in soil and structural characteristic and the incoherence of the ground motion into the assessment of derailment risk. The lateral motion experienced by the train under non-synchronous vibration of the track is obtained as the superposition of two contributions: one is the track motion at a fixed location and the other is the motion as the train travels on deformed tracks. Under linear elastic conditions, a method to obtain the power spectral density function for ground acceleration is presented and used to obtain acceleration and displacement response spectra.<br>(cont.) The second component of motion depends on speed. It is found that the train motion due to track deformation has small effects at ordinary speeds but that it becomes noticeable as the speed increases and the support spacing decreases. In general, it is shown that changes in soil and structural properties present a higher risk for derailment by vibratory motion. In some cases, the second component of train motion may increase the acceleration due to track motion at a single location by a factor of two. The analysis is first done assuming linear behavior of the soil and structure and then nonlinearities and permanent deformations are included. The elastic analysis is found to be adequate, except for structures with natural periods exceeding 1 second where the elastic analysis yields conservative estimates in comparison with the inelastic case.<br>by Lucile M. Detailed paleoseismic investigation of the Alpine Fault, South Island, New Zealand, has been undertaken at locations which bracket the central and north sections of the fault, between the Hokitika and Ahaura River. A total of seven trenches and pits have been excavated at four localities along approximately 75 kilometres of the fault. From these excavations a total of 16 radiocarbon dates provide age constraints on the timing of the most recent two earthquakes.
This trenching demonstrates that the most recent rupture occurred after 1660 AD, and most probably around 1700 - 1750 AD. There is consistent evidence for this event in the trenches in the central section of the fault. The surface rupture has extended into the north section of the fault as far as the Haupiri River area, which is 25 km northeast of the Alpine Fault junction with the Hope Fault. An earlier event at around 1600 AD can be recognised throughout the study area, and this is the most recent event in the trench locations north of the Haupiri River.
An updated record of landslide and aggradation terrace ages is consistent with two earthquakes over this period, but this does not significantly refine the estimates of their timing. However, the analysis of indigenous forest age in Westland and Buller reveals two periods of synchronous regional forest damage at 1625 ± 15 AD and 1715 ± 15 AD. I infer that these two episodes of forest damage correspond to the two earthquakes revealed in the trenches for this same time period. Analysis of growth rings in trees which are old enough to have survived these earthquakes indicates that the most recent event occurred in 1717 AD. The growth ring anomalies also indicate a northeast earthquake limit near the Haupiri River. The most recent 1717 AD event appears to have been a synchronous rupture for a distance of over 375 km, from Milford Sound in the south Westland section of the fault, northeast to the Haupiri River. Based on the forest disturbance record, the earlier earthquake at 1625 ± 15 AD had a rupture length of at least 250 km, but further work is required to determine the southwest and northeast limits of this event.
A range of methods is used here to estimate the probability of the next earthquake occurring on the central section of the Alpine Fault and all the calculated probabilities are relatively high. The most robust method, that of Nishenko and Buland 1987, suggests a conditional fifty-year probability in the order of 65 ± 15%. A sensitivity analysis indicates that the conditional probabilities of rupture are not significantly affected by assumptions regards the exact timing of the last earthquake, or even the number of most recent earthquakes, and conditional fifty-year probabilities of rupture remain at around 50% or higher.
Based on the previous earthquake events, the next Alpine Fault earthquake is likely to have a Moment Magnitude of 8 ± 0.25, and will have a widely felt regional impact. Very strong ground shaking will occur in the epicentral area of the Southern Alps and central Westland. For most of the central South Island the ground shaking is likely to be stronger than that experienced in any other historical earthquake.
Landslides and liquefaction will cause the greatest immediate damage to the natural environment, and in the longer-term increased sediment loads will cause aggradation, channel avulsion, and flooding in the numerous rivers which drain the epicentral region. There will also be substantial and widespread damage to the built environment, in some cases at a considerable distance from the epicentre. Because of the rugged nature of the topography of the central South Island, and the expected regional extent of the earthquake shaking, one of the greatest problems during the post earthquake recovery phase will be difficulty in communication and access.

Past earthquake events have shown that seismic damage to electrical power systems in commercial buildings, hospitals, and other systems such as public service facilities can cause serious economic losses as well as operational problems. A methodology for evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of electrical power systems is needed and all essential components of the system must be included. A key system component is the switchboard cabinet which houses many different elements which control and monitor electrical power usage and distribution within a building. Switchboard cabinets vary in size and complexity and are manufactured by a number of different suppliers; a typical cabinet design was chosen for detailed evaluation in this investigation.
This study presents a comprehensive framework for the evaluation of the seismic performance of electrical switchboard cabinets. This framework begins with the introduction and description of the essential equipment in building electrical power systems and explains possible seismic damage to this equipment. The shortcomings of previous studies are highlighted and advanced finite element models are developed to aid in their vulnerability estimation. Unlike previous research in this area, this study proposes practical, computationally efficient, and versatile numerical models, which can capture the critical nonlinear behavior of switchboard cabinets subjected to seismic excitations. A major goal of the current study was the development of nonlinear numerical models that can accommodate various support boundary conditions ranging from fixed, elasto-plastic to free.
Using both linear and nonlinear dynamic analyses, this study presents an enhanced evaluation of the seismic behavior of switchboard cabinets. First the dynamic characteristics of switchboard cabinets are determined and then their seismic performance is assessed through nonlinear time history analysis using an expanded suite of ground motions. The seismic responses and associated ground motions are described and analyzed using probabilistic seismic demand models (PSDMs). Based on the PSDMs, the effectiveness and practicality of common intensity measures are discussed for different components. Correlation of intensity measures and seismic responses are then estimated for each component, and their seismic performance and uncertainties are quantified in terms of engineering demand parameters. The results of this study are intended for use in the seismic vulnerability assessment of essential electrical equipment in order to achieve more reliable electrical power systems resulting in reduced overall risk of both physical and operational failures of this important class of nonstructural components.

The Crisis and Emergency-Risk Communication (CERC) model is effective in providing communication recommendations for public health agencies and shows potential for use by other agencies with similar crises characterizations. The current study explores the challenges of earthquake scientists in communicating earthquake risk during the pre-crisis stage in order to grasp experts’ experience and gain insight into the complex and multifaceted world of communicating earthquake risk. The researcher integrates the in-depth knowledge with the recommendations of the pre-crisis stage of the CERC model. This study employs qualitative interviewing with earthquake scientists (N = 21) from the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC). Categorized under general challenges, communication challenges, and communicating probability challenges, findings from this study indicate that earthquake scientists face eight unique challenges, such as communicating uncertainty, emphasizing their responsibility as solely hazard communicators, and keeping public attention during earthquake quiet periods. Implications for earthquake scientists during the pre-crisis stage of CERC are discussed and recommendations are provided.

La simulation de scenarios d’incendie nécessite de modéliser de nombreux processus complexe, particulièrement la combustion gazeuse d’hydrocarbure incluant la production de suie et les transferts radiatifs dans un écoulement turbulent. La nature turbulente de l’écoulement fait apparaitre des interactions qui doivent être prises en compte entre ces processus. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’implémenter une méthode de transport de la fonction de densité de probabilité afin de modéliser ces interactions de manière précise. En conjonction avec un modèle de flammelettes, le modèle de Lindstedt et un modèle à large-bande k-corrélé, l’équation de transport de la PDF jointe de composition est résolue avec la méthode des Champs Eulérien Stochastiques. Le modèle est validé en simulant 12 flammes turbulentes recouvrant une large gamme de nombre de Reynolds et de propension à former de la suie par les combustibles. Dans un second temps, les effets des interactions rayonnement-turbulence (TRI) sur l’émission de la suie sont étudiés en détails, montrant que la TRI tend à augmenter l’émission radiative de la suie à cause des fluctuations de température, mais que cette augmentation est plus faible pour des nombres de Reynolds élevés ou des quantités de suie plus élevées. Ceci est dû à la corrélation négative entre le coefficient d’absorption des suies et la fonction de Planck. Finalement, l’influence de la corrélation entre la fraction de mélange et le paramètre de non-adiabaticité est étudiée sur une flamme d’éthylène, montrant qu’elle a peu d’effet sur la structure moyenne de flamme mais tend à limiter les fluctuations de température et les pertes radiatives<br>The simulation of fire scenarios requires the numerical modeling of various complex process, particularly the gaseous combustion of hydrocarbons including soot production and radiative transfers in a turbulent. The turbulent nature of the flow induces interactions between these processes that need to be taken accurately into account. The purpose of this thesis is to implement a transported Probability Density function method to model these interactions precisely. In conjunction with the flamelet model, the Lindstedt model, and a wide-band correlated-k model, the composition joint-PDF transport equation is solved using the Stochastic Eulerian Fields method. The model is validated by simulating 12 turbulent jet flames covering a large range of Reynolds numbers and fuel sooting propensity. Model prediction are found to be in reasonable agreement with experimental data. Second, the effects of turbulence-radiation interactions (TRI) on soot emission are studied in details, showing that TRI tends to increase soot radiative emission due to temperature fluctuations, but that this increase is smaller for higher Reynolds numbers and higher soot loads. This is due to the negative correlation between soot absorption coefficient and the Planck function. Finally, the effects of taking into account the correlation between mixture fraction and enthalpy defect on flame structure and radiative characteristics are also studied on an ethylene flame, showing that it has weak effect on the mean flame structure but tends to inhibit both temperature fluctuations and radiative loss

<p> Earthquakes pose both primary and secondary threats to human life, health, and property. Primary threats include building collapse, landslide, and falling objects. Secondary threats may include tsunamis or fires. Fire following earthquake is a secondary earthquake risk that threatens urban populations in seismically active areas, such as Southern California. The damage from previous post-earthquake fires has far exceeded the damage from the earthquakes themselves. </p><p> Qualitative meta-analysis of many previous studies related to fire following earthquake is applied in this study to identify and describe the factors and interactions that contribute to the risk of fire following earthquake for urban Southern California. A simple risk assessment method is proposed that may inform decision makers of the degree of fire danger that exists following a significant earthquake. Application of the mitigation opportunities discussed in this study, hold the potential to save tens of thousands of lives in future earthquake events.</p><p>

It is well known that some driven systems undergo transitions when a system parameter is changed adiabatically around a critical value. This transition can be the result of a fundamental change in the structure of the phase space, called a bifurcation. Most of these transitions are well classified in the theory of bifurcations. Among the driven systems, spatiotemporally periodic (STP) potentials are noteworthy due to the intimate coupling between their time and spatial components. A paradigmatic example of such a system is the Kapitza pendulum, which is a pendulum with an oscillating suspension point. The Kapitza pendulum has the strange property that it will stand stably in the inverted position for certain driving frequencies and amplitudes. A particularly interesting and useful STP system is an array of parallel electrodes driven with an AC electrical potential such that adjacent electrodes are 180 degrees out of phase. Such an electrode array embedded in a surface is called an Electric Curtain (EC). As we will show, by using two ECs and a quadrupole trap it is posible to produce an electric potential simular in form to that of the Kapitza pendulum.
Here I will present the results of four related pieces of work, each focused on understanding the behaviors STP systems, long-range interacting particles, and long-range interacting particles in STP systems. I will begin with a discussion on the experimental results of the EC as applied to the cleaning of solar panels in extraterrestrial environments, and as a way to produce a novel one-dimensional multiparticle STP potential. Then I will present a numerical investigation and dynamical systems analysis of the dynamics that may be possible in an EC. Moving to a simpler model in order to explore the rudimentary physics of coulomb interactions in a STP potential, I will show that the tools of statistical mechanics may be important to the study of such systems to understand transitions that fall outside of bifurcation theory. Though the Coulomb and, similarly, gravitational interactions of particles are prevalent in nature, these long-range interactions are not well understood from a statistical mechanics perspective because they are not extensive or additive. Finally, I will present a simple model for understanding long-range interacting pendula, finding interesting non-equilibrium behavior of the pendula angles. Namely, that a quasistationary clustered state can exist when the angles are initially ordered by their index.

The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the seismic hazard in the Eastern Marmara Region using improved seismic source models and enhanced ground motion prediction models by probabilistic approach. Geometry of the fault zones (length, width, dip angle, segmentation points etc.) is determined by the help of available fault maps and traced source lines on the satellite images. State of the art rupture model proposed by USGS Working Group in 2002 is applied to the source system. Composite reoccurrence model is used for all seismic sources in the region to represent the characteristic behavior of North Anatolian Fault. New and improved global ground motion models (NGA models) are used to model the ground motion variability for this study. Previous studies, in general, used regional models or older ground motion prediction models which were updated by their developers during the NGA project. New NGA models were improved in terms of additional prediction parameters (such as depth of the source, basin effects, site dependent standard deviations, etc.), statistical approach, and very well constrained global database. The use of NGA models reduced the epistemic uncertainty in the total hazard incorporated by regional or older models using smaller datasets. The results of the study is presented in terms of hazard curves, deaggregation of the hazard and uniform hazard spectrum for six main locations in the region (Adapazari, Duzce, Golcuk, Izmit, Iznik, and Sapanca City Centers) to provide basis for seismic design of special structures in the area. Hazard maps of the region for rock site conditions at the accepted levels of risk by Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC-2007) are provided to allow the user perform site-specific hazard assessment for local site conditions and develop site-specific design spectrum. Comparison of TEC-2007 design spectrum with the uniform hazard spectrum developed for selected locations is also presented for future reference.

This study examines the use of performance-based engineering in earthquake liquefaction hazard analysis with Cone Penetration Test data (CPT). This work builds upon previous research involving performance-based liquefaction analysis with the Standard Penetration Test (SPT). Two new performance-based liquefaction triggering models are presented herein. The two models used in this liquefaction analysis are modified from the case-history based probabilistic models proposed by Ku et al. (2012) and Boulanger and Idriss (2014). Using these models, a comparison is made between the performance-based method and the conventional pseudo-probabilistic method. This comparison uses the 2014 USGS probabilistic seismic hazard models for both methods. The comparison reveals that, although in most cases both methods predict similar liquefaction hazard using a factor of safety against liquefaction, by comparing the probability of liquefaction, the performance-based method on average will predict a smaller liquefaction hazard.

This study area provides a unique opportunity to study the intersection of the Elsinore and West Salton detachment faults in southern California, effusing warm springs, and alteration products in the midst of the fault intersection. Structural mapping and compiling previous maps supply an interpretation of the fault zone geometries within the Tierra Blanca Mountains. Geochemical analysis of the crystalline basement and altered protolith help determine the effects of faulting and fluid flow in the study area. In the Tierra Blanca Mountains, the Elsinore strike-slip fault system transitions from the double-stranded Julian segment and Earthquake Valley fault in the northwest, to the single-stranded Coyote Mountain segment in the southeast. A network of cross faults striking northeast connects the fault segments. The Coyote Mountain segment encounters the inactive West Salton detachment fault in the study area. The detachment fault is a barrier to fluid flow and exhibits primarily brittle deformation, while the Coyote Mountain segment is a conduit for fluid flow along the northeastern flank of the Tierra Blanca Mountains. The damage zone of the Coyote Mountain segment reaches widths up to 500 m and contains intense fracturing and subsidiary faults striking parallel to the main trace. The tonalite protolith is bleached, stained, and altered from water-rock interactions. The most intense bleaching is at a county park, where the protolith is altered to clays and zeolites while the mineralogy of the stained regions contains iron oxides and clinochlore in addition to quartz, Ca-rich albite, and biotite preserved from the protolith. The water chemistry at Agua Caliente hot springs shows the fluid is partially equilibrated. Groundwater temperatures likely reached 75-85°C at depths up to 2.14 km before rising to the surface. Frequent seismicity in the study region is related to the spring characteristics including water level, conductivity, and temperatures. Spring temperature and conductivity displayed three behaviors during the summer 2011 logging period, attributed to seasonal changes and most likely local seismicity as well. Conductivity seems to be the property most influenced by earthquake activity in the area. Changes in fluid chemistry between sampling periods may indicate mixture with other fluid sources.

A method to detect relationships between disease susceptibility and multilocus genetic interactions is the Multifactor-Dimensionality Reduction (MDR) technique pioneered by Ritchie et al. (2001). Since its introduction, many extensions have been pursued to deal with non-binary outcomes and/or account for multiple interactions simultaneously. Studying the effects of multilocus genetic interactions on continuous traits (blood pressure, weight, etc.) is one case that MDR does not handle. Culverhouse et al. (2004) and Gui et al. (2013) proposed two different methods to analyze such a case. In their research, Gui et al. (2013) introduced the Quantitative Multifactor-Dimensionality Reduction (QMDR) that uses the overall average of response variable to classify individuals into risk groups. The classification mechanism may not be efficient under some circumstances, especially when the overall mean is close to some multilocus means. To address such difficulties, we propose a new algorithm, the Ordered Combinatorial Quantitative Multifactor-Dimensionality Reduction (OQMDR), that uses a series of testings, based on ascending order of multilocus means, to identify best interactions of different orders with risk patterns that minimize the prediction error. Ten-fold cross-validation is used to choose from among the resulting models. Regular permutations testings are used to assess the significance of the selected model. The assessment procedure is also modified by utilizing the Generalized Extreme-Value distribution to enhance the efficiency of the evaluation process. We presented results from a simulation study to illustrate the performance of the algorithm. The proposed algorithm is also applied to a genetic data set associated with Alzheimer's Disease.

L'insertion d'objets polymériques dans les solutions de molécules tensioactives conduit à des changements importants des propriétés macroscopiques: modification des constantes élastiques, séparations de phases, augmentation ou diminution de la viscosité. En particulier, le problème de polymères greffés sur des membranes fluides est l'objet d'intenses recherches du fait de ces nombreuses applications industrielles. L'objectif de cette thèse est de mieux comprendre les couplages entre conformations de la surface et des macromolécules: quand un polymère est greffé sur une paroi repulsive, certaines configurations autorisées en volume ne sont plus réalisables. La reduction d'entropie du polymère engendre alors une pression non homogène sur la surface. Les calculs peuvent être menés analytiquement pour une chaîne Gaussienne et montrent que le polymère exerce une force sur une région de taille comparable à son rayon de giration. Le problème important du volume exclu est introduit en notant que la pression est proportionnelle à la concentration en monomères au voisinage de la paroi. Cet argument de loi d'échelle est confirmé par des simulations Monte-Carlo, l'effet du volume exclu étant uniquement d'augmenter la portée de la pression. La surface de greffage étant déformable, celle-ci adopte un profil determiné par l'équilibre entre la contrainte appliquée par le polymère et l'énergie de courbure de la membrane. La déformation est d'abord conique au voisinage du point d'ancrage, puis relaxe avec une forme qui dépend des conditions aux limites. Dans le cas où plusieurs chaînes sont greffées, le champ de courbure de la membrane induit alors un potentiel d'interaction entre polymères. Ce potentiel est attractif (resp. répulsif) pour deux polymères ancrés du même côté (resp. du côté opposé) de la membrane. La dernière partie de la thèse est consacrée à l'étude du spectre de fluctuations d'une bicouche décorée. Contrairement à ce qu'indiquent les approches de champ moyen, l'integration explicite de tous les degrés de liberté des macromolécules montre que le module de courbure effectif dépend du vecteur d'onde considéré. Finalement, ce résultat est appliqué au calcul de l'exposant de Caillé d'une phase lamellaire décorée.

Nous nous intéressons au comportement asymptotique de plusieurs urnes de type Polya fortement renforcées et interagissantes. Le principal de notre étude porte sur les renforcements exponentiels ou assimilés ainsi que sur les interactions temporelles, c'est-à-dire lors desquelles les urnes n'interagissent qu'à certains instants aléatoires. Dans ce cas, nous mettons en évidence une transition de phase selon la fréquence des interactions. Si celle ci est supérieure à 1/2, les urnes se fixent toutes sur la même couleur tandis que si elle est inférieure à 1/2, une couleur majoritaire se dégage mais certaines urnes peuvent continuer à tirer une autre couleur aux instants où il n'y a pas interaction. Lorsque le renforcement devient infini, nous pouvons calculer la loi du nombre d'urnes se comportant de cette dernière façon quand le nombre total d'urnes est égal à deux ou est un nombre impair.Quand l'interaction est totale, c'est-à-dire quand toutes les urnes interagissent à tout instant, nous montrons alors qu'un renforcement fort et croissant, mais plus nécessairement exponentiel, suffit à obtenir la fixation de toutes les urnes sur la même couleur.Pour finir, nous discutons brièvement du modèle d'interaction spatiale dans lequel les urnes sont situées sur les sommets d'un graphe et n'interagissent qu'avec leurs voisines. The main results deal with exponential or exponential-like reinforcements and temporal interactions, that is when the urns interact only at some random times. In that case, we show the existence of a transition of phase depending on the frequency of interactions. If this frequency is larger than 1/2, all the urns eventually fixate on the same color, while if it is smaller than 1/2, a majority color will be fixed after some finite random time but while some of the urns eventually draw only the majority color, there can be other urns that still draw other colors at times where there is no interactions. Nous montrons ensuite, à travers l'étude expérimentale du couple streptavidine-biotine, qu'en ce qui concerne les interactions spécifiques entre molécules biologiques reliées à des surfaces, il reste encore beaucoup à comprendre. Cette thèse étudie le rôle des interactions entre interfaces dans les transitions de mouillage à partir de l?étude expérimentale du mouillage des alcanes sur l?eau. Effectuée par ellipsométrie, cette étude confirme que, dans les systèmes considérés, la transition de mouillage entre l?état de mouillage partiel, aux basses températures, et l?état de mouillage complet, aux températures élevées, est remplacée par la succession de deux transitions : une transition de mouillage du premier ordre suivie d?une transition de mouillage critique. L?état de mouillage intermédiaire observé entre les deux transitions est appelé " état de mouillage complet frustré ", car il correspond à l?observation d?un film de mouillage mésoscopique, que seules les interactions de van der Waals empêchent d?être macroscopique. La température expérimentale de transition de mouillage du premier ordre est en bon accord avec un calcul effectué dans le cadre de la théorie phénoménologique de Cahn, modifiée pour tenir compte des états de faible adsorption. La transition de mouillage critique est due aux interactions intermoléculaires de van der Waals, qui engendrent une interaction effective entre interfaces. La théorie DLP permet de décrire théoriquement cette interaction entre interfaces et de calculer précisément la température de transition de mouillage critique. L?utilisation d?une molécule tensioactive, l?AOT, permet d?abaisser considérablement la tension interfaciale entre un alcane et l?eau, et d?augmenter ainsi l?amplitude des fluctuations thermiques de l?interface correspondante. Cela permet alors d?étudier quantitativement la répulsion entropique entre interfaces due à ces fluctuations thermiques, et son influence sur la transition de mouillage critique. Soil liquefaction can cause devastating damage and loss and is a serious concern in civil engineering practice. One method for evaluating liquefaction triggering potential is a risk-targeted probabilistic approach that has been shown to provide more consistent and accurate estimates of liquefaction risk than traditional methods. This approach is a “performance-based” procedure which is based off of the performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) framework developed by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center. Unfortunately, due to its complexity, performance-based liquefaction assessment is not often used in engineering practice. However, previous researchers have developed a simplified performance-based procedure which incorporates the accuracy and benefits of a full performance-based procedure while maintaining a more simplistic and user-friendly approach. Until now, these simplified performance-based procedures have only been available for the SPT (Standard Penetration Test). With the increasing popularity of the CPT (Cone Penetration Test), a simplified procedure is needed for CPT-based liquefaction assessment. This thesis presents the derivation of a simplified performance-based procedure for evaluating liquefaction triggering using the Ku et al. (2012) and Boulanger and Idriss (2014) models. The validation study compares the results of the simplified and full performance-based procedures. The comparison study compares the accuracy of the simplified performance-based and traditional pseudo-probabilistic procedures. These studies show that the simplified performance-based procedure provides a better and more consistent approximation of the full performance-based procedure than traditional methods. This thesis also details the development of the liquefaction loading maps which are an integral part of the simplified method.

Les travaux présentés dans ce mémoire d'Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches se situent à la frontière entre la physique de la matière molle et le génie chimique et se nourrissent de la physique pour développer et donner des fondements scientifiques à de nouveaux concepts et outils pour l'ingénieur. Dans le cas de la filtration membranaire de colloïdes qui constitue la plus grand part de ces travaux, l'outil développé est le concept de flux critique qui a permis de définir des conditions opératoires de filtration critiques par rapport à la réversibilité du colmatage. La modélisation développée dans ces études a relié l'apparition de dépôts irréversibles sur les membranes aux phénomènes de transitions de phase dans les dispersions colloïdales contrôlés par la présence d'interactions physico-chimiques inter-particulaires. Les différentes études ont permis de développer à la fois des concepts expérimentaux et pratiques (avec la détermination de conditions critiques en filtration frontale et tangentielle et leur utilisation afin de conduire de façon optimale le procédé) et des concepts théoriques (modélisation des transitions de phase et simulation de l'impact des interactions sur le développement du colmatage dans le procédé). Les concepts théoriques développés, basés sur la description de l'effet des interactions sur l'accumulation de matière, ont permis d'unifier des modèles de description différents (loi de filtration sur gâteau, polarisation de concentration) à partir d'une approche unitaire. La prise en compte de la complexité générée par les interactions physico-chimiques dans le procédé de filtration simplifie au final la description du colmatage. De façon plus large, ces études et les perspectives qui y sont associées devraient contribuer à développer une branche du génie du procédé parallèle au génie de la réaction chimique : le génie des interactions physico-chimiques.

L'angle d?avalanche d'un tas de billes de verre dans un cylindre est modifié en présence de<br />forces de cohésion. Nous nous sommes intéressés dans un premier temps à l'étude de l'évolution lente,<br />ou «vieillissement», de l'angle d'avalanche avec l'âge du tas. Nous avons montré que l'augmentation logarithmique<br />du coefficient de friction effectif entre les billes dépend de l'humidité de l'atmosphère, ce<br />qui peut être expliqué quantitativement par une augmentation progressive de la force d'adhésion due à<br />la condensation de liquide entre les grains. Nous avons également mis en évidence d'autres paramètres<br />influençant le vieillissement : usure, position du tas au repos ; et observé des effets de vieillissement en<br />présence d'éthanol. Nous avons étudié en détail la métastabilité et les effets de nucléation de la condensation<br />capillaire. Nous avons calculé l'énergie d'activation pour condenser un pont liquide entre deux surfaces<br />parallèles parfaitement lisses. Cette énergie d'activation diverge quand la taille du confinement s'approche<br />de la distance critique de nucléation. Ainsi, l'énergie d?activation est très souvent très supérieure à l'énergie<br />d'agitation thermique. Nous avons ensuite montré qu'il est possible de faire un modèle de condensation<br />capillaire thermiquement activé entre les rugosités des billes qui rend compte de la dépendance temporelle<br />du vieillissement observé avec les billes de verre. Enfin, nous avons construit un appareil à forces de surface<br />qui permet d'étudier les interactions statiques et dynamiques entre les surfaces à l'échelle du rayon de Kelvin,<br />c'est à dire à l'échelle du nanomètre. Après avoir décrit le principe et les performances de cet appareil,<br />nous exposons des premiers résultats concernant la nanorhéologie de fluides simples en milieu confiné ainsi<br />que des mesures de la dépendance de la force d'adhésion entre des surfaces de verre par rapport à la force<br />normale et au temps de contact.

Seismic rehabilitation of structural systems is an effective approach for reducing potential seismic losses such as social and economic losses. However, little or no effort has been made to develop a framework for making decisions on seismic rehabilitation of structural systems that systematically incorporates conflicting multiple criteria and uncertainties inherent in the seismic hazard and in the systems themselves.
This study develops a decision support framework for seismic rehabilitation of structural systems incorporating uncertainties inherent in both the system and the seismic hazard, and demonstrates its application with detailed examples. The decision support framework developed utilizes the HAZUS method for a quick and extensive estimation of seismic losses associated with structural systems. The decision support framework allows consideration of multiple decision attributes associated with seismic losses, and multiple alternative seismic rehabilitation schemes represented by the objective performance level. Three multi-criteria decision models (MCDM) that are known to be effective for decision problems under uncertainty are employed and their applicability for decision analyses in seismic rehabilitation is investigated. These models are Equivalent Cost Analysis (ECA), Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT), and Joint Probability Decision Making (JPDM). Guidelines for selection of a MCDM that is appropriate for a given decision problem are provided to establish a flexible decision support system. The resulting decision support framework is applied to a test bed system that consists of six hospitals located in the Memphis, Tennessee, area to demonstrate its capabilities.

This research contributes to a very active body of literature on the application of Automated Data Collection Systems (ADCS) and openly shared data to public transportation planning. It also addresses the interaction between transit demand and land use patterns, a key component of generating time-varying origin-destination (O-D) matrices at a route level. An origin-destination (O-D) matrix describes the travel demand between two different locations and is indispensable information for most transportation applications, from strategic planning to traffic control and management. A transit passenger's O-D pair at the route level simply indicates the origin and destination stop along the considered route. Observing existing land use types (e.g., residential, commercial, institutional) within the catchment area of each stop can help in identifying existing transit demand at any given time or over time. The proposed research addresses incorporation of an alighting probability matrix (APM) - tabulating the probabilities that a passenger alights at stops downstream of the boarding at a specified stop - into a time-varying O-D estimation process, based on the passenger's trip purpose or activity locations represented by the interactions between transit demand and land use patterns. In order to examine these interactions, this research also uses a much larger dataset that has been automatically collected from various electronic technologies: Automated Fare Collection (AFC) systems and Automated Passenger Counter (APC) systems, in conjunction with other readily available data such as Google's General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) and parcel-level land use data. The large and highly detailed datasets have the capability of rectifying limitations of manual data collection (e.g., on-board survey) as well as enhancing any existing decision-making tools. This research proposes use of Google's GTFS for a bus stop aggregation model (SAM) based on distance between individual stops, textual similarity, and common service areas. By measuring land use types within a specified service area based on SAM, this research helps in advancing our understanding of transit demand in the vicinity of bus stops. In addition, a systematic matching technique for aggregating stops (SAM) allows us to analyze the symmetry of boarding and alightings, which can observe a considerable passenger flow between specific time periods and symmetry by time period pairs (e.g., between AM and PM peaks) on an individual day. This research explores the potential generation of a time-varying O-D matrix from APC data, in conjunction with integrated land use and transportation models. This research aims at incorporating all valuable information - the time-varying alighting probability matrix (TAPM) that represents on-board passengers' trip purpose - into the O-D estimation process. A practical application is based on APC data on a specific transit route in the Minneapolis - St. Paul metropolitan area. This research can also provide other practical implications. It can help transit agencies and policy makers to develop decision-making tools to support transit planning, using improved databases with transit-related ADCS and parcel-level land use data. As a result, this work not only has direct implications for the design and operation of future urban public transport systems (e.g., more precise bus scheduling, improve service to public transport users), but also for urban planning (e.g., for transit oriented urban development) and travel forecasting.

Dans cette thèse, nous explorons le comportement critiques de chaînes de spins gouvernées par des interactions à décroissance algébrique. Dans une première partie, nous étudions le diagramme de phase d'une chaîne de Potts en utilisant un algorithme multicanonique. Nous proposons une nouvelle méthode de détection de l'ordre des transitions de phase exploitant les points spinodaux. A l'aide de cette méthode, nous localisons la ligne séparant les transitions du premier et du second ordre avec une précision sans précédent, et mettons en évidence un effet de taille finie inhabituel. Dans une deuxième partie, nous introduisons une nouvelle méthode multicanonique intégrant un algorithme de mise-à-jour collective des spins. Cette méthode, extrêmement souple, étend considérablement l'intervalle de tailles simulables, et s'avère bien plus précise que les méthodes multicanoniques usuelles. Nous appliquons cette méthode à l'étude d'effets de taille finie dans le cadre de transitions du premier ordre : les résultats suggèrent fortement que les configurations correspondant à des phases en coexistence sont caractérisées par une dimension fractale dépendent du taux de décroissance de l'interaction. Dans un dernier chapitre, nous étudions une chaîne d'Ising régie par des interactions à longue portée en présence de champs aléatoires à distribution bimodale, et prouvons l'existence d'un point tricritique pour des interactions à décroissance lente.

Characterization of the seismic hazard and ground-failure hazard of a site using traditional empirical lateral spread displacement models requires consideration of uncertainties in seismic loading, site conditions, and model prediction. Researchers have developed performance-based design methods to simultaneously account for these sources of uncertainty through the incorporation of a probabilistic analytical framework. While these methods can effectively handle the various sources of uncertainty associated with empirical lateral spread displacement prediction, they can be difficult for engineers to perform in a practical manner without the use of specialized numerical tools. To make the benefits of a performance-based approach accessible to a broader audience of geotechnical engineers, a simplified performance-based procedure is introduced in this paper. This map-based procedure utilizes a reference soil profile to provide hazard-targeted reference displacements across a geographic area. Equations are provided for engineers to correct those reference displacements for site-specific soil conditions and surface geometry to produce site-specific, hazard-targeted estimates of lateral spread displacement. The simplified performance-based procedure is validated through a comparative study assessing probabilistic lateral spread displacements across several cities in the United States. Results show that the simplified procedure closely approximates the results from the full performance-based model for all sites. Comparison with deterministic analyses are presented, and the place for both in engineering practice are discussed.

Seismically-induced liquefaction has been the cause of significant damage to infrastructure and is a serious concern in current civil engineering practice. Several methods are available for assessing the risk of liquefaction at a given site, each with its own strengths and limitations. One probabilistic method has been shown to provide more consistent estimates of liquefaction risk and can be tailored to the specific needs of a given project through hazard-targeted (i.e. based on return periods or likelihoods) results. This type of liquefaction assessment is typically called “performance-based,” after the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center's performance-based earthquake engineering framework. Unfortunately, performance-based liquefaction assessment is not easily performed and can be difficult for practicing engineers to use on routine projects. Previous research has shown that performance-based methods of liquefaction assessment can be simplified into an approximation procedure. This simplification has successfully been completed for the Cetin et al. (2004) empirical, probabilistic standard penetration test -based liquefaction triggering model. Until now, such a simplification has not been performed for another popular liquefaction triggering model developed by Boulanger and Idriss (2012). As some engineers either wish to use or are required to use the Boulanger and Idriss (2012) model in their liquefaction assessments, there is a need for a simplified performance-based method based on this model to supplement that based on the Cetin et al. (2004) model. This thesis provides the derivation of a simplified performance-based procedure for the assessment of liquefaction triggering using the Boulanger and Idriss (2012) model. A validation study is performed in which 10 cities across the United States are analyzed using both the simplified procedure and the full performance-based procedure. A comparison of the results from these two analyses shows that the simplified procedure provides a reasonable approximation of the full performance-based procedure. This thesis also describes the development of liquefaction loading maps for six states and a spreadsheet that performs the necessary correction calculations for the simplified method.

Les modèles de polymères idéaux ne rendent pas bien compte de l'élasticité de cette molécule, alors qu'ils décrivent très bien l'ADN double brin. Nous avons donc étudié expérimentalement l'élasticité d'une molécule simple brin dans différentes conditions salines, i.e. d'écrantage de charges, et dans des conditions modulant les interactions internes du polymère. En utilisant des conditions dénaturantes, nous avons pu séparer les effets des différentes interactions intramoléculaires et ainsi mieux caractériser leur importance respective pour décrire l'élasticité de la molécule. Il est ressorti de ces mesures qu'une description complète de l?ADN simple brin doit prendre en compte d'une part la formation de structures secondaires à basses forces, et d'autre part les effets de volume exclu: contrairement au double brin, le simple brin est tellement flexible que les répulsions électrostatiques dues aux groupements phosphates le long de la chaîne ne peuvent plus être négligées. Des simulations numériques prenant en compte ces deux effets sont en excellent accord avec nos observations expérimentales. Dans la seconde partie de cette thèse, nous avons étudié l'activité de deux hélicases à l'échelle de la molécule unique. Les hélicases sont des moteurs moléculaires qui catalysent la séparation des deux brins de la double hélice d?ADN, permettant ainsi l'accès aux bases individuelles formant le code génétique. Dans notre expérience, une unique molécule d'ADN double brin était immobilisée par pinces magnétiques et son extension mesurée avec une précision de 10 nm. Ceci nous a permis de suivre l'activité des hélicases, puisque celles-ci provoquent un changement de l'extension de la molécule lorsque le double brin est converti en simple brin. Cette méthode présente l'avantage de permettre l'observation en temps réel de l'activité d'une seule protéine. L'analyse statistique des données nous a permis d'accéder aux distributions complètes de vitesse et de processivité des enzymes. Nous avons ainsi caractérisé le comportement dynamique d?hélicases uniques (leur vitesse, leur processivité, leur coopérativité et leur pas élémentaire sur l'ADN). Le suivi en temps réel de l'activité des hélicases nous a permis d'observer une instabilité dans leur mode d'ouverture, et ainsi de rendre compte de mesures de vitesse obtenues en volume.

Neste trabalho o transporte de nêutrons é simulado em materiais presentes no núcleo de reatores. O espectro de nêutrons é decomposto como uma soma de três distribuições de probabilidade. Duas das distribuições preservam sua forma com o tempo, mas não necessariamente sua integral. Uma das duas distribuições é devido ao espectro de fissão, isto é, altas energias de nêutrons, a outra é uma distribuição de Maxwell-Boltzmann para nêutrons de baixas energias (térmicos). A terceira distribuição tem uma forma a priori desconhecida e que pode variar com o tempo, sendo determinada a partir de uma simulação Monte Carlo com acompanhamento dos nêutrons e suas interações com dependência contínua de energia. Isto é obtido pela parametrização das seções de choque dos materiais do reator com funções contínuas, incluindo as regiões de ressonâncias resolvidas e não resolvidas. O objetivo deste trabalho é implementar efeitos de up-scattering através do tratamento estat ístico da população de nêutrons na distribuição térmica. O programa de simulação calcula apenas down-scattering, pois o cálculo do up-scattering microscópico aumenta signi_cativamente tempo de processamento computacional. Além de contornar esse problema, pode-se reconhecer que up-scattering é dominante na região de energia mais baixa do espectro, onde assume-se que as condições de equilíbrio térmico para nêutrons imersos em seu ambiente são válidas. A otimização pode, assim, ser atingida pela manutenção do espectro de Maxwell- Boltzmann, isto é, up-scattering é simulado por um tratamento estatístico da população de nêutrons. Esta simulação é realizada utilizando-se dependência energética contínua, e, como um primeiro caso a ser estudado assume-se um regime recorrente. As três distribuições calculadas são então utilizadas no código Monte Carlo para calcular os passos Monte Carlo subsequentes.<br>In this work the neutron transport is simulated in reactor core materials. The neutron spectrum is decomposed as a sum of three probability distributions. Two of the distributions preserve shape with time but not necessarily the integral. One of the two distributions is due to prompt ssion, i.e. high neutron energies and the second a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution for low (thermal) neutron energies. The third distribution has an a priori unknown and possibly variable shape with time and is determined from a Monte Carlo simulation with tracking and interaction with continuous energy dependence. This is done by the parametrization of the material cross sections with continuous functions, including the resolved and unresolved resonances region. The objective of this work is to implement up-scattering e ects through the treatment of the neutron population in the thermal distribution. The simulation program only computes down-scattering, for the calculation of microscopic upscattering increases signi cantly computational processing time. In order to circumvent this problem, one may recognize that up-scattering is dominant towards the lower energy end of the spectrum, where we assume that thermal equilibrium conditions for neutrons immersed in their environment holds. The optimization may thus be achieved by the maintenance of the Maxwell-Boltzmann spectrum, i.e. up-scattering is simulated by a statistical treatment of the neutron population. This simulation is performed using continuous energy dependence, and as a rst case to be studied we assume a recurrent regime. The three calculated distributions are then used in the Monte Carlo code to compute the Monte Carlo steps with subsequent updates.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a comprehensive model analysis in a three-dimensional spatial frame for the dynamics of molecular particles in dilute colloidal suspensions in solutions flowing inside pores of variable width, subject to hydrodynamic forces, Brownian motion and diffusive collisions at the rough pore boundaries, by using numerical simulations. The approach by simulations is necessary because it is extremely complex to use analytical tools at present to deal with the problem of diffusive collisions of the particles at the solid pore boundaries. The algorithms which we have developed and the corresponding simulations are sufficiently general and refined to be directly applied to the study of the dynamics of a wide variety of polymer and biological particles in dilute solutions under diverse physical and applicable hydrodynamic conditions inside pores. Moreover, the mechanisms leading to the adhesion of particles of nano sizes under what would be non-equilibrium conditions, due to the conflicting influence of the mechanical diffusive collisions and the attractive Hamaker forces at the boundaries, are of major interest. We have hence investigated a theoretical model to calculate the restitution coefficient from basic physical principles. The objective is to quantify the energy balance during the process of a diffusive collision of a nano particle under the influence of the repulsive forces on one hand, and the attractive Hamaker forces acting on the nano particle on the other. This is done by developing a model, based on the JKR and Hertz theories, to account for the energy losses during collisions, and for the energy gains due to the Hamaker interactions. Adhesion becomes an outcome if the energy balance permits this. Our theoretical model is developed by proposing a special analytic approach based on the Hamaker potential. We derive from the theoretical analysis a characteristic nonlinear equation for the restitution coefficient, and analyze its properties which determine under given physical conditions the outcome for adhesion or not.

Dans nos expériences nous étudions les mécanismes moléculaires de la friction aux interfaces solide-liquides simples et tout particulièrement le rôle des interactions solide-liquide et de la rugosité, à l'échelle nanométrique. Nous utilisons une technique de vélocimétrie laser en champ proche (VLCP) développée récemment au laboratoire et qui permet de mesurer directement la vitesse moyenne du fluide à la paroi. Les précédentes expériences avaient mis en évidence qu'un liquide simple l'hexadécane, glissait à la paroi, en condition de mouillage total ou en condition de mouillage partiel. Nous élargissons la technique de la VLCP pour l'étude d'un autre liquide simple, le squalane en apportant des modifications sur les conditions expérimentales à appliquer. Les résultats sur différentes surfaces lisses, en condition de mouillage total ou en condition de mouillage partiel, montrent que le squalane tout comme l'hexadécane, présente un glissement à la paroi (la longueur de glissement observée est beaucoup plus grande que la dimension des molécules de fluides). Ce glissement est moins important sur surface mouillante que sur surface non-mouillante, mais est toujours présent. Cependant le squalane glisse toujours moins que l'hexadécane sur surface identique. Nous attribuons cette différence vis à vis du glissement, à la forme de la molécule de liquide. En effet, pour une tension superficielle voisine, la molécule de squalane (alcane ramifié) est beaucoup plus ronde et compacte que celle de l'hexadécane (alcane linéaire). Pour caractériser les effets de la rugosité sur le glissement, nous avons étudié le comportement de l'hexadécane sur différentes surfaces à rugosité contrôlée à l'échelle nanométrique. Ces surfaces sont fabriquées en greffant sur une monocouche lisse d'oligomères SiH terminés, des nanoparticules de polymères hyperbranchés dont on fait varier la dimension et la densité de greffage. Nous présentons qualitativement les rôles respectifs de la hauteur et de la dimension latérale de la rugosité sur la diminution du glissement à la paroi. Ces résultats sont comparés avec les récentes simulations numériques.

Les jonctions tunnel magnétiques monocristallines Fe(100)/MgO(100)/Fe(100) élaborées par Epitaxie par Jet Moléculaire sont des systèmes modèles pour la validation de concepts spécifiques au transport polarisé en spin dans les multicouches cristallines. L'analyse de la structure de bande montre que le Fe(100) apparaît comme un demi-métal au regard de la symétrie D1 : cette nouvelle notion de polarisation en terme de symétrie électronique explique les formidables effets magnétorésistifs prédits dans ce système. Nos résultats magnétorésistifs valident les effets de filtrage en symétrie et montrent l'influence de la structure électronique sur le transport dont les mécanismes dépassent le modèle des électrons libres. Parallèlement, la croissance bidimensionnelle du MgO a permis l'élaboration de fines couches de MgO pour lesquelles nous avons fourni la première mise en évidence expérimentale d'une interaction antiferromagnétique entre deux couches magnétiques par effet tunnel polarisé en spin.

Les objectifs de cette thèse visent le développement d'un traitement inédit dans un repère spatiale tridimensionnel, pour le problème de la dynamique de collisions diffusives d'objets macromoléculaires en solution en écoulement hydrodynamique à l'intérieur des pores de largeur variable, soumis aux forces hydrodynamiques, du mouvement brownien et des collisions diffusifs aux parois des pores, en utilisant la modélisation théorique et les simulations numériques. L'approche par simulation numérique est nécessaire car il est extrêmement complexe d'utiliser des outils analytiques à présent pour traiter le problème de ces collisions diffusives aux parois solides. Les algorithmes que nous avons développés et les simulations correspondantes sont suffisamment généraux et avancés pour être directement appliquée à l'étude de la dynamique d'une grande variété de polymère et des particules biologiques dans des solutions diluées sous diverses conditions physiques et hydrodynamiques à l'intérieur des pores. Par ailleurs, les mécanismes conduisant à l'adhésion de nano particules et de particules macromoléculaires sous conditions de non-équilibre, en raison de l'influence contradictoire des collisions mécaniques diffusifs et les forces attractives de Hamaker aux parois solides, sont d'un intérêt majeur. Nous avons donc développé un modèle théorique pour calculer le coefficient de restitution. L'objectif est de quantifier le bilan énergétique pendant le processus de collision diffusive de ces particules aux parois, sous l'influence des forces de répulsion d'une part et les forces attractives de Hamaker. Cela se fait par l'élaboration d'un modèle, basé sur le JKR et les théories d'Hertz, pour tenir compte des pertes d'énergie lors des collisions et des gains d'énergie en raison des interactions Hamaker. L'adhésion arrive si le bilan énergétique le permet. Notre modèle théorique est développé en proposant une approche particulière basée sur le potentiel Hamaker. Nous démontrons ce bilan par le biais d'une équation caractéristique non linéaire pour le coefficient de restitution, et analysons ses propriétés qui déterminent l'adhésion ou non pour diverses conditions physiques initiales.

Le microscope à force atomique (AFM) est un outil privilégié pour sonder la matière à l'échelle nanométrique. Dans cette thèse, nous l'utilisons comme instrument de mesure de force. Nous montrons que la mesure des fluctuations thermiques des ressorts permet de déterminer précisément leur raideur à condition d'utiliser un modèle qui prend en compte la forme des modes et la méthode de détection. A l'aide de nouvelle méthodes d'analyse des courbes de rétraction, nous étudions la conformation de polymères et de copolymères adsorbés, ainsi que l'interaction spécifique entre un complexe du nickel (Ni-NTA) et l'acide aminé histidine. Nous mettons en évidence des comportements inattendus en présence de liens multiples et nous en proposons une interprétation basée sur un équilibre entre formations et ruptures des liaisons. Nous présentons des premiers résultats expérimentaux concernant la transition conformationnelle de la polylysine sous étirement.

Les séismes sont le résultat de glissements rapides le long de failles actives chargées en contraintes par le mouvement des plaques tectoniques. Il est aujourd'hui établi, au moins pour les grands séismes, que la distribution de ce glissement rapide le long des failles pendant les séismes est hétérogène. Imager la complexité de ces distributions de glissement constitue un enjeu majeur de la sismologie en raison des implications potentielles dans la compréhension de la genèse des séismes et la possibilité associée de mieux anticiper le risque sismique et les tsunamis. Pour améliorer l'imagerie de ces distributions de glissement co-sismique, trois axes peuvent être suivis: augmenter les contraintes sur les modèles en incluant plus d'observations dans les inversions, améliorer la modélisation physique du problème direct et progresser dans le formalisme de résolution du problème inverse. Dans ce travail de thèse, nous explorons ces trois axes à travers l'étude de deux séismes majeurs: les séisme de Tohoku-Oki (Mw 9.0) et de Sumatra-Andaman (Mw 9.1-9.3) survenus en 2011 et 2004, respectivement<br>Earthquakes are the results of rapid slip on active faults loaded in stress by the tectonic plates motion. It is now establish - at least for large earthquakes - that the distribution of this rapid slip along the rupturing faults is heterogeneous. Imaging the complexity of such slip distributions is one the main challenges in seismology because of the potential implications on understanding earthquake genesis and the associated possibility to better anticipate devastating shaking and tsunami. To improve the imaging of such co-seismic slip distributions, three axes may be followed: increase the constraints on the source models by including more observations into the inversions, improve the physical modeling of the forward problem and improve the formalism to solve the inverse problem. In this PhD thesis, we explore these three axes by studying two recent major earthquakes: the Tohoku-Oki (Mw 9.0) and Sumatra-Andaman (Mw 9.1-9.3) earthquakes, which occured in 2011 and 2004 respectively

Cette thèse présente une étude de films monomoléculaires d'acides gras à l'interface eau-air, principalement par microscopie à l'angle de Brewster. Cette technique permet l'observation directe des coexistences de phases lors de transitions de phases du premier ordre; de plus elle est sensible à l'anisotropie optique des films. La première partie contient une étude du diagramme de phase des acides gras, qui comporte des mésophases analogues aux phases de cristaux liquides smectiques. Nous avons montré que lors des transitions de phases entre phases denses, la texture (l'arrangement moléculaire)des phases est réversible et nous avons obtenu des informations sur l'ordre des transitions. Nous avons aussi mis en évidence, dans deux phases constituées de molécules verticales, une très faible anisotropie optique due à la forme rectangulaire du réseau moléculaire. Nous avons ensuite étudié une film d'acide myristique adsorbé à la surface d'une solution aqueuse d'acide myristique. Nous avons observé des domaines d'une mésophase "inclinée" contenant des lignes de défauts d'orientationmoléculaire présentant des fluctuations thermiques. La mesure de leur amplitude a permis de déterminer la tension de ces lignes. Nous nous sommes aussi intéressés aux constantes élastiques qui gouvernent la forme et la texture à l'équilibre des domaines de mésophase. Nous avons d'une part déterminé la tension de ligne de l'interface entre une phase liquide et une mésophase "inclinée" en étudiant la forme des domaines. Celle-ci résulte de l'équilibre entre la tension de ligne, qui favorise des domaines circulaires, et les interactions répulsives à longue portée entre dipoles moléculaires, qui forment les domaines. Des mesures de potentiel de surface ont permis de calculer l'intensité des forces dipolaires. d'autre part, la texture d'autre domaines de cette mésophaseinclinée nous a renseigné sur la valeur du rapport entre l'élasticité de courbure de la direction moléculaire et l'anisotropie de la tension de ligne.

This study examines the use of performance-based approaches in liquefaction hazard analysis. Two new methods of performance-based liquefaction initiation analysis are proposed which use the works of Juang et al. (2012) and Boulanger and Idriss (2012). Further advances are made by incorporating the performance-based magnitude scaling factors as proposed by Cetin et al. (2012). Using these new equations a comparative study is made between the three methods. Further comparisons are made between the performance-based approaches and the more widely used deterministic approaches. The comparisons reveal that on average for the 11 sites used in this study, the performance-based approaches tend to be slightly less conservative than deterministic approaches overall, with large differences possible for some locations in the country. They also reveal that the newer performance-based approaches are generally less conservative than the approach proposed by Kramer and Mayfield (2007). Some cases where this relationship does not hold true and the new relationships are more conservative are outlined.

Nous étudions expérimentalement et modélisons les différents régimes d'écoulements granulaires secs dans un tube vertical.<br />Pour des débits de grains élevés et moyens, on observe respectivement un régime de chute libre et un régime d'ondes de densité (succession de zones denses en billes et de régions plus diluées). Un modèle a été développé afin de prédire les relations entre les différents paramètres de l'écoulement (débit, pression, compacité); il démontre notamment le rôle essentiel joué par les interactions entre l'air et les grains. Il est ainsi possible d'estimer les forces de frottement entre les billes et les parois du tube ainsi que les différentes composantes du transport de l'air et des grains.<br />Pour des débits de grains plus faibles, on observe un régime d'écoulement compact intermittent pour lequel pression de l'air et compacité sont fortement corrélées. Un fort effet d'amplification des fluctuations de pression a également été identifié lorsque l'onde de décompaction se propage vers le haut du tube au démarrage de l'écoulement. La modélisation du régime intermittent fait apparaître le rôle primordial des frottements entre les grains et les parois. Pour mieux les comprendre, une étude spécifique a été entreprise pour étudier l'évolution de l'écrantage du poids d'une colonne de grains en mouvement relatif par rapport aux parois (modèle de Janssen). Cette étude a montré que ce modèle reste valable sur une large gamme de vitesses. Par ailleurs, le mouvement des parois provoque un réajustement des distributions des forces dans la colonne, qui atteint un état d'équilibre dynamique stationnaire très reproductible. Dans toutes ces expériences, l'influence de l'humidité a également été étudiée et une forte variation de l'interaction grains/parois a été mise en évidence.

Cette thèse décrit deux études expérimentales distinctes sur des couplages originaux entre un cristal liquide et des surfactants.<br />La première étude porte sur l'organisation de systèmes lyotropes (surfactants et eau) dans un solvant thermotrope anisotrope (cristal liquide). L'existence d'une phase baptisée « nématique transparente » dans un tel système mixte thermotrope-lyotrope de type microémulsion a été en effet récemment débattue. Des expériences de diffusion dynamique de lumière, au voisinage de la transition isotrope-nématique, laissait supposer l'apparition d'une phase intermédiaire, résultant de la compétition entre l'apparition d'un ordre nématique dans le solvant et des effets d'ancrages sur les agrégats.<br />Nous avons caractérisé, dans un premier temps, par diffusion de rayonnement X et neutrons, la morphologie et les interactions d'agrégats, composés de bromure de didodecyldimethylammonium (DDAB) et d'eau, dans le cristal liquide 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) en phase isotrope. L'étude de l'évolution des diagrammes de phases couplée à des expériences de diffusion (X, Lumière et neutrons) a permis de montrer que l'ajout de cosurfactants permettait de faire varier continûment la taille des nanoagrégats. L'ensemble de nos données expérimentales s'explique bien par la présence d'interactions fortes de Van der Waals entre micelles, ce qui justifie en particulier l'absence de transition microémulsion/ lamellaire gonflée dans ce système. L'analyse des facteurs de structure a permis par ailleurs de mettre en évidence une seconde interaction attractive entre micelle, causée par les fluctuations paranématiques du cristal liquide, intervenant essentiellement à l'approche de la transition isotrope-nématique du cristal liquide. Nous discutons de cette nouvelle interaction à la lumière des résultats de nos expériences de diffusion.<br />La deuxième étude porte sur les émulsions directes eau-cristal liquide en présence de surfactants amphotropes que nous avons synthétisés et caractérisés par RMN. La formulation de ces surfactants visait à renforcer leur localisation exclusive à l'interface eau-cristal liquide. Les émulsions obtenues montrent la formation spectaculaire de gouttes allongées cylindriques de type filaments. Les propriétés statiques et dynamiques de ces objets ont été explorées et l'origine de cette instabilité est explicitée. La longueur des microtubes est modifiable par des gradients de concentration ou des variations de température ce qui nous a permis de discuter du mécanisme régissant leur morphologie.

Les travaux exposés dans ce manuscrit sont consacrés à l'étude de la dynamique hors équilibre de chaînes quantiques décrites par le modèle XY. Nous commençons par considérer la dynamique unitaire obtenue par la mise en contact de sous-systèmes voisins thermalisés à des températures différentes. L'état initial de la chaîne est alors inhomogène et la dynamique tend à l'homogénéisation. Lorsque le système est initialement divisé en deux sous-systèmes semi-infini préparés aux températures $T_b=\infty$ et $T_s$ nous obtenons analytiquement la fonction de Green associée à la dynamique du courant et du profil d'aimantation. Les résultats sont généralisés pour les températures $T_b$ finies permettant l'étude de l'état stationnaire. Dans le cas particulier où $T_s=T_b=0$, nous étudions le comportement de l'entropie d'intrication entre sous-systèmes. Cette quantité présente un accroissement "rapide", prédit par la théorie conforme (dans le cas d'un système critique), suivi d'une relaxation algébrique vers la valeur d'équilibre. Dans la dernière partie la dynamique du système est obtenue par l'interaction avec l'environnement, décrite par le processus d'interactions répétées. Nous examinons la structure de la matrice densité réduite du système et donnons une équation d'évolution de l'ensemble des corrélateurs à deux points. Finalement, nous étudions l'évolution temporelle du modèle $XX$ en contact avec un ou deux bains aux températures $T_1$ et $T_2$. Lorsque $T_1=T_2$, l'étude du comportement du système, pour les temps courts, dévoile l'état stationnaire. Dans la situation $T_1\ne T_2$, nous vérifions numériquement que le profil d'aimantation est plat et proposons l'introduction d'un désordre dynamique qui permet l'installation d'un gradient d'aimantation.

La matière nucléaire présente une transition de phase du type liquide-gaz. Ce caractère bien connu est dû au profil de l'interaction nucléaire (attractive à moyenne portée et répulsive à courte portée). Ainsi, la thermodynamique de la matière nucléaire symétrique est analogue à celle d'un fluide de Van der Waals. L'étude se révèle plus complexe dans le cas de la matière asymétrique, composée de neutrons et protons en proportion arbitraire. L'isospin, qui distingue les deux constituants, donne une mesure de cette proportion. Dans l'étude de la matière asymétrique, il s'agit d'un degré de liberté supplémentaire, ajoutant une dimension à l'espace des observables à considérer. <br />La transition liquide-gaz nucléaire est associée au phénomène de multi-fragmentation observé dans les collisions d'ions lourds, ainsi qu'à la physique des étoiles compactes : les systèmes concernés sont riches en neutrons, donc affectés par le degré de liberté d'isospin. <br />Le travail présenté ici est une étude théorique des effets d'isospin apparaissant dans la transition liquide-gaz de la matière nucléaire asymétrique. Une approche de champ moyen est employée, avec une interaction nucléaire effective de type Skyrme. Nous démontrons la présence d'une transition du premier ordre pour la matière asymétrique, et étudions le phénomène de distillation d'isospin qui l'accompagne. Le cas d'une séparation de phase à l'équilibre thermodynamique est comparé à celui d'une décomposition spinodale. Les effets de taille finie sont abordés, ainsi que l'influence du gaz d'électrons présent dans le contexte astrophysique.

Les suspensions colloïdales magnétiques sont utilisées dans de nombreuses applications pratiques. Toutefois, leurs propriétés structurales et dynamiques, en particulier en présence d'un champ appliqué, restent mal connues. Dans ce but, nous avons adopté une approche qui couple une modélisation par simulation numérique de dynamique brownienne à plusieurs techniques expérimentales sur des dispersions aqueuses préparées «sur mesure». L'emploi de la diffusion de rayonnement, en particulier de neutrons, a permis d'une part, l'élucidation de la structure locale et d'autre part, l'examen de la dynamique de translation à plusieurs échelles. L'effet d'un champ extérieur a été mesuré et évalué parallèlement par la simulation numérique. De plus, la dynamique de rotation a été sondée par la relaxation de biréfringence magnéto-optique. La confrontation des résultats expérimentaux et de simulation numérique complète la compréhension du système, soulignant le rôle des interactions dipolaires.

The goal of this Ph.D. Thesis is to show and discuss implications of the main aspects of different governing laws in the description of all phases of seismogenic processes: nucleation, dynamic propagation and energy release, healing, arrest and mutual interactions between faults. This has been done by implementing or developing numerical codes and algorithms able to solve, in various dimensionalities, the fully dynamic, spontaneous problem. At first, we investigate on the physical mechanisms responsible for for long-term interactions. It has been argued that postseismic relaxation field might be responsible of such long-term interactions; then, our first task is understand whether or not the postseismic stress field can produce not negligible perturbations (respect to the tectonic field) and lead to long-term variations on a seismogenetic system.
The second task of this work is to systematically investigate on the effects of long-term interactions in the seismic data. In particular, we focus our attention on the perturbation induced by the greatest earthquakes of the last century, all occurred in the period 1952-1965.
At global scale, we study the distribution of strong earthquakes (M ≥ 7.0), and specifically we try to understand whether spatial and temporal distribution of M ≥ 7.0 earthquakes occurred after 1965 is correlated with the perturbation due to the 5 giant earthquakes Kamchatka 1952, Aleutins 1957, Chile 1960, Alaska 1964, and Aleutins 1965.
At local scale, we aim to understand the effects of long-term interactions on moderate seismicity. In particular, we study the effects of the two strongest event of the past century (Chile 1960 and Alaska 1964) in Southern California, where is available a catalog (complete with focal parameters estimation) for moderate seismicity (M ≥ 4.7) since 1933.
Finally, we study the effects of long-term stress perturbations on volcanic systems. The interaction between strong tectonic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions has been found through various statistical analysis of catalogs [e.g., Linde and Sacks, 1998; Marzocchi, 2002; Marzocchi et al., 2002]. Anyway, some authors remain skeptical because of the retrospective approach used in those works.
