Abstract:
The study presented aims to provide the most viable seismic retrofit solution for rural masonry. Muzffarabad is one such region where excess of unreinforced masonry structures claimed thousands of lives during 2005 earthquake. Field study was conducted in the region to familiarize with the dynamics of local construction industry before suggesting a suitable retrofit solution. Polypropylene (PP-) band retrofit has been selected as the most viable solution for retrofitting existing masonry structures in terms of cost, material availability and ease of application. To prove the efficiency of PP-b

As a capstone to several Mid-America Earthquake Center (MAE Center) projects, a full-scale two story unreinforced masonry (URM) building was tested following the application of several retrofit techniques, which included the use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) overlays, near surface mounted (NSM) rods, vertical unbonded post-tensioning, and joist anchors. The test structure was composed of four URM walls, flexible timber diaphragms and interior stud walls, and was designed and built following construction practices consistent with those used in Mid-America prior to 1950. About half of the total building stock in Turkey is masonry type building. Masonry buildings in Turkey, especially in rural areas, are constructed without any engineering knowledge mostly by their own residents. They generally have heavy roofs. Masonry type buildings also have thick and heavy wall materials. Heavy roof and wall material generate large inertial forces in the case of an earthquake. Brittle failure of walls leads to total failure of whole system followed by sudden collapse of heavy roof. Timber has been a widely used construction material throughout the history of human development and it is still popular to this day. Timber frames are a common structural form used in historical and modern day structures. An effective means to connect timber members together is via bolts or dowels due to their high strength, ductile behaviour and flexibility in application. Such joints are, however, vulnerable and prone to damage especially during seismic attacks. In order to improve the performance and longevity of timber framed structures, it is necessary to develop simple but effective stre

Over 90% of the land area of Turkey lies over one of the most active seismic zones in the world. Hazardous earthquakes frequently occur and cause heavy damage to the economy of the country as well as human lives. Unfortunately, the majority of buildings in Turkey do not have enough seismic resistance capacity. The most commonly observed problems are faulty system configuration, insufficient lateral stiffness, improper detailing, poor material quality and mistakes during construction. Strengthening of R/C framed structures by using cast-in-place R/C infills leads to a huge construction work and

Many buildings constructed during the middle of the 20th century were constructed with criteria that fall short of current requirements. Although shortcomings are possible in all aspects of the design, the inadequacies in terms of seismic design present a more pressing issue to human life. This risk has been seen in various earthquakes that have struck Italy recently, and subsequently, the codes have been altered to account for this underestimated danger. Structures built after these changes remain at risk and must be retrofitted depending on their use. This report centers around the Giovanni
