Faber gave revealing service to Steven Berkoff by issuing simultaneously two volumes, Collected Plays Volume One (East; West; Greek; Sink the Belgrano; Massage and Lunch) and Volume Two (Decadence; Kvetch; Acapulco; Harry's Christmas; Brighton Beach Scumbags; Dahling You Were Marvellous; Dog/Pitbull; Actor), priced at £9.99 each. This supplanted the earlier Faber Berkoff collection, Decadence and Other Plays (including East and West), which I lament, in that it united some of his best writing in a single volume priced at less than ten pounds, such as I felt assured in requiring my students to buy for a single week's detailed work. These volumes contain more variable material at a higher price; Volume One is the stronger, but if I set it, I expect justifiable economic complaint. With the British student grant being eroded systematically in terms of real economic worth, this provides occasion for my suspicion that if playtexts cost less, students would buy more of them, creating in turn a more theatrically and socially informed, literate and inquisitive public readership of playtexts, rather than a readership confined to economically safe, carefully predetermined limitations. Speaking of predetermined limitations, some of these presented themselves to me strikingly in a survey of Berkoff's work which seemed exhaustive to the point of repetition. The central image of Dog/Pitbull—a sketch of a ‘repulsively attractive’ man and his pet, ‘amplification of his own insane and undirected energy’—seemed the kernel of both volumes’ content.

Spurder Steine (Trail of Stones) is probably the best-known of the approximately two dozen East German films that were banned by state officials. Combining epic proportions with subversive humor, the picture still retains the ability to fascinate and amuse audiences well over three decades after its completion in 1966. In one scene, its most arresting protagonist, the foreman Balla, leads his small band of carpenters across the Iunar landscape of the chemical plant under construction, where the film is set. As martial music blares in the background, the “Ballas,” conspicuously dressed in the black corduroy suits traditionally associated with their trade in Germany, march against a sea of humanity streaming toward a political rally. They rudely shove people out of their way, grope women, and chug beer. Over a loudspeaker, the Communist functionary leading the rally proclaims, “We are already building the road leading into a bright future.” In response, Balla remarks to his cronies, “They comfort you with the future like the priests with the hereafter, but by the time you get there, you're already dead.”

The article deals with the basic principles and rules of discourse eastern negotiation, you need to know to effectively manage the communication process in the countries of the East. The author notes that the political communication in the East have a bright national specifics, here specific relation to time and space, the culture and traditions. Of particular importance are high context negotiation communication, a high content of non-verbal signs, indirect communication style, expressed the emphasis on personal connections and relations, underlined the value status. Despite the fact that the East is represented by a variety of national cultures, its system of political communications is woven from a large number of original negotiating practices, we can talk about the features of the eastern negotiating culture in general, because some of the important principles of communication common to most Eastern cultures. The article substantiates the conclusion that the basic characteristics of the eastern negotiating culture significantly different from the Russian and Western, but the sociocultural barriers can be overcome, if we pay attention to the basic rules of discourse eastern and eastern wisdom.

AbstractBased on an account of the Brighton Photo-Biennial Memory of Fire: The War of Images and Images of War, curated by Julian Stallabrass in late 2008, this essay considers the photographic coverage of the recent imperialist interventions in the Middle East. Taking its cue from Stallabrass's event, it reflects on the decline of documentary and photojournalism since the Vietnam War and the current attenuated politics of the media. It argues that the problem of the sublime extends beyond the current genre of 'aftermath'-photography and asks what might constitute a more cognitively adequate politics of the image.

This includes work with the East Sussex Social Service Secure Facility, the Medway Secure Training Centre, the Brighton & Hove Youth Offending Team, Queensdown EBD School and the East Sussex Special Placements Scheme.I read Professor Pearce's paper (Pearce, 1999) with interest, but felt that there were a number of important omissions. I also felt that the perspective taken on some areas was itself so ‘medical’ as to be unhelpful in supporting truly collaborative work with professionals from a different background.

Throughout her life, Christina Rossetti was an enthusiastic writer and player of word games in verse. When she was seventeen, for instance, she spent the summer of 1848 in Brighton playing bouts-rimés sonnets with her brother, William. Together they timed themselves to see how fast they could write lines of verse to a given set of end rhymes: “emotional devastation in ten minutes or less,” Anne Jamison wittily puts it (145). Two years later, Rossetti published under her initials instances of different word games – an enigma (“Name any gentleman you spy”) and a charade (“My first is no proof of my second”) – as part of a series of riddling word games in verse by various authors in the Marshall's Ladies Daily Remembrancer: For 1850. They count among Rossetti's first poetic publications. These popular riddling genres, while perhaps less familiar to readers today, were immediately recognizable to Rossetti's contemporaries. In his 1872 riddle anthology, Guess Me, F. D. Planché defines an “Enigma” as a riddle in verse, or “the most ancient form of Riddle . . . often a real poem as well as a question for solution” (3). In the 1891 Cornhill Magazine, the article “Riddles” glosses a “charade” as a riddle that “turns upon the letters or syllables composing a word” (518). By publishing an enigma and a charade in Marshall's Ladies Daily Remembrancer, an inexpensive pocket book for women, Rossetti capitalized on the association of these genres as written by and for middle-class women, a point that I will argue in more detail later.

I hope you have all settled well into your new jobs and a very warm welcome to those that have recently joined the ‘family’ of acute medicine. I would first of all like to thank Ruth Johnson for all her hard work as trainee representative over the last 18 months and wish her all the best as she ventures into consultant territory: her replacement will be announced later in the autumn. July was a busy month, dominated by our Acute Medicine Awareness Week, during which AMUs across the UK undertook events to raise the profile of the speciality and the important work they were doing locally. Barnsley completed a 25 mile virtual marathon, Crosshouse Hospital made £350 in a cake sale, Salford Royal staff walked around every acute medical unit in Greater Manchester, North Staffordshire staff ran a half marathon and there was more cake on sale in Kings College and Leicester Royal. The AMU staff at Southampton raised over £400 with their cake sale and cycle challenge, during which they were joined by the Trust Chief Executive for a ‘virtual’ 120 miles on an exercise bike situated outside the hospital entrance. The highlight, however was the contribution of Dr Nigel Lane, an acute medicine trainee from Southmead Hospital in North Bristol, who put together an outstanding weekly programme of events. This included a visit from the Chief Executive of the trust, visit from local GPs to the unit, daily MDT teaching, daily ‘messages of the day’ located on the trust website and lots of screensavers, banners and information scattered throughout the hospital. I am delighted to announce that Nigel has received the SAM awareness week prize. This involves the opportunity to join the European School of Internal Medicine and attend the winter EFIM school camp in Latvia. Nigel will also be joining us as one of the speakers in the trainee session at SAM Brighton. He will be speaking on “Preparing for your PYA”. There will also be talks in the trainee session on “Keeping your e-portfolio updated”, “Choosing your specialist skill” and “Preparing for your consultant job”. The session will be aimed at both junior and senior trainees. The trainee that has produced the best poster at Brighton will also have a chance to win a place to attend the summer EFIM school camp. The day before the conference starts there will be a SCE revision session. I attended last year and found it extremely helpful! Looking forward to seeing you all in Brighton. Regional screen archives, including film, video and digital media, protect the local vicinity’s film heritage. Such archives generally fall outside the fashion historian’s consciousness. There is a wealth of information on fiction film and fashion, but non-fiction film remains an underused source. This article examines the Screen Archive South East (SASE) based at the University of Brighton. The archive has a rich collection of amateur and professional non-fiction film from the late nineteenth century to the present day. The archive’s resources inspired a collaborative project between the SASE and the Royal College of Art (RCA) entitled Screen Search Fashion. It investigated dress from the inter-war period, an era that saw significant changes in fashion. The resulting online resource includes film clips, stills, descriptions, contextual information and links to further archival sources. This article iscusses the Screen Search Fashion project and presents three case studies showing how the films at SASE offer a rare glimpse into people’s lives and their clothing choices.

Like much of the United Kingdom, arts communities in the South East were largely paralysed during the lockdown in spring 2020 through the temporary closure of venues in Brighton, the Towner Eastbourne, the De La Warr Pavilion Bexhill, Hastings Contemporary and Hastings Museum, and numerous smaller arts, music and theatre venues along the coast. Many gallery staff were on furlough and online content tended to be provided by larger institutions elsewhere, apart from grassroots activities such as Hasting’s Isolation Station broadcast on Facebook. The closure of arts institutions all along the East Sussex Coast and the absence of their habitual signalling felt like an inverse phenomenon and uneasy foreboding. grounded was devised in response to this regional silence and the curators, Claudia Kappenberg and Fiontán Moran reflected on the project for MIRAJ.

The Los Angeles locales photographer Kevin McCollister takes you to the places you can’t buy a ticket to. His blog and book project that grew out of it, East of West L.A., tells a different L.A. story — one that is subtler, nuanced and found only through patience. McCollister takes in the city by foot, armed with two cameras. Sometimes observing more than actually documenting. The city that emerges within these frames isn’t the one of iconic palm streets, expensive cars, expansive civic-center vistas — but one that lives in the shadows of our imagination. Workaday strivers, lost-people, forgotten emotional territories. The work tells us stories about the space between the L.A. dream and reality. While McCollister is certainly “documenting” Los Angeles — his images evoke something more chambered — internal, contemplative, elegantly transitory. They play like memory and fantasy fused and evoke a Los Angeles that feels personal: one that’s private, but not exclusive. The images open a window on an unexpected L.A., contradictory, complex, and elusive as the city is itself.

None of you could have known at the time of the MESA elections in the summer and early fall of 2000 that you would be giving me the opportunity to serve as your president in the post-September 11, 2001 era, when public interest in the Middle East, demands on those with expertise in the region, and incongruously, attacks on MESA, university-based programs in Middle East Studies, and more than a few individual MESA members have reached unprecedented levels. Serving as your president in this period has been a more exciting ride than it would have been at almost any other time I can imagine; I thank you all for making it possible. Now, at the turn of the millennium, the threat is brought out again. Today “the human time bomb” connotes uncontrolled fecundity in the Other, the non-Western or non-European. Demographic research shows that many countries in the Middle East and North Africa have among the highest rates of population growth in the contemporary world. Unlike Europe, where the nightmare of demographers and politicians is the aging and decreasing population, the Middle East still has a rapidly increasing and young population. Quite clearly, many politicians in the European Union are worried about the “uncontrollable overflow” of populations over its borders from the southern and eastern Mediterranean shores.

This article investigates the degree to which the East Germans have acted on the freedoms they gained after the fall of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Initially, many observers expected that the East Germans would quickly take advantage of their political, religious, and economic freedoms to become as entrepreneurial, partisan, and religious as their Western counterparts. Over the past decade, however, social scientists have discovered the persistence of ‘Leninist legacies,’ arguing that the East Europeans’ socialization under communism will make them reluctant to act on the before-mentioned freedoms. Contrary to both of these expectations, we find considerable variation in the Easterners’ behavior. In the economic sphere, while the Easterners have been willing to engage in legal market activity, they have been reluctant to get involved with gray market activity. In the political realm the elites have embraced partisan politics more thoroughly than have ordinary citizens. Finally, the Easterners have flocked neither to the Catholic and Protestant churches nor to new religious movements like Scientology. These results suggest that the combination of Western rights and Eastern Leninist legacies has created a unique incentive structure in East Germany. The Easterners face a different cost-benefit calculus than do the Westerners and, as a result, at times are less willing to act on their positive freedoms.

ObjectivesA key UK public health priority is to reduce HIV incidence among gay and other men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aimed to explore the social and environmental context in which new HIV infections occurred among MSM in London and Brighton in 2015.DesignA qualitative descriptive study, comprising in-depth interviews, was carried out as a substudy to the UK Register of HIV Seroconverters cohort: an observational cohort of individuals whose date of HIV seroconversion was well estimated. An inductive thematic analysis was conducted in NVivo, guided by a socio-ecological framework.SettingParticipants were recruited from six HIV clinics in London and Brighton. Fieldwork was conducted between January and April 2015.ParticipantsAll MSM eligible for the UK Register Seroconverter cohort (an HIV-positive antibody test result within 12 months of their last documented HIV-negative test or other laboratory evidence of HIV seroconversion) diagnosed within the past 12 months and aged ≥18 were eligible for the qualitative substudy. 21 MSM participated, aged 22–61 years and predominantly white.ResultsA complex interplay of factors, operating at different levels, influenced risk behaviours and HIV acquisition. Participants saw risk as multi-factorial, but the relative importance of factors varied for each person. Individual psycho-social factors, including personal history, recent life stressors and mental health, enhanced vulnerability towards higher risk situations, while features of the social environment, such as chemsex and social media, and prevalent community beliefs regarding treatment and HIV normalisation, encouraged risk taking.ConclusionsRecently acquired HIV infection among MSM reflects a complex web of factors operating at different levels. These findings point to the need for multi-level interventions to reduce the risk of HIV acquisition among high-risk MSM in the UK and similar settings.

Peter Dale is the principal author of Dangerous Families, which was first published in 1986. In it, he described an assessment and therapeutic approach to working with child abuse developed by the Rochdale Special Unit of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) in Britain. In 1986, Peter became the Manager of the NSPCC Child Protection Team in East Sussex. He is also a Visiting Research Fellow in Social Policy and Social Work at Sussex University. By tradition, palaeontologists use the Linnaean scheme in the classification of fossil organisms. But what about the naming of rocks or sequences of rocks in which those fossils occur; or what about those rocks which never had even a whiff of an organism at the time of their formation? My favourite rock name is Charnockite, named from the tombstone of Job Charnock, an employee of the East India Company and the founder of Calcutta, who by legend “after the death of his wife, every year sacrificed a cock to her memory in the mausoleum” (Dictionary of National Biography, 1990) until his own death in January 1693. But it is not individual rock types that form the subject of this note; rather it is larger sets of related rocks, whether sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic in origin. Description of related sets of rocks requires schemes of nomenclature that are widely accepted and used; these, in themselves, must be firmly based on an internationally agreed set of principles, and there must be wide dissemination of additions to the nomenclature.

Since this is my last gesture as President of the Association I should like to thank you all warmly for the honor you have done me in electing me as President and for the opportunity of working with the Board of Directors and with the Secretary, Michael Bonine, on your behalf. It also happens that I am just about to finish a book on the history of Islamic societies. In a very different way this project has also been a special privilege. I have been able to branch out from my basic and abiding interest in the Arab Middle East and from my studies in early Islamic history to learn something about Muslim peoples all over the world. To learn so much and to work out a way of presenting such a large subject in a coherent way has made this a wonderfully rewarding project. Like a great puzzle, it has occupied my mind for seven years. I hope that the book I am writing will return the rewards of this learning to the reader.

This paper argues that there is a phonological opposition between falling and non-falling utterance-terminal tunes in East Norwegian intonation. East Norwegian intonational foci are characterized by a rising pitch movement and there is no way that you can raise the pitch even further to express “rising intonation”. What you obtain instead is a distinction between a focal rise followed by a terminal fall in pitch and a focal rise without a subsequent falling terminal. The falling vs. non-falling terminal contrast is utilized differently in Intonation Units (IUs) with just one Intonational Phrase (IP) than in IUs with more than one Intonational Phrase. In the former type of IU structure a falling terminal constrains the illocutionary potential of the communicative act; in the latter type the falling terminal adds an attitudinal bias, without constraining the illocutionary potential. While most non-falling and falling terminals in connected discourse can ultimately be related to the difference between “openness” and “finality”, respectively, this intonational contrast is shown to have a seemingly quite different function in imperatives.

The paper evaluates the attempt to launch a National Dialogue process in Ukraine backed by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (osce) from the perspective of its teleology, design and impact in the context of the aggravating internal divisions, problematic legitimacy of the post-Maidan leadership, Russia actively backing the forces in opposition to the interim government in Kiev and subversive of the integrity of the Ukrainian state, and peaked geopolitical tensions in the broader region. in the run up to the extraordinary presidential election in Ukraine scheduled for 25 May 2014, the osce backed the launching of a National Dialogue to prevent further escalation of the destructive and increasingly violent internal conflict. The efforts aimed at the consolidation of the Ukrainian political elite from across the country, including in the rebellious East and South regions, and across the political spectrum, also involving the party of the fugitive President Yanukovych. This endeavor, by the osce Swiss Chairmanship, provides insight into the opportunities and limitations of the top-down and elite-based approach to the National Dialogue in Ukraine, particularly in comparison with the local grassroots dialogue initiatives in the divided communities as well as the center-region dialogue formats, on the one hand, and with the extra-national formats of talks involving Ukraine and Russia, on the other. Besides, lack of the strategic sequencing and embeddedness of short-term objectives of the stakeholders to either keep or challenge the political status quo and long-term accommodation of political differences by the reformed political and administrative arrangements and national reconciliation prevented the National Dialogue from gaining the momentum, was prohibitive of its continuity and did not get traction with the population irrespective of the political preferences. There were objective reasons that prevented proper design and implementation of the dialogue, such as urgency, extreme polarisation and strong pressure on the post-Maidan leadership at the time from opposing constituents that ardently rejected dialogue, a factor that could not be ignored against the backdrop of the upcoming series of elections. However the osce political imperative had prevailed over the professional approach to the design and facilitation of the National Dialogue. In particular, no clear agenda that resonated with the diverse constituencies’ actual needs and grievances was developed, no broad consultations had been held prior to the dialogue, disagreements between the stakeholders regarding the participation were not resolved, and the very design of the events, including media presence, was not conducive of the genuine deliberation and joint search for the mutually acceptable short-term and long-term trajectory of the country.

China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ (OBOR) initiative is a grand plan to connect Asia, Europe and East Africa economically. However, from India’s point of view, China’s attempt at what it describes as geo-economic expansion appears as a geopolitical threat because of China’s activity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This essay assesses the extent to which OBOR is (i) realistic and achievable, (ii) a genuine threat to India and (iii) amenable to possible Indian involvement. It concludes that India should continue to be wary of its neighbour in national security terms, but has no option but to cooperate with China economically by participating in OBOR if it seriously wishes to increase economic growth and bring the ‘Make in India’ and Sagarmala projects to fruition. In particular, India should seriously consider allowing Chinese companies to develop one or more Indian ports with associated infrastructure and manufacturing.

This article examines the different reactions in North East England to the results of both the Scottish Independence Referendum in September 2014 and the General Election in May 2015. It outlines how the region's relief at the ‘No’ vote quickly gave way to traditional fears – once the Smith Commission had reported – that a more powerful Scotland would undermine economic fortunes just south of the border. To fear of a more powerful ‘neighbour’ was added a noticeable level of political hostility towards the SNP in particular, as the virtual wipe out of Labour MP's in Scotland in May's General Election has left many North East Labour politicians (in the party's one remaining heartland) uncertain and anxious about their own political future. However, the North East of England has also tried to harness the referendum outcome in more practical ways. In the first instance, using it to strengthen its own case to Westminster for greater devolved powers and, secondly, to explore opportunities for a more collaborative, cross-border approach to economic development. The article concludes by contrasting the growing disjunction between the increasingly sympathetic and supportive views of North Easterners towards what's happening in Scotland, and the hostile views of many North East Labour politicians. Those advocating that the region should work with the Scots, and gain the support of more powerful SNP group in Westminster for greater devolution in England, have a real challenge to overcome the hostile views of North East politicians towards both nationalism and nationalists.
