Abstract:
Women were an integral part to the Easter Rising, yet until recently, their contributions have been forgotten. Those who have been remembered are often women who bucked conservative Irish society’s notions of femininity and chose to actively participate in combat, which has led to a skewed narrative that favors their contributions over the contributions of other women. Historians and scholars favor these narratives because they are empowering and act as clear foils to the heroic narratives of the male leaders in the Easter Rising. In reality, however, most of the women who joined Cumann na mBan or worked for the leaders of the Easter Rising chose to do so knowing they would take on a supportive role. They did so willingly, and even put the cause of Irish independence above the need for women’s rights. Their duties reflected this reality. Once the Easter Rising was underway, women were needed to support the rebels and did so often under fire from British and Irish fighters. For their participation in the rebellion, some women were arrested, while as a whole, the contributions of these women were derided and downplayed by the larger public. Those women not imprisoned would go on to establish the martyr-myth of the heroic and male Irish revolutionaries executed for their part in the Easter Rising. This led to the women’s histories being forgotten or ignored in favor of the heroic narrative. Even when pensions were made available to compensate participants of the Easter Rising, women only applied out of need and for fear of poverty, rather than to receive recognition. To this day, Ireland and Irish history scholars have ignored the participation of gender-conforming women in favor of the more heroic narrative of women whose experiences more closely resemble those of the Easter Rising’s male martyrs.

Githens-Mazer, Jonathan. "Cultural and political nationalism in Ireland : myths and memories of the Easter Rising." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2005. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1838/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the political transformation and radicalisation of Ireland between the outbreak of the First World War, August 1914, and Sinn Fein's landslide electoral victory in December 1918. My hypothesis is that the repertoire of myths, memories and symbols of the Irish nation formed the basis for individual interpretations of the events of the Easter Rising, and that this interpretation, in turn, stimulated members of the Irish nation to support radical nationalism. I have based my work on an interdisciplinary approach, utilising theories of ethnicity and nationalism as well as social movements. With these theoretical tools, I go on to categorise the Easter Rising as a 'cultural trigger point': an event or series of events that creates a sense of agency and urgency in the face of what is perceived by the members of the nation as an injustice. These perceptions were reflected through the prism of Irish national myths, memories and symbols of the preceding three hundred years, including the Penal Laws and the Famine. My method here is to compare the condition of popular Irish nationalism before and after the Easter Rising in order to assess the impact of this event and its aftermath on the Irish nation. I trace, in particular, the impact of the Great War on cultural and religious nationalism and its role in the decline of moderate nationalism and the rise of radical Irish nationalism. The analysis of this process of radicalisation is accomplished through an examination of various contemporary sources such as personal journals, letters, Government Intelligence Reports, Episcopal letters, Diocesan Archives and Newspapers.

Abstract:
The 1916 Easter Rising, an unsuccessful insurrection which resulted in the Irish War of Independence, generated a deep change in the political landscape in Ireland. The purpose of this work is to describe this crucial period in the history of Ireland through the voices of Irish writers who expressed their ideas and feelings about the way Ireland was close to gaining its independence. Thanks to songs, poems and literature, I analysed the events of that period through the eyes of the Irish people. Authors like Roddy Doyle and William Butler Yeats were fundamental in examining this topic very thoroughly. Through their works, they were able to convey their knowledge about the events of those years and, at the same time, to give their own opinion, as Irish people, on the topic.

Abstract:
The study focuses on « memory names » « Easter Rising » and « Bloody Sunday » and on onomastic fields buildt around them in Anglo-Irish contemporary fiction. This researсh is conducted at the crossroads of history, linguistics and literary analysis. It aims to show the functions they can fill in Irish literary discourse through an analysis of the contexts surrounding the « memory names » and the ways they are expressed. The cultural and symbolical values that they convey, the mecanisms of development of a memory name, as well as the interrelation between an historical event, its representation and (or) the discours about the event and its actors are examined in detail. The study focuses in particular on discursive and non-verbal ideological frames conveyed by the « memory names », and on the means that a writer uses to deconstruct these frames or to move outside the framework

Ireland’s particular national culture has shaped an imaginary conception of identity which has also affected the image of women. Irish drama has contributed significantly to the debate on and revisionism of Irish identity and, in the twentieth century, the Easter Rising in 1916 was chosen by some Irish playwrights as a background to promote reflection on this question. Sean O’Casey and Tom Murphy presented versions of the Easter Rising on the Abbey stage which approached the identity of Irish women in a nationalistic context. A comparison of these two dramatic texts reveals that, although the playwrights used different strategies, they both reassessed the female image promoted by Irish nationalism.

Abstract:
A Star Called Henry (1999), do escritor irlandês Roddy Doyle (1958-), é o primeiro livro da trilogia The Last Roundup, cujo protagonista é Henry Smart.
A Star Called Henry (1999), by the Irish writer Roddy Doyle (1958), is the first book of the trilogy The Last Roundup, whose protagonist is Henry Smart. He is born in Dublin at the beginning of the twentieth century and he plays an important role in the fight for Irelands independence. Along with the Irish Volunteers, Smart fights in the 1916 Easter Rising, helps to write the proclamation of independence and becomes a soldier of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in the War of Independence (1919-1921). Henry is a hero, but not the classic kind: the son of a hired killer and a poor teenager, Smart is a thief since his early years and, when he fights for Ireland, he is not interested in the nationalist ideal, since he fights for money, food and recognition. Living at the margins of society, Henry Smart deconstructs the romantic aura around the Rising, the War of Independence and the nationalist heroes. The starting point of this research is to investigate the authors impulse to write a historical novel in times of financial prosperity, since Doyle publishes the book during the Celtic Tiger era (1994-2008). We also aim to understand why the author decides to represent Dublin and the nationalist heroes in a way that contrasts with the nationalist symbolism. We understand that the context of publication influences the artistic production, and, therefore, when choosing the historical theme, Doyle criticizes both the early twentieth-century nationalism and the Celtic Tiger society. The author intertwines temporalities in order to expose the gaps and inconsistencies of the past and the present.

Abstract:
Women have been part of modern revolutions since the American Revolution against Great Britain. Most descriptions and analyses of revolution relegate women to a supporting role, or make no mention of women's involvement at all. This work differs from prior efforts in that it will explore one possible explanation for the successes of three revolutions based upon the levels of women's support for those revolutions. An analysis of the three cases (Ireland, Russia, and Nicaragua) suggests a series of hypotheses about women's participation in revolution and its importance to revolutions' success.

Abstract:
Many political scientists expect the advent of rising states to bring about shifts in the international distribution of power, on the one hand, and competitive policies to improve one state’s power relative to a targeted state or coalition, known as “balancing,” on the other. Focusing on China’s rise in East Asia in 1993–2016, this dissertation challenges both these assumptions and offers a reassessment of the links between rising states, power shifts, and balancing in international relations. First, I demonstrate that the gap between the United States and China in exercising control over the security and alignment policies of secondary states has become wider, not narrower. Second, to explain this, I present two new mechanisms that reduce shifts in power from established to rising powers: the power effects of expertise and the anti-power effects of status seeking. Third, I show that there has been much less balancing from both China and Japan than is commonly assumed. Fourth, under certain conditions—dominant moderate policy discursive positions and status seeking with the objective of peer-recognition—I have demonstrated that enmity is able to coexist with policies of non-balancing and even accommodation. Finally, by revealing tacit but fundamental differences in the purposes for which scholars employ the balancing concept, I reconcile some of the disagreements about whether balancing is taking place in the wake of China’s rise.

Framförallt i mängden våld somnyttjades.
Background Since the early twentieth century Britain has been active in many COIN operations. Theirexperiences have contributed to UK counts as a qualified COIN nation. The investigation is about1916-1922 Ireland, and how Britain acted in relation to the current UK COIN doctrine. Purpose The essay should clarify, based on current British doctrine, which differences and mistakes GreatBritain committed during the early twentieth century in Ireland in contrast to the present COINdoctrine. Method The study is theory-consuming and divides the theory in variables: goals, means and method. These are compared against analytical unit consisting of three eras from the Anglo-Irish War. Conclusions The survey reveals that Britain's actions in Ireland in the early twentieth century was verydifferent from what the current doctrine advocates. In particular, the amount of violence whichwere used.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the political, economic, energy and military determinants of Chinas use of force policy in South and East China Seas in the post-Cold War era. Considering Chinas international behavior throughout the Cold War years, three possible explanations are formulated at the beginning of the study. The first one posits that China has not changed its realist international attitude after the Cold War and its conciliatory behaviors are only exceptional for other reasons. The second postulates that China has displayed behavior different from its earlier approaches to the regional disputes since 1990s. The third suggests that China has not behaved consistently and it is not possible to determine any single pattern. Since the end of the Cold War, deepening political and economic integration and increasing investment in alternative energy resources discouraged Chinese decision-makers from resorting to the military forces at first place to settle the disputes and forced Beijing to adopt more cooperative strategies. However, regarding the regional militarization, it is difficult to determine the effects of military balance on the Chinese international crisis behaviors. After evaluating the determinants and Chinas dispute behavior together last two decades, this thesis concludes that the threshold of the Chinese use of force in South and East China Seas has elevated and Beijing has not behaved so belligerently since 1990s as it did during the Cold War years.

Abstract:
Even after 10 years, countries under transition are still on their way to becoming developed, internationally competitive countries. At this stage it is helpful for business cooperation to know whether managers in countries undergoing transition are behaving like socialists or Western managers, or somewhere in between. Many joint ventures and other alliances between Western companies and companies in countries in transition are seeking to establish new markets with new products or new technologies (i.e., new processes). They are risky because the returns are uncertain. Understanding the risk attitudes of managers in countries in transition can explain different investment behavior and provide vital information for installing the right incentives. This study compares the risk attitudes of Chinese, eastern, and western German managers. Chinese managers'' risk attitudes seem to be more similar to the attitudes of western German managers than to those of their counterparts in eastern Germany.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the "Arab policy" of Turkey under the rule of the Justice and Development Party (JDP). While for most of the 20th century Turkey was disengaged from the Middle East, the beginning of the 21st century witnessed a growing involvement of Ankara in its Arab regional environment. Thus, this thesis analyzes the shift that took place in Turkey's foreign policy and diplomacy towards the Middle East. The main argument is that Turkey’s embrace of its Middle Eastern environment is linked to the phenomenon of “rising powers”: being a rising middle power in quest for status, Turkey has found in the Middle East a field maneuver necessary for its assertion on the international stage. The thesis examines the tools and methods used by Turkey to emerge as a regional power in its Middle Eastern hinterland, in particular: the use of a new civilizational discourse by the ruling elite, the recourse to "niche diplomacy" such as mediation and peace diplomacy, the use of soft power to win hearts and minds, and the attempts to solve the Kurdish question. However, it shows that despite the "innovative" character of these instruments, the status of Turkey in the Middle East remains fragile: on the one hand, the instability that characterizes the region jeopardizes the achievements and interests of Ankara; on the other hand, Turkey suffers from an "overachievement" or a gap between its ambitions and its power capabilities and real resources. More generally, Turkey’s quest for status is undermined by the structure of the international system: the "oligarchic" nature of the latter prevents the integration of middle powers and limits their capacity to play an effective role in global governance

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Coming together at Easter: Commemorating the 1916 Rising in Ireland, 1916-1966 Antoine Guillemette, Ph.D. Concordia University, 2013 This dissertation explores how the Easter Rising was commemorated between 1916 and 1966 in the 26 southern counties which were granted independence following the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty. What follows surveys the various impacts that collective memories of Easter Week had on the modern development of Ireland, discussed through six chapters. The unfolding narrative reviews the acts of commemorative defiance devised during the final years of the British Empire, leads us to the various uses of public space through processions, parades, gatherings and erections of memorials in the first decades of independence, and examines commemorations in provincial Ireland and within Irish-speaking communities in a post-Second World War Ireland. The concluding chapter assesses how these dynamics re-emerged in one way or another during the expansive 1966 golden jubilee. Altogether, the ensuing story highlights the multivocal nature of 1916 commemorations which, for better or worse, persistently played a part in the formations and expressions of Irish identity up to 1966.

Ward, Thomas Barrett. "The Easter Rising : Pearse, print, and the modern Irish elegy." 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/22784.

Full text
Abstract:
The 1916 Easter Rising was the watershed political moment of the modern Irish Nation. Padraig Pearse, along with his co-conspirators, initiated an event that dramatically affected the Celtic Revival literary movement. Prior to the rebellion, Pearse left a calculated literary legacy through pamphlets, broadsides, and poems. His most notable contribution to print nationalism was the text of The Easter Proclamation, but the poems he wrote prior to his execution are important contributions to the modern Irish elegiac tradition. Poets took to their work with renewed political fervor and used elegiac forms to mourn the dead and subvert the rhetoric of imperialism. This study focuses on the modern Irish elegy, but also records the creation and reception of Pearse’s documents and actions. Beginning with his political pamphlets, speeches, and poetry, this paper examines how Pearse’s legacy in print impacted the elegiac tradition in Ireland. While it would be impossible to examine every elegy directly influenced by the Easter Rising in this short paper, it is useful to examine disparate elegiac viewpoints on this historical event. Initially tracing the historical production of The Easter Proclamation and Pearse’s series of separatist pamphlets, this exploration shifts to Pearse’s self-elegies and the elegies written by his acquaintances and contemporaries. Yeats is the obvious starting point for Republican elegies, but I will also explore the shifting poetics and elegiac tropes present in the poems of AE (George Russell), and Francis Ledwidge. This paper does not seek to ignore or discredit the print legacy of the other leaders of the Rising (notably Connolly, MacDonagh, and Markiewicz), but focuses on Pearse because of his print legacy and political importance.

Abstract:
The Proclaiming a Republic: The 1916 Rising (2016-2020) exhibition was opened by the National Museum of Ireland as a part of the Decade of Centenaries project to commemorate the Easter Rising. This thesis understands the exhibition as a place of memory, which on the occasion of the centenary represents the official memory of the rising, and it aims to analyze this memory. The exhibition is perceived through the SANE framework as a mnemonic formation and the emphasis is put on narrative of the exhibition. Analysis of which is based on presumptions of the new museology, according to which modern museums utilize either hegemonic (celebratory, status quo-maintaining) or counter-hegemonic (minority, status quo-denying) narratives. The content of the exhibition (texts, exhibits, photographs), which was documented by the author of this thesis during repeated visits in 2017 and 2018, is subjected to thematic analysis. By applying the thematic network method, nine so-called global themes - macro-themes depicting who / what, how and by what is the exhibition commemorating - are identified within the narrative of the exhibition. The thesis determines that the exhibition, despite expectations of the new museology, reinforces traditional myths of the Easter Rising and employs predominantly dominant narratives....

Abstract:
This thesis is a critical history about Cranbrook BC, the town where I grew up. It explores a historical origin story that historians have called the ‘Kootenai Uprising,’ as well as the annual regional holiday that commemorates that event - Sam Steele Days. By unpacking the symbols utilized in remembering history, applying new historical evidence towards the long accepted narrative and collaborating with Ktunaxa Nation, this thesis attempts to set the historical record straight, include Ktunaxa perspectives in the regional historical narrative and critically examine the practice of mythology in settler society as a way to both remember and forget the past.

China’s rise, especially in military arena, has become a huge as well uncertain factor for regional and global strategic architecture. In the region of East Asia, the traditional security structure anchored by US-Japan alliance has also experienced new pressure by China’s fast-pace economic growth and military modernization. The future of regional security, and global peace at large, will be fundamentally reshaped by the perceptions evaluations and interactions as responses to each other’s strategic moves trilaterally. This dissertation will explore these perceptions and responses from 1990 to 2009 to provide a preliminary perspective on the relations between the three major players. This paper employs an analytical framework combining geopolitics and offensive realism to evaluate the mutual perceptions and strategic responses of China, the US and Japan. Based on empirical data collected, it found that while the military rise of China did expand its project capabilities, China still fell short of challenging the credibility of the US-Japanese security architecture as a whole. However, in preparation for the further expansion of China’s sphere of influence, both the US and Japan embraced a strategy of “congagement” to keep China checked. As a response, a trend of arms race in East Asia is becoming steadily growing.

The fields of totalitarian regime’s rising have been the subjects that many scholars interested in. Hannah Arendt called totalitarian politics was a newly risen phenomenon in the 20th century because of its specialty in human civilization. In this thesis, the author attempt to observe that from the perspective of David Easton’s political system, by the concept of “System Persisting” and “System Self-Transformation”, also by analyzing the interaction between environment change, policy output from political authority, and reaction of political members in Germany from 1924 to 1936, to explain the rising of totalitarian regime. The thesis mainly contains three stages of Germany between 1924 and 1936, including (1) The period of stability(1924-1929):In this stage, the political system of Germany was remained stable under government of Weimar Republic. The people’s livelihood needs were fulfilled; also the support from the people could keep the regime operating well. (2) The period of transformation(1929-1933):Due to the broke out of Great Depression, the political system of Germany went through a very difficult time during this period, which result in that the system was prompted to proceed a process of “Self-Transformation”. However, under the circumstance that Weimar Republic kept failing to deal with increasing pressure from environment, the people felt less and less supportive toward the government, also more and more unfulfilled with their livelihood needs. In order to survive under such a rugged time, the process of “Self-Transformation” was forced to become more violent, which eventually would bring about a new authority and regime—the totalitarian regime. (3) The period of restability(1933-1936):Owing to the coercion policy output of newly risen totalitarian regime, the political system of Germany was restored to stable situation again, whether in politics or in economy. Also by achieving full employment in 1936, Germany officially ended the chaos which had been lasting since the breakout of Great Depression.

Siringan, Fernando Pascual. "Coastal lithosome evolution and preservation during an overall rising sea level: East Texas gulf coast and continental shelf." Thesis, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/1911/16669.

Full text
Abstract:
Present coastal systems along the east Texas coast evolved during the past 3.5 ky of relative sea-level stillstand following a rapid sea-level rise 4 ka. Closure of proto-Galveston Bay, caused by spit accretion of Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula, formed Bolivar Roads approximately 3.3 ka. Increased tidal prism and entrenchment over the Trinity River incised valley led to inlet stabilization and intensification of tidal influence. The present shoreface and inner shelf package is characterized by a paucity of storm deposits. Strong along-shelf storm currents, low sediment supply, and low effective accommodation space in the region are unfavorable for the preservation of storm beds. Higher sand supply during the early establishment of the present coastal lithosomes resulted in a greater occurrence of storm beds lower in the section. Amalgamated storm deposits on the east Texas shelf are associated with reworked coastal lithosomes. Pods of tidal-inlet, tidal-inlet/spit, and tidal-delta deposits mark previous shoreline positions on the continental shelf. Their distribution mimics the along-strike variation of the present coastal systems, defines six relative sea-level stillstands, including the present, during the past 10.2 ky, and supports the model of a step-like sea-level rise. The seismic architecture of pre-8 ka coastal lithosomes provide evidence for greater tidal influence, greater accommodation space, and higher sedimentation rates compared to the present. The preserved coastal lithosomes indicate that the depth of shoreface ravinement decreases with decreasing shelf gradient, increasing rates of sea-level rise, and increasing sediment supply. Better preservation within incised valleys results from greater accommodation space and the soft valley-fill that allows incision of the inlets beyond the depth of shoreface ravinement. The mechanism of shoreline translation (discontinuous erosional shoreface retreat, transgressive submergence, or in-place drowning), is a function mainly of shelf gradient and rate of sea-level rise. Gentle shelf gradient and rapid sea-level rise favor transgressive submergence. In regions with steep shelf gradient, aggradation may produce stratigraphic signatures consistent with in-place drowning and discontinuous erosional shoreface retreat.

This paper mainly focuses on the so-called “Shanghai/Chinese Neo Sensation School” which has been supposed and established in Modern Chinese literature history as a typical genre of aestheticism and formalism inclined literary group deeply influenced by late-19th century western artistic trend. However, instead of regarding “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” as solely western-influenced aesthetic literature, this paper explores the multi modernities which “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” had by their relationship with Japanese Neo Sensation School and from early-20th east-Asiatic “Newly Rising Literature” angle. In other words, the target of this paper is to discover the complexity of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” by means of a historical research way, trying to re-examine the literary complicacy of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” in 1920s-1930s east-Asiatic culture, politics and historic context. The concept “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” had been firmed as an aesthetic- modernism group opposed to proletarian realism literature since mainland China 1980’s scholarships’ “rewriting modern Chinese literary history” trend. Although the canonization has made “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” got scholarly attention, it let “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” be considered as a pure aesthetic and nonsocial school which only laid special emphasis on writing skill, internal experience and urban life of sensual pleasure. Under the point of view, not only the complex content of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” has been ignored, but the relation between Shanghai and Japanese Neo Sensation Schools has been lacked subtle and comprehensive survey. Accordingly, the motive of this paper is to explore a little further into the literary practices of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” historically, trying to sophisticate their significance from modern east-Asiatic social and cultural circumstances. In fact, “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” was an informal group of young writers gathered by similar literary interests; their literary works respond to each other and presented as relating to early 20th century Japanese “Newly Rising Literature”. “Newly Rising Literature” referred to a series of newly literary practices which arose after 1923 Kantō earthquake Japan – with the rapid development of post-earthquake rebuilding, modernization, globalization and pursuit of scientism, “Newly Rising Literature” widely included western Europe avant-garde, Russian Communist art, Marxism theories, proletarian literature, urban mass culture and so forth which were seen as corresponding to worldly tendency to various “modernities” at that time. To some extent, Japanese Neo Sensation School can be regarded as a sort of “Newly Rising Literature”, it also had frequent interaction with other species of “Newly Rising Literature”. Just like Japanese Neo Sensation School came into being at post-earthquake transformed Tokyo society, “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” likewise had close connection with 1920s-1930s “modern Shanghai” environment, and its literary practices touched the multi modernities of early 20th century Japanese “Newly Rising Literature” phenomena and issues as well. It is from the above assumption that make this paper set Tokyo/Shanghai as two compared cultural geographic space for analytic framework. Firstly, the primary section of this paper deals with the relation of Japanese Neo Sensation School’s birth and 1920’s Japan post-earthquake culture transformed surrounding. Therefore, in this section, I center on elaborating Japanese Neo Sensation School’s theories about literature, trying to illustrate their literary purpose of scientism by relating to Japan’s Taishō to Shōwa “intellectualism” current of thought, knowledge and the whole society background. After that, the main part of this paper takes aesthetic avant-garde, left practice on proletarian literature and urban mass culture writing as three cross-cultural representative characters of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School”s practice on multi modernities with Japanese New Sensation School. Compared to Japanese New Sensation School’s core lays on scientism responding to Japan’s early 20th century intellectualism atmosphere, this paper finds out that “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” presented themselves the dialectical issue between artistic/social avant-garde was their substantial concern. For instance, no matter applying Marxism art theories to their experimental urban writing, putting the problem of urban/rural conflict to their urban topic fictions, or presenting narrative innovation in civic creative pieces, “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” showed their writing were neither copy of Japanese New Sensation School nor formalism practices transplant from western aestheticism, but in fact an involution of various modernities according to Chinese language, narrative tradition, political condition and cultural situation. Overall, this paper tries to clarify the exact relationship between Shanghai/Japanese Neo Sensation Schools by putting them in 1920s-1930s China-Japan historic context and Tokyo/Shanghai comparative cultural fields and metropolitan space. By this methodology, Shanghai/Japanese Neo Sensation Schools will no longer be seen restrictedly as western-imitating aesthetic genre; on the contrary, their “modernism” practices will be elucidated concerned with east-Asiatic cultural surrounding and China/Japan modern history and thus demonstrate their literary “modernism” as full of Asiatic local characteristic which is worthy of being re-evaluated in Chinese modern history.
