Full textThe study focuses on « memory names » « Easter Rising » and « Bloody Sunday » and on onomastic fields buildt around them in Anglo-Irish contemporary fiction. This researсh is conducted at the crossroads of history, linguistics and literary analysis. It aims to show the functions they can fill in Irish literary discourse through an analysis of the contexts surrounding the « memory names » and the ways they are expressed. The cultural and symbolical values that they convey, the mecanisms of development of a memory name, as well as the interrelation between an historical event, its representation and (or) the discours about the event and its actors are examined in detail. The study focuses in particular on discursive and non-verbal ideological frames conveyed by the « memory names », and on the means that a writer uses to deconstruct these frames or to move outside the framework

Ireland’s particular national culture has shaped an imaginary conception of identity which has also affected the image of women. Irish drama has contributed significantly to the debate on and revisionism of Irish identity and, in the twentieth century, the Easter Rising in 1916 was chosen by some Irish playwrights as a background to promote reflection on this question. Sean O’Casey and Tom Murphy presented versions of the Easter Rising on the Abbey stage which approached the identity of Irish women in a nationalistic context. A comparison of these two dramatic texts reveals that, although the playwrights used different strategies, they both reassessed the female image promoted by Irish nationalism.

Full textA Star Called Henry (1999), by the Irish writer Roddy Doyle (1958), is the first book of the trilogy The Last Roundup, whose protagonist is Henry Smart. He is born in Dublin at the beginning of the twentieth century and he plays an important role in the fight for Irelands independence. Along with the Irish Volunteers, Smart fights in the 1916 Easter Rising, helps to write the proclamation of independence and becomes a soldier of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in the War of Independence (1919-1921). Henry is a hero, but not the classic kind: the son of a hired killer and a poor teenager, Smart is a thief since his early years and, when he fights for Ireland, he is not interested in the nationalist ideal, since he fights for money, food and recognition. Living at the margins of society, Henry Smart deconstructs the romantic aura around the Rising, the War of Independence and the nationalist heroes. The starting point of this research is to investigate the authors impulse to write a historical novel in times of financial prosperity, since Doyle publishes the book during the Celtic Tiger era (1994-2008). We also aim to understand why the author decides to represent Dublin and the nationalist heroes in a way that contrasts with the nationalist symbolism. We understand that the context of publication influences the artistic production, and, therefore, when choosing the historical theme, Doyle criticizes both the early twentieth-century nationalism and the Celtic Tiger society. The author intertwines temporalities in order to expose the gaps and inconsistencies of the past and the present.

Full textThis thesis examines the "Arab policy" of Turkey under the rule of the Justice and Development Party (JDP). While for most of the 20th century Turkey was disengaged from the Middle East, the beginning of the 21st century witnessed a growing involvement of Ankara in its Arab regional environment. Thus, this thesis analyzes the shift that took place in Turkey's foreign policy and diplomacy towards the Middle East. The main argument is that Turkey’s embrace of its Middle Eastern environment is linked to the phenomenon of “rising powers”: being a rising middle power in quest for status, Turkey has found in the Middle East a field maneuver necessary for its assertion on the international stage. The thesis examines the tools and methods used by Turkey to emerge as a regional power in its Middle Eastern hinterland, in particular: the use of a new civilizational discourse by the ruling elite, the recourse to "niche diplomacy" such as mediation and peace diplomacy, the use of soft power to win hearts and minds, and the attempts to solve the Kurdish question. However, it shows that despite the "innovative" character of these instruments, the status of Turkey in the Middle East remains fragile: on the one hand, the instability that characterizes the region jeopardizes the achievements and interests of Ankara; on the other hand, Turkey suffers from an "overachievement" or a gap between its ambitions and its power capabilities and real resources. More generally, Turkey’s quest for status is undermined by the structure of the international system: the "oligarchic" nature of the latter prevents the integration of middle powers and limits their capacity to play an effective role in global governance

China’s rise, especially in military arena, has become a huge as well uncertain factor for regional and global strategic architecture. In the region of East Asia, the traditional security structure anchored by US-Japan alliance has also experienced new pressure by China’s fast-pace economic growth and military modernization. The future of regional security, and global peace at large, will be fundamentally reshaped by the perceptions evaluations and interactions as responses to each other’s strategic moves trilaterally. This dissertation will explore these perceptions and responses from 1990 to 2009 to provide a preliminary perspective on the relations between the three major players. This paper employs an analytical framework combining geopolitics and offensive realism to evaluate the mutual perceptions and strategic responses of China, the US and Japan. Based on empirical data collected, it found that while the military rise of China did expand its project capabilities, China still fell short of challenging the credibility of the US-Japanese security architecture as a whole. However, in preparation for the further expansion of China’s sphere of influence, both the US and Japan embraced a strategy of “congagement” to keep China checked. As a response, a trend of arms race in East Asia is becoming steadily growing.

The fields of totalitarian regime’s rising have been the subjects that many scholars interested in. Hannah Arendt called totalitarian politics was a newly risen phenomenon in the 20th century because of its specialty in human civilization. In this thesis, the author attempt to observe that from the perspective of David Easton’s political system, by the concept of “System Persisting” and “System Self-Transformation”, also by analyzing the interaction between environment change, policy output from political authority, and reaction of political members in Germany from 1924 to 1936, to explain the rising of totalitarian regime. The thesis mainly contains three stages of Germany between 1924 and 1936, including (1) The period of stability(1924-1929):In this stage, the political system of Germany was remained stable under government of Weimar Republic. The people’s livelihood needs were fulfilled; also the support from the people could keep the regime operating well. (2) The period of transformation(1929-1933):Due to the broke out of Great Depression, the political system of Germany went through a very difficult time during this period, which result in that the system was prompted to proceed a process of “Self-Transformation”. However, under the circumstance that Weimar Republic kept failing to deal with increasing pressure from environment, the people felt less and less supportive toward the government, also more and more unfulfilled with their livelihood needs. In order to survive under such a rugged time, the process of “Self-Transformation” was forced to become more violent, which eventually would bring about a new authority and regime—the totalitarian regime. (3) The period of restability(1933-1936):Owing to the coercion policy output of newly risen totalitarian regime, the political system of Germany was restored to stable situation again, whether in politics or in economy. Also by achieving full employment in 1936, Germany officially ended the chaos which had been lasting since the breakout of Great Depression.

This paper mainly focuses on the so-called “Shanghai/Chinese Neo Sensation School” which has been supposed and established in Modern Chinese literature history as a typical genre of aestheticism and formalism inclined literary group deeply influenced by late-19th century western artistic trend. However, instead of regarding “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” as solely western-influenced aesthetic literature, this paper explores the multi modernities which “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” had by their relationship with Japanese Neo Sensation School and from early-20th east-Asiatic “Newly Rising Literature” angle. In other words, the target of this paper is to discover the complexity of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” by means of a historical research way, trying to re-examine the literary complicacy of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” in 1920s-1930s east-Asiatic culture, politics and historic context. The concept “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” had been firmed as an aesthetic- modernism group opposed to proletarian realism literature since mainland China 1980’s scholarships’ “rewriting modern Chinese literary history” trend. Although the canonization has made “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” got scholarly attention, it let “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” be considered as a pure aesthetic and nonsocial school which only laid special emphasis on writing skill, internal experience and urban life of sensual pleasure. Under the point of view, not only the complex content of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” has been ignored, but the relation between Shanghai and Japanese Neo Sensation Schools has been lacked subtle and comprehensive survey. Accordingly, the motive of this paper is to explore a little further into the literary practices of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” historically, trying to sophisticate their significance from modern east-Asiatic social and cultural circumstances. In fact, “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” was an informal group of young writers gathered by similar literary interests; their literary works respond to each other and presented as relating to early 20th century Japanese “Newly Rising Literature”. “Newly Rising Literature” referred to a series of newly literary practices which arose after 1923 Kantō earthquake Japan – with the rapid development of post-earthquake rebuilding, modernization, globalization and pursuit of scientism, “Newly Rising Literature” widely included western Europe avant-garde, Russian Communist art, Marxism theories, proletarian literature, urban mass culture and so forth which were seen as corresponding to worldly tendency to various “modernities” at that time. To some extent, Japanese Neo Sensation School can be regarded as a sort of “Newly Rising Literature”, it also had frequent interaction with other species of “Newly Rising Literature”. Just like Japanese Neo Sensation School came into being at post-earthquake transformed Tokyo society, “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” likewise had close connection with 1920s-1930s “modern Shanghai” environment, and its literary practices touched the multi modernities of early 20th century Japanese “Newly Rising Literature” phenomena and issues as well. It is from the above assumption that make this paper set Tokyo/Shanghai as two compared cultural geographic space for analytic framework. Firstly, the primary section of this paper deals with the relation of Japanese Neo Sensation School’s birth and 1920’s Japan post-earthquake culture transformed surrounding. Therefore, in this section, I center on elaborating Japanese Neo Sensation School’s theories about literature, trying to illustrate their literary purpose of scientism by relating to Japan’s Taishō to Shōwa “intellectualism” current of thought, knowledge and the whole society background. After that, the main part of this paper takes aesthetic avant-garde, left practice on proletarian literature and urban mass culture writing as three cross-cultural representative characters of “Shanghai Neo Sensation School”s practice on multi modernities with Japanese New Sensation School. Compared to Japanese New Sensation School’s core lays on scientism responding to Japan’s early 20th century intellectualism atmosphere, this paper finds out that “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” presented themselves the dialectical issue between artistic/social avant-garde was their substantial concern. For instance, no matter applying Marxism art theories to their experimental urban writing, putting the problem of urban/rural conflict to their urban topic fictions, or presenting narrative innovation in civic creative pieces, “Shanghai Neo Sensation School” showed their writing were neither copy of Japanese New Sensation School nor formalism practices transplant from western aestheticism, but in fact an involution of various modernities according to Chinese language, narrative tradition, political condition and cultural situation. Overall, this paper tries to clarify the exact relationship between Shanghai/Japanese Neo Sensation Schools by putting them in 1920s-1930s China-Japan historic context and Tokyo/Shanghai comparative cultural fields and metropolitan space. By this methodology, Shanghai/Japanese Neo Sensation Schools will no longer be seen restrictedly as western-imitating aesthetic genre; on the contrary, their “modernism” practices will be elucidated concerned with east-Asiatic cultural surrounding and China/Japan modern history and thus demonstrate their literary “modernism” as full of Asiatic local characteristic which is worthy of being re-evaluated in Chinese modern history.
