Abstract:
This chapter presents the complex and diverse nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on a global scale, as well as a global epidemiology of HIV. The hardest-hit region of the world is sub-Saharan Africa, where heterosexual transmission dominates. Here the overall rate of new HIV infections has decreased in 25 countries by 50% between 2001 and 2011, coupled with scale-up of antiretroviral therapy and prevention of mother-to-child transmission. The Asia-Pacific region has the second highest burden of HIV in the world and, despite a decline in the annual number of new infections, is also seeing increasi

Abstract:
Three recent accidents involving the release of hazardous material have focused attention on the structural integrity of railroad tank cars: (1) Minot, ND, on January 18, 2002; (2) Macdona, TX, on June 28, 2004; and (3) Graniteville, SC, on January 6, 2005. Each of these accidents resulted in fatalities. Research is being conducted to develop strategies for improving railroad tank cars so they can maintain tank integrity in severe accidents. A collaborative effort called the Next Generation Rail Tank Car (NGRTC) Project intends to use these research results to help develop improved tank car de

In July 2008, Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. (EMD) began discussions to jointly investigate the potential for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on a small group of re-powered UP locomotives, to assess the potential for EGR as a technology to meet the oxides of nitrogen (NOx) requirement in US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 locomotive emissions regulations on newly-manufactured future diesel locomotives effective January 1, 2015 [1]. After several years of research, engineering and experimental testing, EMD began delivering to UP in late-2011 nine SD59MX

Abstract:
Over the past two years, a series of papers have been published concerning bearing temperature trending and a mechanism to explain this troubling phenomenon. In September of 2008, a collaborative field test between The Union Pacific Railroad (UP), Amsted Rail, Rail Sciences Inc. (RSI), and The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) was conducted to corroborate the findings of laboratory research and testing. Field and laboratory results confirm that temperature trended bearings exhibit vibration signals that can be distinguished from healthy bearings. Distinct primary frequencies and overtone

Abstract:
The network constraints of freight railroad traffic are moving the industry to heavier tonnage trains, higher axle loads and increased velocity. The dynamics of heavier axle loads and speed produce high stresses in the track infrastructure. Track integrity is strongly related to the vertical track modulus — the relationship between the rail deflection and the vertical applied load. Both low track modulus and large variations in track modulus increase dynamic loading leading to increased maintenance requirements and reduced structural integrity. Currently, there is no widely accepted method to

Abstract:
This paper describes the test results of a program to apply an experimental diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) to a 2,850 kW freight locomotive. Locomotive emissions and fuel consumption measurements were performed on an Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) model SD60M locomotive, owned by Union Pacific Railroad company, that had been recently rebuilt to EPA Tier 0 exhaust emission certification levels. Emission testing was performed at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) Locomotive Exhaust Emissions Test Center in San Antonio, Texas.
