This thesis proposes that a genuine European identity may emerge in the eastern borderlands of the European Union. This perspective is based on two lines of thought: first, with the increasing challenges the European Union is currently facing, such as demands for regionalisation and EU enlargement towards the East, the progressive development of the European integration process can no longer rely on its citizens' permissive consensus, but is in need of a genuine 'European identity'; second, clues to a genuine European identity may be found in the Eastern borderlands of the Europe

The member countries of the enlarged European Union show large differences in the structure of their tax systems. While consumption taxes have been largely harmonized over the past decades, differences remain in taxes on factor incomes, in particular on capital income. Also, effective tax rates on capital income in Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) have been falling substantially over the last decade- a trend that may suggest that some tax competition has taken place in the enlarged European Union. Firstly, we employ a variety of approaches to test whether economies actually reach a steady state as a consequence of catching-up and we argue that, if this condition is not satisfied, con

That tendency has also been linked to adoptive parents' attitudes about the birth culture, and speculation that most parents are assimilating their children to the dominant culture.
