Full text
Abstract:
Access to the scientific literature is perceived to be a challenge to the biodiversity conservation community, but actual level of literature access relative to needs has never been assessed globally. We examined this question by surveying the constituency of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a proxy for the conservation community, generating 2,285 responses. Of these respondents, ∼97% need to use the scientific literature in order to support their IUCN-related conservation work, with ∼50% needing to do so at least once per week. The crux of the survey revolved around the question, “How easy is it for you currently to obtain the scientific literature you need to carry out your IUCN-related work?” and revealed that roughly half (49%) of the respondents find it not easy or not at all easy to access scientific literature. We fitted a binary logistic regression model to explore factors predicting ease of literature access. Whether the respondent had institutional literature access (55% do) is the strongest predictor, with region (Western Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) and sex (male) also significant predictors. Approximately 60% of respondents from Western Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have institutional access compared to ∼50% in Asia and Latin America, and ∼40% in Eastern Europe and in Africa. Nevertheless, accessing free online material is a popular means of accessing literature for both those with and without institutional access. The four journals most frequently mentioned when asked which journal access would deliver the greatest improvements to the respondent’s IUCN-related work were Conservation Biology, Biological Conservation, Nature, and Science. The majority prefer to read journal articles on screen but books in hard copy. Overall, it is apparent that access to the literature is a challenge facing roughly half of the conservation community worldwide.

Abstract:
‘Statius’Thebaid’, someone donnishly quipped, ‘has no sufficient reason to exist.’ Kyle Gervais might beg to differ. Like theThebaiditself, his commentary on Book 2 has grown over many years, and deserves to be taken very seriously. The crisp introduction sets the tone and clearly signals priorities in its four sections, a rising tetracolon for author, problems of editing, intratexts, and intertexts; not a word on style and prosody, and reception is excluded on the ground that Statius’ ownimitatiois quite enough to be getting on with. The text is newly constituted, with ample apparatus and text-critical discussion: Gervais joins Barrie Hall's rebellion against the bifid stemma, but fairly questions his view that theThebaidshould be easy reading; he accordingly diverges from his edition nearly a hundred times, and offers a translation which, if less old-falutin’ than Shack's Loeb, does an equally good job of disabusing anyone who thought it would be quicker to read Statius in English. The notes are full and rich: words aren't wasted, but both philological graft and literary interpretation amply attest to fine scholarship, good sense, and long thought.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to provide a critical assessment of existing links between risk management systems (RMS) and performance management systems (PMS) through a general review of the literature. Design/methodology/approach – The research approach consists of a literature review, aimed at highlighting the “points of contact” between RMS and PMS along three main dimensions: scope of the system, measurement and ownership. Findings – Key papers and books published in the field are examined. Based on this review, an assessment of similarities and potential synergies between RMS and PMS is offered. In addition, possible avenues for future research are discussed. Practical implications – The paper provides managers with useful insights on pros and cons of integrating RMS and PMS. It highlights possible instruments and organizational arrangements that could be exploited by practitioners to connect the two systems and discusses the implications of different possible configurations. Originality/value – Whilst the professional literature is loaded with illustrations of RMS and PMS as “integrated” solutions, this issue has been only partially addressed by the academic literature that generally focuses on one of the two systems. Hence, the study overall contributes to enrich the knowledge of the relationship between performance and risk management by mapping how and where the two systems are linked.

Abstract Motivation Protein–protein interactions (PPIs) are very important to build models for understanding many biological processes. Although several databases hold many of these interactions, exploring them, selecting those relevant for a given subject and contextualizing them can be a difficult task for researchers. Extracting PPIs directly from the scientific literature can be very helpful for providing such context, as the sentences describing these interactions may give insights to researchers in helpful ways. Results We have developed PPaxe, a python module and a web application that allows users to extract PPIs and protein occurrence from a given set of PubMed and PubMedCentral articles. It presents the results of the analysis in different ways to help researchers export, filter and analyze the results easily. Availability and implementation PPaxe web demo is freely available at https://compgen.bio.ub.edu/PPaxe. Abstract:
Literature has stood the test of time, though there were many changes in its form. It truly reflects, as a mirror, the happenings of the society. Literature in the twenty first century has a deep and far-reaching root in the social networks, impacts of environment studies in literature, and so on. It is influenced by the perspectives of how scholars engage and study literature in the present age. The twenty first century literature can collectively be classified under three types of literary writings, namely, informative literature, environmental literature and digital literature. The latest trend of the twenty first century is the study of literature through the digital platform, introduced during the postmodern era. This literature is created to promote the exchange of ideas and to increase easy access of literary works through e-books, blogs, webpages, including audio and graphics. The benefits of digital literature are easy accessibility and the digital contents are engaging and inspiring because of their interactivity. Moreover, online text and webpages are never out of stock. Key Words: Literature, digitisation, interactivity, society, demand.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper attempts to illustrate the complexity of thermal infrared (TIR) data analysis for urban heat island studies. While a certain shift regarding the use of correct scientific nomenclature (using the term “surface urban heat island”) could be observed, the literature is full of incorrect conclusions and results using erroneous terminology. This seems to be the result of the ease of such literature implicitly suggesting that “warm surfaces” result in “high air temperatures”, ultimately drawing conclusions for urban planning authorities. It seems that the UHI is easy to measure, easy to explain, easy to find, and easy to illustrate—simply take a TIR-image. Due to this apparent simplicity, many authors seem to jump into UHI studies without fully understanding the nature of the phenomenon as far as time and spatial scales, physical processes, and the numerous methodological pitfalls inherent to UHI studies are concerned. This paper attempts to point out some of the many pitfalls in UHI studies, beginning with a proper correction of longwave emission data, the consideration of the source area of a thermal signal in an urban system—which is predominantly at the roof level—demonstrating the physics and interactions of radiation and heat fluxes, especially in relation to the importance of urban storage heat flux, and ending with an examination of examples from the Basel study area in Switzerland. Attention is then turned to the analysis of spatially distributed net radiation in the day- and at nighttime as a minimum requirement for urban heat island studies. The integration of nocturnal TIR images is notably recommended, as satellite data and the UHI-phenomenon cover the same time period.

Finally, issues like the potential durability and clinical importance are discussed. Self-etch adhesive systems are promising materials because they are easy to use, bond chemically to tooth structure and maintain the dentin hydroxyapatite, which is important for the durability of the bonding.

Abstract:
AbstractThis short article discusses whether it matters if non-computational colleagues fail to understand our (i.e. the digital humanists) work. The case study of the article is Hebrew literature and its community of scholars: surprisingly, despite the fact that the initial conditions are promising, it would appear that the digital humanities do not find access into the departments of Hebrew literature and the journals dedicated to it easy to come by. The article examines the reasons for this and describes a possible remedy for it—one where a conceptual rather than a technical foundation would provide the basis for a fruitful and critical dialogue between computational researchers and the rest. Such an approach is necessary not just for the research of small-scale literatures but also for the development of (computational) literary studies in general.

Getting to grips with critical appraisal is not easy. To some extent, it is a metaphorical bandwagon, overloaded with dogma, misinformation and mathematics. Its introduction into the MRCPsych curriculum (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2001) has left many trainers trying to catch up with their trainees' skills. This paper attempts to demystify some of the concepts, provide a balanced overview of the advantages and drawbacks of critical appraisal, and discuss ways of developing skills in critical appraisal.

Abstract:
The balanced scorecard is a formal management technique for developing, implementing, and managing business strategies. It isn't easy to ascertain the technique's success. Most of the literature on its implementation is put out by those with a vested interest in its success as a commercial product. Much has been written about barriers to strategy implementation but not specifically to implementing a balanced scorecard. The literature review in this paper shows that studies on BSC implementation in corporate organizations focus on improving organizational performance, assisting in decision making, assisting in component selection, evaluating production and learning and sustainable growth. This paper provides benefits for further research to add to the literature and understanding of the implementation of the Balanced Scorecard in any organization.

The hydroxy-pyrazole and 3-hydroxy-oxindole motifs have been utilised in several pharma and agrochemical leads but are distinctly underrepresented in the scientific literature due to the limited routes of preparation. We have developed a one-pot procedure for their synthesis starting from simple isatins. The method employs cheap and easy-to-handle building blocks and allows easy isolation.

This article emphasizes that discipleship is a fundamental task of the church. To guide Christians, particularly adults, for discipleship, literature is needed in the form of easy-to-understand reading materials. Andar Ismail, Christian educator in Indonesia, guides adult Christians to understand Jesus Christ through devotional books called the Selamat Series. Although readers find the works meaningful, they need to be used with a critical mind and attitude.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Meta-cognitive learning strategies training on memorizing, comprehension and the speed of reading easy and difficult courses for the high school first grade male students of Hamadan. To do so, 60 students were chosen in random cluster sampling and were randomly replaced in two experiment and control groups. The research designed, the pre- test post-test with control group in the curry study pre-tested was done for both group by using research-made academic achievement test that reliability and validity of it was confirmed. The experimental group was educated with cognitive learning strategies in 14 sessions, each 45 minutes, while control group did not receive any education. Then, the post-test of research-made academic achievement was carried out. The data analysis with MANOVA for differentiation scores showed that teaching cognitive learning strategies have increased memorizing and comprehension of student in easy and difficult literature and biology at the level of, while having a significant positive affection on the reading speed in easy and difficult literature and easy biology with significant no effect on the reading speed of difficult biology.

AbstractThe main result of this paper is a theorem about three conies in the complex or the real complexified projective plane. Is this theorem new? We have never seen it anywhere before. But since the golden age of projective geometry so much has been published about conies that it is unlikely that no one noticed this result. On the other hand, why does it not appear in the literature? Anyway, it seems interesting to "repeat" this property, because several theorems in connection with straight lines and (or) conies in projective, affine or euclidean planes are in fact special cases of this theorem. We give a few classical examples: the theorems of Pappus-Pascal, Desargues, Pascal (or its converse), the Brocard points, the point of Miquel. Finally, we have never seen in the literature a proof of these theorems using the same short method see the proof of the main theorem).

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION Low back pain effects up to 80% of the population at some time during their active life. Questionnaires are available to help measure pain and disability. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) is the most commonly used outcome measure for low back pain. The aim of this study was to see if training in completing the ODI forms improved the scoring accuracy. PATIENTS AND METHODS The last 100 ODI forms completed in a hospital's spinal clinic were reviewed retrospectively and errors in the scoring were identified. Staff members involved in scoring the questionnaire were made aware of the errors and the correct method of scoring explained. A chart was created with all possible scores to aid the staff with scoring. A prospective audit on 50 questionnaires was subsequently performed. RESULTS The retrospective study showed that 33 of the 100 forms had been incorrectly scored. All questionnaires where one or more sections were not completed by the patient were incorrectly scored. A scoring chart was developed and staff training was implemented. This reduced the error rate to 14% in the prospective audit. CONCLUSIONS Clinicians applying outcome measures should read the appropriate literature to ensure they understand the scoring system. Staff must then be given adequate training in the application of the questionnaires.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the factors in mobile game adoption that are influenced by game features and technology acceptance models. Partial least square is used to analyze the relationship between game features, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude, and intention to play mobile games. This study uses a sample of 408 respondents who have played mobile games in the past month. The results showed that game features are a determinant of intention to play mobile games. Game features also affect players' intentions and attitudes to play mobile games if the game features are easy to play and useful when played. Increasing mobile adoption requires features that are easy to play and useful if played. It will affect the player's attitude and intention to play. Game developers, game designers and game companies must create game features that create a pleasant experience for gamers. This study bridges the gap in the literature on mobile game adoption by explaining the relationship between game features and technology adoption.

Abstract:
A cursory review of academic headlines would suggest that educational institutions can be perceived as formalized, regimented and systematic – intellectual factories that reward those staff and students who conform best to rigid systems which ensure the efficient processing of quantity. Is this the reality? Do prevailing economic and bureaucratic pressures in higher education, at best, stifle creativity or, at worst, actively eradicate creative thought? This paper asks whether there is a place for the successful teaching and development of marketing and entrepreneurial creative skills within the UK educational system, and if so how these newly merging pedagogical areas can be nurtured. The paper explores the interplay between creativity and conformity within a modern university system. It takes as a case study a marketing enterprise module taught within a Department of Design to highlight the issues faced and the outputs achieved. The investigation reviews current thought from the social sciences and management literature relating to creativity, creative marketing, entrepreneurship and creative problem solving.
