Abstract:
Objectives: Home food environments are created when families stock their kitchens with food, which contributes to their dietary patterns and weight management. Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NPHIs) have a high prevalence of overweight and obesity. A description of their home food environment can help nurses understand NHPIs' dietary patterns. Our purpose was to describe NHPIs' home food environments by analyzing grocery store and restaurant receipts. Design and Sample: This descriptive study used analyzed qualitative and quantitative data from eight NHPI families, collected over an 8-week period. Measures: Grocery store and restaurant receipts were analyzed with descriptive statistics. Families' dietary patterns were studied with open-ended questions and compared to receipt data. Results: Food groups with the highest percent expenditures included combination foods (20%), protein foods (19%), and empty calorie food and drinks (11%). The lowest percent expenditures included fruits (8%), grains (7%), vegetables (7%), and dairy (6%). Families visited restaurants zero to 10 times (M = 2) per week. Conclusions: Results can help nurses address NHPIs' home food environment challenges by increasing their awareness of typical food purchases and helping NHPIs assess their own grocery and restaurant purchases and improve their own home food environments.

Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
Childhood’s overweight and obesity are a worrying issue in the world nowadays. The purpose of this study was to provide contributions to the promotion of healthy food by analyzing the impact of physical activity, parents’ influence and home meals frequency on children’s food choices. Structured questionnaires were used and were answered by 172 children between 10 and 14 years old and by their respective parents. Children and parents preferred healthy food vs. non-healthy food presenting the children’s healthy food choices a mean of 4.26 and the parent’s healthy food choices a mean of 4.47 in a scale ranging from 0 to 6. Our results also show that physical activity, parent’s education and home meals frequency did not have an impact on children’s food choices, contrasting to the sedentary behavior and parents’ choices which had a negative and positive correlation, respectively, with children’s food choices. Taking these results into account and using them to advise parents and companies, we underline that parents must guarantee an adequate children’s nutrition after doing physical efforts and control the time children watch TV and play computer games and companies may create marketing campaigns and educational programs in order to promote healthy food, improve children’s eating habits and reduce the childhood obesity prevalence.

Abstract:
This study examines the relationship that people have with the modern day food environment. This study used a qualitative approach using interviews, videotapes, and questionnaires with seventeen participants. This varied approach was used to understand the decision-making process at dinnertime when deciding whether to cook at home or eat out at a restaurant. This was examined primarily through semi-structured interviews as well as the observation and videotaping of individuals preparing meals at dinnertime. The research resulted in three different categories of importance: why people choose to eat out, how people utilize restaurants, and the current roles restaurants have in modern American society. The results show the importance of restaurants in modern society beyond the nourishment that a meal can provide. Many of the themes that arose in this research have been seen in other research in this field, but a few new areas came up. For example, using a restaurant as a resource for new recipes to prepare at home was an area that emerged that had not been mentioned in the previous research. This shows that the relationship that American’s have with the food environment outside the home is continuously transforming. Understanding all of the reasons people eat outside the home is important, as there is a general decrease in cooking practices inside the home. Gaining knowledge in how people make food choices on a daily basis is a good first step in being able to address public health issues that relate to food. This study explores the current food environment in order to have a deeper understanding of why people make the choice to eat outside the home, the ways people utilize restaurants, and the roles of restaurants in society.

Abstract:
Background: Food has many different functions. On a physical level, it is needed to survive and to maintain health, but it also has many social, psychological, and emotional meanings. For example, food is used to build relationships, to mark hierarchies, to celebrate holidays, and to influence mood and self-image. Different foods have different cultural meanings, and people are socialized from an early age to recognize and utilize their symbolic value. One arena where food occupies a central position is the Swedish school subject Home and Consumer Studies (HCS), which focuses on both the physical and the psychosocial dimensions of food-related health. Since these dimensions are not always compatible, the aim of this dissertation was to explore how students and teachers of HCS use big 'D' Discourses to talk about and handle food, with a special focus on vegetables, meat, vegetarian food, and sweet foods. Methods: Fifty-nine students and five teachers were observed, recorded, and in some cases video-taped. Participants’ talk about vegetables, meat, vegetarian food, and sweet foods was transcribed verbatim and analysed for big 'D' Discourses. Results: Students mostly based their choice of vegetables on sensory and cultural Discourses. Some vegetables were mandatory and others were optional, depending on whether or not they were part of a recipe or a cultural tradition. The health Discourse was only used if a specific assignment demanded it, and was closely tied to the evaluation Discourse. Contrary to the sometimes optional status of vegetables, meat was seen as central in the sensory, cultural, health, and social Discourses. Therefore the reduction of meat could be problematic. It was regarded as simultaneously healthy and unhealthy, and it could elicit disgust, but whenever participants talked about decreasing meat consumption, its centrality was invoked as a counterargument. As an extension of this, vegetarian food was seen as 'empty', deviant, and an unattainable ideal. Access to vegetarian food was limited for meat-eaters, and vegetarians were othered in both positive and negative ways. When vegetarian food was cooked during lessons, it was constructed as something out of the ordinary. Sweet foods could be viewed as a treasure, as something dangerous and disgusting, or as an unnecessary extra. Home-made varieties were seen as superior. Sweet foods gave social status to both students and teachers, and they could be traded or given away to mark relationships and hierarchies, but also withheld and used to police others. Conclusion: In summary, two powerful potential opposites met in the HCS classroom: the Discourses of normality (sensory, cultural, and social Discourses), and the Discourses of responsibility (health and evaluation). Normality could make physically healthy food choices difficult because of participants' social identity, the conflicted health Discourse, and too-strict ideals. On the other hand, some people were excluded from normality itself, notably vegetarians, who were seen as deviant eaters, and teachers, who had to balance state-regulated goals in HCS against local norms. To counteract such problems, teachers can 1) focus on sensory experiences, experimental cooking methods, and already popular foods, 2) challenge normality by the way they speak about and handle different types of food, 3) make cooking and eating more communal and socially inclusive, 4) explore the psychosocial dimension of health on the same level as the physical dimension, and 5) make sure they do not grade students' cultural backgrounds, social identities, or taste preferences. This might go some way towards empowering students to make informed choices about food and health. However, scant resources of things like time, money, and equipment limit what can be achieved in the subject.

Abstract:
Objective: Evaluate how a social marketing approach compares to traditional nutrition education curriculum for promoting behavioral changes related to eating and food. Design: Nonequivalent comparison group, entry-exit design. Participants from 12 Kentucky counties assigned either comparison or pilot group. Comparison group received traditional nutrition education curriculum and pilot group received the social marketing program, Cook Together, Eat Together (CTET) curriculum. EFNEP’s Behavior Checklist and 24-Hour Dietary Recall were administered at entry and exit of the 8-week programs. Participants: Females (18-72 years of age) from families eligible to receive SNAP benefits (n=64 comparison group participants, n=60 pilot group participants). Intervention: Comparison group completed an 8-week standard lesson and pilot group completed CTET program in varying time frames (1-8 weeks). Main Outcome Measures: Eating behavior changes between entry and exit for comparison versus pilot. Analysis: Quantitative data were analyzed using independent and paired t-tests with significance of P≤ 0.05 and 0.10. Results: Groups were demographically similar. Both had significant differences in entry and exit scores for Behavior Checklist and 24-Hour Recall (P≤ 0.05). Conclusion and Implications: Positive behavior change was observed in both comparison and pilot groups. A social marketing program proves to be a promising approach to nutrition education.

Abstract:
This thesis examines relationships between home, work and migration for Vietnamese people in East London. It contributes to a growing body of work within geographies of home, as well as furthering research on mobility and the city in super-diverse contexts. The study draws upon semi-structured interviews with participants who have migrated from Vietnam to East London under diverse circumstances, including individuals who arrived as refugees after the Vietnam War and other people who have migrated for work or education in recent years. The research has also involved visual methods and ethnography in participants' homes, workplaces and other urban spaces. The study situates home as a multi-scalar, material and imaginative concept, set of practices and emotions. It also highlights the translocal connections between home, work and urban dwelling in Vietnam and East London. Drawing upon participants' personal stories, I examine their journeys of migration and experiences of arrival in East London, framing the empirical material within concepts of navigation and urban learning. Alongside a recognition of the role of the city within migrant experiences of home, I argue that participants re-shape the city through their everyday mobilities and practices of dwelling. The thesis examines connections between home and work in Vietnam, drawing upon understandings of the Vietnamese home as a site of connection to other places and between living relatives, ancestors and the spirit world. I also consider relationships between home and work in East London, exploring how work may contribute to a sense of home in the city. I highlight the significance of objects, spiritual beliefs and practices in reconfiguring home across transnational space. This thesis also addresses participants' future homes and possibilities of return to Vietnam. Individual choices of mobility and settlement are situated within geopolitical dimensions of home and migration. I draw upon concepts of precarity and the geopolitics of home to argue that immigration statuses, transient work and housing are intertwined with personal experiences of home and can present a significant barrier to belonging in the city. Through its focus on individual experiences and practices of home, work and urban life among Vietnamese people in East London, this research makes a distinctive contribution to understanding home, work, migration and the city.

Townsend, Leanne. "Home making and identity : a psychology of personality processes in North East Scotland." Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/574.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the roles of identity and personality in the home making process. Well-known approaches to identity typically define context in social or temporalterms, largely neglecting the physical environment. Personalisation of the dwelling has been argued to function in self-definition and self-presentation, yet only a small body of research corroborates such theories. Personalisation of the dwelling therefore presents an ideal context within which to explore identity processes in the physical environment. The thesis argues that the connection of identity to a dwelling has strong psychological implications for dwellers. Such implications are investigated, particularly in relation to meanings of home. The first study explores psychological and social drivers on the personalisation process through interviews with people who have converted farm buildings to home use. In the second study, attitudes towards home making behaviours are investigated in relation to social and personal identity orientations. The study explores whether such identity-based personality traits influence the way in which the dwelling is used as a means of self-definition. In the third and final study in-depth interviews are carried out with people living in typical Aberdeenshire dwellings. These interviews explore the ways in which identity and personality are connected to the dwelling and how these contribute to the process of home. Quantitative findings suggest that only a small relationship exists between identity orientations and personalisation. However qualitative findings in particular from the third study show a strong link between various aspects of identity and the dwelling. The ways in which identity is connected to the dwelling vary as a function of personality differences. Importantly these connections contribute to the process of home. This research constitutes contributions to a number of research areas, in particular home research and research exploring the role of personalisation and possessions. The research brings together identity, personality and home - areas which have not previously been explored together in great detail. The thesis presents a valuable framework within which to study the interactions of place, personality and identity processes and therefore makes an important contribution to a number of academic fields, in particular environmental psychology and built environment research.

Metcalfe, Gemma. "Young women's everyday lives : home and work in the North East of England." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2248.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the everyday home and working lives of a group of twenty-one young women living in former mining regions in County Durham. Through an analysis of the women’s everyday lives, in particular their experiences of paid and unpaid work, I explore what it means for these women to be a young woman today. Based on in- depth interviews this thesis is concerned with the process of gendering in everyday life, in particular how the everyday work women do is key in the construction and (re)production of classed gender identities. Drawing on a performative understanding of gender (Butler 1990, Goffman 1969) combined with a recognition of the importance class plays both materially and culturally on the women’s lives (Bradley 2007, Fraser 1998, Jackson 1998, McNay 1999, 2000, 2004), I argue that work is key in the construction of the women’s identities, subjectivities and everyday life. Throughout the thesis I demonstrate the key role work plays in the women’s everyday lives and as such I argue for the continued importance of the Sociology of Work in a climate where the study of work has become less central, having being pushed aside by other sociological concerns (Halford & Strangleman 2009). In order that work remains relevant in the discipline, Halford & Strangleman suggest the need for a reintegration of the study of work with other sociological agendas. This thesis is one such attempt at this.

Al-Naim, Mashary Abdulla. "Continuity and change of identity in the home environment : development of the private house in Hofuf, Saudi Arabia." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/429.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of searching for identity in the house form in the city of Hofuf. Studies so far carried out into material culture in general and into the development of the house, specifically the use and meaning of space, in Saudi Arabia have not dealt with the matter of identity and how it relates, in its various manifestations, to house form. The main question to be considered is whether the house form in Hofuf responded to the need to express individual and collective identity. The assumptions behind this study were firstly that people's actions in relation to the home environment have been influenced in some way by continued traditions, secondly that these actions have been the expressions or attempted expressions of people's identity whether individual or collective, and thirdly that the exisiting identity of the contemporary home is a mix of of continued, developed and new traditions, meanings and experiences. This study has adopted the ethnographic approach because it is difficult to understand the relationship between people and their physical environment without going deep into their everyday lives. The interaction between people and physical form required from the researcher a study of the physical home environment in Hofuf as it has been in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Moreover not only the physical environment had to be investigated, but also how people understood and interpreted the meanings of physical forms. It was these considerations which led the researcher to measure many houses, to take many phtographs, to collect many floor plans, and to conduct many interviews with residents in Hofuf. The development of private home in the the city of Hofuf shows that there have been strong traditions and experiences which have maintained the significance of the home environment in general and the private home in particular over a period of time and through a series of changes in the its perceptual and associational aspects. In particular the contemporary private house in Hofuf shows, despite changes in layout and perceptual aspects, the enduring associational meaning and use of space within the home environment. The desire to express personal identity in the features of the house combined with the need to maintain privacy requirements, and other factors such as a greater demand for individualised sleeping spaces, has led, in the contemporary Hofuf house, to a potential crisis, where the increasing size of houses threatens to make them economically unviable. This situation has to be dealt with, perhaps through quantitative studies using the findings of this present investigation. In this way it may be possible for future planners and designers to retain the enduring and essential symbolic meanings of the private home while adapting and restructuring the physical home environment.

Smith, William A. Jr. "Parental Involvement in Schools: A Phenomenological Study of Four High Schools in a Rural East Tennessee County." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2001. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/86.

Full text
Abstract:
Parental involvement is a combination of commitment and active participation from parents to the school and to the student. Parental involvement defines the family’s role as educator and the crucial importance of family involvement to students’ success in schools. Some researchers and practitioners consider positive parental involvement the most prominent predictor of student success. Parents can increase children’s academic success through involvement with schools and communities. Parental involvement improves student morale, attitudes, and academic achievement across all subject areas. The purpose of this study was to examine the views of parents, students, teachers, and administrators concerning parental involvement in four high schools in a rural East Tennessee county. The study also attempted to determine if the views of these parents, students, teachers, and administrators are consistent with published reports on parent involvement. Data were collected from administrators, students, parents, and teachers through an open-ended interview format designed by the researcher. The findings from this study offer a number of recommendations regarding how high schools can develop partnership programs that involve families in ways that go beyond their participating as audience or witness to their children’s schooling to their participating as partners with the school in promoting teen’s learning. Participants desired effective home/school communications as well as a home environment that encouraged learning activities and suggested effective ways volunteers could be used at the high school level. Major recommendations include high schools forging connections with all families and providing options to increase their involvement at school as well as at home; establishing formal parent support organizations; developing partnerships that strengthen school-family relationships through authentic dialogue, collaboration, and mutual respect between families and educators; increasing opportunities for home/school communication; and creating a learning community where school personnel, students, parents, and community members view themselves as stakeholders.

Abstract:
“The main facts in human life are five: birth, food, sleep, love, and death.” – Forster, E.M., 1927, Aspects of the Novel. We might all have something to say about love, but we are certain about food. The thesis aims to develop a perspective on food, its role, and traditions as possible a tool of identification among first and second generation East-African migrants in Sweden, in the area of Falun. Particularly, I focused on the concept of gastronomic identity and the relation between food and nostalgia. The intention is to explore whether a gastronomic identity can be identified, and the importance of nostalgia by answering the following questions:1. How do the people interviewed refer to their gastronomic identity? How is it related to their country of origin, to Sweden, or a hybridization of the two?2. How do first and second generation of immigrants adapt their food traditions in the local context?3. What is the role of food, its tradition, and how is it related to the feeling of nostalgia for these people? In order to answer to these questions, I made use of an extensive academic literature research on food and gastronomic identity on both the historical and anthropological perspective and variety of multimedia materials (such as blogs, YouTube videos). I have also conducted semi-structured interviews with East African immigrants in Falun. Through the use of both literature and, above all, the interviews, I concluded that gastronomic identity takes on a much more personal and individual meaning than nationalistic or ethnic identity, and almost always emerges as a transculturalization of the two countries: Sweden and the country of origin. In the responses of the interviewed migrants from East Africa, it also emerges that food is an element to define our identity as individuals and it is linked to memory and influenced by the nostalgia of home. Therefore, according to the respondents, anywhere one may be, when feeling nostalgia, one will be looking for a taste of home, whatever and wherever it is.

Sievert, Sheree L. "Preserving bodies, preserving buildings : funeral homes in east-central Indiana." Virtual Press, 1999. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1133728.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, funeral homes have been family-owned small businesses which pride themselves on their personal, caring service. Many are located in historic houses worthy of preservation. In the past few decades, however, many family-owned funeral homes have been bought out by large, national corporations in search of big profits. The future of oldhouse funeral homes is uncertain. An inventory of funeral homes was conducted in a ninecounty area of east-central Indiana, including Blackford, Delaware, Grant, Hancock, Henry, Jay, Madison, Randolph, and Wayne Counties. Findings show that a majority (59%) of the funeral homes in the nine-county area of east-central Indiana inventoried are located in former residences built before 1950, with varying degree of modification. While some have had minimal or moderate alterations, a large percentage (54%) of these have been extensively altered over the years. Case studies of four pre-1950 funeral homes in the inventory area revealed that alterations, many of which reflect the needs of the funeral business, have affected not only their integrity but also their ratings in the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. Recommendations include greater communication between the funeral industry and preservationists, and the establishment of guidelines for sensitive additions that are addressed specifically to the needs of the funeral industry.

Abstract:
Discussions of hope and the imagined future have thus far focussed on grand ambitions at the expense of the more mundane, modest wants that are the preoccupation of everyday life. Studies of the home have demonstrated the role of material culture in embodying memory and household pasts but little has been said of household futures and their impact on household presents. This ethnographic study of the lives of three middle class households in south-east London addresses these gaps through an exploration of the role of imagined futures in orienting everyday life in the household. The ways in which householders work to make household life what they want it to be, and to secure the longer-term futures they imagine for their children, are explored through the frustrations, disappointments and anxieties that stem from the frequent failures of these efforts. Objects are demonstrated to be both the means through which householders attempt to make household life what they want it to be - their potentiality shaping and enabling imagined futures - and the means through which these imagined futures are reconfigured or derailed. The period of maternity leave, that all three of my women participants were in the midst of, is shown to be one in which the work of bringing the household's imagined futures, and children's imagined futures to fruition falls disproportionately to mothers, often at the expense of their own wants. Finally, a broader lens is used to explore how middle class householders' efforts to live the life they want contributes to and shapes the processes of gentrification credited with bringing dramatic change to south-east London.

Willems, Bastiaan Pieter Valentijn. "Violence in defeat : the Wehrmacht and late-War society in East Prussia, 1944-1945." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25939.

Full text
Abstract:
During the battles for East Prussia in the final year of the Second World War, the ruthless conduct of German troops resulted in vast material and personal damage. By focusing on the besieged ‘Festung Königsberg’ in the spring of 1945, this dissertation argues that the violence that transpired in Germany in 1945 can only be understood by devoting sustained attention to local actors and factors. By combining social history and military history approaches, the research restores agency to the German army, the Wehrmacht, as an active participant in the radicalisation of the German home front. This case study demonstrates that due to the fragmentation of Germany, the decisions and orders of Wehrmacht commanders had a disproportionately large impact at a local level. The radical nature of these decisions was the direct result of the commanders’ violent experiences during the preceding years, while the barbarised mindset of the rank-and-file encouraged the rigorous enforcement of military authority. The dissertation’s findings contribute to four themes within the historiography of the Second World War. First, it contributes to the recent debate surrounding the German Volksgemeinschaft by drawing attention to the limits of loyalty to the regime, and the actors and events that prompted this fidelity to shift. Secondly, by analysing a large number of unused archival sources, it provides the first in-depth urban history of everyday life in Königsberg during its 1945 siege. Thirdly, it challenges the conventional historiographical view in which fanatical Party officials were the main perpetrators of late-war violence by emphasising the significance of the Wehrmacht as a key actor. Even though large numbers of German troops operated in close proximity to German civilians, their conduct has hardly been considered as an explanation of the events of 1945. Lastly, this dissertation combines and transcends the different perspectives on German domestic and martial law, suggesting that the two were ever more closely intertwined as the war progressed, resulting in a shift of behavioural patterns. The focus on Königsberg and its immediate surroundings has allowed for a re-examination of late-war society, being the first to focus attention on the triadic relationship of Wehrmacht, Party, and civilian population.

Dagg, Bruce Ronald. "Debris supply to torrent-prone channels on the east side of Howe Sound, British Columbia." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26197.

Full text
Abstract:
Debris torrents (channelized debris flows) are a geomorphological process only relatively recently recognised in southwest British Columbia. They are of interest both because of the tremendous amount of geomorphic work they do, and because of the hazards they pose to engineering works and residential developments. Fourteen torrents on the east side of Howe Sound, near Vancouver, since October 1981, have claimed twelve lives. Debris torrents differ from water floods in that they involve large amounts of coarse organic and inorganic debris. Therefore, a major requirement for torrent occurrence in a given channel is a supply of mobilizable debris. This thesis examines debris supply mechanisms and rates of debris supply in four small watersheds along Howe Sound, near the village of Lions Bay. An inventory of major debris sources has been compiled, and selected typical sites are examined in detail. Study methods include airphoto interpretation, ground surveying and reconnaissance, field instrumentation and site monitoring, dendrochronology, and materials sampling and testing. Debris supply is controlled by natural factors such as the nature and distribution of the bedrock and surficial materials, topographic gradient, vegetation, weather, and surface and groundwater hydrology, and by human activities such as logging and road construction. A wide variety of debris supply mechanisms operate in the study area, including rockfall and rockslide, talus shift, debris slide, soil wedge failure, ravelling, and snow avalanche. In addition to delivering debris to channel systems, some of these processes are capable of triggering debris torrents. Debris redistribution in channels occurs through debris torrents which do not reach the fans, fluvial processes (bedload transport), and snow avalanches. Active debris removal from main supply points, and storage elsewhere in the channel system, can decrease the frequency but increase the magnitude of torrent events in the basin. The wide variety of debris supply, debris redistribution, and torrent triggering mechanisms acting in this relatively small area points to a need for careful study of individual basins if the torrent potential in an area is to be understood. Regionally-based climatological or hydrological models of torrent occurrence should be employed for preliminary hazard assessment only.

Ngconjana, Unati. "Narratives of challenge and motivation : the stories of East London Community Health Care volunteers." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/6325.

Full text
Abstract:
The research study was aimed at exploring the narratives of motivations and challenges that home-based health care workers experience in their voluntary service provision. It was conducted in East London in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. A total of seven participants who volunteer in home based care programmes were interviewed and their mean age was 30 years; all were females, two married, one a widow, one divorced and two single females. The narrative framework was used to explore the volunteers' interpretation of volunteering experiences, highlighting themes that emerged on what encourages them to volunteer as home based health care workers, and how they deal with challenges that arise during the provision of services. The research was also aimed at exploring the social factors supporting the volunteers' decision to continue volunteering. Narratives from the interviewed community health workers [CHWs] indicate that the motives for participating in CHW programmes are mainly altruistic although people are sometimes motivated by self-interest. Self-interest seems to be particularly relevant in the case of the younger volunteers as they expressed their hope that providing voluntary service may help to enhance their skills so as to facilitate future learning and employment prospects. The recurring themes within the CHWs' narrative indicate that they identify with the helping role and feel it empowers them as they participate in meaningful ways in their communities, and they gain strength to cope with challenges that come with community health work. This study highlighted the complex nature of home based care roles, which inevitably reflect the intervention approach, the mode of working, professional roles and relationships with communities.

Abstract:

This study examines Palestinian families exposed to house demolitions and their reactions to having their homes destroyed by the Israeli Authorities. The traumatic effects of suddenly becoming homeless is studied in a resiliency perspective, and comparisons with earlier research of resiliency and of mental health in the context of house demolitions are made. The purpose of the study is to illustrate the families’ reactions and their coping strategies in resisting the effects of trauma and desolation following repeated home demolitions. The data was collected through ethnographic field studies in Israel using participant observations, interviews, observations and documents. This study will conclude that the violation of homes has major influence on the mental health of the various family members. Men loose their value as providers, women loose the centre of their lives, and children loose their sense of safety and security. Discovery of how resilient protective factors empower the afflicted families when they rebuild their homes, in spite of the lack of being able to obtain building permits, is shown. However, the rebuilding is still a fragile process as the families often go through the trauma of demolition over and over again.

McMorran, T. J. "The Hope Fault at Hossack Station east of Hanmer Basin, North Canterbury." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Geology, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9947.

Full text
Abstract:
Oblique convergence of the Pacific and Australian Plates is accommodated in the northern South Island by the Marlborough Fault System. The Hope Fault is the southern of four major dextral strike-slip faults of this system. Hanmer Basin is a probable segment boundary between the Hope River and Conway segments of the Hope Fault. The Conway segment is transpressional and shows increasing structural complexity near the segment boundary at Hanmer Basin, with multiple Late Quaternary traces, and fault-parallel folding in response to across-fault shortening. Between Hossack Station and Hanmer Basin a crush zone in excess of one kilometre wide is exposed in incised streams and rivers. The crush zone has an asymmetrical geometry about the active trace of the Hope Fault, being only 100-300 metres wide south of the fault, and more than 500 metres wide north of the fault. The most intense deformation of Torlesse bedrock occurs at the south side of the fault zone, indicating that strain is accommodated against the fault footwall. North of the fault deformation is less intense, but occurs over a wider area. The wide fault zone at Hossack Station may reflect divergence of the Hanmer Fault, a major splay of the Hope Fault. At Hossack Station, the Hope Fault has accommodated at least 260 metres of dextral displacement during the Holocene. Dating of abandoned stream channels, offset by the Hope Fault, indicated a Late Holocene dextral slip-rate of 18±8 mm-¹ for the west end of the Conway segment. Using empirical formulae and inferred fault parameters, the expected magnitude of an earthquake generated by the Conway segment is M6.9 to M7.4; for an exceedence probability of 10%, the magnitude is M7.7 to M7.9. Effects associated with coseismic rupture of the Conway segment include shaking of up to MMIX along the ruptured fault and at Hanmer Basin. Uplift at the east end of Hanmer Basin, in conjunction with subsidence at the southwest margin of the basin, is resulting in the development of onlapping stratigraphy. Seismic reflection profiles support this theory. Possible along-fault migration of the basin is inferred to be a consequence of non-parallelism of the master faults.

Abstract:
The World Wide Web is increasingly used as medium, resource and platform for distance learning but in the literature surprisingly it is difficult to find works on Webbased distance learning pages authoring and edition. In fact, such activity is multidisciplinary, involving simultaneously many aspects of each page elaboration, since pedagogical viewpoint of content and navigation to user interface design. Particularly, authors are supposed to attend usability and accessibility criteria, in order to avoid serious usage problems like disorientation, navigation difficulties and frustration. However, potential e-learning authors - like teachers - usually are not experts in Web-page authoring and may be confused with diversity of resources available in common authoring tools. That is the main reason for development of authoring assistance tools. In addition, teachers do not know how to obtain and to apply usability and accessibility guidelines. The goal of this work is design, implementation and evaluation of a web-based distance learning pages authoring assistant, called EditWeb, in order to facilitate the design, elaboration and generation of instructional HTML web pages respecting usability and accessibility guidelines. The text contains some web-based distance learning fundamentals, discussing features of some environments, particularly their authoring process and mechanisms. Next, EditWeb environment specification and implementation is completely described. Finally, the evaluation of EditWeb by actual users and the validation of resulting pages are also discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis critically evaluates the charting of ‘home’ and ‘exile’ in regards to four Diasporic female artists from the Middle East, specifically, Iraq and Palestine. The study employs a dual approach in the examination of Diaspora; a theoretical one that engages in the literature on Diaspora and a practical one founded on the author’s interviews with the artists. Thus a comparative analysis of their biographical narratives with the existing literature underpins the discussion of the various realities of home and exile. Moreover, the study links three broad themes in its analysis and is thereby divided thematically into six chapters, excluding the study’s introduction and conclusion. Providing a sociopolitical perspective, Chapters One and Two examine the modern histories of Iraq and Palestine, depicting the political climate of both countries in general but more specifically in regards to the personal and individual experiences of the artists in their homelands. This, essentially, is set up in a way to illustrate the physical locality from which their uprooting and Diasporic journeys were initiated. Chapters Three and Four offer a theoretical outlook in their analysis of the issues pertaining to Diaspora; Chapter Three examines the Diasporic memories of the artists and their sense of distance from, or attachment to, the homeland from their positions in exile. Through examining the artists’ relationship with the homeland this chapter sheds light on the relationality of place and thus conceptualizes their Diasporic consciousness. Subsequently, Chapter Four demonstrates how the Diasporic consciousness of the artists grounds their ascriptions of ‘home’ and ‘exile’ and the construction of their Diasporic identity. The concluding chapters, Five and Six, grant the artists’ Diasporic trajectories visual narratives through an exploration of their artwork. The chapters uncover personal links between their artwork and their Diasporic context, and therefore highlight their work’s Diasporic iconography and biographical significance. The imagery in these chapters thus offers unique insights into the turmoil of war, exile, and loss, and the complexities of the Diasporic experience. Overall, the study rethinks the concepts of ‘home’ and ‘exile’ as grounded in fixed geographical foundations, and upholds that fundamental to the complex mapping of such notions is its location within the geographies of the mind.

Abstract:
While the government in Norway strives for equity in health and access, factors of urbanization, modernization, and sustainable development may discourage advancement in rural municipalities. In the rural hinterlands, often where the mountain belt resides, this is known to be caused by declining employment-rates in typical rural industries like agriculture and forestry. A consequence of this has been outmigration and lower numbers in the permanent population in most rural municipalities (Rye et al., 2011). Simultaneously, there is an ongoing trend of more second homes, particularly in rural areas, ascribed to second-home owners living in the cities. More second homes are evident from the country's growth of second homes on par with residential buildings since the 1970s and the existing second-home agglomerations around the major cities (Arnesen et al., 2011). The increased technical standard in second homes, from traditional cottages to high standard recreational homes with electricity- and water-utilities has also increased the year-round frequency of use (ibid). And while the political narrative is urbanization, this increased frequency of use in second homes may support a record of significant rural redistribution with second homes and domestic migration at its core (Ellingsen, 2017). The seasonal displacement from the cities to the recreational hinterland affects supply-demand ratios to important amenities i.e. casualty clinics, ambulance stations, and hospitals. This thesis investigates the current disparity using a GIS-approach.

Abstract:
With water scarcity becoming a more critical problem for the world, water disputes and their remediation are increasingly vital for nations today. In regions like the Middle East especially, one would not expect to see cooperation regarding resources looking at the state of affairs going on now. By discussing the Johnston Plan, a mediation process by an envoy of the U.S. between Israel and the Arab League, however, this paper describes how cooperation was achieved between states in the Jordan River basin regarding water usage. An in-depth analysis of cooperation and mediation aid in outlining how Johnston and the U.S. achieved a successful agreement for the region’s water development. Mediation, or third party intervention, is an elusive concept in literature, as it depends on the dimensions related to the conflict’s context, actors and mediator. Looking at the Johnston Plan, however, one discovers that Johnston achieved his de facto success due to the many components related to water disputes, the involved nations and the status of the United States.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: South Asians constitute the single largest ethnic minority group in the United Kingdom, yet little is known about their perspectives and experiences on end of life and its related care. Aim: To explore and critically examine views and perceptions about end of life issues among older South Asians living in East London. Methodology and methods: After gaining ethical approval, five focus groups and 29 in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with total of 55 older adults (24 men and 31 women) aged between 52 to 78 years. Participants from six South Asian ethnic groups were recruited through 11 local community organisations. Where possible the focus groups and interviews were conducted in the participants' preferred language. Tape recorded multilingual data were translated and transcribed into English. Using a constructive grounded theory approach, data analysis resulted in the development of a theory of “continuity and reconstruction” that captured three categories of ‘home’; ‘family’ and ‘trust’ at end of life. Findings: The theory of “continuity and reconstruction” is explored in three ways. Firstly, the theory is explored through examination of beliefs, attitudes and expectations about the place of ‘home’ and ‘homeland’ in care of the dying. Secondly, the theory is explored as accounts of “family” in terms of how family are bound towards caring for their dying relatives at end of life and the importance of support from social networks in family care giving. Finally, the theory is explored in terms of how participants place “trust” in their family and medical professionals to lead any related discussion and to make decisions related to their death and dying. Conclusion: The theoretical framework of “continuity and reconstruction” explains how older South Asians make efforts to adhere to important social and cultural values relating to death and dying, while rebuilding and adapting those values during the challenges of living in an emigrant society. This study highlights the need for further exploration of family care giving needs among South Asian population and concludes by drawing attention to some practical implications for health professionals who are responsible for initiating end of life discussions and are involved in end of life decisions when caring for people from these ethnic minority groups.

Berger, N. "Neighbourhood and home environments and adolescent physical activity behaviours : longitudinal analyses of the Olympic Regeneration in East London (ORiEL) study." Thesis, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London), 2018. http://researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk/4649763/.

Full text
Abstract:
Context: Regular physical activity has been shown to prevent major non-communicable diseases and improve physical and mental health. However, a quarter of adults and the majority of adolescents do not achieve the recommended level of physical activity in England. In recent years, the home and neighbourhood environments as determinants of physical activity have received attention because of their proximal influence on everyday behaviours, especially in young people. The current literature on adolescents is however limited. This thesis aims to investigate whether features of the home and neighbourhood environments – specifically, perceptions of the neighbourhood environment, ethnic density, neighbourhood trust and social support – predict physical activity and its change over time in an ethnically diverse and deprived adolescent population. Methods: Longitudinal data from the Olympic Regeneration in East London (ORiEL) study (2012-2014) are used. Analyses are conducted on four physical activity outcomes, namely, walking to school, walking for leisure, outdoor physical activity, and pay and play physical activity. Models are estimated using generalised estimating equations, and novel methods for handling missing data with multilevel multiple imputation are applied. Results: Analyses show that adolescents’ perceptions of their neighbourhood environment (including proximity, aesthetics, street connectivity, traffic safety and personal safety) and their changes over time do not consistently predict the forms of physical activity investigated. School-level ethnic density increases the chance of walking to school in some ethnic groups and decreases it in others; whereas walking for leisure and outdoor physical activity are not consistently associated with ethnic density. Adolescents with higher perceived trust in their neighbours have higher chances of reporting outdoor physical activity, and pay and play physical activity. Finally, general social support from family, friends and significant others is shown to predict walking for leisure and its change over time. In boys only, social support from friends predicts outdoor physical activity. Discussion: This thesis advances the field methodologically and empirically by applying novel analytical approaches to important research questions. Results from this thesis contribute to our understanding of the individual, family, peer, community and neighbourhood influences on physical activity in adolescents. The predictors of physical activity identified in this thesis are mostly modifiable and therefore could be the target of policies and interventions that aim to improve physical activity.

In Reading Television: Limits of the course TV in the School and the Challenges of Today in Sergipe , we had as objective to detect that type of critical reading of the cultural texts produced by the television, professionals of the education of the public net of the basic and average education of the state of Sergipe that all had concluded its 3 (three) modules carries through. We were effectively tutorial of the first edition of this course of extension in the distance and witness some inconsistencies in its application, moment where the instigated investigation appeared: ahead of the current necessity of if understanding with a critical sense, the paper that plays it measured them in orchestration of the globalizado world, that type of critical reading of the audiovisual language is capable to carry through a professional of the education that participated of a course of this nature? Beginning with documental analysys and qualitative metodology we try to analyse in four chapters, since the origins and motivations of this course, to the opinions of 10 (ten) former course students about the approaches of the same thematic subject by two different television new programs, without missing the opinions of the tutors about the conditions in which were made 4 (four) consecutive editions of the course in Sergipe nor the concrete relationships estabilished by the former course students and the audiovisual on their everyday routine both at home and at work. We conclude that the reading made by the former course students is based on common sense and then not satisfactory to the requirements of this task nowadays, and at the same time we point out that the course failed, for it presented severe issues in terms of management and operations in its practical application to distance, by priorizing quantity over quality, by linking itself to a deficient technical structure, by not beholding the diosyncrasies nor the fundamental videos the teachers have access everyday and that it all had direct relation with the attachment of this course to a verticalized policy of technologization of brazilian education.

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Joint Program in Oceanography/Applied Ocean Science and Engineering (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences; and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), 2008.

The subtidal circulation of the southeast Greenland shelf is described using a set of high resolution hydrographic and velocity transects occupied in summer 2004. The main feature present is the East Greenland Coastal Current (EGCC), a low-salinity, high velocity jet with a wedge-shaped hydrographic structure characteristic of other surface buoyancy-driven currents. The EGCC was observed along the entire Greenland shelf south of Denmark Strait, while the transect north of the strait showed only a weak shelf flow. This observation, combined with evidence from chemical tracer measurements that imply the EGCC contains a significant Pacific Water signal, suggests that the EGCC is an inner branch of the polar-origin East Greenland Current (EGC). A set of idealized laboratory experiments on the interaction of a buoyant current with a submarine canyon also supported this hypothesis, showing that for the observed range of oceanic parameters, a buoyant current such as the EGC could exhibit both flow across the canyon mouth or into the canyon itself, setting the stage for EGCC formation. Repeat sections occupied at Cape Farewell between 1997 and 2004 show that the along shelf wind stress can also have a strong influence on the structure and strength of the EGCC and EGC on timescales of 2-3 days. Accounting for the wind-induced effects, the volume transport of the combined EGC/EGCC system is found to be roughly constant (-2 Sv) over the study domain, from 68*N to Cape Farewell near 60°N. The corresponding freshwater transport increases by roughly 60% over this distance (59 to 96 mSv, referenced to a salinity of 34.8). This trend is explained by constructing a simple freshwater budget of the EGCC/EGC system that accounts for melt water runoff, melting sea-ice and icebergs, and net precipitation minus evaporation.
(cont.) Variability on inter annual timescales is examined by calculating the Pacific Water content in the EGC/EGCC from 1984-2004 in the vicinity of Denmark Strait. The PW content is found to correlate significantly with the Arctic Oscillation index, lagged by 9 years, suggesting that the Arctic Ocean circulation patterns bring varying amounts of Pacific Water to the North Atlantic via the EGC/EGCC.

Abstract:
A ‘new’ phenomenon in the form of employing foreign domestic workers (FDW), or maids, whose jobs often include caring for children, appears to be an increasing global trend. Consequently, migrant women from developing countries provide an inexpensive and accessible child care alternative, which could be regarded as widespread in certain regions. Growth in the movement of population and mounting global interdependence, has also contributed to an increase in educational institutions labelled international schools. As an educator in five of these diverse institutions, I became aware that the trend of hiring maids, who because of their social position often do many basic tasks for children in their care, has entered the world of international schools in particular geographical areas. This has often concerned professionals. This small-scale study, therefore, explores the perceived social and educational implications of home/school differences in pedagogic orientation in children who have maids, bringing to light a matter of consequence, to certain international schools in particular, in more academic terms. Two very different schools in the Arabian Gulf, both regarded as operating in an international context, were the focus for this study. Drawing on Vygotskian and post-Vygotskian theories, I used sociocultural theory and Engeström’s model of activity theory as a theoretical framework from which to design the inquiry, and carry out the analysis. Using the two sample schools to access key-stakeholders, this inquiry involved multi-methods of mainly qualitative data collection, which explored a situation where maids are often heavily involved in children’s upbringing. A range of nationalities were included. Important messages emerged, including the notion of maids appearing to be culturally embedded amongst a number of affluent host country nationals and expatriates in my context. Additionally, significant differences appear to exist between children with maids at home and those without, with implications for learning amongst ‘maid children’, which might be perceived as a result of maid intervention. The thesis concludes with recommendations for educationalists and parents. Views of most key stakeholders underpin a model which could guide new practice and go some way towards alleviating the consequences of such a situation.
