Abstract:
Public discourse about food generally consists of nutritional guides, ethical philosophies, labeling schemes, and food industry trends, all of which try to offer often competing solutions to consumers seeking to know more about what is good to eat. As this anxiety about eating right continues to grow, what consumers really need is a more informed, educated, and critical relationship to dietary health and dietary advice, rather than more information about the nutritional content of food or where it comes from. This article first provides a brief overview of the emerging critical nutrition studies before analyzing the history and historiography of nutrition and dietary health in the United States since the late nineteenth century. It argues that critical nutrition studies as a discipline provide the foundation for a new "critical dietary literacy," and thus can help us rethink contemporary discourses of food and health.

Abstract:
What philosophy informs the European Union’s internal market? In the history of European integration three market models can be distinguished: an international model, a federal model, and a national model. Under the international model, each State commits itself to limiting its external sovereignty, while it retains internal sovereignty over its national market. By contrast, the federal model accepts that within a ‘common market’ States must lose a part of their internal sovereignty; and in line with the principle of ‘home state’ control, goods are generally entitled to be freely sold on a ‘foreign’ market once they comply with the law of their home state. Finally, according to the ‘national’ market model, all trade restrictions that are above a—legislative or judicial—Union standard must be removed. The book argues that the EU internal market—and in particular the structure of its law—has generally evolved from an international to a federal market philosophy.

Baloh, Robert W. Breuer’s Contributions to Psychiatry and Philosophy. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190600129.003.0007.

Abstract:
Josef Breuer was a practicing physician who saw many patients with psychiatric symptoms. He was a scientist and philosopher, but at his core he was a physician. His foray into the field of psychiatry can be directly traced to his patients, particularly a girl who became ill while she was nursing her sick father. Breuer and Freud called the girl Anna O. in their book on hysteria, but later it was revealed that her name was Bertha Pappenheim. Breuer first told Freud about Pappenheim in November 1882 approximately 5 months after he stopped treating her. It would be more than a decade, however, before they published her case history. Breuer and Freud collaborated on numerous clinical cases, but Breuer did not write any further on psychoanalysis. Breuer did maintain an active interest in the function of the inner ear until his death in 1925.

It also covers the liability of intermediaries, and new copyright obligations concerning technological protections and copyright management information. It concludes with some observations concerning the role of copyright in promoting creativity and free expression.

Abstract:
This book presents the outcomes of the research project on “The New Silk Road: Implications for higher education and research cooperation between China and Europe.” It addresses questions regarding how academic mobility and cooperation is taking shape along the New Silk Road and what difference it will make in the global higher education landscape. It presents a rich collection of contributions by scholars from Europe, China, the USA, Russia, and Australia, combining perspectives from anthropology, computer sciences, economics, education, history, law, political science, philosophy, science and technology studies, sinology, and sociology. Introductory chapters present the global context for the NSR, the development of Chinese universities along international models, and the history and outcomes of EU–China cooperation. The flows and patterns in academic cooperation along the New Silk Road as they shape and have been shaped by China’s universities are explored in more detail in the following chapters. The conditions for Sino-foreign cooperation are discussed next, with an analysis of regulatory frameworks for cooperation, recognition, data, and privacy. Comparative work follows on the cultural traditions and academic values, similarities and differences between Sinic and Anglo-American political and educational cultures, and their implications for the governance and mission of higher education, the role of critical scholarship, and the state and standing of the humanities in China. The book concludes with contributions focusing on the “Idea of a University”; the values underpinning its mission, shape, and purpose, reflecting on the implications of China’s rapid higher education development for the geo-politics of higher education itself.
