Abstract:
The comment by Messier and Joly on a paper by Eberhardt (L.L. Eberhardt. 1997. Can. J. Zool. 75: 1940-1944) suggests that the data in the earlier paper do not demonstrate a regulatory effect of wolves (Canis lupus) on their ungulate prey. It appears that the disagreement results from the use of quite different models, with Messier's approach (F. Messier. 1994. Ecology, 75: 478-488) apparently depending on the assumption of an equilibrium between wolf abundance and prey abundance, while Eberhardt's model depicts non-equilibrium conditions. Some questions having to do with duplications in secondary data sources are further examined.

Abstract:
The wanderlust spirit of the Russo-Swiss Muslim convert Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904), who lived a nomadic lifestyle in Algeria, has always disclosed a metaphysical vision that is persistently echoed in her literary works. She opted for a linguistic immersion that left many prints on her diaries. She was systematically accused by the French colonial regime of being a turncoat, and this is precisely why publishers of that time refused to disseminate (via publications or translations) what they considered to be ‘unorthodox’ and ‘threatening’ thoughts. Fortunately, things have changed for the better since then, as many scholars/translators are now trying to decipher Eberhardt’s moral fiber. A case in point would be Steele’s (2011) English translation of Eberhardt’s “Silhouettes d’Afrique” (1898). Steele set herself the task –after a blatant shortage of scholarly contributions valuing Eberhardt’s literary creations– to play the role of an advocate who would restore the biased positions taken against the author’s motives/works on account of her pro-Arabo-Islamic and anti-colonial views. This paper argues for a better appreciation of otherness through Steele’s ‘historiographic’ rendering, which reflects Eberhardt’s position vis-à-vis some orientalists’ vision which she was not to follow; even if there appear to be parallels between both. Finally, I come to conclude that the translator’s confessions as regards her deliberate choice to confront English-speaking readers with local Arabic terms (Burnous, tolba, Haik, mueddine, etc.) highlight the existence of a more affable audit.

Abstract:
“LÂ ILLÂHA ILLA-LLÂH”: THE ISLAM OF ISABELLE EBERHARDT AND RELIGIOUS TRANSFORMATIONS The present paper focuses on the religious quest of Isabelle Eberhardt 1877–1904, a French-language writer and traveller of Russian origins. Influenced by her atheistic education and Romantic writings rebelling against the Christian God, she looks for faith in Islam. This study explains the reasons why she adopted the Muslim religion, shows how she describes Islam and, finally, depicts her doubts and the changes she introduced to the religion to be able to accept it. Her writings are an interesting testimony of religious transformations of her times, but may also be in line with the contemporary post-secular thought.

Abstract:
We discuss regulation of moose (Alces alces) populations by wolves (Canis lupus) in the context of a recent article by Eberhardt (L.L. Eberhardt. 1997. Can. J. Zool. 75: 1940-1944), who contended that the killing rate of moose by wolves was constant. Further, he argued that wolf population size was proportional to prey density, and that wolf predation exerted a regulatory effect on ungulate-prey numbers. We argue that this combination of functional and numerical responses results in density-independent predation that cannot regulate prey numbers. We discuss the present understanding of wolf-moose interactions and conclude that there is evidence suggesting density dependence in both functional and numerical responses. Further, we conclude that predation by wolves is density-dependent, at least at low moose densities, and therefore can act as a regulatory factor.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the novel att våga vara… [to dare being…] (1948) based on the life of the explorer Isabelle Eberhardt (1877–1904), by the Swedish author Ulla Bjerne (1890–1969). Annotations in her diary as well as Eberhardt’s diary and biography, are in addition taken into account, read as examples of female situated embodiment and part of a feminist nomadic practice, as elaborated by Rosi Bradidotti, in Bjerne’s aim to give representation to a new type of woman. It entails resistance to hegemonic, fixed and exclusionary views on feminine subjectivity, the affirmation of movement and the process of becoming, and the construction of new conceptions and images of women. The central hypothesis in the article is that travelling in att våga vara… has a potential to nomadize the female subject both literally and figuratively, in the quest to give representation to a situated, embodied female subjectivity, in both body and word.

Abstract:
The place and the importance of the writing construction in analysis are no longer to be demonstrated. Freud is one of the firsts to make allusion in Construction et analyse. But what is it when one of the steps of self writing is done by self writing as another; in other words, by intermediary pseudonyme? How can writing correct desableted identity and the suffering to be ? How can it fullfill in father absence and correct the mother relation défined as being pathologic? These are the raised questions in this research. To answer it and enrich the psychanalitic reflexion in relation to the self writing, we will be interestd in Isabelle Eberhardt’s diary, correspondences and a part of her short stories

Fille naturelle d'une exilee russe, i. Cette these contient quatre parties: 1. L'analyse detaillee du premier roman d'i. Eberhardt; 2. Analyse stylistique du journal intime d'i. M.

Abstract:
Beginning in 1976 the University of Pittsburgh (UoP), initially through its Department of Surgery and later including the Swanson School of Engineering and McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, has been actively engaged in the design and clinical utilization of cardiopulmonary assist devices for adult and pediatric patients. In launching these initiatives, the focus was on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) applied primarily to infants with respiratory distress, congenital and/or acquired cardiac disease. A leader in these early days of ECMO was Professor Robert Eberhart, who not only detailed the underlying bio-transport principles or oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in ECMO devices, but who also participated in the early clinical utilization of ECMO. Professor Eberhart presented his path-finding results on an annual basis at the national meetings of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) with publication in Transactions ASAIO [1–3].

Abstract:
The agronomic stability of the variety, along with high yields, is an indispensable condition for its zoning in risky farming areas, which include also the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The technology of cell selection under inducted stress in vitro (salinity, low pH) may produce genetic diversity based on the somaclonal variations. A comparative assessment of the yield stability of the regenerate varieties obtained by this method and of their donor genotypes was carried out. Field experiments were carried out for three years differing by moisture at the experimental production farm “Minino” near Krasnoyarsk city. The linear regression coefficient (bi) and squared deviation (s2 d) had suggested by S.A. Eberhart and W.A. Russell were used for the evaluation of varieties. A significant difference in phenotypic stability was revealed between donor varieties and regenerate ones. The regenerate varieties appeared to be better adapted to low-yielding locations (bi<0,7). However, the presence of a number of regenerate varieties, demonstrating, in comparison with the donor genotype, greater yield stability (bi → 1; s2 d → 0) with an average yield close to the original genotype, is to be noted. This shows the potential of cell selection for the stability increase of high yield varieties. In general, high variability of regenerate varieties deviation from their donor

The phenotypic analysis of new candidate varieties at multiple locations could provide information on the stability of their genotypes. We evaluated the stability of 11 maize hybrid candidates in five districts in East Java Province, Indonesia. Maize hybrids with high yield potential and early maturity traits derived from a diallel cross were planted in a randomized complete block design with two checks (Srikandi Kuning and BISI-2) as a single factor with four replicates. The observed traits were grain yield per hectare and harvest age. The effects of environment, genotype, and genotype × environment interaction on yield were highly significant (P < 0.01). KTM-1, KTM-2, KTM-4, KTM-5, and KTM-6 showed higher average grain yield per hectare than the checks (Srikandi Kuning = 8.49 ton ha−1 and BISI-2 = 7.32 ton ha−1) at five different locations. The average harvest age of 11 candidates was less than 100 days. KTM-4 and KTM-5 had production yields that were higher than the average yield of all genotypes in all environments (Yi > 7.78 tons ha−1) and were considered stable on the basis of three stability parameters, i.e., Finlay–Wilkinson, Eberhart–Russell, and additive main effect multiplicative interaction (AMMI). KTM-2 had the highest yield among all tested genotypes (9.33 ton ha−1) and was considered as stable on the basis of AMMI but not on the basis of Finlay–Wilkinson and Eberhart–Russell. KTM-1 performed well only in Pamekasan, whereas KTM-6 performed well only in Sampang. Thus, these two genotypes could be targeted for these specific locations.
