Eberhardt, L. L. "Reply: Predator-prey ratio dependence and regulation of moose populations." Canadian Journal of Zoology 78, no. 3 (April 1, 2000): 511–13. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/z99-224.

Abstract:
The comment by Messier and Joly on a paper by Eberhardt (L.L. Eberhardt. 1997. Can. J. Zool. 75: 1940-1944) suggests that the data in the earlier paper do not demonstrate a regulatory effect of wolves (Canis lupus) on their ungulate prey. It appears that the disagreement results from the use of quite different models, with Messier's approach (F. Messier. 1994. Ecology, 75: 478-488) apparently depending on the assumption of an equilibrium between wolf abundance and prey abundance, while Eberhardt's model depicts non-equilibrium conditions. Some questions having to do with duplications in secondary data sources are further examined.

Abstract:
The wanderlust spirit of the Russo-Swiss Muslim convert Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904), who lived a nomadic lifestyle in Algeria, has always disclosed a metaphysical vision that is persistently echoed in her literary works. She opted for a linguistic immersion that left many prints on her diaries. She was systematically accused by the French colonial regime of being a turncoat, and this is precisely why publishers of that time refused to disseminate (via publications or translations) what they considered to be ‘unorthodox’ and ‘threatening’ thoughts. Fortunately, things have changed for the better since then, as many scholars/translators are now trying to decipher Eberhardt’s moral fiber. A case in point would be Steele’s (2011) English translation of Eberhardt’s “Silhouettes d’Afrique” (1898). Steele set herself the task –after a blatant shortage of scholarly contributions valuing Eberhardt’s literary creations– to play the role of an advocate who would restore the biased positions taken against the author’s motives/works on account of her pro-Arabo-Islamic and anti-colonial views. This paper argues for a better appreciation of otherness through Steele’s ‘historiographic’ rendering, which reflects Eberhardt’s position vis-à-vis some orientalists’ vision which she was not to follow; even if there appear to be parallels between both. Finally, I come to conclude that the translator’s confessions as regards her deliberate choice to confront English-speaking readers with local Arabic terms (Burnous, tolba, Haik, mueddine, etc.) highlight the existence of a more affable audit.

Abstract:
“LÂ ILLÂHA ILLA-LLÂH”: THE ISLAM OF ISABELLE EBERHARDT AND RELIGIOUS TRANSFORMATIONS The present paper focuses on the religious quest of Isabelle Eberhardt 1877–1904, a French-language writer and traveller of Russian origins. Influenced by her atheistic education and Romantic writings rebelling against the Christian God, she looks for faith in Islam. This study explains the reasons why she adopted the Muslim religion, shows how she describes Islam and, finally, depicts her doubts and the changes she introduced to the religion to be able to accept it. Her writings are an interesting testimony of religious transformations of her times, but may also be in line with the contemporary post-secular thought.

Abstract:
We discuss regulation of moose (Alces alces) populations by wolves (Canis lupus) in the context of a recent article by Eberhardt (L.L. Eberhardt. 1997. Can. J. Zool. 75: 1940-1944), who contended that the killing rate of moose by wolves was constant. Further, he argued that wolf population size was proportional to prey density, and that wolf predation exerted a regulatory effect on ungulate-prey numbers. We argue that this combination of functional and numerical responses results in density-independent predation that cannot regulate prey numbers. We discuss the present understanding of wolf-moose interactions and conclude that there is evidence suggesting density dependence in both functional and numerical responses. Further, we conclude that predation by wolves is density-dependent, at least at low moose densities, and therefore can act as a regulatory factor.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the novel att våga vara… [to dare being…] (1948) based on the life of the explorer Isabelle Eberhardt (1877–1904), by the Swedish author Ulla Bjerne (1890–1969). Annotations in her diary as well as Eberhardt’s diary and biography, are in addition taken into account, read as examples of female situated embodiment and part of a feminist nomadic practice, as elaborated by Rosi Bradidotti, in Bjerne’s aim to give representation to a new type of woman. It entails resistance to hegemonic, fixed and exclusionary views on feminine subjectivity, the affirmation of movement and the process of becoming, and the construction of new conceptions and images of women. The central hypothesis in the article is that travelling in att våga vara… has a potential to nomadize the female subject both literally and figuratively, in the quest to give representation to a situated, embodied female subjectivity, in both body and word.

Abstract:
This study aims to describe the main character’s attitude to nature and it influences to his environmental stewardship in Carl Hiaasen’s novel Hoot. Deep Ecology theory by Bill Devall and George Sessions is applied in this study in studying the attitude of Roy Eberhardt to his environment and how it affects his environmental stewardship. This study used qualitative research as a method to analyze the data. The data of this study are Roy Eberhardt’s utterances, behavior, action and author’s narration in the novel. There are some conclusions based on the study; 1) Roy attitude’s toward nature are active and positive. It causes Roy to feel responsible to the preservation of environment around him like how he tries to save the owls. 2) Roy’s attitude that thought any creatures have the same right to life makes him to take non-violence action to save the nature. The attitude influences Roy to take peaceful actions to stop the owls’ nest destroyed by the industry.

Cet article propose d’examiner comment le vagabondage d’Eberhardt en tant que pensée et en tant que mode de vie est une subversion se différenciant du concept de la flânerie qui connaît le succès à Paris, dans des cadres bien définis.

This study aims to investigate the many forms of the preface in relation to the conditions of its production and the profile of the preface writer in certain travel accounts in Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, or Turkey from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. It is interesting to see the diversity of the construction of the self in the prolegomenes, intended to enhance the good reception of the narrative. From the simple traveller in search of exoticism to the passionate missionary, the prefaces of travel relationships offer an array of discursive strategies where the narrator's ethos underpins a rhetoric specific to the travel literature. Lady Montagu, Bugéja, Eberhardt, Montesquieu, Loti and other travellers invite the reader not only to explore a travel experience, but also to grasp the secrets of a rhetorical approach consciously undertaken.

Ninety-six participants with normal hearing and 63 with severe-to-profound hearing impairment viewed 100 CID Sentences (Davis & Silverman, 1970) and 100 B-E Sentences (Bernstein & Eberhardt, 1986b). Objective measures included words correct, phonemes correct, and visual-phonetic distance between the stimulus and response. Subjective ratings were made on a 7-point confidence scale. Magnitude of validity coefficients ranged from .34 to .76 across materials, measures, and groups. Participants with hearing impairment had higher levels of objective performance, higher subjective ratings, and higher validity coefficients, although there were large individual differences. Regression analyses revealed that subjective ratings are predictable from stimulus length, response length, and objective performance. The ability of speechreaders to make valid performance evaluations was interpreted in terms of contemporary word recognition models.

Abstract:
Many scholars and activists assume the public would be motivated to fight inequality if only they knew the full extent of existing disparities. Ironically, exposure to extreme disparities can cause people to become more, not less, supportive of the very policies that create those disparities (Hetey & Eberhardt, 2014). Here, we focus on the criminal justice system—policing and incarceration in particular. We argue that bringing to mind racial disparities in this domain can trigger fear and stereotypic associations linking Blacks with crime. Therefore, rather than extending an invitation to reexamine the criminal justice system, the statistics about disparities may instead provide an opportunity to justify and rationalize the disparities found within that system. With the goals of spurring future research and mitigating this paradoxical and unintended effect, we propose three potential strategies for more effectively presenting information about racial disparities: (a) offer context, (b) challenge associations, and (c) highlight institutions.

Abstract:
Wagner?s law and Keynes? hypothesis has long been debated in economics. In this paper, we test the income-expenditure hypothesis for eighty-one of Turkey?s provinces for the period 1992 to 2013 using panel data analysis. For this purpose, the validity of these hypotheses is tested by applying recent panel cointegration and causality techniques, allowing for cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity between regions. Under the presence of cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity, the level of integration of the variables was tested by means of the cross-sectionally augmented Dickey-Fuller test, the presence of long-run relationship of the variables was tested with the Westerlund-Edgerton Lagrange multiplier bootstrap test, long-run cointegration coefficients were estimated with the Eberhardt-Bond panel augmented mean group method, and finally causality relationship was defined by the Dumitrescu-Hurlin test. The results of this study provide strong support for the validity of Wagner?s law and Keynes? hypothesis for Turkey.

Abstract:
AbstractThe orientation of fibers in assemblies such as nonwovens has a major influence on the anisotropy of properties of the bulk structure and is strongly influenced by the processes used to manufacture the fabric. To build a detailed understanding of a fabric’s geometry and architecture it is important that fiber orientation in three dimensions is evaluated since out-of-plane orientations may also contribute to the physical properties of the fabric. In this study, a technique for measuring fiber segment orientation as proposed by Eberhardt and Clarke is implemented and experimentally studied based on analysis of X-ray computed microtomographic data. Fiber segment orientation distributions were extracted from volumetric X-ray microtomography data sets of hydroentangled nonwoven fabrics manufactured from parallel-laid, cross-laid, and air-laid webs. Spherical coordinates represented the orientation of individual fibers. Physical testing of the samples by means of zero-span tensile testing and z-directional tensile testing was employed to compare with the computed results.
