Early B-cell factor 2 (Ebf2) is one of four mammalian members of the helix-loophelix transcription factor family Collier/Olf/Ebf (COE). COE proteins EBF1, EBF2 and EBF3 have been implicated in various aspects of neural development including neurogenesis, cell differentiation, neuronal migration and axonal fasciculation. Here, I examined the role of one of these proteins, EBF2, on the development of the cerebral cortex. Along major Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) local and seasonal changes in the equatorward wind stress (e.g. Ekman Upwelling) and cross-shore gradients of the wind (e.g. Ekman Pumping) are the main drivers of the three dimensional ocean circulation that controls coastal sea surface temperature (SST) and the upwelling of ocean tracers (e.g. nutrients). Population structure in five African beef cattle breeds in South Africa was investigated, to assess the effect of animal recording in management of genetic diversity and genetic improvement. Pedigree records of 247,173 Afrikaner, 57,561 Boran, 198,557 Drakensberger, 256,692 Nguni and 55,309 Tuli breed were analysed using the online POPREP software system. Magister Scientiae (Biodiversity and Conservation Biology)<br>Coastal upwelling is one of the most important oceanographic processes relating to ecosystem function at local and global spatial scales. To better understand how changes in upwelling trends may occur in the face of ongoing anthropogenically induced climate change it is important to quantify historical trends in climatic factors responsible for enabling coastal upwelling. However, a paucity of conclusive knowledge relating to patterns concerning changes in upwelling across the world’s oceans over time makes such analyses difficult.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) have been used in a variety of consumer products to enhance their fire safety. This has resulted in exposure of the environment, wildlife and humans causing risks of endocrine disruption. The use restrictions of many BFRs have resulted in the introduction of other brominated chemicals (emerging BFRs) on the market.
