Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to uncover factors related to students’ preference for ebooks with hopes that understanding what drives these preferences will help librarians to figure out how to increase students’ use of ebooks. Design/methodology/approach Based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, researchers developed a model of ebook preference and a survey including constructs related to perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Respondents were undergraduate students from a core political science course at a large research university in the USA. Findings Ebook performance expectancy and ebook self-efficacy have indirect effects on ebook preference by way of ebook attitude. Ebook attitude and social influence both have direct effects. Research limitations/implications One of the limitation include respondents being of a similar age and having a similar experience of technology and ebooks. Prior use of ebooks may partially explain the results. Practical implications Librarians should help students develop ebook self-efficacy. Vendors should consider how interfaces may impact ebook self-efficacy. Ebook attitude may be positively influenced by tapping students’ desire to utilize technology. Originality/value This research adds to the understanding about ebook preference while expanding research in libraries by applying a theory and model from another research discipline.

Abstract:
Ebooks have enthusiastically been adopted by academic libraries, viewed as a golden bullet by library professionals, resulting in efficient resource use, space saving, student satisfaction and accommodating millennial generation study habits. A small-scale online survey undertaken at Northumbria and Durham Universities investigated students’ ebook use, examining aspects of learning ebooks support, searching strategies, devices used for ebook access, and reading and use strategies. Ninety-two responses were analysed using a mixed methods approach. Despite many advantages of ebooks including portability, availability, functionality and searching, results, demonstrated sentiment regarding ebooks was not wholly positive. There were frustrations regarding the complexity of ebook provision, publisher’s restrictions and the lack of compatibility with reading devices. A key finding related to ebook interrogation which involved greater targeted searching of content and a ‘bite-size’ approach to reading. Caution must be observed to ensure that library collections facilitate a complexity of learning styles, and provide opportunities for students to better digest content.

Abstract:
Background and aims Ebooks have become a ubiquitous presence in many classrooms today. Yet, empirical evidence on literacy development has not been well produced, especially for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This mixed-method case study aimed to explore how four children with ASD interact with ebooks and printed books with parents at home. Methods Four children (age 5–7 years) with ASD and their parents read one animated ebook and another printed book over four separate sessions. Parents also explained preselected word meanings to their children. In this mixed-method case study, we examined multiple quantitative and qualitative sources of evidence related to reading with parents at home. Results Quantitatively, all four children with ASD learned more word meanings from ebook than from the printed book, and three demonstrated a higher engagement with ebook than the printed book reading. Qualitatively, the majority of parents felt their children's engagement was higher with ebook than with printed book. Children with ASD tend to have tactile-related experiences while reading the printed book and auditory-related experiences during the ebook reading. Qualitative data also demonstrated a particular feature reported to be beneficial in previous research could be distracting for some children with ASD. Implications When parents are trained to explain critical word meanings to their children, animated ebooks can effectively improve the meaning-making skills of children with ASD. Findings also highlight the importance of individualized attention when choosing and using ebooks for children with ASD.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide ebook designers and researchers with design insights by promoting historical knowledge about books and reading as sources of ideas to implement in current and future ebooks. Design/methodology/approach The authors review historical features of books and practices of reading that have been implemented, weakened, or lost over time, referring to historical texts and resources, and relate them to ebook viewers (software) and readers (hardware) that are currently on the market. In particular, the review focuses on the physical form of the book and the practices of reading, annotation, and bookshelving. Findings While some older forms and reading practices have been implemented in ebook devices, others have been forgotten over time, due in part to physical constraints that are no longer relevant. The authors suggest that features that constrained print books and print reading in the past might actually improve the design of ebooks and e-reading in the present. Research limitations/implications This review is necessarily based on a limited set of existing historical sources. Practical implications Translating insights into novel tangible designs is always a challenging task. Ebook designers can gain insights from this paper that can be applied in a variety of design contexts. Originality/value No previous work on ebook design has foregrounded historical aspects of books and reading as viable sources of ideas to implement in ebooks.

Abstract:
Abstract There is a community of people in Lithuania who experience difficulties in reading printed books. When ebooks are scarce they are left without proper access to an important information source. Comparing the Lithuanian results with data from other contexts, we find that the availability of ebooks in Lithuania is scarcer than in other developed countries: they are from two to three times less available. Computer use and access to internet use in Lithuania over the past decade has increased by 20 per cent; however, access to ebooks grew at a slower pace. Analysis of the most popular books indicates that relatively few of them are available in ebook format, which suggests deliberate choices to promote printed books by restraining the release of ebook versions. From 2010 to 2019, on average, only 14 per cent of printed titles published were available in one of the ebook formats.

Abstract:

With the increasing amount of websites for digital literary Reading, has shown a clear need for a study focused in these tools. The research subject is the Portal Biblon , social network addressed to children users, which has to promote reading through literary narratives, adding users around the literary text. The research analyzes E-books´ graphic interfaces available on this website under the editorial design guidelines emphasized on the Child user´s experience. Based on interaction and editorial design, analyzes the main features of an E-book for children users. Applying the research methodology with qualitative approaching, it was noted that the Editorial Design´s elements work as inspirational parameters for reading and when an E-book is not designed taking into account the need of its target audience, it works as an opposite element of its function, that is, instead of encouraging the reading, causes frustration and a lack of interest in it.

Abstract:
The book ecosystem is radically changing, and libraries must change with it. This book tackles the controversial discussion about eBooks and explores librarian-driven solutions and visions for the future of libraries in the 21st century. The eBook Revolution: A Primer for Librarians on the Front Linesis exactly what its title promises: an essential resource for librarians facing the formidable task of coordinating the library-wide transition to eBooks and fielding questions from patrons about eBooks on a daily basis. After an introduction that covers the basics of eBooks and current eBook technology, the author puts things into perspective, documenting the changes that have occurred over the past decade. She also delves into important eBook issues, identifying librarian-driven solutions and providing glimpses of what libraries in the near future will likely be like. The book examines perennially critical issues such as accessibility, resource sharing, and the digital divide within the context of eBook technology and provides a clear framework for discussing eBooks, thereby enabling readers to make informed decisions regarding their own organizations.

Abstract:
Smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices have grown exponentially over the last two decades. In the past, people relied on reading paper books or newspapers to learn about the world around them but now have switched to reading from digital text files or the Internet. Consequently, the demand for eBooks has increased significantly. Traditional publishers are now confronted with publishing on the web due to this situation. eBook digital rights and copyright management has become a significant issue. To overcome this issue, we propose an efficient eBook Management system based on Blockchain to prevent piracy of eBooks, protect the digital rights management and stop copyright infringement.

Abstract:
This chapter examines how 19 emergent bilingual, 4-year-old students used digital composing skills to create dual language eBooks using touchscreen computer tablets (iPads) and digital photography, drawing, and eBook composing apps. The analyses focus on children's composing processes and products, adult supports, and participants' embodied interactions with the digital tools. Children approached eBook composing through naming, narrating, dramatic play and exploratory play. eBook texts were multimodal and included images, print, and oral recordings. Adult verbal scaffolding and gesture supported children's skills as digital composers. Children became active designers of digital content, independently navigating and experimenting with the multimodal functions of the iPad. Analyses showed how children used their heritage languages and English to compose dual language eBooks and support their emergent writing. The authors argue that children benefit from early opportunities to explore ways of combining print, images, sound, and multiple languages to create digital texts that effectively communicate across modalities and contexts.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to examine the use of the internet and eBook among students in public primary schools in Libya. The literature showed a lack of research that examines access to the Internet, students' awareness of eBook, and using the computer for learning at school. However, this type of research has been important in providing a better understanding of eBook usage and helping designers to create eBooks that meet user needs. Thus, the number of netizens determines the causes of use as a starting point for understanding and determining e- reading stages in order to investigate the factors that affect e- text reading among young people. This chapter presents the questionnaire data as analysed by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software for analysis and focuses on collecting quantitative data that can help build a clear understanding of current user behaviour. At the end of this chapter, these two objectives should be met: examining the use of Internet among students aged 9 to 13, and defining the awareness and aim of using eBook among students.

Abstract:
Since its publication in 1987, Gérard Genette's Paratexts has provided a productive means for engaging with those peripheral texts that frame, present, and bound a central work. However, advances in digital media and, in particular, the increasing prevalence of the ebook have altered or replaced many of the conventions outlined by Genette in Paratexts. This chapter explores these new paratextual conventions, employing case studies drawn from the “front lines” of the ebook revolution in concert with more recent scholarship in the field of paratextual studies. By examining the recent development of ebooks through the lens of the five paratextual dimensions outlined by Genette—spatial, temporal, substantial, pragmatic, and functional—this chapter argues that Paratexts continues to offer a crucial tool for the interpretation of texts in a new digital milieu.

Abstract:
For many years, librarians and industry experts predicted that electronic books would surpass print books as the format of preference. The advantages that digital books provide seemed to all but guarantee the demise of print. But something happened along the way. Numerous studies during the last decade have demonstrated that print still has a place for libraries, vendors and most importantly, end users. So what’s happened – why hasn’t that time come like it has for journals? And will the “tipping point” for books ever arrive? One explanation is that eBooks have not met user expectations, but optimizing user experience when users range from students, to faculty, to librarians is a big challenge! This session included a lively discussion about the user experience for eBooks from multiple perspectives. Gabrielle Wiersma from the University of Colorado Boulder shared findings from an eBook usability study with students and asked the audience to consider the reasons why people prefer one format over another. Two graduate students shared their perceptions and format preferences and answered questions from the audience. Finally, Leigh Beauchamp, Vice President of Product Development discussed how ProQuest is making patrons the center of Ebook Central platform development and how eBooks are evolving to bring the most important elements of the print experience to digital book research.

This will promote equity, diversity and the integration of migrant women. - Strengthen cooperation and creation of networks between academic organizations, the third sector and public administrations that are responsible for promoting the integration and inclusion of migrant women. - Promote dialogue and the exchange of knowledge to, firstly, raise awareness of human mobility and gender in Europe and, secondly, promote the participation and social, labor and civic integration of the migrant population. All this is developed through 4 areas in which this book is articulated. The first area entitled "Migrant women needs and successful integration interventions"; the second area entitled "Promoting University students awareness and civic and social responsibility towards migrant women integration"; the third area entitled "Cooperation between Higher Education institutions and third sector"; the fourth and last area, entitled "Inclusive Higher Education".
