Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis study analyzes the ethics of anthropocentrism contained in the animated film Princess Mononoke. The destruction of nature contained in the film is done by the antagonists, namely Miss Eboshi, Jiko-Bou, and their followers. The research method used is Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis which looks at three stages of significance, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. The stage of film analysis begins with identifying the form of oppression in the form of the selected scene, then the data is analyzed through the interpretation of denotative and connotative meanings to find myths. The results of this study indicate that this film represents the exploitation and ethics of anthropocentrism towards nature and the Shintoism gods who protect nature so that it triggers conflict between humans and the gods. The exploitation occurs because the antagonists want to conquer nature and the gods for personal interests and ambitions to gain profit and wealth without thinking about the ethics and moral status of nature, animals and non-humans in the film Princess Mononoke. Keywords: Anthropocentrism; Exploitation of nature; Animated Film; Princess Mononoke.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menganalisis etika antroposentrisme yang terdapat dalam film animasi Princess Mononoke. Abstract:
Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) lies at the apex of signal transduction cascades that results in induced destruction of joints in rheumatoid arthritis. It is therefore of great medicinal interest to modulate the cellular responses to TNF-α. Ebosin, a novel exopolysaccharide derived from Streptomyces sp, has been demonstrated to have remarkable therapeutic actions on collagen-induced arthritis in rats, while it also suppressed the production of IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 at both mRNA and protein levels in cultured fibroblast-like synoviocytes. In order to further understand the potential mechanisms involved in the anti-inflammatory effects of ebosin at molecular level, we investigated the impact of it on the activation of MAPK and NF-κB pathways following TNF-α induced in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS). The results showed that the phosphorylation levels of TNF-α-induced p38, JNK1, JNK2, IKKα, IKKβ, and IκB, as well as NF-κB nuclear translocation, were reduced significantly in FLS cells in response to ebosin. Furthermore, we proved that ebosin decreased the level of NF-κB in the nucleus and blocked the DNA-binding ability of NF-κB using electrophoresis mobility gel shift assay. Besides, low levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1 and MMP-3) and chemokines (interleukin-8 and RANTES) were found in TNF-α-stimulated fibroblast-like synoviocytes treated with ebosin. These results indicate that ebosin can suppress a range of activities in both MAPK and NF-κB pathways induced by TNF-α in rat fibroblast-like synoviocytes, which provides a rationale for examining the use of ebosin as a potential therapeutic candidate for rheumatic arthritis.

Abstract:
Gas flaring causes pollution to the environment and also affects the human organs such as the liver and kidneys. The present study seeks to investigate changes in liver, kidney function and atherogenic predictor indices of native women of Ebocha, Niger Delta, Nigeria who have over the years been chronically exposed to the persistent gas flaring in the area. Two hundred (200) healthy and freely consented women aged between 30 to 50 years were recruited; one hundred (100) from Ebocha and one hundred (100) from Uturu the control station. Results revealed that the values of serum activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate transferase (AST) alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and the concentrations of albumin and total protein were significantly (p<0.05) higher in Ebocha women when compared to values of women from Uturu. The pollution caused as a result of gas flaring did not affect the concentrations of bilirubin in women from both sites. However, serum creatinine, urea, K+, Na+, Cl- and HCO3-concentrations were significantly (p<0.05) higher in Ebocha women when compared to values for women from the control station. Ebocha women had significantly (p<0.05) reduced concentrations of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol but significantly (p<0.05) increased LDL-cholesterol and atherogenic predictor indices in comparison with those from Uturu indicating that chronic gas flaring has negative effects on the liver, renal function, lipid profile and atherogenic predictor indices of women resident in Ebocha. Abstract:
Poverty is a major menace in Nigeria. Therefore, the research centered on the analysis of poverty status of farming households in Ebonyi State. Multi stage and simple random sampling techniques were used to select 450 respondents for the study. Primary data were collected using electronic data capturing instrument containing the questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer and Thorbeecke (FGT), and Logit regression model. The result from the study shows that 54% of the farming households in Ebonyi state were poor while 46% of them were not poor. The result further reveals that household size, dependency ratio, sex, monthly household expenditure, and farm size were the significant factors that influenced poverty status of Ebonyi state farming households. Therefore, government at the federal, state and local levels should consider socioeconomic characteristics of the farming households in the design and implementation of any poverty driven projects in order to improve their standard of living. Also, government at the various level, should consider embarking on programs to address the youth unemployment and aged members of the Nigerian society for these will reduce the dependency burden which have continued to increase the poverty level in farming households in Ebonyi state.

Abstract:
The concept of child trafficking remains one of the quagmires facing Nigeria in recent times. This study, which was carried out in 2019, empirically examines the perceived effects of child trafficking on children in Ebonyi state of Nigeria. The objectives are to ascertain the different forms of child trafficking in Abakaliki urban of Ebonyi state; identify causes; determine the effect on the behaviour of the children, and suggest plausible ways of curbing the crime. The study employed an empirical survey. The population of the study which is 120,173 (NPC,2018) was extracted from Abakaliki Urban area and the sample size of the study which is 400 was computed using Taro Yamane statistic. Questionnaires and interviews were used as instruments for the gathering of data. Frequency tables/percentages were used to analyze the data as presented in this paper and to test the hypotheses of the study, the Chi-Square (X2) statistic was employed. The research reveals that child trafficking exists in Abakaliki urban of Ebonyi state. The research reveals further that the major causes of child trafficking in Abakaliki urban area of Ebonyi State are the quest for more income and greed. The research reveals further that child trafficking significantly affects the emotional state of children in Ebonyi state. With the proper measures put in places such as the creation of more job opportunities, persecution of offenders and proper monitoring of suspected cases of child trafficking, the case of child trafficking in the Abakaliki Urban Area can be curbed.

Abstract:
The intensive use of Eboni has caused a decrease of its natural population which has also contributed to the future loss of genetic potencies. Preservation efforts could only be conducted if the actual potencies of the stand and its environmental conditions were recognized. A study on stand and regeneration potencies as well as its soil characteristics is needed as a basic in management aplication for the increase of genetic potencies. This study used a systematic sampling survey method and laboratory analysis. The study aims to identify tree potencies and regeneration of Eboni Makassar as well as its soil characteristics under the stand. The results are expected to provide a description on Eboni Makassar potencies and its management efforts. It was found from the study that the potency of Eboni was 5.013 m3/ha with minimum and maximum estimated volumes of 3.163 m3/ha and 6.863 m3/ha, respectively. Eboni was naturally regenerated better in >40% slope category. Keywords: Eboni, Potencies and Regeneration, Various Slope

Abstract:
The study comparatively analyzed the general physico-chemical parameters of five different water bodies to assess their suitability for fish production. Four water bodies (Enyigba, Mkpuma, Ameka and Ebonyi) close to quarry sites were selected while the fifth was a culture pond water which served as the control experiment. The water parameters: pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), free CO2 and transparency were examined using standard methods for 24 months. The results showed that the pattern of temperature variation in all the water bodies examined followed a similar trend with the lowest value observed between December and January. The pond water showed slightly varied pH levels compared to the natural water bodies. The DO contents of Ebonyi, Mkpuma and Enyigba were higher than those recorded from Ameke and pond. Relatively, lower concentrations of free CO2 were recorded in the pond water and Ebonyi river during the harmattan period (December to January) and below the detectable levels. The variation of Sechi disc depth was higher in Enyigba when compared with other water bodies all through the period of the experiment. The trend of transparency was the same in all the water bodies.

Abstract:
A study optimising maintenance cost of water borehole schemes in South Eastern states of Nigeria (Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States) was carried out. Data was collected from 260 boreholes spread across all local government areas in the states. Optimisation results showed that for boreholes (submersible pumps) pumping once per day, the optimal preventive maintenance frequency and resulting savings in cost are 2 and ₦521,076 for Abia; 2 and ₦783,963 for Anambra; 2 and ₦458,242 for Ebonyi; 2 and ₦740,964 for Enugu; 2 and ₦605,187 Imo. For boreholes pumping twice per day, the optimal preventive maintenance frequency and resulting savings in cost are 5 and ₦1,896,301 for Abia; 4 and ₦3,692,655 for Anambra; 5 and ₦786,913 for Ebonyi; 4 and ₦4,187,161 for Enugu; 4 and ₦2,477,609 for Imo; and for boreholes pumping thrice per day; 8 and ₦2,798,330 for Abia; 7 and ₦8,372,862 for Anambra; 7 and ₦6,485,293 for Ebonyi; 10 and ₦4,014,240 for Enugu; 10 and ₦6,021,503 for Imo; with no downtime as opposed to the wasteful current practice of no preventive maintenance with downtime of up to 12 months or more. As a recommendation for a borehole scheme, there should be a check on the type of submersible pump and generator capacity as the choice made directly affects the total operational cost.
