Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis study analyzes the ethics of anthropocentrism contained in the animated film Princess Mononoke. The destruction of nature contained in the film is done by the antagonists, namely Miss Eboshi, Jiko-Bou, and their followers. The research method used is Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis which looks at three stages of significance, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. The stage of film analysis begins with identifying the form of oppression in the form of the selected scene, then the data is analyzed through the interpretation of denotative and connotative meanings to find myths. The results of this study indicate that this film represents the exploitation and ethics of anthropocentrism towards nature and the Shintoism gods who protect nature so that it triggers conflict between humans and the gods. The exploitation occurs because the antagonists want to conquer nature and the gods for personal interests and ambitions to gain profit and wealth without thinking about the ethics and moral status of nature, animals and non-humans in the film Princess Mononoke. Keywords: Anthropocentrism; Exploitation of nature; Animated Film; Princess Mononoke.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menganalisis etika antroposentrisme yang terdapat dalam film animasi Princess Mononoke.

Abstract:
Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) lies at the apex of signal transduction cascades that results in induced destruction of joints in rheumatoid arthritis. It is therefore of great medicinal interest to modulate the cellular responses to TNF-α. Ebosin, a novel exopolysaccharide derived from Streptomyces sp, has been demonstrated to have remarkable therapeutic actions on collagen-induced arthritis in rats, while it also suppressed the production of IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 at both mRNA and protein levels in cultured fibroblast-like synoviocytes. In order to further understand the potential mechanisms involved in the anti-inflammatory effects of ebosin at molecular level, we investigated the impact of it on the activation of MAPK and NF-κB pathways following TNF-α induced in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS). The results showed that the phosphorylation levels of TNF-α-induced p38, JNK1, JNK2, IKKα, IKKβ, and IκB, as well as NF-κB nuclear translocation, were reduced significantly in FLS cells in response to ebosin. Furthermore, we proved that ebosin decreased the level of NF-κB in the nucleus and blocked the DNA-binding ability of NF-κB using electrophoresis mobility gel shift assay. Besides, low levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1 and MMP-3) and chemokines (interleukin-8 and RANTES) were found in TNF-α-stimulated fibroblast-like synoviocytes treated with ebosin. These results indicate that ebosin can suppress a range of activities in both MAPK and NF-κB pathways induced by TNF-α in rat fibroblast-like synoviocytes, which provides a rationale for examining the use of ebosin as a potential therapeutic candidate for rheumatic arthritis.

Abstract:
Gas flaring causes pollution to the environment and also affects the human organs such as the liver and kidneys. The present study seeks to investigate changes in liver, kidney function and atherogenic predictor indices of native women of Ebocha, Niger Delta, Nigeria who have over the years been chronically exposed to the persistent gas flaring in the area. Two hundred (200) healthy and freely consented women aged between 30 to 50 years were recruited; one hundred (100) from Ebocha and one hundred (100) from Uturu the control station. Results revealed that the values of serum activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate transferase (AST) alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and the concentrations of albumin and total protein were significantly (p<0.05) higher in Ebocha women when compared to values of women from Uturu. The pollution caused as a result of gas flaring did not affect the concentrations of bilirubin in women from both sites. However, serum creatinine, urea, K+, Na+, Cl- and HCO3-concentrations were significantly (p<0.05) higher in Ebocha women when compared to values for women from the control station. Ebocha women had significantly (p<0.05) reduced concentrations of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol but significantly (p<0.05) increased LDL-cholesterol and atherogenic predictor indices in comparison with those from Uturu indicating that chronic gas flaring has negative effects on the liver, renal function, lipid profile and atherogenic predictor indices of women resident in Ebocha. Abstract:
Poverty is a major menace in Nigeria. Therefore, the research centered on the analysis of poverty status of farming households in Ebonyi State. Multi stage and simple random sampling techniques were used to select 450 respondents for the study. Primary data were collected using electronic data capturing instrument containing the questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer and Thorbeecke (FGT), and Logit regression model. The result from the study shows that 54% of the farming households in Ebonyi state were poor while 46% of them were not poor. The result further reveals that household size, dependency ratio, sex, monthly household expenditure, and farm size were the significant factors that influenced poverty status of Ebonyi state farming households. Therefore, government at the federal, state and local levels should consider socioeconomic characteristics of the farming households in the design and implementation of any poverty driven projects in order to improve their standard of living. Also, government at the various level, should consider embarking on programs to address the youth unemployment and aged members of the Nigerian society for these will reduce the dependency burden which have continued to increase the poverty level in farming households in Ebonyi state.

Abstract:
The study comparatively analyzed the general physico-chemical parameters of five different water bodies to assess their suitability for fish production. Four water bodies (Enyigba, Mkpuma, Ameka and Ebonyi) close to quarry sites were selected while the fifth was a culture pond water which served as the control experiment. The water parameters: pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), free CO2 and transparency were examined using standard methods for 24 months. The results showed that the pattern of temperature variation in all the water bodies examined followed a similar trend with the lowest value observed between December and January. The pond water showed slightly varied pH levels compared to the natural water bodies. The DO contents of Ebonyi, Mkpuma and Enyigba were higher than those recorded from Ameke and pond. Relatively, lower concentrations of free CO2 were recorded in the pond water and Ebonyi river during the harmattan period (December to January) and below the detectable levels. The variation of Sechi disc depth was higher in Enyigba when compared with other water bodies all through the period of the experiment. The trend of transparency was the same in all the water bodies. Abstract:
Waste management has become a common issue of discourse among individuals, groups and governments. This study which assessed urban solid waste management in Ebonyi state with focus on Abakaliki urban specifically sought to find out why indiscriminate solid waste disposal/dumps has persisted in Abakaliki urban, investigate the measures put in place to curtail the tide and ascertain the extent to which indiscriminate waste disposal affects people’s health and environment. Four null hypotheses were formulated and Human Capital Theory was adopted as the theoretical framework. The study used survey design whereby data were collected from the sample considered to be representative of the population. Taro Yameni’s formula was applied to reduce the initial population of 116,987 to a smaller researchable size of 399 while data were collected through structured questionnaire. The data collected were presented in tables containing frequencies of the responses and their corresponding percentages. The four hypotheses of the study were tested using chi-square (X2) statistical tool and the result of the analyses revealed that: there is currently no government approved dumpsites in Abakaliki metropolis, most communicable diseases are contracted from dirty environment, among others. The implications are that most households will soon be cut off by flood arising from the blockage of water channels, some streets and roads will be blocked by heaps of wastes and more epidemics will be contracted by the people if nothing urgent was done. The study concluded that, the Ebonyi State Environmental Protection Agency (EBSEPA) currently have no required manpower, technical skills and competences to curtail the tide of waste and therefore made the following recommendations: Ebonyi state government should strengthen the already established departments of Environmental and Health Sciences in Ebonyi State University (EBSU) and the School of Health Technology, Ezzamgbo, by providing and equipping them with modern waste management equipment for students to be exposed to practical methods of waste management, Government should contract foreign-based private firm through Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangement to establish waste management industry in Ebonyi state, immediate provision of permanent waste dumpsites by the government, among others.

Abstract:
Ebosin, a novel exopolysaccharide produced by Streptomyces sp. 139, has remarkable anti-rheumatoid arthritis activity in vivo and its biosynthesis gene cluster (ste) consists of 27 ORFs (open reading frames). The present paper reports our study of the protein product encoded by ste27. Database searching reveals the homology of Ste27 with some spermidine/spermine acetyltransferases. To confirm the prediction, the ste27 gene was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) cells and recombinant Ste27 was purified. The following enzymatic analysis revealed its ability of transferring the acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to spermidine and spermine, with spermidine being the preferred substrate. Ste27 can acetylate the N1, N4 and N8 positions on spermidine. The Km values of Ste27 were determined for spermidine and spermine, as well as for acetyl-CoA, poly-L-lysine and glucosamine 6-phosphate. Upon gene knockout, the exopolysaccharide-27m produced by the mutant strain Streptomyces sp. 139 (ste27−), compared with Ebosin, exhibited a significantly reduced binding activity to the interleukin-1 receptor. After gene complementation, the binding activity was partially restored. This demonstrated that the ste27 gene is involved in the biosynthesis of Ebosin. Molecular modelling was also carried out to predict the binding mode of Ste27 with acetyl-CoA, spermidine or spermine.

Abstract:
The study analyzed the lipids of catfish, (Clarias albopunctatus) from four rivers (Mkpuma, Amaka, Enyigba and Ebonyi) in Ebonyi State. Fishes were harvested, weighed and sacrificed and the gill tissues were collected and used for the extraction of lipid for the analysis. All extracted lipids were homogenized in a chloroform-methanol solution using standard procedure. After extraction, lipids were resolved and analyzed differently while simple correlation was used to analyze the data collected. Results showed that there were varying levels of lipid composition among the catfish samples from the different rivers. Results further revealed the correlation between triglyceride (TG) and other lipids to be only significant for phosphatidylcholine (PC) (r=0.818, p<0.05). Although TG had moderate correlation with sphingomyelin (SM), the correlation was not significant (r=0.701, p>0.05). Free fatty acid (FFA) had strong positive significant correlation with cholesterol (CHO) (r=0.981, p<0.01); sphingomyelin (SM) (r=0.949, p<0.01) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) (r=0.886, p<0.01). However, moderate correlation with no significant difference (0.631, p>0.05) was observed with phosphatidylcholine (PC). Cholesterol also had strong positive correlation with SM and PE and insignificant correlation with PC while a strong positive correlation was observed between SM and PC (r=0.828, p<0.01). The lens galaxies are luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at redshift 0.4 < z < 0.8, and the source galaxies are LAEs at redshift 2 < z < 3. The spectral resolution of eBOSS (∼2000) allows us to further identify the fine structures of Lyman-α ($\rm Ly\alpha$) emissions. Among our lensed LAE candidates, 281 systems present single-peaked line profiles while 80 systems show double-peaked features. Future spectroscopic/imaging follow-up observations of the catalogue may shed light on the origin of diverse $\rm Ly\alpha$ line morphology, and provide promising labs for studying low-mass dark matter haloes/subhaloes.

Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between teachers teaching experience, attitude, classroom interaction pattern and student’s academic achievement of science students in public secondary secondary school in Ebonyi State. This research adopted the expost facto research design. The population for this study consisted of teachers teaching science in senior secondary classes. A sample of 100 sechools were chosen for the study using stratified random sampling technique, the basis of stratification being the 3 senatorial zones of the state. 33 public schools were selected from Ebonyi south and Ebonyi north and 34 from Ebonyi central. Three instruments were used to collect data, The FIAC, the science teachers variable questionnaire (STVQ) and science subject achievement test (SSAT). The hypothesis was posited for the study and was analyzed using 0.05 alpha level of significant. Hypothesis one was tested using one way analysis of variance and Pearson product moment correlation was used to test hypothesis two and three respectively. The result of hypothesis one show a significant f-ratio for 1/D (F = 4.556 p < 0.05) and insignificant f-ratio of 1.529 D/st ratio. Given the sig fration of 1/D ratio, the result of LCD that teachers with 6 – 10 yrs has high. 1/D ratio than all other teachers while those with 21 yrs of experience was insignificant. The result of hypothesis two shows that 0.00 r value for 1/D ratio and r = 0.18 D/st ratio. This indicates no significant relation between teachers attitude and their classroom interaction pattern. On hypothesis three the result indicates positive relationship between achievement in science and classroom interaction with 1/D (r = 0.19) and D/st ratio (r = 0.39) the critical value rc = 0.19. Findings revealed that teaching experience has a lot to do with classroom interaction pattern which is positively related to students academic achievement and not science teachers attitude has no relationship with their classroom interaction pattern. This paper concluded that most teachers use direct teaching method whereas some science subjects curriculum content requires both direct and indirect teaching method. Nevertheless, science teachers should use more of indirect teaching methods because science is an activity based subject.

Abstract:
The study analysed the multifactor productivity among smallholder yam farmers in Ebonyi South, Ebonyi North and Ebonyi Central Agricultural zones of the State. The specific objectives were to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the yam farmers in the study area, to analyse the multifactor productivity and scale of production among smallholder yam farmers, to determine the factors affecting multifactor productivity among smallholder yam farmers and identify constraints of increased yam production in the study area. Two-stage random sampling technique was used to select one hundred and twenty (120) yam farmers from areas of intense yam cultivation in the three zones. Cobb-Douglas production function was used to analyse individual factor productivity and scale of production in yam enterprise. The results revealed that coefficient of farm size, hired labour, household size and planting materials, would reduce multifactor productivity of yam farms by 8.6 %, 1.05 %, 2.2 % and 0.45 %, respectively. The results also showed that 10 % increase in age, income, credit access and experience would increase multifactor productivity of yam farms by 0.071 %, 0.133 %, 0.543 % and 0.139 %, respectively. The R2 values of 0.864 implies that about 86 % of variations in multifactor productivity in yam enterprises are explained by the explanatory variables in the model. The problems identified include inadequate land, finance, high transportation cost, hired labour, pests and diseases, bad infrastructure, network, inadequate storage facilities, etc. The results of the study expressed the need of active policies aimed at intensifying extension services, encouraging farm mechanization and provision of credits at subsidized rate in the state.

Abstract:
The study examined teachers perceptions on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) devices for instructional delivery in secondary schools in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Four research questions guided the study. The population of the study comprised of all the three thousand two hundred and eighty-five (3,285) teacher in the two hundred and twenty-one (221) public secondary schools in Ebonyi State. Simple random sampling technique was used to select (8) teachers each from ninety schools used for the study to give a sample of seven hundred and twenty (720) respondents. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire. Pearson’s Moment Correlation Co-efficient was used to calculate the reliability co-efficient of the pilot tests to get established reliability value of 0.79. The data collected were analysed using mean scores. It was found among other things that ICT devices are not adequately available, most available ICT devices are not in good working condition in schools studied, hence they are not adequately used and above all trained personnel are not also adequately available to operate the functional ones. Government through her appropriate agencies should as a matter of urgency procure and distribute the necessary ICT devices to secondary schools, more trained personnel should be recruited but for the interim the available ones could be retrained through short term holiday programmes, workshops and conferences to ensure adequate use and maintenance of these ICT devices as this will go a long way in improving instructional delivery in Ebonyi State Secondary Schools.

Abstract:
The study examined the activities of the Ebonyi State Community Based Social Development Agency (EB-CSDA), particularly on poverty reduction in the rural communities of Ebonyi State. Survey and content Analytical Approach were adopted. Data were extensively drawn from documentary papers, publications, oral interviews, direct observation and the use of structured questionnaire distributed to 400 sampled respondents from rural communities in the 13 LGAs of the State. Findings reveal that despite efforts of successive governments aimed at reducing poverty, the scourge has remained pervasive. EB-CSDA however, is rated high in the provision of micro-projects to the rural communities but its approach is group- targeted rather than on the individual poor. Consequently, the paper recommends among others that adequate background studies should be undertaken to understand the demographic characteristics of the rural communities to enable development agencies target their efforts on the real poor based on sufficient needs assessments of recipients.

Abstract:
In this study, the concentrations of inducers of environmental toxicity such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and biomarkers of environmental toxicants such as oxidative stress enzymes/compounds and liver function enzymes were determined. These parameters were used to assess the pollution status of some Niger-Delta areas; Ebocha/Omoku, Abacheke/Egbema, and Okwuzi/Ohaji, with the aid of two indicator species: cat fish (Ictalurus punctatus) and snakehead fish (Channa argus) from three different water sources; Ebocha/Omoku river, Abacheke river and Okwuzi creek all of which are within the area of oil exploration and production activities in Nigeria. The control fish and water samples were collected from Otamiri River within the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria, with no known oil exploration and production activity. The results obtained indicated significant (p < 0.05) differences between the exploited and the unexploited environment and the need to incorporate biochemical markers in environmental impact assessment of aquatic environments to complements the classical chemical monitoring.

Abstract:
This study looks at how using special courts can provide succor to the plight of awaiting trial inmates in Ebonyi state, Nigeria. The study adopted quantitative and qualitative research methods, with a sample of 1,498 respondents comprising 617 police officers, 623 awaiting-trial inmates, 113 court staff, and 145 prison officers drawn from Ebonyi State. Purposive and Multi-stage sampling techniques were used to reach the respondents. The quantitative data was descriptively analyzed using percentages and charts, while a thematic method of analysis was employed in the qualitative data. The findings revealed that, while there has been an uptick in awaiting trial problems, there is no meaningful provision to address them, despite the existence of provisions within the Nigerian legal framework. The article calls for the creation of special courts that are equipped to address peculiar crime cases in a more effective and faster manner. These courts are better poised to address the peculiarities of special cases and pass better and faster judgments.

Abstract:
The novel SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, a pandemic of great public health concern. COVID-19 was fi rst reported in Wuhan, China in December, 2019 and declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. The fi rst case of COVID-19 in Nigeria was confi rmed on the 27th of February, 2020 and has since spread to 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, bringing total confi rmed cases in Nigeria to 25,694, 9,746 recoveries and 590 deaths as at 30th June, 2020. This was therefore designed to examine the impact of the lockdowns and border closures of states on the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the fi ve states of South Eastern, Nigeria. COVID-19 data of the fi ve South Eastern States of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo between April 1st and 30th June were retrieved from the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) microsites and analyzed using GraphPad software, Version 5.01. Results showed that the South Eastern states recorded a total of 1,415 COVID-19 cases between April when all the fi ve states had their fi rst cases and June, 30th with Ebonyi with a total of 438(31.0%) producing the highest confi rmed cases. The highest rate of infection was observed in the month of June with Ebonyi recording the highest (28.1%), followed by Abia and Imo with 21.2% and 20.9% respectively. The use of face masks, social distancing, community lockdown and other containment measures are necessary to prevent further upsurge in the rate COVID-19 infection in the South East, and indeed the whole Nigeria.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We study the modelling of the halo occupation distribution (HOD) for the eBOSS DR16 emission line galaxies (ELGs). Motivated by previous theoretical and observational studies, we consider different physical effects that can change how ELGs populate haloes. We explore the shape of the average HOD, the fraction of satellite galaxies, their probability distribution function (PDF), and their density and velocity profiles. Our baseline HOD shape was fitted to a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and evolution, with a decaying occupation of central ELGs at high halo masses. We consider Poisson and sub/super-Poissonian PDFs for satellite assignment. We model both Navarro–Frenk–White and particle profiles for satellite positions, also allowing for decreased concentrations. We model velocities with the virial theorem and particle velocity distributions. Additionally, we introduce a velocity bias and a net infall velocity. We study how these choices impact the clustering statistics while keeping the number density and bias fixed to that from eBOSS ELGs. The projected correlation function, wp, captures most of the effects from the PDF and satellites profile. The quadrupole, ξ2, captures most of the effects coming from the velocity profile. We find that the impact of the mean HOD shape is subdominant relative to the rest of choices. We fit the clustering of the eBOSS DR16 ELG data under different combinations of the above assumptions. The catalogues presented here have been analysed in companion papers, showing that eBOSS RSD+BAO measurements are insensitive to the details of galaxy physics considered here. These catalogues are made publicly available.

ABSTRACT We analyse the anisotropic clustering of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) Luminous Red Galaxy Data Release 14 (DR14) sample combined with Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) CMASS sample of galaxies in the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1.0, which consists of 80 118 galaxies from eBOSS and 46 439 galaxies from the BOSS-CMASS sample. The eBOSS-CMASS Luminous Red Galaxy sample has a sky coverage of 1844 deg2, with an effective volume of 0.9 Gpc3. The analysis was made in configuration space using a Legendre multipole expansion. The Redshift Space Distortion signal is modelled as a combination of the Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Model and the Gaussian Streaming Model. We constrain the logarithmic growth of structure times the amplitude of dark matter density fluctuations, f(zeff)σ8(zeff) = 0.454 ± 0.134, and the Alcock-Paczynski dilation scales which constraints the angular diameter distance $D_A(z_{\mathrm{ eff}})=1466.5 \pm 133.2 (r_s/r_s^{\rm fid})$ and $H(z_{\rm eff})=105.8 \pm 15.7 (r_s^{\rm fid}/r_s) \mathrm{km\, s^{-1}\, Mpc^{-1}}$, where rs is the sound horizon at the end of the baryon drag epoch and $r_s^{\rm fid}$ is its value in the fiducial cosmology at an effective redshift zeff = 0.72. These results are in full agreement with the current Λ-Cold Dark Matter (Λ-CDM) cosmological model inferred from Planck measurements. This study is the first eBOSS LRG full-shape analysis i.e. including Redshift Space Distortions simultaneously with the Alcock-Paczynski effect and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation scale.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Death is an inevitable end that comes when not expected. However, when death occurs as a result of violence or unclear and suspicious manner, a coroner inquest is instituted to determine the cause, manner and the mechanism of death. AIM: To determine the incidence and causes of medicolegal death in Ebonyi State. MATERIALS & METHOD: This is a 5-year retrospective study of medicolegal autopsies reports of subjects whose cause of death were subject of litigation. The study analysed data between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2017, at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Ebonyi, Southeast, Nigeria. Data analysis was with the SPSS version 20. RESULTS: During the study period. A total number of 202 autopsies were performed. The age range of the deceased was from 2 years to 90 years, with a mean age of 35.2 ± 16.1. The predominant age group was 30 - 39 years (30.2%) while the least (0.5%) were between the age of 90 and 99 years. Males accounted for 158 (78.2%), and females were 44 (21.8%). Farmers (31.2%) and students (15.3%) were mostly affected by unnatural death in this study. Accidental deaths constituted 54.5% of cases, followed by homicidal death (36.6%). Impalement by sharp objects (41.9%) was a significant cause of death due to homicide in this study. In contrast, accidental deaths were mainly as a result of a road traffic accident (95.5%). The majority (60.4%) of those who died as a result of an accident sustained an injury at multiple body sites. CONCLUSION: Road traffic accident and homicide were responsible for the majority of cause of death found in medicolegal autopsies in Ebonyi State. Proper road maintenance, safe driving culture, and making people adhere strictly to the rule of law are necessary to reduce the incidence of avoidable deaths in our environment.

Background: Miners and the people living close to mining sites are exposed to elevated levels of ionizing radiation with or without their knowledge. This study was designed to evaluate the outdoor background radiation levels in some selected mining locations and major activity areas of Ebonyi State, South-Eastern, Nigeria and their radiological impacts. Materials and Methods: The levels of background radiation in these mining areas were estimated using a well calibrated International Medicom CRM-100 Digital Radiation Monitor (survey meter). A cross-sectional survey was adopted for this study. Based on standard method, the radiation monitor was held at a distance of 1.0 meters above the ground and three readings taken at each location and the mean recorded. The radiation dose rates were calculated. A descriptive statistic and inferential statistic were used to summarize the data using statistical package for social Sciences SPSS version 21. Results: The mean dose rate for all the mining locations studied is 0.269+0.039(µSv/hr) and OAEDR of 0.470+0.068(mSv/yr). The excess life cancer risk for adult and children are 1.645 x 10-3 and 1.175 x 10-3 in the mining areas respectively. The mean outdoor Annual Equivalent Dose Rate (OAEDR) for the mining locations of Ebonyi States was 0.470±0.068 and mean of the radiation dose values recommended by UNSCEAR (2008) was 2.4± 0.48. There was statistically significance mean difference between the mean of OAEDR and the UNCEAR recommended value (p = 0.001). Conclusion: the outdoor background radiation levels emitted from the study area are within permissible limits for the general population. Therefore there is little risk of instantaneous radiation hazard within the mining areas of Ebonyi State. Key words: Absorb dose, excess life Cancer risk, radiation hazard.

Abstract:
This study examined the determinants of voter behaviour in the 2015 gubernatorial elections in Nigeria with particular attention to Ebonyi State. The cardinal objective of the paper is to identify the factors affecting voter behaviour in recent times in Nigerian elections. Experimental survey design was adopted in the study. Data were elicited from both primary and secondary sources and was analyzed using content, percentage and Chi-square statistical tools. The paper revealed among the other things that gratification and party affiliations significantly influenced voter behaviour during the 2015 gubernatorial elections in Nigeria especially in Ebonyi State. It therefore recommends inter alia; that voters should be enlightened further by relevant agencies in Nigeria on the choice of candidate(s) based on party manifestoes, policy and programmes rather than heavy dependence on gratification. Implication of this finding for Nigerian citizenry is that it is only through voting of candidate in an election on the basis of lined-up policies and programmes that can bring about popular choice of candidate that would eventually deliver the democratic dividends to the citizenry.

Abstract:
Background. The changing epidemiology of methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus(MRSA) from a hospital-associated pathogen to an organism commonly found in the community and in livestock reflects an organism well-equipped to survive in diverse environments and adjust to different environmental conditions including antimicrobial use.Methods. We investigated the molecular epidemiology ofS. aureusand MRSA in poultry in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Samples were collected from 1800 birds on 9 different farms within the state. Positive isolates were tested for antibiotic susceptibility and molecular typing.Results. Prevalence in birds was 13.7% (247/1800). MRSA prevalence in poultry was 0.8%. The prevalence of MRSA in broilers and layers was 1.2% and 0.4%, respectively. All tested isolates were susceptible to vancomycin. Molecular analysis of the isolates revealed 3spatypes: t002, t084, and a novelspatype, t11469. The novelspatype t11469 belonged to sequence type ST5.Conclusion. The detection of t002 in chicken suggests the presence of livestock-associated MRSA in poultry in Ebonyi State. The detection of the newspatype t11469 in poultry that has not been characterised to ascertain its pathogenic potential remains a cause for concern, especially as some were found to carry PVL genes, a putative virulence factor in staphylococcal infection.

Abstract:
This study examined the demographic factors influencing the level of drug abuse among undergraduates of Ebonyi State University. To achieve this, three objectives and corresponding research questions were posed and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at. 05 level of significance. The study design was a descriptive cross-sectional survey. A sample of 943 students was drawn from a population of 18859 students. The instrument for data collection was a three-item questionnaire titled: Level of Drug Abuse Survey questionnaire (LDASQ) with a reliability coefficient of 0.93. Data were analyzed using Frequency, Percentage and chi-square statistic. The results of the study showed among others, that more males (56.7%) than females (35.2%) abused drugs. There was significant association between student gender and level of drug abuse among university students in Ebonyi state. It was recommended among others that the Ministry of Education (Federal and State) must as a matter of urgency add to their curricular drug education for both the primary and secondary schools to enable students understand the adverse effect of drug abuse and as well develop attitude that will help them resist the temptation to abuse drugs even as they enter into high institutions.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Studies indicate that HIV/AIDS has become one of the leading causes of death Worldwide since it was discovered over 30 years ago. The virus has challenged medical solutions and it poses serious socio-economic challenges to most African countries and Ebonyi state in Nigeria in particular. However, the relationship between the behavioural pattern of HIV/AIDS patients, population growth and economic development has not been established in Ebonyi state. Therefore, the study aims to determine the socio-economic impact of HIV/AIDS on population growth and economic development in Ebonyi state, Nigeria. METHOD: Survey research approach was adopted and information was generated from primary sources. The information was subjected to rigorous content and validity analysis to establish their consistency and reliability. Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) was selected for the study due to the strategic location of the institution. 210 HIV/AIDS patients were selected randomly and the descriptive method of data analysis was used. Reported HIV/AIDS cases in the hospital between 2010 and 2014 were 2583. RESULTS: Findings revealed that 61.9% of those living with the virus are female and the rest male, while 76.2% have tertiary education, 71.9% are between 26 to 64 years old, 46.2% are single, 56.7% contracted it through sexual intercourse, 94.3% have been living with it for between 1-8 years, 71.4% engage in unprotected sexual intercourse since they contracted it while 85.3% are desirous of transmitting the virus to others before they die. The spread of the virus is associated with causal/unprotected sexual habits, poverty induced prostitution, indecent dressing, uncontrolled access to social network and improper use of condom. CONCLUSION: The study reveals a strong relationship between HIV/AIDS, economic development and population growth and recommends establishment of special task force to check indecent/offensive dressing, attitudinal/behavioural change/modification of the patients and control on the use of social network by the youth as measures to check the further spread of the virus in the state.
