Abstract:
Field experiments were conducted during rabi 92, summer 93 and kharif 93 to evaluate anilofos 50 EC residues in transplanted rice. The treatments constituted anilofos 50 EC at 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 kg/ha and anilofos 30 EC at 0.4 kg/ha. The residues of anilofos in soil and plant samples were analysed using HPLC and the results revealed that the soil residues of anilofos were degraded within 56 days at 0.2 kg/ha, within harvest at 0.4 kg/ha and beyond harvest at 0.8 kg/ha respectively. The anilofos residues were at detectable levels in rice grain and straw at 0.8 kg/ha of anilofos 50 EC which again were below the Maximum Residue Limits.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, mortality and morbidity of complications due to chronic otitis media (COM). During the nine-year period 1990–1999, 2890 cases of COM were reviewed, 93 (3.22 per cent) having 57 (1.97 per cent) intracranial complications (IC) and 39 (1.35 per cent) extracranial complications (EC). In three patients more than one complication was observed. Meningitis and brain abscess were common in the IC group. Subperiosteal abscess (mastoid and Bezold’s abscess) was a common complication in the EC group. Cholesteatoma and granulation/polyp in the middle ear/mastoid were the major findings in both groups. Fifteen patients died from IC. Overall, the mortality rate was 16.1 per cent in all patients having complications, and in patients with IC it was 26.3 per cent. In all of the patients with complications, the morbidity rate was 11.8 per cent. Our study supports the finding that meningitis and brain abscess are the common complications of COM and the main reason for mortality.

Abstract:
Directive 2007/47/EC of the European Parliament amending Medical Device Directive (MDD) provides medical device manufacturers with a compliance framework. However, the effects of the amendments to the MDD on competition in the U.S. medical device software industry are unknown. This study examined the impact of this directive on the competitiveness of U.S. medical device software companies, the safety and efficacy of medical device software, employee training, and recruitment. The conceptual framework for this study included 3 dimensions of medical device regulations: safety, performance, and reliability. The overall research design was a concurrent mixed method study using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The qualitative techniques involved case studies of 5 purposively selected companies. Data collection involved both surveys and interviews. The sample consisted of 56 employees within medical device firms with markets around the European regions. Qualitative data analysis consisted of descriptive thematic analysis along the study questions and hypotheses and summative evaluation. Quantitative data analysis included descriptive statistics and correlation to test the 4 hypotheses. The results suggested that the MDD has realigned medical device software manufacturing practices, and US medical device companies have gained global competitiveness in improving product safety and increasing sales revenue. Key recommendations to medical device manufacturers include adopting MDD 93/42/EEC, using model-based approaches, and being comprehensive in model use. Adopting the MDD will provide positive social change to patients, as human safety improves with better product quality while companies experience fewer product recalls.

Abstract Designation Of Origin See Intellectual Property Rights Whereas Art. 90 EC prohibits discriminatory taxation of products from other Member States and Art. 93 EC provides a specific legal basis for indirect tax harmonization, there are no equivalent provisions on direct taxation, i.e. the taxation of the income and capital of natural and legal persons. The EC Treaty merely provides, in Art. 293, that Member States shall, in so far as is necessary, enter into negotiations with each other with a view to securing the abolition of double taxation within the Community for the benefit of their nationals. Nevertheless, in so far as rules on direct taxation may ‘directly affect the establishment or functioning of the common market’, they may be the subject of approximating directives adopted under Art. 94 EC (fiscal provisions are excluded from the scope of Art. 95(1) EC by Art. 95(2) EC).

Abstract:
Abstract In 1975 the name cathepsin S was given to a cysteine peptidase purified from bovine lymph nodes by Turnsek and co-workers [402] and in 1981 from spleen by Locnikar et a!. [355]. The enzyme showed similarities to cathepsin L, but differed in a number of respects, including pl, Mn pH stability, activity against synthetic substrates and sensitivity to inhibitors, as shown by Kirschke and Bromme and co-workers, 1984-1989 [93, 170, 172, 346]. In 1991 studies on the amino acid sequences by Ritonja et al. and \'viederanders and co-workers [1190, 1213] confirmed that cathepsins S and L are different enzymes. The name cathepsin S (EC 3.4.22.27) was recommended by the nomenclature committee of International Cnion of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) in 1992. Cathepsin S is one of the lysosomal cysteine proteinases known so far to show a restricted tissue distribution. The highest levels have been detected in spleen, sessile lung macrophages and heart [34, 172,295,346, 1141, 1195], but the occurrence of the enzyme has also been described in ileum, brain, thyroid and ovary [1180]. Cathepsin S has been shown to be preferentially expressed in cells of mononuclear-phagocytic origin [1710] and overexpressed in cortical neurones and glia in samples of brain from patients with Alzheimer's disease [1684]. Cells doubly transfected with both p-amyloid precursor protein and cathepsin S, but not with the other cathepsins, secreted high levels of amyloid p-peptides, indicating a function of cathepsin S in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease [1337]. Cathepsin S was also shown to be essential in B cells for effective proteolysis of the invariant chain necessary to render class II molecules competent for binding peptides [1345].

Abstract:
Non-repudiation is an important issue in mobile business and mobile commerce in order to provide the necessary evidences to prove whether some party participated in a transaction. The basis to support non-repudiation is the electronic signature. In Europe, directive 1999/93/EC of the European Parliament and the Council establishes the conditions that should be fulfilled in order to provide an electronic signature legally equivalent to the handwritten signature. This chapter presents and analyses the different solutions that have appeared over the years to provide mobile signatures. This analysis will help us to determine which mobile signatures solutions can be considered legally equivalent to the handwritten signature. Thus, this chapter allows people to get to know the different solutions that are available to build mobile commerce and mobile business applications that require the use of the non-repudiation service, and hence electronic signature in mobile devices.

Abstract:
Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is one of the main problems generated by the palm oil industry in the form of high solids, oils and grease, as well as very high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS). Electrocoagulation (EC) is an electrochemical process that destabilizes the charge of a pollutant using an electric current through an electrode and traps the pollutant in the floc so that it can be separated from the mixture. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the removal of BOD, COD, and TSS from POME using EC process. POME was obtained from the outlet pond of PT. X which is located in Jorong District, South Kalimantan with very high BOD, COD, and TSS content. The EC process uses a series of modified electrocoagulation devices, 3 mm aluminum plate, and Riden RD6012W Digital DC. The optimization of the EC process includes parameters for different currents density (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mA cm-2), and reaction time (30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270 min). While other parameters that are considered constant are aluminum electrode, inter-electrode distance 3 mm, temperature and pH. The results showed that the highest % removal of BOD and COD occurred at currents density of 4 and 6 mA/cm2 with a time of 270 minutes of 99% and 78% respectively. While the TSS is 93% at currents density of 6 mA cm-2 and 270 minutes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the areas of electronic identification and electronic trust services, the Regulation No. 910/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council on electronic identification and trust services for electronic transactions in the internal market and repealing Directive 1999/93/EC (eIDAS) creates uniform regulations for electronic signatures, seals, time stamps, registered mail and website certificates in the European single market. All developments that affect the security of signature procedures have an impact. In this study, we consider the candidates for quantum computer-resistant asymmetric cryptographic (PQC) methods currently under investigation in international research and standardization and evaluate their suitability for PKI systems with a focus on long-term preservation of evidential value, as is the case in particular with eIDAS-compliant signature solutions. Based on an evaluation system proposed by us - an adaptation of the system from [2] - we compare the application requirements with the properties of the candidates and recommend suitable methods.
