Abstract:

Im Gegensatz zu DIN 1052:2008 erfolgt die Bemessung von Nagelplatten als Verbindungsmittel bei Fachwerkstrukturen auf einem plastischen Bemessungskonzept sowohl für die Anschlussflächen als auch für die Fugennachweise. Für den Nachweis der Anschlussflächen wird ein vereinfachter Ansatz zur Berechnung eines plastischen Widerstandsmomentes vorgestellt, welcher auf der sicheren Seite liegt und auch ohne aufwendige Programmunterstützung berechnet werden kann. Für den Fugennachweis werden die Möglichkeiten zur plastischen Bemessung der Fuge zwischen einzelnen Anschlussflächen dargestellt.

This paper focuses on the contribution of the independent product design industry to business and strategy development processes of contemporary organizations. It embarks from the observation that whilst some policy-makers and enlightened businesses recognize the role and value of design beyond the traditional and narrow confines of technical or ‘commodity’ input, many fail to understand its potential as a transformative tool. Abstract:

Este trabajo plantea el panorama actual del contexto social del ejercicio del diseño, mismo que se ha modificado por el impacto tecnológico, lo que de acuerdo con algunos autores pone en tela de juicio la pertinencia de esta profesión en esta época. Ante ello se expone la emergencia de nuevos enfoques del diseño, principalmente el del Design Thinking, cuestionando si realmente funciona ya que, aunque parece ser un método en boga, cuenta con detractores. Esta discusión culmina con preguntas que proponen la reflexión sobre este modelo. Para abordar dicha reflexión se expone el caso de un proyecto realizado con base en el Design Thinking, se trata de la marca Piesu2 Terapéuticos que se fundamenta en el concepto de la rehabilimaginación acuñado por su autor. Este proyecto propone la resignificación de la rehabilitación motriz desde la percepción de los pacientes infantiles para mejorar su experiencia y alcanzar los objetivos clínicos.

Abstract:

The effect of remnant polarization (Pr), coercive electric-field (Ec), and parasitic capacitance of baseline device on the drive current (ION) of a metal-ferroelectric-metal-insulator-semiconductor (MFMIS) negative capacitance FinFET (NC FinFET) was investigated. The internal gate voltage in the MFMIS structure was simulated considering gate leakage current. Using technology computer aided design (TCAD) tool, the device characteristic of 7 nm FinFET was quantitatively estimated, for the purpose of modeling the baseline device of MFMIS NC FinFET. The need for appropriate parasitic capacitance to avoid performance degradation in MFMIS NC FinFET was presented through the internal gate voltage estimation. With an appropriate parasitic capacitance, the effect of Pr and Ec was investigated. In the case of Ec engineering, it is inappropriate to improve the device performance for MFMIS NC FinFET without threshold voltage degradation. Rather than Ec engineering, an adequate Pr value for achieving high ION in MFMIS NC FinFET is suggested.

This talk was a call to action for all students who are interested in design for social change. It encouraged them to delve into their personal motivations and values, and self-imposed limitations. Giving them some examples of how designers can change the world in a myriad of ways. The world needs compassionate, creative and very smart designers, taking the places of the old guard. The future is in their hands.

Este artículo aborda el diseño emocional como una contribución a la sostenibilidad, a partir de la generación de relaciones duraderas entre las personas y los productos de diseño. Entendemos al diseño emocional como el enfoque que estudia los estados afectivos que provocan los productos en las personas. Se realiza una revisión del análisis de ciclo de vida del producto, para ejemplificar cómo, al considerar a la afectividad y las emociones, se puede apoyar al diseño sostenible. Además, se presenta el desarrollo de una propuesta de diseño que aplica el conocimiento teórico; la solución tiene el fin de estimular la liga afectiva persona-producto.

Este artículo aborda la problemática de la inserción laboral de personas con discapacidad intelectual, buscando como objetivo explorar mejoras en las oportunidades de trabajo, donde se promueva un rol más activo y/o estratégico. A partir de un estudio de caso, donde se trabajó con una fundación para personas con síndrome de Down, a través un taller de diseño donde se impulsa el desarrollo de habilidades creativas que dieran como resultado una serie gráfica para aplicar en una línea de productos. El enfoque de la creatividad se retoma como la hipótesis del proyecto, desde el desarrollo de capacidades para la resolución de problemas a través de seguir un proceso de pensamiento de diseño. La hipótesis del proyecto busca potencializar la participación de personas con discapacidad intelectual en un medio creativo, adquiriendo conocimientos y generando una actividad laboral a favor del desarrollo de su autonomía.

Today the role of curating extends beyond the museum field: websites are curated, commercial firms establish functional roles entitled “curator”, and individuals in the creative economy use social media platforms to curate their lives and cultural product as brands. Curating has been extended and elevated today because design has become a more critical and integrative factor in brand development on both the organizational and individual levels (Kennedy, 2012). Curating is one way to manage the brand’s meaning. It is a chaordic system (Hock, 2005; van Einatten, 2001) that situates the complex process of editing, merchandising and documenting the brand’s offering in co-created situations with the customer. Yet, the literature is lacking in explicitly exploring and documenting how curating is used in branding.

En el ámbito del diseño y el desarrollo de productos existen diversos métodos que ayudan a los equipos a realizar la adecuada toma de decisiones posterior al proceso creativo donde se generan las soluciones o alternativas que deberán ser evaluadas para encontrar la que mejor satisfaga las necesidades demandadas por los usuarios de un producto específico. De acuerdo con diversos documentos consultados y revisados en la literatura, se encontraron seis métodos de amplio uso para la evaluación y toma de decisiones. Posteriormente, se analizaron sus principales características para conocer sus alcances y limitaciones, y se realizó una comparación de los métodos obteniendo las conclusiones a partir del análisis comparativo. Para alcanzar tal objetivo del presente, se utilizó el sistema FAROUT propuesto por Fleisher y Bensoussan.

La aplicación de los métodos de diseño puede posibilitar la escalabilidad de la oferta de los productos artesanales, lo que resulta en la generación de valor y la apertura de nuevos mercados. En caso contrario, la reducción de costos en la búsqueda de la estandarización y la falta de nueva oferta de productos artesanales puede llevar a la desaparición de las técnicas y del conocimiento artesanal. El objetivo de este estudio es la definición de un método de vinculación entre un proceso de diseño y la producción artesanal mediante talleres colaborativos enfocados en la generación de cultura material significativa. Se presenta una propuesta para el desarrollo de los productos neo-artesanales, resultado de una serie de talleres colaborativos entre artesanos y diseñadores mexicanos. La colaboración ocurrió en el marco del Programa para el Desarrollo de la Productividad y Competitividad del Sector Artesanal del Estado de Querétaro en el año 2017 y evidencia el potencial que ofrece la inclusión de herramientas de diseño dentro del praxis artesanal.

Abstract:

Electrocoagulation (EC) is a water treatment technology that has been proven effective at the bench scale for the removal of a wide variety of contaminants from water and wastewater. It is an electrochemical process that involves using a sacrificial anode to generate cations for coagulation. It also evolves hydrogen gas at the cathode, which some researchers have suggested can be used for natural flotation. EC has a number of advantages over conventional chemical coagulation (CC). For instance, solid metal electrodes tend to be easier to move and store than corrosive chemical salts. Furthermore, EC tends to increase solution pH, rather than consume alkalinity like chemical coagulants. However, unlike with CC, there are no standardized procedures for jar testing with EC, or for designing EC systems. Much of the current EC literature focuses on the treatment of a specific water or wastewater using custom EC systems. In an attempt to provide guidance for EC cell design, this paper reviews some of the current literature in four parts: electrodes, electrolyte, power source, and operational parameters.

Abstract:

The design of two-dimensional Infinite Impulse Response (2D-IIR) filters has recently attracted attention in several areas of engineering because of their wide range of applications. Synthesizing a user-defined filter in a 2D-IIR structure can be interpreted as an optimization problem. However, since 2D-IIR filters can easily produce unstable transfer functions, they tend to compose multimodal error surfaces, which are computationally difficult to optimize. On the other hand, Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms are well-known global optimization methods with the capacity to explore complex search spaces for a suitable solution. Every EC technique holds distinctive attributes to properly satisfy particular requirements of specific problems. Hence, a particular EC algorithm is not able to solve all problems adequately. To determine the advantages and flaws of EC techniques, their correct evaluation is a critical task in the computational intelligence community. Furthermore, EC algorithms are stochastic processes with random operations. Under such conditions, for obtaining significant conclusions, appropriate statistical methods must be considered. Although several comparisons among EC methods have been reported in the literature, their conclusions are based on a set of synthetic functions, without considering the context of the problem or appropriate statistical treatment. This paper presents a comparative study of various EC techniques currently in use employed for designing 2D-IIR digital filters. The results of several experiments are presented and statistically analyzed.

Sin embargo, en la Ciudad de México existe un Pop Life Hotel basado en el popular estilo, que puede ser analizado bajo la mirada del posestructuralismo, con puntos de cruce entre textos clásicos de la estética del arte Pop y la revisión de análisis, manifiestos y muestras arquitectónicas contemporáneas al movimiento. La convergencia de ambos frentes para establecer un interiorismo Pop es uno de los resultados, otro es el propio análisis del objeto empírico, llegando a las relaciones del usuario con el espacio al que aspira como dispositivo Pop.

La experiencia de los usuarios es una de las fuentes principales de información para el diseño de un producto o servicio, esto aplica también para los niños, observar sus emociones y reacciones permite tomar decisiones para diseñar. Sin embargo, los principios que se utilizan para estudiar al usuario y proyectar soluciones para adultos no pueden ser aplicados de igual forma en niños dado que sus necesidades, habilidades y especialmente expectativas, son muy diferentes. En este artículo se exploran algunas recomendaciones a tomar en cuenta cuando se hace investigación con niños, en función de las particularidades de su desarrollo cognitivo y emocional; también se presentarán ejemplos de cómo se trabaja con ellos como usuarios en diferentes partes del proceso de diseño, y la riqueza de entenderlos no sólo como sujetos de estudio sino como informantes, participantes o evaluadores de prototipos.

Abstract:

Purpose This paper aims to present a new method, named as augmented polynomial dimensional decomposition (PDD) method, for robust design optimization (RDO) and reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) subject to mixed design variables comprising both distributional and structural design variables. Design/methodology/approach The method involves a new augmented PDD of a high-dimensional stochastic response for statistical moments and reliability analyses; an integration of the augmented PDD, score functions, and finite-difference approximation for calculating the sensitivities of the first two moments and the failure probability with respect to distributional and structural design variables; and standard gradient-based optimization algorithms. Findings New closed-form formulae are presented for the design sensitivities of moments that are simultaneously determined along with the moments. A finite-difference approximation integrated with the embedded Monte Carlo simulation of the augmented PDD is put forward for design sensitivities of the failure probability. Originality/value In conjunction with the multi-point, single-step design process, the new method provides an efficient means to solve a general stochastic design problem entailing mixed design variables with a large design space. Numerical results, including a three-hole bracket design, indicate that the proposed methods provide accurate and computationally efficient sensitivity estimates and optimal solutions for RDO and RBDO problems.

En muchos campos de la actividad humana se nombra al usuario comúnmente, no obstante es en el campo del diseño donde su carácter mayormente es determinado. Esa figura móvil que representa a quién usará un objeto o servicio, pareciera tener una identidad oculta, pues al tratar de ver quién está detrás, no hay características definidas, como si de contemplar un vacío se tratara. Es casi obvio corresponder al usuario con una persona, animal o planta, pero definir con precisión quién es, resulta una aporía. El objetivo de este documento es hacer una revisión sobre el término dentro de sus características fundamentales, así como desentrañar su nacimiento dentro de la historia del diseño, para entender como un término que es usado indiscriminadamente dentro de ese campo designa a un humano, cuyo objetivo primario no es usar un objeto o servicio, sino existir.

Abstract. Evaporative cooling (EC) is an important tool to reduce heat stress in animal housing systems. Expansion of ventilation capacity in tunnel ventilated poultry facilities has resulted in increased water demand for EC systems. As water resources become more limited and costly, proper planning and design of water supply systems is critical to ensure demand is met during periods of heat stress which increase EC use and bird water consumption. Few estimates of EC water use in animal housing applications are available in the literature and available estimates are geographically limited or rely on extreme weather events. The goal of this analysis was to provide guidance for EC water supply design to accommodate estimates of peak demand, rather than average consumption rates. Purpose – Abuse and reuse of syringes will let nursing professionals suffer serious risk of cross-infection of diseases. The purpose of this paper is to propose a flexible and extensible innovative design approach of single-use safety syringe. Besides, the evaluation procedure for syringe has also been developed. Design/methodology/approach – By using the innovative design processes, based on the Su-Field model and extension method, this study presents designing of a new single-use safety syringe incorporating features and discarding problems. Findings – The solution of design problem indicated that the substance “fingers grip cap” should be replaced. The advantages and disadvantages of proposed new designs of safety syringe as well as the perceived differences on the use of the safety syringes can be found out by using Focus Group Interview method. Research limitations/implications – This research focussed on the function innovation without considering the psychology effect, such as shape aesthetics and users’ emotion. Practical implications – The single-use safety syringe design and corresponding examples are adopted to explain the design processes and confirm the feasibility of the proposed approach. Originality/value – This paper proposes a flexible and extensible innovative design approach of single-use safety syringe which is seldom studied. Importance and emergency of safety syringe design cannot be overemphasized.

The 1989 Loma Prieta, 1994 Northridge and 1995 Hyogo-ken nanbu earthquakes caused major damage to bridges and these events together with the research triggered as a consequence of the earthquakes has led to significant advances in bridge seismic design and retrofitting. This paper presents how this has affected design philosophies and design codes in EC, New Zealand, Japan and USA in recent years, with emphasis on the Japanese experience in the aftermath of the 1995 H-k-n earthquake. Near field ground motion, linear/nonlinear static/dynamic response analyses, treatment of liquefaction-induced lateral ground movement are described. Comparison of design philosophy, design force and ductility requirements are compared among the EC-8, New Zealand, Japanese, AASHTO and Caltrans/ATC-32 codes. Seismic retrofitting which was conducted in Japan after the Hyogo-ken nanbu earthquake over 29,000 reinforced concrete columns is described.

Purpose An improvement in the energy efficiency of wind turbines can be achieved using dual rotors. Because of complex flow physics, the design of dual-rotor wind turbines (DRWTs) requires repetitive evaluations of computationally expensive partial differential equation (PDE) simulation models. Approaches for solving design optimization of DRWTs constrained by PDE simulations are investigated. The purpose of this study is to determine design optimization algorithms which can find optimal designs at a low computational cost. Design/methodology/approach Several optimization approaches and algorithms are compared and contrasted for the design of DRWTs. More specifically, parametric sweeps, direct optimization using pattern search, surrogate-based optimization (SBO) using approximation-based models and SBO using kriging interpolation models with infill criteria are investigated for the DRWT design problem. Findings The approaches are applied to two example design cases where the DRWT fluid flow is simulated using the Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) equations with a two-equation turbulence model on an axisymmetric computational grid. The main rotor geometry is kept fixed and the secondary rotor characteristics, using up to three variables, are optimized. The results show that the automated numerical optimization techniques were able to accurately find the optimal designs at a low cost. In particular, SBO algorithm with infill criteria configured for design space exploitation required the least computational cost. The widely adopted parametric sweep approach required more model evaluations than the optimization algorithms, as well as not being able to accurately find the optimal designs. Originality/value For low-dimensional PDE-constrained design of DRWTs, automated optimization algorithms are essential to find accurately and efficiently the optimal designs. More specifically, surrogate-based approaches seem to offer a computationally efficient way of solving such problems.

A partir de la revisión historiográfica de los estudios profesionales del Diseño se expone el origen de la concepción de usuario como axioma de sus métodos de producción y de sus discursos imperantes: estrategia, emprendimiento e innovación. Para el estudio crítico de este marco de pensamiento se consideran los postulados filosóficos de Bolívar Echeverría, particularmente, sus teorías Universalismo concreto y Ethos histórico con el objetivo de comprender la función del valor de uso en la reproducción de las culturas y las cuatro formas como éste se gesta en las sociedades contemporáneas siempre en relación con el valor de cambio. Hacia el cierre del artículo, ambos análisis confluyen en la problematización de la enseñanza y la investigación del diseño en América Latina. En suma, se trata de un experimento especulativo que toma referencias de las ciencias sociales para reflexionar sobre el rol y la responsabilidad de las disciplinas creativas como agentes sociales, mostrando, a la vez, el potencial de las referencias iberoamericanas en el estudio de las problemáticas y de los usuarios de la misma región. La consideración de fuentes ajenas al campo del diseño se realiza con el deseo de resolver los dilemas que su práctica profesional presenta más, este acercamiento se realiza hasta el punto en que resuelve tales incertidumbres sin ahondar a profundidad en los corpus y las discusiones de esos otros campos de conocimiento. Se plantea como experimento por hacer uso de conceptos y constructos intelectuales con una visión transdisciplinar, pero con el reconocimiento de la necesidad de crear formas particulares de investigación propias del mundo del diseño.

Abstract:

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the main contributors to disability and suicide mortality globally. Paroxetine hydrochloride (PHH) is the most potent antidepressant used for MDD treatment. Due to its reduced side effects PAXIL® CR is a widely-used controlled-release formulation of PHH. However, the complicated double-layer production of PAXIL® CR faces the risk of layer separation. In this study, PHH enteric coating single layer controlled-release tablets (PHH-EC-SLTs) were designed as a simplified substitution of PAXIL® CR through a rational formulation screening. The optimized PHH-EC-SLTs showed similar release behaviors in vitro to PAXIL® CR and the release profiles corresponded to a zero-order release model (R2 = 0.9958). Polymer matrix erosion was the main release mechanism, according to the fitting exponents n > 1 in the Korsmeyer-Pappas model. Crucial pharmacokinetic parameters including peak-reaching time (Tmax), peak concentration (Cmax) and the area under the blood level-time curve (AUC0-48) of PHH-EC-SLTs and PAXIL® CR had no significant difference (p > 0.05) and the relative bioavailability (F = 97.97%) of PHH-EC-SLTs demonstrated their similar pharmacokinetic profiles in vivo. In view of avoiding layer separation risk and simplifying the preparation processing, the self-made PHH-EC-SLTs could be considered as a safe and economic alternative to PAXIL® CR.
