Abstract:

Abstract:
The bishops of the medieval English Church were among the greatest landowners in the kingdom. The list of their estates in the Valor ecclesiasticus of 1535 eloquently testifies to their extensive holdings. But concentration on temporalities as the source of episcopal wealth ignores the extent to which the Church's own jurisdictional and administrative structure provided a means for generating wealth. This income, which the Church itself provided for bishops as a part of their office, distinct from the revenues generated by land-holding and other resources ancillary to their ecclesiastical functions, deserves more attention than it has so far received. The neglect of income from spiritualities is partly explicable by the nature of the sources, which are usually very incomplete and, in most cases, limited in chronological coverage. Nevertheless, usable evidence does survive from many dioceses, which eventually may be brought together to produce a worthwhile general statement.

Abstract:
Monastic charitable provision in the later Middle Ages through to the Dissolution has often been described as inadequate in terms of both quantity and quality. It has been accused of ineffectiveness because of its allegedly indiscriminate nature. This article suggests that in fact the religious houses and hospitals of England were providing a greater amount of poor relief in a more assiduous manner than has previously been allowed. The core of evidence comes from the 1535 national tax assessment of the Church, the Valor Ecclesiasticus. This contains details of the charitable provision carried out by most monasteries and hospitals as recorded by Crown commissions. After allowances have been made for the bias in the survey, a statistical analysis is carried out which indicates that an upward reassessment should be made of the quantity of monastic charity. Qualitative evidence from both the Valor Ecclesiasticus and from other contemporary sources also suggests that the pre-Reformation Church was providing genuinely beneficial poor relief.

Abstract:
This work is divided into three sections: in the first part, the influence of western ecclesiastical educational models on greek ecclesiastical education. In order to influence the greeks, western missionaries tried to highlight the educational systems similar to their own, which had consequences that are still felt today. Ecclesiastical education still suffers the consequences of the european models even though their implantation took place over a century ago. The second part is consecrated to the description of greek society which is characterized by radical changes such as secularization. Those influences on greek ecclesiastical life are examined since their consequences have deprived the later of its specificity and identity. In the third part, the determining factors concerning the schooling of students in ecclesiastical schools and the poor results of their studies are explained by examining the dates and places of birth of the seminarists as well as their geographical origin and environment

Abstract:
2011 - 2012
MacDonald, Alan R. "Ecclesiastical politics in Scotland, 1586-1610." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/1797.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the interaction between the Kirk’s institutions and the state between the fall of the earl of Arran’s government in 1585 and the full restoration of diocesan episcopacy in 1610. Due to the lack of focussed secondary material, reliance has been placed upon primary sources, especially information from the courts of the Kirk above the parochial level - the presbyteries, synods and the general assembly - on personal correspondence and on governmental and diplomatic sources. The role of the general assembly has been investigated by analyses of its composition and its interaction with the crown. The part played by the presbytery of Edinburgh and its successor as the principal standing committee of the Kirk, the commission of the general assembly, provides a more focussed investigation of the personnel involved in ecclesiastical politics at the highest level. Chapters are also devoted to the synods and the presbyteries, concentrating on how these regional and local courts responded to matters of national significance. Finally, a chapter on the question of ecclesiastical representation in parliament complements the analysis of the institutional framework of the Kirk by demonstrating how opinions on a particular issue were formed and changed by political circumstances. This analysis demonstrates that many of the historiographical constructs which have been placed upon the issue of ecclesiastical politics in the reign of James VI require fundamental reassessment. The idea of factions within the Kirk - ‘Melvillians’ , or ‘Presbyterians’ and ‘episcopalians’ - is misleading and has done much to cloud the true picture. The alternative view presented here suggests that there were, throughout the period, shifting patterns of opposition and obedience to the policy of the crown rather than fixed clerical parties. Opinions remained fluid and were affected by events. Historians have approached the sources with preconceptions concerning the existence of such factions and have thus tried to find what was often not there. It is also demonstrated that there was a crucial difference in royal policy on either side of the regnal union which, along with 1596, should be seen as a turning point. Prior to 1603, James VI had a firm gnp on his ecclesiastical policy as a result of direct personal involvement after 1596. Consequently, he was able to carry out a successful policy based on consensus. After his accession to the English throne, however, the indirect nature of hs contact with ecclesiastical politics caused him to lose that grip. The centralising tendency in government, which had become evident prior to 1603, accelerated and was a major factor in increased clerical opposition to royal policy during the first decade of the seventeenth century. It is, therefore, also asserted here that, contrary to the view of most historians, it was this factor and not the liturgical innovations of the second decade of the seventeenth century which brought about the loss of clerical confidence in the religious policy of James VI.

Abstract:
The plan for occupation of the South Caucasus, which was put forward in the first half of the 18th century, during the reign of the Russian Tsar Peter I, had become even vividly in the 19th century. The idea of the Tsarist Russia to create a Christian state in the Caspian region of the South Caucasus – in the territory of Azerbaijan emerged again. During this period, the religious- ecclesiastical system, which forms the basis of theocratic society, played an important role in the socio-political life of Azerbaijan. It was during this period that the occupier Russian Empire used all methods and means to weaken or to control the social foundations of theocratic-Muslim society in Azerbaijan. The religious, political and socio-economic policy carried out in this region seriously damaged the moral life of the Lankaran region after the occupation of the northern part of Azerbaijan. According to statistical indicators of the time, during the period of khanates, among the 3190 families in the Lankaran Khanate there were 320 ecclesiastic families-35 families of the Seyid (1105 heads), but in 1848, this figure reduced to 462 heads. At the end of the 19th century there were only 52 ecclesiastic people in the Lankaran uyezd. This was 0.03 per cent of the total population - 130 thousand 987 people. There were only 18 ecclesiastic people in the Lankaran town. The resettlement of the Christian population of Tsarist Russia to Azerbaijan and, in particular, to Lankaran, was one of the most serious factors affecting the religious system in the region. Keywords: Russian Empire, Azerbaijan, Lankaran Region, Religious-Colonial Policy.

Abstract:
The Ecclesiastical law is one of the oldest theological disciplines that expresses the authentic church tradition created by the course of the sacred body of the Church throughout history. Besides its undeniable ecclesiastical identity and eclectic character that appear through the sacred permeating of its canonical testimony and other bearers of the theological traditions such as the science of worship, the patristic spiritual and theological legacy, and the contribution of shaping its dogmatical and ethical testifying, about bearers of literary tradition, and the history of Church, the Ecclesiastical law has been developing in the direction of its identification with the jurisprudent subjects and the methods of exploration from the period of late medieval, which makes it a dual scientific discipline. Albeit it has been the subject of discussions on its positioning in the family of legal and theological sciences during the last three centuries, the Ecclesiastical law withstands rounded and ultimate epistemological definitions, keeping its structural complexity as well as its multi-leveled, unique, and distinctive theological, legal, pastoral, and academic scientific identity. This topic is a reduced attempt to perceive the positive and negative consequences of the dual identity of the Ecclesiastical law.

Abstract:
This article presents preliminary considerations on the stylistic features of modern martyr's lives, based on the material of the 8-volume edition of the Lives of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian XX century of the Moscow Diocese. In these texts, the sources used are abundantly quoted (official resolutions, interrogation protocols, letters, etc.). The style of the original text is religious-ecclesiastical; the styles of quotations are official-business, colloquial, also religious-ecclesiastical. Thus, modern martyr's lives are a complex stylistic fusion.

Reis, João. Slaves Who Owned Slaves in Nineteenth-Century Bahia, Brazil. Maria Sibylla Merian International Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America, May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46877/reis.2021.36.

Abstract:
It was not uncommon in Brazil for slaves to own slaves. Slaves as masters of slaves existed in many slave societies and societies with slaves, but considering modern, chattel slavery in the Americas, Brazil seems to have been a special case where this phenomenon thrived, especially in nineteenth-century urban Bahia. The investigation is based on more than five hundred cases of enslaved slaveowners registered in ecclesiastical and manumission records in the provincial capital city of Salvador. The paper discusses the positive legal basis and common law rights that made possible this peculiar form of slave ownership. The paper relates slave ownership by slaves with the direction and volume of the slave trade, the specific contours of urban slavery, access by slaves to slave trade networks, and slave/master relations. It also discusses the web of convivial relations that involved the slaves of slaves, focusing on the ethnic and gender profiles of the enslaved master and their slaves.

Hall, Mark, and Neil Price. Medieval Scotland: A Future for its Past. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, September 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.165.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings. Underpinning all five areas is the recognition that human narratives remain crucial for ensuring the widest access to our shared past. There is no wish to see political and economic narratives abandoned but the need is recognised for there to be an expansion to more social narratives to fully explore the potential of the diverse evidence base. The questions that can be asked are here framed in a national context but they need to be supported and improved a) by the development of regional research frameworks, and b) by an enhanced study of Scotland’s international context through time. 1. From North Britain to the Idea of Scotland: Understanding why, where and how ‘Scotland’ emerges provides a focal point of research. Investigating state formation requires work from Medieval Scotland: a future for its past ii a variety of sources, exploring the relationships between centres of consumption - royal, ecclesiastical and urban - and their hinterlands. Working from site-specific work to regional analysis, researchers can explore how what would become ‘Scotland’ came to be, and whence sprang its inspiration. 2. Lifestyles and Living Spaces: Holistic approaches to exploring medieval settlement should be promoted, combining landscape studies with artefactual, environmental, and documentary work. Understanding the role of individual sites within wider local, regional and national settlement systems should be promoted, and chronological frameworks developed to chart the changing nature of Medieval settlement. 3. Mentalities: The holistic understanding of medieval belief (particularly, but not exclusively, in its early medieval or early historic phase) needs to broaden its contextual understanding with reference to prehistoric or inherited belief systems and frames of reference. Collaborative approaches should draw on international parallels and analogues in pursuit of defining and contrasting local or regional belief systems through integrated studies of portable material culture, monumentality and landscape. 4. Empowerment: Revisiting museum collections and renewing the study of newly retrieved artefacts is vital to a broader understanding of the dynamics of writing within society. Text needs to be seen less as a metaphor and more as a technological and social innovation in material culture which will help the understanding of it as an experienced, imaginatively rich reality of life. In archaeological terms, the study of the relatively neglected cultural areas of sensory perception, memory, learning and play needs to be promoted to enrich the understanding of past social behaviours. 5. Parameters: Multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches should be encouraged in order to release the research potential of all sectors of archaeology. Creative solutions should be sought to the challenges of transmitting the importance of archaeological work and conserving the resource for current and future research.
