Full textIn times when student mobility in Europe has increased it is important to investigate the educational potentialities of student exchange programs for young people. In the present study reports of french Erasmus-students' year abroad to a regional authority where analysed (N=80), at three levels (1) by discourse analysis (e. G. , Benveniste & Perelman), (2) lexico-analysis (e. G. Pecheux & Benezecri), and (3) in-deppth analysis (e. G. Bryam ; Kae͏̈s ; Todorov). At the first level of analysis the findings showed how students descibe their new context. The majority describe their stay as acdemic experiences, every day life, tourism and leisure. Some students gave proximal desciptions of relationships and self-discovery, while others provided spatial markers and report school knowledge about the the host culture. At the second level of analyses the findings indicated that students' involvement in writing was linked to their involvement in the context : the more expressive and personal essays focus on the aspects of relationships and self-discovery. The more impersonal and formal texts draw a picture of spatial markers and report school knowledge about the host culture. Finally, the in-depth analysis showed the difficulties students has when handling cultural otherness and closeness, which was characterised by spatial, temporal, social, cultural and linguistic rupture, spatially. That gave way to an uncertainly zone where various kinds of shifts occured : some students remained benigh and temporary, but others were deeper, redefining their identity. When the findings were interpreted from the perspective of policy documents, it was concluded that positive self-evaluations were quite frequent among exchange students, but that experiences of intercultural learning or the construal of a european identity seem less obvious
