Four species of dendrochirote holothurians, Roweia stephensoni John, Pseudocnella sykion Lampert, Aslia spyridophora Clark, Roweia frauenfeldi frauenfeldi Ludwig, and one aspidochirote holothurian, Neostichopus grammatus Clark, are common inhabitants of the intertidal regions of the eastern Cape rocky shores of South Africa. All five species are sympatric for most of their geographical distribution. Serotonin expression was examined in the development of three species of seastars belonging to the genus Patiriella. These species represented three different modes of larval development, planktonic planktotrophic (P. regulars), planktonic lecithotrophic (P. calcar) and benthic lecithotrophic (P. exigua). Abstract:

Small scale distributions of Mellita tenuis and Encope spp. were quantified at Fort De Soto Park on Mullet Key, off Egmont Key and off Captiva Island, Florida during 2005. Off Captiva Island, Encope spp. were aggregated in 33.3% of plots in March. Off Egmont Key, M. tenuis were aggregated in 100% of plots in March but in no plots in September. At Fort De Soto Park, M. tenuis were aggregated in 37.5% of plots in May 12.5% in July and 50.0% in September. The South African Ophiuroidea were last reviewed by Clark and Courtman-Stock in 1976. In the current investigation, the systematics of the group is thus revised in its entirety for the first time in 40 years. The data used originated from a number of sources. Existing data were sourced from i) published literature, ii) large expeditions or survey data, iii) South African institutional collections and iv) international museums.
