Full textThis work aims at defining the characteristics of an ideal lighting control system for office employees. We have studied the office occupants' behaviours, needs and preferences regarding 1ighting control systems. For that purpose, we have developed different methods: semi directed interviews, questionnaires, punctual or continuous measurements (use of the luminaries). We have asked or watched about a hundred office occupants in four commercial buildings and one office at ENTPE, equipped with various modem lighting control systems. Those surveys have showed that the personal preferences regarding luminosity, the preference for a lighting with as much daylight as possible, the main activity performed, the need to control the luminous atmosphere or the preference for the lighting to be automatically managed, were the main internal influences (peculiar to people) of the occupants' use of the lighting. The external influences were the lack of mental and physical accessibility of the control interfaces. Further to the results of the surveys, we have conducted three in situ tests. We have tested a lighting system composed of a desk lamp with a switch, and of a reduced ambient lighting provided by lamps on the ceiling and controlled by an occupancy sensor. Satisfaction about that system was not unanimous although it was quite wide, but some improvements of the desk lamp characteristics may lead to greater acceptation. We have tested the influence on behaviours of a more user friendly explanatory leaflet about a sophisticated manual lighting control, influence which turned out to be very weak. At last, we have created and tested a new and more ergonomic remote control, and so determined which options were the most suitable on a remote control for a lighting system having three independent light sources, and which location of the remote control seemed to suit occupants' needs best

Full textThe taking into account of innovative lighting in a building project is fundamental, because of energy saving which it makes it possible to carry out, and of its psychological influence on the human being. The lighting of the light pipes is known little about, it is flot or little used by the design methods. The evaluation of the efficiency of a diffusing light pipe was made through four approaches : 1st approach resulted from a photometric characterization from prismatic diffusing light pipe 6m length and 10 cm in diameter, supplied by 2 projectors HQI 70W ; 2nd approach which makes it possible to evaluate the efficiency of a diffusing light pipe using two digital models (the first simplified suggested by the literature and the detailed second one original) ; 3rd approach numerical which determines the efficiency of the light pipe starting from the recurrence laws written in analytical form or matrix ; and 4th approaches of simulation of an optical model which reproduces the luminous behavior of a diffusing light pipe using software APILUX. To compare the simulation realized by using the software APILUX from starting the numerical data of 2nd and 3rd approach, we carried out another simulation using software VISUAL ERGONOMICS starting from the measurement results. The originals numerical and simulation approaches which we propose has an important potential within the framework of a lighting project of the light pipes, for the study and for the characterization of the new lighting equipment

Full textThis research focuses on the performance of movable insulation panels as manual shading devices and as an energy conservation strategy for an office space. High lighting level requirements for such spaces ask for a quest for transparency which results in high thermal losses in cold climates. Simulation results demonstrate the device’s potential in reducing energy consumption as well as diversifying visual ambiances. Three forms of panels are simulated using IES VE and Radiance module. Optimal manipulations are determined from an energy and lighting standpoint by assessing two metrics and are compared to illustrate their effects on lighting environment and energy loads. Optimal scenarios are constructed on an hourly basis to illustrate differences in energy and lighting needs. While some manipulation scenarios clearly demonstrate non compatible effects on energy and lighting performance, some scenarios can significantly improve both energy and lighting performance and should be considered. Conclusions address the potential of movable insulation panels as an effective adaptive strategy.

Full textThis PhD investigates discomfort glare caused by luminous sources in interior lighting and is based on the study of two problematics. The first one focuses on the relevance of several experimental methods to characterize this perceptual phenomenon (physiological and psychological methods). The second one considers the influence of the spectral power distribution of the glare source. An experimental set up was designed to present glare stimuli in visual conditions inspired by interior lighting (real size room, background luminance at 20 cd/m² for photopic conditions, glare source at 150000 cd/m² located 20° above the centre of the visual field). Two preliminary experiments and three main experiments were carried out. The preliminary experiments validated the relevance of both problematics. Based on a literature review of the psychophysical and physiological methods, eleven methods were selected: seven psychophysical procedures (rating on a scale, method of constant stimuli, method of limits, adjustment, paired comparison, matching and magnitude estimation) and four physiological measurement tools (pupillometry, electromyography EMG, electroencephalography EEG and electrocardiography ECG). These procedures and these tools were studied in two experiments. The experiment on psychophysical methods looked at the significativity of experimental biases and the repeatability of the procedures. It highlighted the importance of taking into account experimental biases when planning a protocol and analyzing the obtained data. Besides, some methods enabled increasing the discrimination between the stimuli. Considering criteria based on repeatability, experimental biases, difficulty and duration, three psychophysical methods for discomfort glare evaluation were selected (method of constant stimuli, paired comparison and magnitude estimation). The experiment on physiological measurement tools was more exploratory than the psychophysical experiment: the analysis was based on a qualitative observation of each participant data. It focused on the comparison of measured signals in presence or absence of glare stimuli. In particular, a processing of the EEG/EMG data was developed for this analysis, as well as frequential and temporal graphical representations. No significant difference between glaring and non-glaring situations was observed. However, some measures showed an influence of the brightness increase of the whole visual field. Hence it seems that these physiological measures are not relevant for typical interior lighting conditions, but might be for more extreme glare conditions (luminous sources presented in a dark ambiance, very high luminance of the whole visual field). The influence of the spectral power distribution of a light source on discomfort glare was studied using the three previously selected psychophysical methods. The influence of spectral content of white stimuli was validated. It implies the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). Besides, the implication of these cells dominates the influence of correlated color temperature, and for an identical level of ipRGCs excitation discomfort glare increases with colour temperature (conclusions validated by some of the procedures)

Full textOver the last decade, the development of so called non-fullerene acceptors (NFA) resulted in power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) exceeding 18%. The most important part of OSCs is the photoactive layer. Hence, the major subject of this thesis work was the development of high efficiency solar cells using ink-jet printing (IJP) of polymer blends based on NFA. A first part of the thesis work was dedicated to processing and device optimization of ITIC- derivatives and corresponding polymer donors such as PCE-12 and PCE-10. Additionally, the nanoscale morphology of NFA based blends was also studied in detail. In the second part of the thesis work to reach the requirements of IJP we studied the impact of the non-halogenated solvents processing of the NFA materials on the photoactive layer morphology. First, we identified o-xylene compatible congeners such as PM6 polymer and ITIC-4F acceptor to study the IJP of such photovoltaic blend in air using a semi-industrial printer allowing to obtain OSCs with the efficiency of 10.12%.In the last chapter of the thesis, the performance of OSCs processed by IJP and doctor blade were optimized for indoor light illumination. In the case of PM6:ITIC-4F blends, solar cells with an efficiency of 14.8% at 200 lux indoor illumination. The use of the polymer PTQ-10 combined with ITIC-4F could further boost the efficiency at 16% under the same illumination conditions

Full textIn a context of increasing scarcity of primary energy, it is necessary to work to reduce energy consumption related to lighting in buildings while ensuring that occupants enjoy good visual comfort. Physical-realistic simulation using light simulation software is a tool for evaluating various variants of a building. It can be used in multi-criteria optimization approaches with a view to deploying decision-support systems designed to identify the best possible trade-offs between energy consumption and user comfort. Insofar as the optical properties of building materials (opaque, transparent, coloured, isotropic, anisotropic and with textures or micro-reliefs) are an input to light simulation software, their characterization is an essential prerequisite for the implementation of this eco-design approach for buildings. The optical properties of materials are described by the mathematical formalism of the BSDF (Bidirectional Scattering Distribution Function) and can be integrated into most light simulation software in the form of analytical models or tabulated measurements. Widely used analytical models can be used to characterize optically simple materials but are difficult to extend to more complex materials. Moreover, no device currently exists that can finely characterise the full range of materials in a building in an operational time frame using tabulated measurements. Therefore, the aim of this thesis work is to design a device for the fast and accurate measurement of the optical characteristics of materials for the physico-realistic simulation of buildings. A first measuring device has been designed and has shown the feasibility of operating an instrument equipped with multi-sensors as a detector. It identified the pitfalls to be avoided as well as the obstacles to be circumvented for the design of a second, more operational measuring device with increased capabilities. Based on an instrument equipped with multi-sensors and a computer-controlled positioning system, it allows the measurement of the optical properties of the building's constituent materials in an operational context. The raw data acquisition and processing phases are supervised by computer. The duration of the measurements ranges from 5 minutes 40 seconds to 3 hours 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Their average repeatability is 97.88%

Full textThis paper explores the potential for natural light to enhance wooden interior environments. Several studies have proven that the use of wood in furniture, interior surfaces and decoration help creating warm, bright and pleasant ambiences, enhancing psychological well-being and comfort when compared to other materials. This study aims to compare and examine the photometric and psychologic effects of diverse wooden environments. The objectives of this project were twofold: first, to study the diversity of northern sky conditions in terms of cloud cover and thickness as well as to evaluate the impacts of the diversity of natural light on five different wooden scale models. In order to create a cloudiness scale, weather data was collected during spring equinox in Quebec City, as well as photometric measurements. A photographic survey occurred in five scale models made with interior wooden finishes of varying color combinations, which documented the impact of sky diversity on brightness, hue and contrast. Simultaneous scale model studies under a real sky allowed direct comparison under the exact same lighting conditions. The second objective was to explore the effects of different colors, finish and ratio of wooden surfaces combinations on human perception. More specifically, participants compare simultaneously the five different interior wooden scale models under the natural light of the northern hemisphere in terms of their appreciation, visual comfort and well-being. The survey involved 80 participants with an exploratory questionnaire in order to compare and classify the different models. Conclusions showed a remarkable diversity of visual ambiences for a South-East oriented space depending on the position of the sun and sky conditions. Gray-dyed wooden finishes created dull and unchanging atmospheres, while yellow oaked surfaces allowed various dynamic ambiences. Participants demonstrated a preference for clear, bright and warm models, relating them cognitive and small-scale tasks. Darker models in terms of reflectance and lighting ambiences were the least preferred, especially for women.

Full textDesigning a building with comfort and energy conservation concerns is a key issue. In the alarming global context, both on energy-climate that the building sector is singled out. In France, the lighting is among the poor performers compared to other European countries. The country lags behind in quality tertiary or residential lighting in terms of energy performance, visual comfort or health. The organization of "2015, Année de la Lumière en France" by the ONU, UNESCO and the CNOP shows a change which tends to take place in the popular consciousness. Reunion Island, considering its strong solar radiation, is a land of choice to experiment with innovative devices in the contribution of daylight in buildings. For this purpose, the physical approach of the phenomenon provides prediction prospects, where the theoretical study of today will be tomorrow's building. Starting with a generalist approach, this PhD thesis aims to be as comprehensive as possible in the literature review, experimental and modelling study of the TDGS (Tubular Daylight Guide Systems) applied to the building. Our bibliographic survey has revealed that, this process is commonly marketed and installed internationally on the buildings concerned about their environmental impact or well-being of their occupants. However, the literature also shows they are poorly studied, and the approaches cannot be applied to all types of climates. In this context, a full-scale experimental study, including many scenarios was conducted to understand the phenomena involved. The semi-empirical modelling has both strengths and weaknesses. With simplicity, it remains limited to a configuration or a particular climate. In this issue, this research offers a solution: a numeric tool of dedicated modelling environment, ensuring the generation of the models according to need, called HEMERA. It uses the power of genetic algorithms to provide an effective solution to a local problem. The computer code CODYRUN is the support of the validation of the model developed as part of this work, and adjusted specifically for the climate of Reunion Island. This software profits an experience and a development of over 20 years in the PIMENT laboratory
