Full textThis dissertation has the objective to map the analytical framework of the architecture of Porto Alegre between the years of 1880 and 1930. This moment was characterized by the eclecticism. Due to the multiplicity of the architectural languages this period contrasts strongly with the relative homogeneity of the previous architecture of the city, dominated by the Portuguese colonial architecture until 1822 and the neoclassicism during the imperial period. The work defines a period in which the city does not exhibit such homogeneity according to the latest manifestations of the eclectic architecture. The architectural styles predominant in the erudite and larger buildings are identified over the period. Each style is discussed in a separate chapter. Every chapter of this work has the same structure: there is the contextualization of the style in the international, national and regional spheres; the local buildings presenting each style are identified; and finally, some works are analyzed. The analysis made and presented in this work emphasizes the observation of the building in relation to its massing and ornamentation, referring less to the planimetric and spatial solution. It is important to emphasize that the classification of the works in various styles was possible due to the predominance of its ornamental characteristics. However, there are exceptions, either unique cases without any other equivalent building or cases in which the predominance of a specific style cannot be detected. In order to consider these exceptions they were grouped in the Chapter Eclectic Trials.

O final do Século XIX foi um período marcado por intensas transformações no Brasil e no exterior, onde o desenvolvimento econômico e social acarretava mudanças no modo de vida e costumes da sociedade de então. Isto, aliado às grandes levas de imigrantes e de seus "saberes", de novas tecnologias e materiais, levaram à transformação das paisagens urbanas, onde as feições coloniais eram gradativamente abandonadas e as cidades caminhavam rumo ao "desenvolvimento". Curitiba, então capital da Província do Paraná absorveu estas transformações quando da sua emancipação das províncias de São Paulo e passou a caminhar a passos largos para se transformar em uma metrópole. Neste contexto, o engenheiro italiano Ernesto Guaita chega a Curitiba integrando a equipe de técnicos da ferrovia Curitiba-Paranaguá e se instala na cidade, configurando um dos principais profissionais responsáveis pela nova feição urbana, onde as linhas da arquitetura eclética tão bem representaram a conciliação da necessidade de comunicar e construir. Assim sendo, este trabalho se propõe a lançar um olhar sobre o contexto histórico do final do século XIX, especificamente na cidade de Curitiba, através da leitura da arquitetura produzida por Ernesto Guaita e sua contribuição para a transformação da cidade.

Full textThis dissertation investigates the work done by the architect Affonso Hebert in the capital city of Porto Alegre. Hebert was head of the office of public works of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, during the first decades of the republican regime. Educated in Europe, Hebert began his public carreer as a draftsman during the Imperial period. Later, he directed the office of public works under the command of many presidents of the state. During his term, Hebert designed in a singular form, inspired in European eclecticism, and particularly in the architecture of Paris in the Belle Époque. This dissertation has started with a thorough bibliographic review, combined with archival investigation related to the works made by Hebert in his stay at the office of public works. Further information was obtained with the descendants of the architect. This stage was followed by a formal investigation of the projects and buildings designed by Hebert, which also tried to frame his work in the local and extra-local contexts at that time. The outline of the architect's work intends to make a meaningful contribution to the understanding of the architecture of Rio Grande do Sul in the beginning of the 20th century.

Full textThis dissertation is about Cândido de Abreu’s architectural works, which were built between 1897 and 1916 in Curitiba. The context of those days is introduced through a discussion of Eclecticism in architecture, both in the general and specific environment of Curitiba, where it is related to the expansion and planning of the capital city of Paraná. After that, a brief biography of Cândido de Abreu is presented. The main part of the dissertation consists of case studies which analyze the works attributed to Cândido de Abreu in order to describe them and verify if they contain the values which reflect the architectonical debate of those days. Furthermore, this dissertation presents an attempt to establish the meaning and relevance of Cândido de Abreu’s works within the architectural history of Curitiba.

Nesta pesquisa estudamos a gramática compositiva da fachada da arquitetura residencial eclética de Belém, nos aspectos formais dos seus elementos, através das relações de simetria, ritmo, proporções, disposição, dimensões e uso das cores em cada um dos elementos que a compõem. O estudo restringe-se à tipologia residencial de porão e um pavimento, em exemplares sem autoria definida. A pesquisa considera também a importância das fachadas na construção da identidade coletiva, fundada no sentido de pertencimento da comunidade. Por isso, utiliza o método etnográfico na apreensão da memória, uma vez que as intervenções de preservação do patrimônio histórico, muitas vezes, desconsideram a necessidade de abordar os conflitos entre o antigo (características estilísticas originais da edificação) e o novo (preferências ou necessidades atuais), um velho dilema entre permanência e transformação. Para proceder a análise, criamos três categorias de fachadas: fachadas classicistas puras, fachadas clássicas com elementos ecléticos e fachadas ecléticas. Por considerarmos a fachada classicista pura a origem da fachada eclética, esta foi privilegiada para as análises geométricas e da policromia: a) Análise comparativa ao longo do tempo das imagens fotográficas da pesquisa iconográfica; b) Análise compositiva das relações de proporções, disposições e dimensões dos elementos de fachada com base na proporcionalidade áurea; c) Observação visual do padrão cromático encontrado a partir das prospecções pictóricas. A partir desse estudo foi possível dizer que as fachadas classicistas puras têm um vocabulário restrito na composição de sua gramática, com regras bem definidas, mas os projetos, na sua origem, não obedecem a princípios compositivos eruditos, o que nos leva a concluir que se basearam em imitação de outras obras, possivelmente sem contar com a orientação de profissional da arquitetura. Quanto a relação das gamas cromáticas entre os vários elementos da composição de suas fachadas, identificamos a existência de um princípio cromático. Consideramos que o modelo cromático encontrado não é complexo e não é de contrastes, mas de nuances de tons, usadas com significados. Este estudo contribui para o entendimento da arquitetura civil eclética de Belém.
In this research we studied the compositional grammar from the facade of the eclectic residential architecture of Belem, on the formal aspects of its elements, through relations of symmetry, rhythm, proportions, layout, dimensions and use of colors in each of its parts. The study is restricted to the type of residential basement and a deck in specimens without definite authorship. The research also considers the importance of facades in construction of collective identity, based on a sense of belonging in the community. Therefore, using the ethnographic method in the apprehension of memory, since the interventions historic preservation often disregards the need to address the conflict between the old (original stylistic features of the building) and the new (current needs or preferences ), an old dilemma between permanence and change. To conduct the analysis, we created three categories of facades: pure classicist facades, classical facades with eclectic elements and eclectic facades. By considering the facade classicist pure source eclectic facade, it was preferred to the polychromatic geometric and analyzes a) Comparative analysis over time of iconographic images of the search, b) compositional analysis of the relationships proportions, dimensions and arrangements of façade elements based on proportionality golden c) Visual observation of chromatic patterns found from prospecting pictorial. From this study it was possible to say that the pure classicist facades have a limited vocabulary in the composition of its grammar, with well defined rules, but the projects in its origin, do not obey the compositional principles learned, which leads us to conclude that based on imitation of other works, possibly without relying on the guidance of professional architecture. As the ratio of chromatic ranges between the various elements of the composition of their facades, we identify the existence of a principle chromatic. We believe that the model is not found chromatic complex and not contrasts, but nuances of tone, used with meanings. This study contributes to the understanding of the eclectic civil architecture of Belem.

Full textThis research analyzes the religious architecture of Itu city and its relationships with the urban reform which occurred from 1873 to 1916. Our study is emphasized in the reforms occurred in ancient colonial temples which had significant changes at that time. The study of the ideals of modernization and of the Catholic Church guidelines at that time is the main point for a historiographic review of the eclectic architecture. We analyzed one of the main agents of these changes: their ideologies, the new modalities of the design process and their links with the technological changes. All these factors influenced in different ways in the reforms of these churches. In this context, it was researched the link in the church reforms with the changes that Itu had at that time like the arrival of railroads, the squares which became into gardens, the construction of a new cemetery, the new municipal slaughterhouse, the new municipal market and the implementation of the public lighting. As a clipping of the research, it was selected some representative churches of the past colonial which had their façades completely changed in the Passage of Century: The Nossa Senhora da Candelária Church, Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio Church and the ones administrated by the Companhia de Jesus in the city: The São Luis do Gonzaga Church, The Bom Jesus Church and, finally, The Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte Church.

Full textThis paper analyses three eclectic buildings that constitutes a monumental set in the edges of the Alfandega Square in Porto Alegre, all of them recycled in the last quarter of the XX’s and the XXI’s: the “Delegacia Fiscal”, “Correios e Telégrafos”, and “Banco Nacional do Comércio” projected by Theo Wiedersphan, today housing, respectively the “Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul”, “Memorial do Rio Grande do Sul”, and “Santander Cultural”. The analysis occurs in three moments: the full operation, the disuse, and the new project, signed by Ediolanda Liedke, Nico and Ceres Rocha, and Roberto Loeb, and privileges topics of composition instead of stylistic ones. Chapter I points a quick overview on the Alfândega Square and its surroundings, followed by biographical informations about Wiedersphan. Chapters II, III, and IV develop three case studies. Chapter V brings comparisons and some conclusions about the buildings. A quick reflection about the theorical-methodological references is proposed on annex.

By bringing to light the figure, the designs and works of architect and assistant salesian (religious layman) Domenico Delpiano (1844-1920), this research aims to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of the architecture of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth centuries in South America, specifically the period of the years 1883 and 1920, respectively, the date of arrival of the professional in Brazil and his death in Sao Paulo. An examination of his work, all designed and built for the Society of Saint Francis de Sales and the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, will be based on knowledge gained from each chapter of this study. The understanding of salesian pedagogy and its repercussion on the spatial structure of school buildings, the identification and characterization of the architecture of eclecticism and the presentation of Domenico Delpiano and his compositional method and projectual allow the construction of analytical criteria for the critical review of two of his works the city of Sao Paulo.
Ao trazer a luz a figura, os projetos e as obras do arquiteto e coadjutor salesiano (religioso leigo) Domenico Delpiano (1844-1920), a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo contribuir para o conhecimento e para a compreensão da arquitetura do final do século XIX e início do século XX na América do Sul, mais precisamente no período compreendido pelos anos de 1883 e 1920, respectivamente, data da chegada do profissional no Brasil e de sua morte em São Paulo. O exame de suas obra, todas projetadas e construídas para a Pia Sociedade de São Francisco de Sales e para o Instituto das Filhas de Maria Auxiliadora, será feito a partir dos conhecimentos adquiridos em cada um dos capítulos deste estudo. A compreensão da pedagogia salesiana e o seu rebatimento na estrutura espacial dos edifícios escolares, a identificação e caracterização das Arquiteturas do Ecletismo e a apresentação de Domenico Delpiano e de seu método compositivo e projetual permitirão a construção de critérios analíticos para o exame crítico de duas de suas obras na cidade de São Paulo.

Documents and analyzes 34 representative houses of this period. Stresses the importance of studying the architecture of the coffee bourgeoisie, and points to the need for awareness and preservation of this heritage as historical and architectural document.

The text makes some comparisons between this complex and other similar plans in Brazil and in foreign countries, in order to recognize its models and references and to observe Barreiros role as one of the several watering-places built in Brazil between 1920 and 1950, a period of introduction and adaptation of international urbanistic ideas and of debate between ecletic and modern architecture in Brazil.

Full textA presente tese tem como objecto o estudo da produção arquitectónica projectada e edificada sensivelmente entre 1895 e 1925 no Porto e na região Norte de Portugal. Trata-se de uma época de profundas mudanças no panorama da arquitectura portuguesa na qual são definidas as diferentes correntes ideológico-disciplinares que têm determinado as diversas questões que marcaram os séculos XIX e XX. Até hoje a arquitectura portuense e nortenha deste período tem sido reduzida na historiografia arquitectónica portuguesa à obra de alguns arquitectos, verificando-se a ausência de estudos transversais à produção arquitectónica e à cultura disciplinar deste período que estabeleçam uma leitura contextual e não objectual da produção arquitectónica visada. Por este motivo, estabelece-se nesta tese um reenquadramento da arquitectura portuense e nortenha do Eclectismo no panorama cultural e profissional da arquitectura dos séculos XIX e XX, elencando os diversos projectistas activos no contexto local e situando-os no seio das correntes disciplinares internacionais e das questões que marcam o debate arquitectónico português. Da mesma forma, é identificado o contributo da arquitectura do Eclectismo para a definição contemporânea da imagem da cidade. Propõe-se uma análise da produção arquitectónica erudita realizada no Porto e na sua região de influência baseada numa inventariação extensiva da arquitectura do ecletismo no território em estudo, documentando a actividade dos agentes nela envolvidos, identificando a sua produção arquitectónica e as características das suas obras. A investigação é feita seja através do estudo de fontes primárias auxiliado pelo cruzamento de informações recolhidas em fontes impressas da época, seja através da análise da bibliografia que recentemente tem vindo a trazer algumas luzes sobre temas específicos, seja através da inventariação e observação dos imóveis ainda existentes. Neste âmbito, é de sublinhar a relevância da identificação de autorias dos diversos projectos e obras pela comparação de elementos gráficos e arquitectónicos. A organização interna deste trabalho permite identificar os momentos e questões que definem a arquitectura do Eclectismo no território em análise, os principais arquitectos que marcam o seu panorama profissional e as diferentes correntes ideológico-disciplinares que caracterizam o debate em torno da arquitectura e da cidade. O estudo da arquitectura edificada ao longo de dois dos principais eixos urbanos que marcam o desenvolvimento da cidade do Porto durante o período em estudo permite identificar o modo como diferentes projectistas e clientelas se confrontam com contextos urbanos e programáticos semelhantes.
ABSTRACT: The object of the present thesis is the architectural production designed and built between 1895 and 1925 in Porto and the North of Portugal. This is a time of profound changes in the panorama of Portuguese architecture in which the different ideological/disciplinary trends that determine the various issues that mark the twentieth century are defined. To date, the architecture of Porto and Northern Portugal of this period has been reduced in Portuguese architectural historiography to the work of some architects who, by the absence of transversal studies to the architectural production and the disciplinary culture of this period, are commonly considered as isolated paradigmatic figures. For this reason, this thesis establishes a re-framing of the eclectic architecture of Porto and Northern Portugal in the cultural and professional panorama of twentieth century architecture, listing the various architectural designers active in the local context and placing them within the international disciplinary trends and the issues that mark the Portuguese architectural debate. Likewise, in this thesis we identify the contribution of the architecture of eclecticism to the contemporary definition of today's urban image. We propose an analysis of the erudite architectural production carried out in Porto and its region of influence based on an extensive inventory of the eclectic architecture in the territory under study, documenting the activity of the agents involved in it, identifying their architectural production and its characteristics. The research is done either through the study of primary sources cross-referenced with information sourced in printed sources of the time, or through the analysis of the bibliography that has recently brought some light on specific themes, as well as through inventory and observation of the buildings that still exist today. In this context, it is worth highlighting the relevance of the identification of authorships to the several projects and works by comparing graphic and architectural elements. The internal organization of this work allows us to identify the moments and issues that define the architecture of eclecticism in the territory under analysis, the main architects that mark their professional panorama and the different ideological/disciplinary trends that characterize the debate around architecture and the city. The study of the architecture built along two of the main urban axes that mark the development of the city of Porto throughout the period under study allows us to identify how different architectural designers and clienteles are confronted with similar urban and programmatic contexts.

Full textA presente dissertação é resultado duma investigação sobre a obra do arquiteto Edmundo Tavares no Funchal. O trabalho realizado tem como intuito a conclusão do Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura e Urbanismo, pela Universidade Fernando Pessoa. A obra deste arquiteto na cidade do Funchal é de importância maior, e pouco divulgada, nomeadamente face ao legado que esta constitui, e do corolário do mesmo, no progresso da arquitetura moderna na Ilha da Madeira. O primordial objetivo desta dissertação é levantar e analisar a produção arquitetónica do autor nos anos em que viveu no Funchal - 1932 a 1939 - particularmente através do levantamento arquivístico, tão exaustivo quanto possível, da documentação administrativa e da produção escrita com ela relacionada, sustentando essa análise numa contextualização histórica alargada. Esta investigação permitiu perceber e precisar documentalmente um percurso estilístico próprio, e uma produção grandemente ignorada. Numa fase de mudança de tendências arquitetónicas, Edmundo Tavares consegue ser um caso típico e ao mesmo tempo único da arquitetura portuguesa na década de 30 do século XX. The following dissertation is the result of the study of the work of the architect Edmundo Tavares in Funchal. The research conducted concludes my integrated master's degree program in Architecture and Urban Planning, followed at Fernando Pessoa University. The legacy left by this architect on Funchal is often underestimated and is poorly known, all the more so in face of the bulk of his production, and its consequences, bearing a substantial value on the evolution of the modern architecture on Madeira island. The foremost goal of this thesis is to list and analyze the architectural production of the architect in the years that he lived in Funchal - from 1932 to 1939 - particularly through archive survey, as thorough as possible, of administrative documentation related to his works, as well as his written testimony on architecture, and to ground an analysis on a broad historical context. The research allowed an understanding of a personal stylistic path and a largely ignored architectural heritage, and provided objective information about it. In a moment of changing architectural trends, Edmundo Tavares manages to be simultaneously a typical and a unique case within Portuguese architecture of the 1930's.

Full textThe interior design is a fundamental dimension of modern architecture that is interested in the disappearing of the barriers between the interior and exterior, in the space continuity, in the transparency, in the reduction of the walls and in the flexibility of the spaces; all that under the regency of a unique and harmonious spirit, led by the architect. This work, then, analyses the designs created for the rooms of some of the well-known houses produced specially between 1930 and 1950, and intends to establish the possible relations of this production among the contemporaries and from them with their historical antecedents. The starting point is the initial understanding that there are different ways of dealing with the presented subject. The insertion of this variable, the interior design, extends the spectrum of the analysis of modern architecture, enabling a more including and complete vision of its production, and also searches and organizes the material related to the subject. The option for the residential theme is a consequence of the importance it takes in the period, establishing itself as a preponderant program and valuable field of experimenting of ideas. The houses are those from the elite, not only economical, but also cultural, willing to sponsor and identify to the architectural avant guard, and the focus of the analysis falls on the social and representative rooms.

Full textLina Bo Bardi and Lucio Costa were brazilian important intelectual-architects of the 20th century. Their pathways, very differents in their principles and in their causes, have a lot in common on their effects. Relating the importance of their public actions in all the aspects concerning intelligence and architecture have been the object of lots of new researches, with renewed interest. In this aspect, we present our version of their actions, developed in art and in technique - antique or modern -, in political and social foreground, in everyday life and urban life, and, to say one word, architecture. The intention is to locate and identify the differences and the common points of actions in their trajectories and also make comments concerning what was happening among them or in spite of them. In their history context, the adventures and, most of all, the discontentments that they have been through - and they were many. But they reacted and carried on. The impassioned intelligence together with the cheer to labor on is impressive. The chapters that are named by specific works tend to be a bit zig-zagging. They jump from works to facts in the attemp to explain technical processes and historical facts in which this works are inserted.

Full textClosely linked to the Romanticism, the outbreak of the revivalism that was spread for almost all the countries of Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century created a different and emblematic style in Portugal, the Neomanuelino. This style had a symbolic reading in Brazil in the last three decades as an image of a power here represented, which core of National celebration concluded the philosophic and politic charism of its representation. This style, when retook Manuelino\'s characteristics (sixteenth century), was also retaking an important symbology of the National past, in which it looked for reaffirmation at the end of the nineteenth century because of the Nationalist spirit that involved everybody. Then, in this living scene, the architecture was the language that better represented the signs of the past, becoming a signing reference for the feelings of freedom and euphoria of the new time. Witnesses of this, the Portuguese Cabinets of Reading in Brazil, were urban references accorded to the social aspirations of the epoch, ransoming with it building the lusitanian memories in the formation of the National identity, which the history was its support as files of the urban memories. Our goal was the identification of this style, the Neomanuelino in Brazil, its social justification and its National identity present in the panorama of the Eclectic manifestations that characterized the passage of the century, considering the typology and the insertion of the building in the urban space. We defined as panorama for the research the port towns in which it can be observed the identification with the Portuguese immigration, approaching four buildings for its comprehension: The Real Portuguese Cabinet of Reading of Rio de Janeiro, The Portuguese Cabinet of Reading of Recife, The Portuguese Cabinet of Reading of Salvador and The Portuguese Center of Santos.

Full textErnesto Korrodi, even though Swiss born, is much appraised as Portuguese for his remarkable role in the defense of the built heritage, national history and culture, being one of the most important architects of his time in Portugal and, certainly, one who, operating from the interior of the country, has reached more success nationally. However, public recognition for the work developed is still below the rightly deserved, by reason of insufficient disclosure of his life and work. The starting point for the fulfillment of a biography is the acknowledgement of the traits of his personality, his pedagogical action as both a professor of industrial education and a sculpture teacher and finally, his historical-archaeological studies of national monuments and the architectural work carried out. Hence, this would forcefully be a thorough investigation that could fill in the gaps of what has already been learned from the scarce though valuable bibliography already published. This biographical work on Ernesto Korrodi is the result of a rigorous bibliographical research, with consultation and study of documents, correspondence, projects, books, newspapers and magazines of the time. It also included trips to Switzerland, Italy and to the most secluded places in the country; sites where he has passed or left his mark in the local built heritage. New revelations, detailed clarification of less evident facts, and rectification of some publicized inaccuracies about the course of life and the work that constitute his legacy are the gratifying corollary of the commitment placed into this purpose.
