The equine bicipital apparatus corresponds to one of the structures associated with the called equine shoulder and the pathologies described in this region generated mainly lameness altering athletic performance of the specimen, that at two years old, it is vitally important because it starts with your sports training for equestrian competitions. The conformation of the bicipital apparatus is composed of all anatomical structures associated with equine shoulder, giving rise to the height of the glenoid process of the scapula, along the brachial biceps muscle, whose proximal area is completely strong and has a lobed structure with an isthmus between the lobes. This tendon continues through mixing muscle brachial fascia of the forelimb and the extensor carpi radial, thus coordinating the joint of the shoulder, elbow and carpal movement. Also as associated structures are the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles which provide lateral support, caudal and medial joint together the subscapularis. Ultrasonography measurements in a number of 17 were performed in a cranial caudal longitudinal and transverse as appropriate, which were recorded using abbreviations in each, per limb; right and left on a sample size of 10 animals. With all the data we proceeded to make pictures statistical comparison was subdivided to show the results for each specific objective with measurements limb prior right and left supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscle using the same comparison in the origin and the area of the shoulder. A final summary table comparing allowed sex as a limb and no significant differences between limbs or sex was observed. Only the variable (Esp LMTB Cr-Ca) (IST) by limb showed statistically significant differences. It was thus possible to obtain reference values of the structures that make up the bicipital apparatus which could be used when evaluating thoroughbred they are preparing to start their training at two years old, the characteristics of these structures they are not dependent of the limb or sex of the animal.
Rodríguez, Vizcaíno María Jesús. "Estudio anatómico, ecográfico, tomográfico e imagen por resonancia magnética de la articulación temporomandibular del caballo / Anatomy ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of teh equine temporomandibula joint." Doctoral thesis, Universidad de Murcia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/10987.
Full textThe equine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex anatomical region which has a great influence on the horse's performance. Ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging allow the assessment of the articular components avoiding the superimposition of the adjacent osseous structures as occur on the radiographic views. Reports concerning the use of these techniques in the equine TMJ are limited. The aim of this Thesis was to study in detail the anatomy and the ultrasonographic, CT and MRI anatomy of the equine TMJ. The equine TMJ has its own peripheral vascular supply and is related to vital structures such as the middle ear and mandibular nerve. These relationships can explain many of the non-specific symptoms described in TMJ pathologies. For TMJ ultrasonography, 3 approaches, lateral, caudal and rostral, are used to evaluate the lateral aspect of the joint. CT is the method of choice to study TMJ bony components and adjacent structures, being the sagittal and transverse planes the most informative planes. By MRI (SE T1, T2* and PD fat-suppression sequences), bone and soft tissues of the TMJ are assessed simultaneously, obtaining more information from the oblique sagittal and transverse planes.

Full textPathologies affecting mastication and dental occlusion are very common in the cat and always requieres assesment of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sustented in diagnostic imaging techniques. The TMJ of the cat represents a technical challenge to the radiographer due to the complex anatomy of the carnivore´s skull and to the overposition of structures in conventional radiology. Thus, the use of other diagnostic modalitys such as ultrasonography (USG), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be a better alternative to diagnose TMJ related pathologies. A deep knowledge of the tridimensional and sectional anatomy of the TMJ and related structures is a prerequisite for a correct interpretation of the images obtained by those diagnostic techniques.

The vision reestablishment in caractous patients is an important goal for ophthalmologists. New surgical techniques, such as phacoemulsification, have bee develped and improved to achive better therapeutics results. Nevertheless, some types of caracts, such as the senile, are considered a real challenge for surgeons, mainly for its hard nucleus, fragile capsule and dense or liquefied cortex. The ultrasonographic lens evaluation preview to phacoemulsification provides important information regarding its aspects and sizes, leading to the estabilishment of safer surgical strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the echographics aspects of the senile cataractous lens of dogs and its correlation to phacoemulsification parameters. It has been concluded that the mode B echography is helpful for the opacities location prediction; however, it does not provide conclusive data regarding the lens hardness. Also, that the lens biometry does not offer consistent data regarding the surgical aspects of lens during phacoemulsification

Full textDiagnostic ultrasound is one of the preferred diagnostic tool for the evaluation of gastro-intestinal disorders in cats. In this doctoral thesis, the results of three different studies carried out using conventional and contrast enhanced ultrasonography for the evaluation of the gastro-intestinal tract of normal cats and cats affected by gastrointestinal disorders. The goal of the first study was to measure the thickness of the different intestinal layers in clinically normal cats. The thickness of the mucosal layer was significantly greater in the duodenum and jejunum, because of the greater size of intestinal villi. The submucosal and muscular layers were significantly thicker in the ileum, because of the abundant lymphoid aggregates and the physiological role of anatomical barrier between the small and large intestine, respectively. The second study was carried out as a collaboration between one Italian and one American center. The aim of the study was to measure ultrasonographically the thickness of the intestinal muscular layer in cats with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and in cats with intestinal neoplasia. A thickened intestinal muscular layer was more frequently observed in cats with IBD but the thickness of this layer was not helpful in distinguishing cats affected by IBD or intestinal neoplasia. The aim of the third study was to describe the pattern of ultrasonographic contrast enhancement in cats with thickened intestinal muscular layer associated with IBD. In all cats with IBD, the increased thickness of the intestinal muscular layer was poorly associated with contrast enhancement compared to the other intestinal layers. Results confirm that thickening of the intestinal muscular layer in cats with IBD is not associated with significant increased vascularization of this intestinal layer.

Full textDuring normal pregnancy central and peripherical haemodynamic changes occurr to meet the increased nutrient demand of the growing feto-placental unit. Microbubble-based contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) offers a new opportunity to monitor and quantify utero-placental perfusion in normal and abnormal pregnancy. Echocardiography have been widely used in human medicine to evaluate maternal cardiac structural and functional adaptation to pregnancy. The aims of this prospectic study were to apply for the first time a II generation sonographic contrast medium (Sonovue®) to quantify utero-placental perfusion during equine normal pregnancy, evaluating the effects on feto-placental and maternal well-being, and to describe echocardiographic changes in cardiac morphological and functional parameters, focusing on left ventricle function, during normal pregnancy in the mare. Two healthy Standardbred mares were evaluated by serial sonographic examinations during pregnancy, using two-dimensional ultrasonography, utero-placental unit contrast-enhanced ultrasound, uterine arteries Doppler and echocardiography, including two-dimensional, M-mode, Doppler and Tissue Doppler Imaging. Newborn foals and fetal membranes were also evaluated. CEUS allowed monitoring and quantification of utero-placental perfusion pattern and demonstrated an increase in uterine microcirculation blood-flow during pregnancy; no microbubbles were detected in the umbilical vein and fetal compartments and no adverse effects on fetal and maternal well-being were observed. In this study, maternal cardiac haemodynamic changes were observed during normal pregnancy, including an increase in heart rate and cardiac output, an increase in left atrium dimensions and changes in left ventricular filling flow and tissue Doppler velocity waves.

Full textThe present work represents the first application of CEUS in some of the most overspread exotic pets and in reptiles in general. We investigated liver and spleen perfusion in 10 rabbits, and 10 ferrets other than the liver perfusion in 8 green iguanas. The technique was easily performed in the mammals, and results were similar to the one already reported for small mammals. More variability was highlighted for the spleen in both species and for the rabbit compared to the ferret. Small modifications were necessary to adapt the protocol to the longer phases occurring in the iguana. Curves obtained for this species were characterized by smaller peaks and longer TTP, and wash out phase was not complete over the 600 seconds of the study. Liver perfusion was further investigated in the iguana by a dynamic contrast enhanced CT scan, a pioneer study in reptile medicine. The technique was easily performed under general anesthesia. MDC diffusion was evaluated by HU variations both in the aorta and in the hepatic vessels and parenchyma at the same time, and time-intensity curves were determined. The shape of the curves was repeated in all the animals in a very similar way, even if few variation were noticed, probably as a consequence of the strong dependence of reptile metabolism and liver function both to intrisic and extrinsic factors. The whole protocol was applied in two pathological iguanas and one pathological ferret, in order to investigate clinical potentiality of the techniques. Even if no conclusion can be derived, the final section of the thesis should represent a cue for future studies.
