Une modification de la position théorique collective des Annales, ne serait-ce qu'à cause de l'influence qu'elles ont exercée dans le domaine de la recherche historique, est un événement digne de retenir l'attention des historiens. Le pouvoir des Annales a été à la fois intellectuel et institutionnel. Leur réputation sur le plan intellectuel s'est construite à l'origine grâce aux innovations méthodologiques et historiographiques de leurs fondateurs, Marc Bloch et Lucien Febvre, que vinrent renforcer les travaux d'une seconde génération de praticiens avec, entre autres, Fernand Braudel, Ernest Labrousse, Jacques Le Goff, Jean Meuvret, Pierre Goubert, Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie. Mais le pouvoir des Annales n'a jamais tenu uniquement à l'aura des réalisations de leurs représentants les plus doués. Pour le monde extérieur ces historiens, par leur attachement à l'École des Hautes Études ou à la Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, ont généralement été perçus comme les membres d'une « école ». Concentrés géographiquement et institutionnellement, animés par un puissant esprit de corps et d'appartenance à un lignage intellectuel et universitaire, ils constituent le groupe le plus important et le plus soudé de chercheurs en histoire rémunérés sur fonds publics que l'on puisse trouver dans le monde.

Abstract:

La thèse est divisée en quatre parties : la première (370 pages) porte sur l'école des hautes études commerciales, sa fondation, son évolution de 1881 à 1981 (concours, enseignement et reformes, corps professoral) et les élèves (origines sociales et géographiques, scolarité). La seconde (291 pages) concerne les carrières suivies par les HEC de 1881 aux années 1980. Elle porte sur les secteurs d'activité, sur les entreprises qui embauchent des HEC et les fonctions qu'ils occupent. Cette partie s'achève sur une étude de la mobilité sociale des HEC et des facteurs qui ont permis cette mobilité. La troisième (340 pages) s'attache à l'évolution des méthodes de gestion dans la France du XXe siècle, et le rôle que les HEC ont pu y jouer. L'analyse met plus particulièrement l'accent sur l'apparition et le développement de la fonction commerciale, devenue marketing dans les années 1950. La dernière partie (271 pages) regroupe quatre études de cas qui ont pour point commun de mettre en lumière le rôle joue par quelques HEC jugés significatifs. Les entreprises étudiées sont Saint-Gobain, le printemps, la BNCI et la Shell - française, cette dernière à travers la vie de Louis Devaux, président de 1960 à 1968
The thesis is divided into four parts : the first part (370 pages) describes the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales, its launching, its development from 1881 to 1981 (competitive examination, content of education and reforms, faculty) and also the graduates. The second part (291 pages) sets out the careers of HEC graduates from 1881 to the 1980s : economic range of activity, corporations hiring HEC graduates, functions they took up. A last study at the end of this part pertains to the social mobility of HEC graduates and the factors explaining the up and down changes. The subject of the third part (340 pages) is the development of new management methods in France in the 20th century, and the part taken by the HEC graduates in this development. The study emphasizes the coming out and the spreading of marketing, more especially from the 1950s. - the final part (271 pages) comprises four case studies, which show the role of a few representative HEC graduates in four major French companies : Saint-Gobain, le Printemps, BNCI, Shell française

Abstract:

Ce travail explique les transformations de la division du travail intellectuel dans les sciences sociales à travers l’étude des faits économiques au sein de l’EHESS et de son ancêtre la VIe Section.Créée grâce au soutien de la fondation Rockefeller en 1947, la VIe Section entend répondre aux importants besoins d’expertise économique issus de la reconstruction d’après-guerre. Les « économistes réalistes » y revendiquent alors une approche pluraliste des faits économiques selon laquelle l’étude des structures de l’économie s’appuie sur des méthodologies issues d’autres sciences sociales.Rapidement, cependant, cette approche est considérée par les mécènes de la section comme trop académique et les tentatives de rapprochement avec les pouvoirs politique et économique échouent au milieu des années 1950. En outre, la refonte de l’agenda scientifique de la VIe Section autour du programme d’étude des aires culturelles, grâce au soutien de la fondation Rockefeller dans le contexte de guerre froide culturelle, favorise d’autres approches des faits économiques, en particulier celles de l’histoire économique et de l’anthropologie économique. Dès lors, la discipline économique marque le pas dans la section : seuls 6 économistes sont élus parmi les plus de 150 directeurs d’études qui le sont entre 1958 et 1972.Au milieu des années 1970, la nouvelle direction de l’institution assure le renouveau de la discipline économique autour de la modélisation. Cette approche, tournée vers des critères de validation scientifique internationaux, éloigne de facto les économistes des autres chercheurs en sciences sociales
This work analyzes the transformations in the division of intellectual labor in social science by considering the study of economic facts within the Sixth Section and the EHESS in the postwar era. Created with the support of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1947, the Sixth Section was meant to meet the need for economic expertise during reconstruction. First, “realistic economists”, then dominant within the institution, advocated a pluralistic approach to economic facts and used the methodology of other social sciences. Very quickly, however, this approach was considered too removed from the patrons’ concerns and the attempts to bring economists closer to political and economic powers failed in the mid-1950s. In addition, the reorganization of the scientific agenda of the Sixth Section around the so-called “areas study program” promoted other approaches to economic facts, in particular economic history and economic anthropology, accentuating the decline of economics at EHESS. In the mid-1970s, however, the institution's new leadership helped the revival of economics around theoretical modeling. Based on international scientific standards, this approach estranged economists from other social science disciplines

À partir d'un travail qualitatif approfondi réalisé au sein de quatre Grandes Écoles françaises (Sciences Po, Ecole polytechnique, École normale supérieure, École des Hautes Études Commerciales), cette thèse contribue à la compréhension, à travers le regard des étudiants étrangers scolarisés dans les Grandes Écoles étudiées des dynamiques d'internationalisation qui façonnent et recomposent ce segment particulier de l'enseignement supérieur français. La thèse adopte ainsi un double point de vue : on s'intéresse aux stratégies d'adaptation que les étudiants mettent en œuvre face aux exigences qui sont celles des institutions françaises, d'une part ; sans oublier, d'autre part, que ces dernières développent quant à elle des stratégies d'ajustement pour faire fructifier le capital scolaire de ces élites étudiantes qu'elles sont appelées à accueillir tout en garantissant l'excellence de leurs curricula. L'analyse comparée des quatre institutions a permis de montrer les enjeux de légitimité qui se cachent derrière les processus d'internationalisation et invite à opposer deux modèles contrastés : un pôle constitué par les Grandes Écoles d'État que sont l'École Normale Supérieure et l'École Polytechnique, à l'internationalisation plus lente et limitée ; et un pôle plus libéral et autonome représenté par l'École des Hautes Études Commerciales et Sciences Po, écoles plus promptes et radicales dans la captation de ressources internationales et dans la mise en œuvre de stratégies d'ouverture afin de conquérir une place plus légitime dans un champ national des Grandes Écoles
Starting from a thorough qualitative work conducted within the four French “Grandes Écoles” (École Polytechnique, École Normale Supérieure, École des Hautes Études Commerciales, Institut d’Études Politiques), this thesis contributes - through the attention of the foreign students attending the “Grandes Écoles” under scrutiny along with that of the administrative staff of those schools - to the understanding of the international dynamics making up and recomposing this particular side of the French Higher Education system. In this respect, the thesis takes into account a two-fold approach: on the one hand, a survey of the adjustment strategies (individual and collective) which the students use when facing the French institutions requirements without forgetting, on the other hand, that the latter develop adjustment strategies in order to capitalize on the school assets of these student elites they are marked out to receive while vouching for the excellence of their curricula. The comparative analysis of the four institutions enabled us to show the legitimacy stakes underlying the internationalisation processes leading to the opposition of two contrasting patterns: on the one hand, the leading state schools such as the École Normale Supérieure and the École Polytechnique, showing a slower limited internationalisation and, on the other hand, the École des Hautes Études Commerciales, and the Institut d’Études Politiques

Abstract:

La biographie intellectuelle de François Picavet (1851-1921) fournit l’occasion d’explorer les débuts de l’histoire de la philosophie médiévale en tant que discipline institutionnalisée, en France, de 1880 à 1920. Figure oubliée du médiévisme philosophique, Picavet fut maître de conférence à l’EPHE (section des sciences religieuses) dès 1888, puis directeur d’études à partir de 1907, secrétaire du Collège de France en 1904 et chargé de cours en histoire des philosophies médiévales à la Faculté des lettres de la Sorbonne dès 1906.Le parcours académique de Picavet s’inscrit dans un contexte particulier, qui voit l’histoire de la philosophie médiévale s’implanter de façon structurée et stable dans l’enseignement supérieur français. De même que d’autres disciplines institutionnalisées, l’histoire de la philosophie médiévale tire profit de la nécessité d’une réforme profonde du système universitaire, articulée dans les sphères politiques et scientifiques dès les années 1860 puis prolongée sous l’impulsion de la IIIe République, et qui aboutit à l’émergence de nouvellesstructures institutionnelles dans l’enseignement supérieur français (fondation de l’EPHE en 1868, création de nouveaux enseignements à la Sorbonne, dont une charge de cours en histoire de la philosophie médiévale en 1906). L’historiographie originale de Picavet restreint la signification des questions philosophiques médiévales qui demeurent liées à leur contexte historique d’origine: chaque système philosophique est ainsi l’expression partielle d’une civilisation donnée, au même titre que les expressions scientifiques, artistiques et artisanales que celle-ci est en mesure de produire et qui la caractérisent
The intellectual biography of François Picavet (1851-1921) is an opportunity to explore the early days of the history of mediaeval philosophy as an institutionalised discipline in France from 1880 to 1920. A forgotten figure of the study of mediaeval philosophy, Picavet was a lecturer at EPHE (Religious Sciences department) from 1888 and director of studies from 1907, secretary of the Collège de France in 1904 and lecturer in the history of mediaeval philosophy at the Arts Faculty of the Sorbonne from 1906 onwards. Picavet’s academic career took place within a particular context in which the history of mediaeval philosophy came to be established in a structured and stable manner in French higher education. Like other institutionalised disciplines, the history of mediaeval philosophy benefited from the need for deep-seated reform of the university system, which was expressed in political and scientific circles from around 1860 and continued under the Third Republic, resulting in the emergence of new institutional structures in French higher education (the foundation of EPHE in 1868 and the creation of new courses at the Sorbonne, including a history of mediaeval philosophy course in 1906). Picavet’s original historiography confines the significance of mediaeval philosophical questions, which remain bound to the historical context in which they originated: thus, every philosophical system is the partial expression of a given civilisation, just like the scientific, artistic and craft related expressions which it produces and which characterise it

Depuis sa fondation en 1868, l’Ecole pratique des Hautes Etudes a attiré des générations de chercheurs. C’est au séminaire de Gaston Paris (1839-1903), consacré à la philologie romane, que viennent parfaire leur formation les savants roumains, Ovide Densusianu et Sextil Puscariu, auxquels est consacré l’essentiel de la thèse. Leur soif de savoir s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une tentative d’émancipation culturelle et politique caractérisée par la volonté de souligner leurs origines romanes. Après ce préambule, la thèse aborde son sujet propre : les relations du fondateur de la Romania avec ses élèves roumains et son rôle dans la formation des deux futures personnalités fortes de la Roumanie. Un grand nombre de documents, souvent inédits, jettent une vive lumière sur la relation qu’entretenait G. Paris avec ses élèves, relation exigeante, mais marquée par une modération empreinte de bienveillance. La thèse se clôt par des Annexes (120 documents) et une importante Bibliographie (110 pages)
Since its founding in 1868 the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Practical School of High Education) has attracted generations of researchers. The Romanian scholars Ovide Densusianu and Sextil Puscariu, to who this thesis is dedicated, attended the course taught by Gaston Paris (1839-1903) to complete their training. Their thirst for knowledge is part of an attempt at cultural and political emancipation marked by the desire to underscore their Roman roots. After this preamble the thesis addresses its main subject, the relation of the founder of Romania with his Romanian students and his role in the training of these 2 powerful Romanian personalities. A large number of documents, many previously unpublished, shed a bright light on the relation between G. Paris and his students, a demanding relation, but also marked by moderation and kindness. The thesis ends with Appendices (120 documents) and an important set of references (110 pages)

Abstract:

Nos travaux de recherche portent sur l’étude de l’évolution et des changements survenus au programme de baccalauréat en administration des affaires offert par l’Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales et le baccalauréat spécialisé en administration de l’Université du Québec à Montréal au cours de la période couvrant les années 1968 à 1988. Ces deux institutions universitaires offrent une formation en sciences de l’administration et font partie du marché universitaire francophone de Montréal. Notre hypothèse générale est à l’effet que les changements et les transformations survenus dans ces universités sont causés par des facteurs d’ordre structurel comme ceux de la stratification des universités en une hiérarchie basée sur le statut et le prestige et celui de la dynamique concurrentielle entre ces universités au niveau de la ressource étudiante. Nous avons étudié les effets de ces facteurs sur l’évolution du champ disciplinaire des sciences de l’administration en mettant en évidence les moyens et les stratégies empruntés par chacune de ces institutions en regard de l’acquisition de la ressource étudiante et en vue de se positionner favorablement l’une par rapport à l’autre sur le marché. Les méthodes d’analyse utilisées sont d’une part, l’analyse secondaire de données statistiques sur les taux de sélection et d’attraction (de 1978 à 1988) et d’autre part, l’analyse qualitative de la documentation pertinente concernant les objectifs du programme, la structure et le contenu du curriculum et les politiques d’admission (de 1968 à 1988). Cette recherche a contribué à mettre en évidence les phénomènes suivants: l’évolution des programmes en administration s’est faite à l’intérieur d’un cadre précis, défini par les standards académiques reconnus dans le milieu universitaire et s’appliquant à l’ensemble des programmes de premier cycle; le choix des alternatives stratégiques s’offrant aux responsables pour augmenter ou maintenir la position des programmes au sein de la stratification universitaire est limité par ces mêmes standards et, finalement l’évolution et les changements survenant dans les programmes universitaires ne s’expliquent pas uniquement par les exigences du marché du travail.

Abstract:

La première partie présente les adaptations nécessaires de l’Ecole Nationale de la France d’Outre-Mer (ENFOM) pendant la décennie qui suit sa réouverture en 1944-1945. La création de l’Union française oblige le ministère de la FOM et la direction de l’ENFOM à réformer l’école pour recycler les formations dispensées. Ces évolutions cherchent à définir le nouveau profil de l’élève et de l’administrateur idéaux. Ces profils sont à la fois empreints des traditions colonialistes de l’entre-deux-guerres et des nouveaux enjeux insufflés depuis la conférence de Brazzaville. L’étude statistique des circulations des administrateurs de la FOM entre la France et ses différentes possessions outre-mer établit les principaux flux et leur accélération. La deuxième partie étudie l’évolution de l’ENFOM et de ses élèves de 1956 à 1963. L’ENFOM entre en tensions l’année de la promulgation de la loi-cadre, de l’africanisation de son recrutement et de la publication du manifeste Bleu d’outre-mer. L’esprit de corps est affaibli car des divisions générationnelles et idéologiques apparaissent. Les administrateurs de la FOM commencent à être reclassés. Le cadre législatif leur est particulièrement favorable et facilite leur intégration au sein de carrières publiques métropolitaines et/ou africaines. Les organismes de la coopération y occupent une place importante comme le montre l’analyse statistique de l’ensemble de ces reclassements. The first part presents the required adaptations of the ENFOM during the decade after its reopening in 1944-1945. The creation of the Union française forces the french ministry for the overseas territories and the school administration to reform the ENFOM to retrain the courses. These adaptations try to define the new profile of the perfect student and the perfect officer. These profiles are filled with colonialist traditions of the inter-war period and with new issues inspired by Brazzaville Conference. The statistical study of colonial officers’ movements between France and overseas territories determine the main flows and their acceleration. The second part considers the ENFOM and students’ evolution from 1956 to 1963. The ENFOM comes under stress the year the framework law is promulgated, the recruitment is africanised and the Bleu outre-mer manifesto is published. The esprit de corps is weakened by a generational and an ideological opposition. Colonial officers start then to be reclassified. The legislative framework, which is to their advantage, facilitates their integration in the french and/or African public service. The statistical study of reclassifications as a whole proves the importance of cooperation agencies. ENFOM closes in 1958-1959 and immediatly replaced by the IHEOM. This institute is created to train african officers in Paris as quickly as possible for them to operate in the new states. The former mainland thus confirms its domination. Thanks to a great statistical study, the last part lists all the reclassifications of present or volontary absent colonial officers, judges and labour inspectors on the whole from Africa at the time of independence. These careers and movements last from 1964 to the beginning of the 21st century and rely on ENFOM networks. The statistical study takes into accountall the metropolitan officers and the 106 african officers of the last three promotions. Proud of their colonial and post-colonial careers, former colonial officers set up memorial strategies (novel, political responsibilities, publications of former student association destined for historian) for posterity and sometimes to defend their record. This research ends with bases for an analysis of the private career which often followed their public one

La troisième partie montre les terrains d'entente et les points de mésentente entre l'historiographie polonaise et l'école des Annales, passe ensuite aux facteurs qui favorisaient les relations et étudie les manifestations de la collaboration
The thesis is divided into three parties which focuse on the French-Polish relationships between the social sciences in their material. Political and intelectual dimension. The first part describes the number of Polish researchers arriving to France and the number of French scientists going to Poland. As well as the institutions involved in the coopération, its organisation and the material obstacles of the relationships. The second part starts with a description of Polish-French scientifical relationships between 1944 and 1993, focusing on the contacts between the Polish researchers and 6th Section of EPHE. Moreover. The author analyses the political and ideological obstacles and the limits of coopération. The third part shows the points of understanding and misunderstanding between the Polish historians and l'école des Annales. Then, the author decribes the factors which intensified the relations and shows the numerous manifestations of the coopération

Abstract:

Born in Épinal, France, Marcel Israël Mauss, the nephew and a disciple of Émile Durkheim, was a sociologist whose work greatly influenced the nascent discipline of anthropology. After teaching ‘History of Religion and Uncivilised Peoples’ at the École pratique des hautes études from 1901 to 1931, he took up the chair of Sociology at the Collège de France. He is widely known for his study of the rites of exchange across cultures (‘Essai sur the don’, 1923–1924). In Mauss’s theory, the gift is seen as the result of an almost magical operation that goes beyond the sheer materiality of the object presented, engaging the receiver as well as the giver in a form of spiritual transaction.

Abstract:

Roland Barthes’s ‘Le discours de l’histoire’ was first published in France in 1967, in a journal sponsored by the École pratique des hautes études where he was teaching at the time. It appeared in English translations in 1970 and 1981, and soon came to rank as a source comparable to Hayden White’s Metahistory (1973) in so far as it proposed a radically new mode of analysing historical writings. This chapter explains the broad international context in which the article was initially produced, and subsequently gained its reputation. Although critical approaches to the language of historiography were hardly practised at all in France in the 1960s, a fellow member of the Hautes Études such as Le Roy Ladurie was already coming forward as a spokesman for the new methods of ‘quantitative history’. Barthes’s own critical procedure was, however, notably indebted to the discourse analysis of the French linguistician, Émile Benveniste. It is argued that Barthes’s stated preference for the ‘intelligible’ as opposed to the ‘real’ as a criterion for historical analysis is a logical outcome of his cultural and political stance at the time. His seemingly perverse categorisation of the approach of the nineteenth-century historian Augustin Thierry is an unfortunate consequence.

This chapter presents the first English translation of an essay that was originally presented in 1989 by Claude Lefort at the Colloquium on Latin America, sponsored by the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), organized by Daniel Pécault. In this essay, Lefort affirms his important thesis regarding the disembodiment of power in representative democracy and begins to elaborate institutional conditions for its modern practice. He emphasizes that representation must be supported by independent political organizing by social movements and dissenting groups within institutions such as labor unions, schools, and hospitals. He also emphasizes the importance of participation, understood distinctively neither as voting nor as taking to the streets but as a feature of political judgment that he terms a “capacity to understand the political game,” a feature that he considers to be lacking where there exist great divides between elite political actors as mass publics.

Born Alexandr Vladimirovich Koyranskiy (Александр Владимирович Койранский) in Taganrog, Russia, Alexandre Koyré moved to Paris, France, as a student where he was active, with varying degrees of involvement, as a professor at the École pratique des hautes études from 1922 until his death. He was appointed to the position of chair of the Department of History of Religious Thought in Modern Europe in 1932 and also taught at the Johns Hopkins University and the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study. Renowned for establishing the discipline of the history of science as it is known today, Koyré questioned in particular the value of scientific experimentation, arguing that such experimentation merely validated the presumptions previously intuited by subjective means. Koyré’s contribution to the field of philosophy of science is generally understood as an original weaving of specific, dynamic changes in religious beliefs and commitments and metaphysical views into his account of the discovery process. Thus, as Koyré suggested in From the Closed World to the Infinite Universe (1957), a thorough study of modern science should be firmly grounded in the history of religion and metaphysics.

The disciplinary range of Barthes’s work is unusually diverse, as is that of its reception. An energetic contributor to the human sciences in postwar France, Barthes is credited with a pivotal role in the emergence of interdisciplinarity. But Barthes was alert to its recuperation by the technocratic higher-education reforms of 1968, referring to ‘the myth of interdisciplinarity’. He was equally wary of a federation of disciplines that would leave each one comfortably unchanged, rather than overturning the intellectual landscape. A more fertile interdisciplinarity originates in Barthes’s intensive reading of Michelet in the sanatorium. It is tracked through his euphoric discovery of structuralism to his teaching at the École pratique des hautes études, and his idiosyncratic aspirations for a ‘peripatetic’ chair of literary semiology at the Collège de France. Barthes was interested in the historically shifting hierarchies of disciplines, noting the equal status of the trivium and quadrivium within the medieval septenium, and bemoaning the downgrading of language to mere instrumentality within the contemporary human sciences. Literature, which already contains within it all forms of knowledge, is proposed as a transformative discipline despite its current exclusion, a corrective for the refusal of the human sciences to pay attention to their discourse.

In the mid-19^th century, the great centers of philological and linguistic study in Europe were a handful of German universities that led the way in organizing doctoral training. In seminars guided by a senior professor, students presented papers on specialized topics and had them critiqued and queried. This chapter takes a close look at the nature of such training in Germany and France through the experience of one Leipzig doctoral student who went on to lecture in Paris and Geneva, Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913). The political and cultural relations between Germany and France in the two decades following the Franco-Prussian War and the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine colored and complicated the importation of the Germany doctoral training model in the various branches of the University of Paris, and not least in the section of the École Pratique des Hautes Études in which Saussure was hired to lecture on Gothic and Old High German, to a student body made up disproportionately of displaced Alsatians. So significant was Saussure’s impact on the institution that his teaching set the agenda for French doctoral training in linguistics and adjacent areas at least through the 1960s, and indeed across Europe and beyond – this despite the fact that he was never in a position to direct a single doctoral thesis himself. The chapter considers as well how the disciplinary identity of linguistics came to be formed in this period, and how it went on to develop over the ensuing decades.

Recent large-scale epidemics and pandemics have demonstrated the importance of engaging communities as partners in preventing, detecting and responding to public health emergencies. Community-based surveillance (CBS), which relies on communities to report public health information, can be an important part of effective, inclusive and accountable responses to humanitarian and public health emergencies, as well as long-term disease control. This brief offers key considerations for CBS programming to guide policymakers, public health officials, civil society organisations, health workers, researchers, advocates, and others interested in health surveillance. It is based on a rapid review of CBS guidance and social science literature.
