Abstract:
Biological invasions are a side effect of globalisation and human modification of natural systems. Invasive mosquitoes and the pathogens that they carry are leading causes of human suffering. Mosquito vectors of pathogens are often ecologically plastic and able to exploit human movements to disperse. As such they spread across wide geographical areas and are among the most successful species to have become invasive. Mosquito-borne pathogens have complex life cycles which involve a rich set of reservoir and vector hosts. They are evolutionarily very dynamic, ready to take advantage of new oppor

General scope. For much of human history the oceans have been considered incomprehensibly vast; an inexhaustible source of goods and services. Over the last century however, that paradigm has proved largely inaccurate. The ocean is in a state of crisis, caused primarily by human overexploitation. A rational reaction to the crisis is to limit fishing, often by designating swaths of the ocean as marine protected areas (MPAs). To be effective, it has been suggested that marine protected areas must cover between ten and thirty percent of the world’s oceans, ideally linked into MPA networks. Pr

Abstract:
A study conducted in Stave Reservoir, near Mission British Columbia, examined the linkages between flooded shoreline vegetation and associated periphyton and benthic communities in a coastal reservoir drawdown zone. Two native perennial species, woolgrass (Scirpus cyperinus) and lenticulate sedge (Carex lenticularis), and an annual agronomic species, fall rye (Secale cereale L.) were used in the study. A total of 108 pots containing either one of the plant species or barren substrate (i.e. no vegetation) were installed within three elevation bands in the inundated reservoir drawdown zon

Abstract:
Private Protected Areas (PPAs) are increasingly considered a promising complement topublic-run protected areas. Their rapid proliferation worldwide and increased adoption as policy tools, have made the PPA phenomenon one of the most important in current nature protection strategies. Nevertheless, there has been little scholarly attention paid to their emergence and the implications of their implementation, especially in Europe. This dissertation explores the genesis of PPAs as innovative institutional arrangements for conservation policies and investigates their suitability for enhancing natur

Abstract:
<p>Eastern black walnut (<i>Juglans nigra</i> L.) ranks among the most highly valued timber species in the central hardwood forest and across the world. This valuable tree fills a critical role in native ecosystems as a mast bearing pioneer on mesic sites. Along with other <i>Juglans</i> spp. (Juglandaceae), <i>J. nigra</i> is threatened by thousand cankers disease (TCD), an insect-vectored disease first described in 2009. TCD is caused by the bark beetle <i>Pityophthorus juglandis</i> Blackman (Corthylini) and the phytopathogenic fungus <i>Geosmithia morbida</i> Kol. Free. Ut. & Tiss. (Bionec
