The rational allocation of ecological and economic water is a topic of high interest for water resource sciences. Taking into consideration the difficulties to maintain the basic ecologic functions of rivers, we propose a calculation model for compensation for agricultural economic losses by restoration of the healthy eco-hydrological sequences of rivers. Firstly, healthy eco-hydrological sequence of rivers was constructed by assessing the response relationship between hydrological processes and ecological functions of ecological base flow of rivers. This research considered the content of trace elements (TE), including potentially toxic elements (PTE) in shale plays and deposits in various regions of the world. Their comparative analysis was carried out and the highest concentrations of PTE in the shales of some regions were revealed. The author notes that the destruction of organometallic compounds occurs during the development of shale hydrocarbon (HC) using horizontal drilling with hydraulic fracturing – injecting large volumes of chemicals while increasing the temperature. During such destruction processes, PTE can escape into the env

Abstract:
Natural systems are being degraded at an unprecedented rate, with rapid loss of biodiversity and an average temperature rise of almost 1.5˚C on pre-industrial levels in 2023. Most economists believe that these problems have arisen because the value of nature is not sufficiently considered in policy and economic decision-making. However, there are considerable differences in views as to how to ensure nature is appropriately factored into such decision-making. Opinions amongst economic experts generally fall into two camps: one aligns broadly with a branch of mainstream economics known as enviro

The increasing pressure of ecological disruption on people and on security means that ideas and policy on peace and security must increasingly address the need for ecological security. This paper poses five research questions concerning: (a) amplification of anti-microbial resistance (patho-gens that are increasingly drug-resistant); (b) the physiological consequences of pollution; (c) the loss of nature’s con-tribution to people’s well-being; (d) local and regional eco-logical tipping points; and (e) detri-mental organisms and pro-cesses that thrive in the rapidly changing planet. This summary discusses the need to implement green and progressive taxes in Latin America and the Caribbean in response to a triple planetary crisis that includes climate change, biodiversity loss, and water scarcity, exacerbated by marked regional inequalities. It argues that the region must lead tax reforms that address these challenges comprehensively, proposing specific taxes on the wealthiest and environmentally harmful practices. It emphasises the urgency of acting in a coordinated manner at both regional and global levels to ensure socio-ecological transitions that reconcile economic an

The Fraser River is a legacy to the economic, cultural, and ecological backbone of British Columbia. Draining more than a quarter of the province and supporting one of the largest Pacific salmon runs in the world, it is a globally renowned river. The Lower Fraser, defined as the ecoregion between Yale, BC and Metro Vancouver, contains some of the most important spawning and rearing habitat along the entire river. Decades of development have left the Lower Fraser facing numerous challenges, including extensive habitat loss, flooding, and water pollution. There is no comprehensive funding or man

Abstract:
The new field of ecological economics recognizes the importance of containing economic growth within the biophysical limits of the biosphere and the need for a new economic model that recognizes and maintains the diversity of functions and species in the planet’s ecosystems (Costanza and Daly 1987, Daly and Farley 2010). This module explains why the current economic model is leading to irreparable depletion of natural capital, and presents ecological economics as a viable alternative for achieving a fair and sustainable biodiversity economy.

In contrast with findings in climate science, economists often treat losses from natural disasters as statistically independent of one another. To better incorporate scientific insights into economic research, we introduce a methodology to identify spatial and temporal clusters in datasets on losses from natural disasters. We find that expected damage increases non-linearly with relative cluster size. Additionally, county-level damage is correlated with the damage experienced by other counties in the same cluster. Our findings suggest that accounting for clustering allows for a more complete u

Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), can significantly influence biodiversity conservation based on their design and implementation. While AfCFTA may encourage countries to strengthen environmental regulations in line with international agreements like the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and CITES, there are concerns that economic goals might overshadow ecological considerations. This could lead to industrial growth in agriculture and mining, risking deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution. Using a combination of qualitative
