Abstract Achieving ecologically sustainable societies necessitates fundamental social and cultural transformations. Religion has the potential to foster the required paradigm shifts in mindsets, behaviour and policy. Moreover, in many religious communities there is increasing engagement with questions of environment, climate change and ecological sustainability. This has led to an increasing corpus of literature engaging with the nexus between religion, environment, development and sustainability. Since the industrial revolution, people have adopted the linear development mode of “resting on the principal” to gain wealth through crazy plunder of nature despite severe pollution to the environment for human survival, which results in sharp conflict between man and nature. As ecological crisis arises, people begin to reflect on the industrial revolution profoundly. They start adopting the cycle development mode of “resting on the interest” and take active steps to build ecological civilization, which is not only a form of civilization but also a development concept.
