Full textEuropean heathlands were maintained by traditional agro-pastoral practices over the last 3000 years. Since 1950s, these traditional land uses have almost completely disappeared. As a result, heathland areas have been drastically reduced and have been overrun by grasses and woody species. Heathlands conservation requires consistent and permanent management action to control the natural succession. The ‘Trois Pignons’ forest (Fontainebleau, France) consists of a mosaic of heathlands and forests which are integrated into the Managed Biological Reserves (RBD). Since 1992, the managers of this RBD aim to maintain heathlands. In this context, we study in a first part, heathland vegetation dynamics at different spatial and temporal scales. Results show a gradual change from Ericaceae species in pure stand to a mosaic of grasses and Ericaceae, despite the application of measures to maintain this habitat in managed heathland. The development of grasses is correlated with thinness of the spatial variability of soil properties and the spatial variability of reforestation. In a second part, we assess changes in forest cover between 1946 and 2003. Results show the loss of 60% of heathlands during 1946–2003 associated to a similar increase in forest areas and the persistence of C. Vulgaris in coniferous stands and young mixed stand. We also study relationship between landscape spatio-temporal heterogeneity and biodiversity in mosaic-landscapes. The results indicate that in the areas of high spatio-temporal heterogeneity, a general increase is observed in species richness, in particular for vascular plants, bryophytes and carabids. The study demonstrates how spatial methods can contribute to the design of reliable management methods of habitats such as the heathlands, and enable us to offer recommendations as to how to better manage heathland semi-natural habitats of the Fontainebleau forest and elsewhere in Europe

Full textForest ecosystems affect air quality and climate, especially through the emissions and the reactions of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) with the atmospheric oxidants, known to generate Secondary Organic Aerosols (SOAs). This work aims to improve our knowledge on the processes involved in biogenic SOA formation and fate. Two field campaigns have been conducted in the Landes forest. In a first step, the measurement site was characterized by a statistical study of local meteorological conditions. During these campaigns, complementary physical and chemical measurements have been carried out, implying measurements of fluxes and concentrations of particles, BVOCs and oxidants. The results evidenced nocturnal new particle formation, which is an original result as this process was usually only reported during daytime. The strong contribution of BVOCs (dominated by α- and β-pinene) ozonolysis to nocturnal new particle formation has been demonstated. Particle flux measurements suggested that particles are transfered from the canopy to the higher atmospheric surface layer. The comparison between ozone fluxes and a physical ozone deposition model also highlighted an ozone production source. This ozone production might be related to BVOC photooxidation

Full textLakeshores zones are of very high ecological value. As they are ecotones between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, lake shoreline and littoral zones are characterized by a high level of biodiversity, including macroscopic aquatic plants known as macrophytes. Plant distribution, abundance and species composition are determined by physical features of lakeshores. This work aims to assess relationships between macrophyte populations and communities and hydromorphological components in shallow lakes at different scales. Plant and environmental variables were modeled or collected on the field in large lakes located along the western French Atlantic coast. Wind and wave action, slope, depth, sediment grain size and organic matter content are well known for their influence on macrophyte species distribution and assemblages. Physical variables can be used to predict the potential distribution of plant communities. Anthropogenic physical disturbances enhances the development of invasive species while they threaten rare and endangered native species. Plant management issues were also highlighted from a long-term field data (fourty years) analysis of macrophyte dynamics in these shallow lakes. Management strategies are needed for the conservation of native species, or even their restoration, and the control of alien species spread in these lakes. Similar in some ways to northern European lakes such as softwater lakes or Lobelia lakes, the ecological processes identified in these Atlantic shallow lakes could foreshadow the future situation for all lakes of the same type in the context of global change. Lakeshore ecosystems gather ecological, economic and societal issues, raising scientific questions and issues about their functioning and the bioindication of their ecological status that needs to be further explored

Full textMixed forests are less prone to insect damage than pure forests because ofreduced host accessibility and/or improved control by natural enemies. To test thesehypotheses, we have studied the ecology of the pine processionary moth (PPM)(Thaumetopoea pityocampa) and its parasitoid, in a monoculture of maritime pine(Pinus pinaster) plantations, the Landes de Gascogne forest. There, open areas(firebreaks, clear cuts) and patches of broadleaved woodlands (hedgerows, riparianforest, natural forest remnants) still persist locally. In this study we have shown that:(1) Pine stand colonization by PPM was limited by the presence ofbroadleaved hedgerows at stand edge. Broadleaved trees formed physical barriersdisrupting the visual detection of pine trees by PPM females when searching for anoviposition site.(2) The longevity of the two main PPM egg parasitoids increased whenspecimen were fed with honeydew produced by oak aphids. The generalist species, which emerges two months before PPM, could benefit from this longer lifespan tooverlap its host emergence.(3) PPM pupae survived better in the soil of open areas than under forestcovers (pine or broadleaved trees), because of higher temperature and humidity. Theassociation between pine stands and open areas benefits PPM through habitatcomplementation, whereas the presence of broadleaved trees may act as anecological trap for PPM caterpillars.(4) Maritime pine stands within heterogeneous landscapes exhibited lowerPPM infestations than similar stands within pine monocultures. PPM infestation levelsdecreased with increasing percent broadleaved area in the surrounding landscape. These results are discussed according to the ecological mechanisms whichmay explain the relationship between insect herbivory and tree species diversity.Perspectives for improved PPM management in the Landes de Gascogne forest, andfor further scientific research are proposed

Full textPublic policies stimulate the deployment of circular economy (EC). Among the application tools, industrial and territorial ecology aims is to improve productive systems by optimizing materials loops. However, studies have shown that elements organizations of a system influences the holistic capabilities of this system. The objective of this thesis is to exploring the influences of the network shapes of a companies set, on systemique durability of this set at local scale. The forest system of « Les Landes de Gascogne » is an appropriate industrial ecosystem to analyse innovative organization shapes and regional networking. Our experimental territorial unit is surrounded by forest and gives support to many companies, therefore we mapped the material wood flow, in order to build the collaborations structure between companies. Using comparative analysis we observed some network indicators related to robustness, flexibility and stability. The first contribution of this thesis is the extended created value network as a optimal framework to observe all activities involved in the value-creation of local resource. The second contribution is the proposition of the municipalities conurbation as adequate scales, to understand flux topology from local naturals ressources and the end-of-life goods. It is necessary to reproduce our study on other territories or on experimental data sets to improve our methods and results

Full textAt the global scale, forests are the largest emitters of VOCs. Once released into the atmosphere, VOCs will be fastly oxidized to oxygenated compounds. Depending on their volatility and reactivity, these oxidation products may themselves be re-oxidized, remain in the gas phase and/or be transferred to the particulate phase to form secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). This thesis aimed to better characterize biogenic VOC concentrations (BVOCs) and more especially their reactivity with atmospheric oxidants (i.e. the hydroxyl radical (OH), ozone (O3) and the nitrate radical (NO3)), in order to identify the main precursors of SOA formation within a maritime pine forest. The metrological development of a gas chromatographic analyzer has made possible the online and specified measurement of 20 BVOCs including isoprene, α- and β-pinene, 2 and Δ3-carene, α- and γ-terpinene, linalool, camphene, etc. This analyzer and some other instruments for the measurement of trace gases and aerosols were used during the summer of 2017 as part of the LANDEX intensive campaign in one of the largest pine forests in Europe (> 95% Pinus pinaster) located in the southwest of France. A principal component analysis of meteorological data and BVOC measurements showed that BVOC concentrations were mainly dependent on their emissions, the ambient temperature, the solar irradiation and the atmospheric stability. The analysis of the reactivity of the identified VOCs with the main atmospheric oxidants has helped to show the contrast between processes involving OH radical during daytime and ozonolysis at night. Finally, it was determined that the ozonolysis of β-caryophyllene, α-pinene, myrcene, and linalool, and the OH initiated oxidation of isoprene were the main sources of oxidation products, as SOA precursors, within the Landes forest
