Full textSince the end of 1980s, Sustainable Development (SD) has been made the object of much attention, driving the different actors of society to change their behaviors. Various institutional and private initiatives were introduced favoring the implementation of the concept. It was the case for example in Quebec, where the government introduced in 2004 a Plan de développement durable, followed by a the Sustainable Development Act in 2006. Various studies focused on the manner in which companies react to different pressures to widen their spheres of responsibility, but some key issues remain little studied in the literature. This is particularly the case for companies that display passive and negative behavior in the field of the integration of the integration of SD, and Small and Medium-Sized Entreprises (SMEs) in particular. SMEs offer a fertile ground for exploration because of their importance and economic weight, and their historically commitment to the environmental aspects of the SD. The objective of this qualitative study is to produce a portrait of the practices and the discourses of companies, in particular SMEs, in the field of the SD. More specifically, this research aims to analyze the stance of Quebec companies towards SD and of the public policies on this matter, as well as the perceptions of the SMEs which are less committed in this area and the justifications provided. To this end, a content analysis To this end, a content analysis of 69 submissions presented by the business community during the public consultation on the Plan de développement durable du Québec in 2005 was conducted, followed by a case study in nine manufacturing SMEs based on 33 interviews. The results allow to highlight the fact that enterprises adopt and justify passives positions to towards the implementation of SD are assumed and justified by the enterprises. In addition, the inactive behaviors in the field of SD seem just as legitimate as the increasing pressures and the prevailing views favoring the adoption of the SD. This calls into question the findings of recent studies, which adopt an optimistic view on the business engagement in SD, particularly among SMEs. Keywords: Sustainable development; SMEs; corporate responsibility.

Full textThe Canadian pulp and paper sector has played a major socio-economic role in the last two centuries. In addition to the advantage of their geographical position, P&P companies have accumulated proven experience in the forest industry, including the treatment of wood biomass. Over the last three decades, these entities have faced difficult environmental constraints, compounded by a chronic market crisis. This latest crisis has had unprecedented social consequences leading to a crisis of sustainability. Over the last decade, the green energy industry has become a basic component of the energy transition strategies for developed countries. Biomass has always been at the heart of such a strategy for Canada. For the P&P, this orientation is an opportunity to solve the growing environmental and economic crisis of the sector. Decision-makers need a road map to transform P&P's factories into an Integrated Forest Biorefinery (IFBR). The choice of technologies, the sizing of production capacity and the choice of bioenergy investment are major concerns for decision-makers. However, assessing the sustainability of this transformation remains a major challenge. Our contribution is focused on developing decision support approaches and tools to support an effective, robust and sustainable transformation of Canada's P&P industry. The objective is to assess the sustainability of the IFBR integration and to present a new business model to decision-makers, which can strengthen their ability to negotiate a favorable incentive policy for bioenergy investments within the framework of the public-private partnership. To achieve this goal, our methodology combines decision support tools, mathematical optimization models, along with financial and economic analysis. Our first contribution proposes the design and application of a sustainability evaluation method integrating the life cycle approach and the optimization of the value creation network as part of a multi-objective mathematical model. The proposed model provides a roadmap for sustainable bioenergy investments, minimizing GHG emissions and maximizing the financial value of the biorefinery over a long-term planning horizon while ensuring optimal management of the incubator activity. In the second contribution, we present a sensitivity analysis of the proposed mathematical model according to well selected scenarios, with the development of a framework for communicating the model to the decision-makers. The purpose of this analysis is to assess the robustness of the model, to communicate to stakeholders the implications of investment choices in bioenergy production in an uncertain environment, and to identify opportunities for improving the effectiveness of the proposed model. In the third contribution, we propose an in-depth tax analysis using accelerated depreciation methods applied to investments in bioenergy. This analysis deals with the impact of the types of depreciations on the choice of bioenergy investment and on sustainability. Our goal is to provide decision makers with a set of decision support tools while strengthening their power to negotiate a tax policy favorable to bioenergy investment. In this part, it was highlighted that the choice of the investment coupled with the choice of its depreciation way offers the investor a more complete visibility on the practical consequences of the investment in the bioenergetics field with respect to prevalent tax legislation. This reinforces the public-private partnership and determines the level of public interventionism needed for the success of the expected transformation of the P&P sector. The social impact analysis and stochastic programming approaches for the robust study were not addressed by this work, they were presented as research perspectives.

Full textThe individual-project unit is at the heart of a dynamic entrepreneurial system, which in continuous interaction with its environment. To ensure its survival and development, the entrepreneur is regularly called upon to unite around him a network of actors that can power the system energy and resources it lacks. This research will address this question: In a complex and dynamic entrepreneurial situation, how an entrepreneur builds and develops its network in order to acquire the resources necessary for success and development of its innovative new venture? To answer this question, we mobilized the Actor Network Theory (Callon and Latour, 1986) as a methodology that guides our research. According to this theory, a successful innovation is not linked solely to the genius of an individual, nor the intrinsic value of its project, but it is primarily the result of an effort by a specific combination of actors (human and nonhuman), which meets around the entrepreneur and his project. By adopting a longitudinal methodology, we have followed over a period of two years, the networking dynamics of six innovative new venture projects. We paid particular attention to the role of technical artifacts in this work

Full textOur thesis sheds light on the status of formal ethical statements in large france based companies. The following definition is given to an ethics document: a statement setting down corporate principles, ethics, rules of conduct, codes of practice or company philosophy. In order to collect data, we joined the 100 largest france based companies. We met corporate directors or senior human resource executives. A semi-directed interview was conducted where we requested a copy of ethics documents. We analysed the contents of these documents (fundamental dimensions, vocabulary, widety-covered topics). The main findings are as follows : large france based companies are becoming interested in formally thinking about ethics in business and drawing up ethics documents. Besides, striking differences towards corporate ethics documents point to the existence of two special approaches to institutionalize ethics. It reveals potentially divergent views among corporations as to the primary nature and purpose of a corporate ethics document: - cultural documents (in search of responsibility) providing statements about the company's aims, objectives, philosophy or values, which exclude specific guidance on employee behavior; - elaborate codes (requiring employees obedience) with detailed rules and guidelines, giving advice on behavior and conduct. This approach is an essentially anglo-saxon practice which has made its way to france via the subsidiaries of u. S. Firms. Ethics documents (ethical code, coporate credo or mission statement) utilize one of these two basic formats but they have one common point: they express corporate ethics in order to set up a homogenization process

Full textOrganizational effectiveness is a common but equivocal concept that suppose the determination of its criteria, its dimensions and its determinants. The interpretation of o. E's measures is based on the choice of a particular conception of organization's functionning. With regard to jarniou's theory, we admit that the organization is a socio-cultural, an economical and a political system. We result to the definition of three dimensions of the o. E's and we choose quality product and absenteeism as its indicators. We tried, then, to measure the cost of these indicators in the case of two tunisian organizations. We result to the fact that their socio-cultural context, to their chantheir structure to their socio-cultural context, to their changing culture characterized by the coexistence of tradition and modernity, and by an inappropriate strategy
