Abstract:

Invasive ivy (Hedera spp.) has extensive impacts on Pacific Northwest urban forests, many of which are not yet fully understood. In this study of Forest Park, Portland, Oregon, I evaluated several environmental variables obtained or derived from monitoring datasets at three spatial scales to determine the following: how ivy is spatially distributed; what factors are most correlated with ivy abundance; and how ivy abundance influences shrub community composition. This thesis explores the possibilities for ecocritical study in fiction through John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel The Grapes of Wrath. Major ecocritical interpretation has yet to gain much traction in novels; by focusing on human nature, this form’s “anthropocentric” posture seems itself to be antithetical to ecocritical efforts, which aim to unseat humans as the center of the moral universe. Up till now ecology and biodiversity of Sarcocystis species in game fauna in Lithuania has been investigated using traditional morphological methods. In the period of 2005-2011, muscle samples of 384 birds and 177 mammals were examined for Sarcocystis sarcocysts. Cysts of Sarcocystis spp. were investigated using light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and DNA analysis (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, ITS–1 region). Analyses of EPA long-term datasets (1985--1994) combined with field studies and ecosystem model development were used to investigate phytoplankton and nutrient dynamics in the York River estuary. Analysis of the EPA dataset showed that algal blooms occurred during winter-spring followed by smaller summer blooms.
