Abstract:
The research investigates the artistic experiences inserted in the urban everyday life in order to comprehend the dormant aesthetic perspectives in those practices concerning their interference in the processes of hegemonic subjectivation promoted by capitalistic societies. The analysis was made on practices of artistic performances that take the urban space and other anonymous aesthetic and relational productions that move away from usual propositions and keep attitudes based on the need of finding survival mechanisms and recognition inside the contemporary logic. The studies were supported by three urban intervention groups as the empirical main point of the research: the first is about the drifting in urban space having used a classic frame as starter device of the performance. The second point shows the urban performances of relational sense proposed by the group \"Garrafas Térmicas\", from São Paulo, and others similar, observing the variations and affinities. Lastly, we observed the artistic practices given as poetical registers rooted in \"common sense\" taken as experiences known and not thought. It\'s theoretical contextualization made itself through the understanding of contemporary art, aesthetic and art criticism, first by authors like Artur Danto, Anne Cauquelin, Hans Belting and Giorgio Argan. Next, the contact with the streets directed the research to authors who use the aesthetic to approach philosophical and anthropological questions and also the human sciences, like Jacques Rancière, Levi-Strauss, Henry Lefebvre, Frederic Jameson, Máximo Canevachi and Richard Schechner. This path was summarized with the choice of Michel de Certeau (2014), to approach the aesthetic production in urban environment aligned to the ideas of emerging deviationist tactics in daily life practices, also Stuart Hall (2013), who guided the reflection over the contemporary cultural field which involves the systems of ideology productions implicit in the making of relations and products engendered by generalist globalization of the capitalistic system. This study also had the objective of directing some attention over the game of market values and institutional agency trades that provoke the absorption of those experiences turning them into aesthetic objects. It\'s was also verified the relation of museums, other places and art institutes regarding that aesthetic production.

Galanis, Michael. "Corporate goverance in context : assessing the sustainability of managerial systems in the global ecomony with evidence from Germany's insider model." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2003. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/1832.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will assess the sustainability of managerial corporate governance systems in the context of the current economic globalisation wave. In order to do so corporate governance is studied as the function of decision-making undertaken by managers as corporate controllers, which is embedded in the national and supranational institutional context. The latter determine not only how much discretion managers have but also how they use it. Two main workable institutional equilibria are identified, reflecting two respective visions of the corporation that emerge from an overview of the most influential theories developed to study the nature of the firm. The first emphasises market transactions by promoting the externalisation of corporate functions and tends to align managerial decision-making to the interests of current shareholders, i. e. the maximisation of the firm's market value. The second contains a tendency towards the internalisation of corporate functions by the corporate organisation with enhanced managerial discretion being a crucial element for the sustainability of this sort of coordination. The crucial difference between these two institutional equilibria, i. e. the shareholder-oriented and the managerial, is that the former is less growth-oriented/dependent and emphasises the lack of commitment between stakeholders and "exit" from corporate relationships, whereas the latter is more growth-oriented/dependent and relies on stakeholder commitment and "voice". It is due to this difference that the managerial system is more susceptible to price competition which involves drastic cost-cuttings that affect stakeholder relationships and therefore more reliant on stable but relatively high macroeconomic growth rates and effective demand. A central hypothesis of this project is that this fundamental difference between the two systems is the decisive factor behind their ability to survive within the current context of economic globalisation. It is argued that globalisation, as a process where national institutional structures are gradually replaced by others determined by world market forces, not only promotes market based macro- and microeconomic coordination but has also (as a result) led to a global economic slowdown due to the inherent imperfections of the market mechanism. Simultaneously, the gradual removal of economic barriers has brought national corporate governance systems in competition with each other with increasing emphasis being placed on cost-reductions and short-term investments due to slower demand-growth. This has a negative impact on the workability of managerial systems and through a process of global isomorphism leads to the emergence of the shareholder-oriented system as the most likely winner not because it is better in terms of economic efficiency, but because it is more flexible. While these pressures are real, global corporate governance convergence is not guaranteed in the short and medium term due to different institutional dynamics that exist in each national system and which determine the scale and scope of adaptation. Empirical evidence from Germany confirms this since, although many basic institutions supporting German managerialism are being eroded, some path dependent ones remain stable and thus prevent the complete institutionalisation of shareholder supremacy. However, this creates systemic workability problems that can in the long term undermine even those institutional structures that are highly path dependent. The progress of further adaptation in the future depends on whether the costs of unworkability exceed adaptation costs.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the mediation of ecological values, showing that we come to understand, interact, and value the ecologies in which we are bound, through experience of commodified and technologised abstractions of ecological life. So doing, I take the study of ecological value out of the natural and into the cultural, because it is within the sphere of culture that such ecological values are propagated and valiorised. And it is those values that determine how we act on, in, and through our environments, and ultimately come to engage as active ecological agents.

This report aims to give a detailed description of a project done in collaboration with DETAB ECOMAT Automation AB and concerns the design of one of its machine models. The goal is to find an applicable solution to automate a process that is currently performed manually. Over three months, work has been carried out gradually with preliminary study, concept generation and evaluation of potential solutions. The report describes the development process in design and product development focusing on safety as well as “Design for Assembly”, which aims to use only the necessary components for the intended function. For this reason the components are initially divided into the categories “components for motion” and “power transmission”. This in turn leads to different solution proposals and an optimal solution is found after screening. Finally, a component selection has been made with the help of their component supplier, Festo AB. The final solution proposal consists of a pre-and-post image of the design proposal, written description of the function and component drawing for the parts that need to be custom-made. After the end of this project, the suggested solution will be tested and evaluated before it potentially becomes a permanent part of the design.

McNeely, Mitchell P. "A Comparison of Fixed- and Variable-Ratio Token Exchange-Production Schedules with Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1404526/.

Full text
Abstract:
The token economy is a widely used and versatile motivational system within applied behavior analysis. Moreover, token reinforcement procedures have been shown to be highly effective in the treatment of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In the experimental analysis of behavior, token reinforcement contingencies are conceptualized as three interconnected schedule components: (1) the token-production schedule, (2) the exchange-production schedule, and (3) the token-exchange schedule. Basic work with nonhuman subjects has demonstrated that the exchange-production schedule is the primary driver of performance in these arrangements, and that variable-ratio exchange-production results in reduced pre-ratio pausing and greater overall rates of responding relative to fixed-ratio exchange-production schedules. However, little applied research has been conducted to assess the generality of these findings within applied settings. The purpose of this study was to determine if fixed- and variable-ratio token exchange-production schedules would exert differential effects on pre-ratio pausing and overall rates of responding for three children with ASD during a free-operant sorting task. The results showed that pre-ratio pausing and overall rates of responding were not differentially effected by the fixed- and variable-ratio exchange-production schedules. Discrepancies between the experimental work and the current study are discussed along with additional limitations.

Domson-Lindsay, Albert. "Towards a broader application of decision-making paradigms: a case study of the establishment of ECOWAS Cease-fire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG)." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002981.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis in the main, looks at the decision-making process which underlined the Economic Community of West African States' attempt to end the Liberian crisis. It examines the establishment of ECOMOG to intervene in the Liberian civil crisis and the various pacific attempts to resolve the Liberian question. It does so through the medium of decision - making theory and some of the conceptual models that have flowed out of it. The thesis' focus on the decisional process of a regional body marks an attempt to broaden the scope of application of decision - making paradigms, which are usually employed to analyse decisions of national governments. The imperative for analysing the decisional process of ECOWAS in its quest to find solution to the Liberian problem has in part been dictated by the novelty of the ECOMOG concept. It marks the first major attempt of a sub - regional economic organization to successfully find solution to a civil conflict, as a result, there are numerous lessons to be gleaned from its failures and successes. Its relevance in the African context, with its intractable conflicts cannot be overemphasized. It has also been motivated by the fact that more works need to be produced on the decision-making processes of governments and regional bodies within the continent. The thesis argues that, both rational and "irrational" elements infused the decisional process of ECOW AS in its bid to solve the Liberian Crisis. Among other things, Policy-makers were influenced in their choice of decision by rational calculations based on national interest. It examines the clash of interests which characterized the establishment ofECOMOG as an tntervention force, the impasse this fostered and how it was eventually resolved. It postulates that exteljIlal actors influenced the decision process and that policy :Qiakers were aided to make the decisions they made by other organs in the decisional chain. The "irrational" component of the process, among other things, could be seen from the fact that the Liberian question was solved in " bits and pieces". Besides, blunders were committed through defective decision - making mechanism. The thesis concludes by offering suggestions to improve the quality of ECOW AS decision-making process with regard to conflict resolution and how to achieve regional consensus.

Abstract:
"Ideally, peacekeeping operations demonstrate the concern of the international community in situations of instability or conflict arising between or within states. They are conceived to bring about peace and 'ensure the effective promotion and protection of [human] rights'. As a result, peacekeeping operations as well as peacekeepers are expected to comply with standards of human rights and humanitarian law. With respect to the Economic Community of West African States Cease-Fire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), its intervention in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, and Côte d'Ivoire have been generally welcomed as a response to barbaric and devastating wars in West Africa. However, the observation of ECOMOG missions reveals several instances of violations of human rights and humanitarian law committed by ECOMOG peacekeepers. These violations include attacks against civilians, summary executions, rapes, torture, looting, etc. In other words, the saviours have turned into violators of rights. While these violations have provoked concern and indignation, few measures have been taken to address the problem, hold peacekeepers accountable and prevent abuses in the future. ... This study is divided into five chapters. Chapter one provides, among other, the background of the study, the statement of the research problem and the significance of the study. Chapter two gives an insight into the creation, structure, mechanisms and evolution of ECOMOG as the peacekeeping organ of ECOWAS. Chapter three examines the basis for the applicability of human rights and international humanitarian law to peacekeepers and shows the violations committed by the ECOMOG peacekeepers since 1990. Chapter four analyses the responses to abuses committed by ECOMOG peacekeepers. It discusses the national, regional and universal responses to these abuses. It investigates both prevention and accountability mechanisms existing to address abuses committed by ECOMOG peacekeepers. It also explores some potential accountability and prevention mechanisms. Finally, chapter five makes some concluding remarks and suggests specific recommendations for the improvement of the existing responses." -- Introduction.<br>Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)) -- University of Pretoria, 2004.<br>http://www.chr.up.ac.za/academic_pro/llm1/dissertations.html<br>Centre for Human Rights<br>LLM

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the role of regional organizations in peacemaking and peacekeeping, particularly on the effects of peace agreement duration. This is important because the United Nations has been traditionally seen as the default international peacekeeping force but recently, more responsibility is being given to regional organizations. This study hypothesizes that regional organizations' ability to clear commitment problems, create specific agreements, and willingness to enforce agreements make them the most effective third parties to deal with many conflicts. However, the study also hypothesizes that regional organizations are less fit to mediate conflicts based around ethnicity, identity, or religious disparities. By utilizing a mixture of logistic regression and case studies, the results illustrate that regional organizations are an essential asset to creating agreements that elongate the duration of peace. In testing for the partiality of regional organizations, the specifics of agreements made, the willingness and capabilities of enforcement, the reason for the conflict and the institutionalization of the organization, quantitative and qualitative results illustrate that regional organizations are a valid tool for conflict management.<br>M.A.<br>Masters<br>Political Science<br>Sciences<br>Political Science; International Studies

Smit, Ruan. "Retrospective analysis of the prescribing patterns of calcium channel blockers in a section of the private health care sector of South Africa / Ruan Smit." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4934.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Calcium channel blockers are mainly divided into antihypertensive and antianginal treatment agents. In 2000 it was estimated that 972 million adults worldwide were living with hypertension and it is expected to affect 1.56 billion patients by 2025. The incremental expenditure for the antihypertensive therapeutic group in the United States of America was estimated at $US 55 billion per annum in 2006. It was stated that around seven million people in the United States of America suffered from angina, with around 400 000 new reports every year. Objective: To determine the prescribing patterns of calcium channel blocker medicine items during 2005 to 2008 in a section of the private health care sector of South Africa. Methods: A retrospective quantitative drug utilisation review was done using a medicine claims database ranging over four years from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2008. The total medicine claims database was divided into cardiovascular medicine items and then into calcium channel blockers. These were analysed according to age as well as gender. Further analysis included adherence of calcium channel blockers as well as an analysis of prescribers of these items during the study period. Results: The total number of patients on the medicine claims database consisted of 1 509 621 patients in 2005. This number decreased to 974 497 patients in 2008. The most medicine items were dispensed in 2006 (n = 21 113 422) with an average cost of R 92.82 (SD = 196.42) per medicine item. It was noted that 16.05% (n = 242 264) of patients used at least one cardiovascular item in 2005. The percentage of cardiovascular medicine item users increased by 4.36% during the study period to 20.41% (n = 198 847) in 2008. In 2008 the cardiovascular medicine items dispensed were responsible for 19.18% (R 342 565 308.41) of the total cost of all medicine items claimed. In 2005 the results revealed that 1.63% (n = 318 258) of all medicine items dispensed were calcium channel blocker medicine items. The percentage of calcium channel blockers increased to 2.24% (n = 367 437) of the total number of medicine items in 2008. The cost prevalence index was calculated for the calcium channel blockers and the value declined from 1.5 in 2005 to 1.22 in 2008, which indicated that the items dispensed were relatively expensive, but less than in 2005. An increase of 16.17% in the usage of generic medicine items were noted from 2005 to 2008. More female patients than male patients claimed medicine items during the study period. A higher percentage of male patients used a cardiovascular medicine item as well as calcium channel blockers during the study period compared to females and a larger percentage of their medicine expenditure was used on cardiovascular medicine items as well as calcium channel blockers compared to females. The usage of cardiovascular medicine items as well as calcium channel blocker medicine items increased with patient age. In 2008, 17.98% of patients older than 65 years of age used a calcium channel blocker compared to 0.97% of patients aged > 25 <= 35 years. Only 60.34% of calcium channel blockers items were used with acceptable refill adherence rates during the study. More than a third of the calcium channel blockers medicine items used had unacceptable low adherence rates from 2005 to 2008. In each of the study years the highest potential saving with generic substitution was seen with amlodipine containing items. It was also observed that some generic substitutions could be relatively more expensive than the innovator products and an increased cost instead of a saving through generic substitution may have occurred. Conclusion: This study highlighted the prescribing patterns and cost implications of calcium channel blockers in the private health care sector of South Africa. It is recommended that a more in–depth study of the adherence of calcium channel blockers be done. This study should also include the cost strategies of generic substitution of calcium channel blockers in South Africa.<br>Thesis (M.Pharm (Pharmacy Practice))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立清華大學<br>資訊工程學系<br>103<br>The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has given rise to a new class of embedded systems that combine short-range, low-power wireless communication with proximity sensing, inertial sensing, and real-time clock (RTC) in a miniature package. Such a system can be very useful in collecting contextual information for its user, including user behavior or gesture, user location, orientation, and motion, user encounter with other users or objects, and time. Such context can be crucial in making pervasive electronic systems behave in a truly intelligent way. Unfortunately, there have been few platforms to date that can provide all the necessary features. In this thesis, we present EcoMini, a new wireless motion-sensing node with RTC and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) radio transceiver, all in a miniature size of 12 mm × 9 mm. It uses the same programmable microcontroller unit (MCU) for both the BLE protocol stack and application code. BLE enables direct connectivity to smartmobiles and PC/Mac computers without the inconvenience of a dongle or gateway. The 9 degree-of-freedom (9-DoF) inertial sensor includes a digital triaxial accelerometer, a gyroscope, and a compass in one package. Its threshold detection feature enables effective motion-based power management. The contributions include a balance between power, size, and expandability. This system has been used for easy, efficient implementation of several IoT devices, including a motion-enabled proximity tag, an air-mouse, smart slippers, and person- identifying cabinet doors.

Abstract:
The essence of this thesis is to explore the role of Nigeria, West Africa's hegemon, in the intervention efforts by the Economic Community of West African states (ECOWAS) through its Cease-fire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in both Liberia (1990-1997) and Sierra Leone (1993-2000). While the thesis has sought to understand the leading role played by Nigeria in first establishing the ECOWAS and being the primus motor for its functions, I have also attempted to analyse the rationalities for the transformation of ECOWAS from a purely economic integrative scheme to a security organisation. While the economic agendas for ECOWAS have not changed, the argument in this thesis is that security related issues and realities have taken precedence over the original economistic agendas. One of the thesis' major arguments is that the nature of results attained in both Liberia and Sierra Leone are different because of (a) the leadership role of Nigeria and (b) the nature of international responses and contributions to the resolution of these conflicts. In the thesis, I argue that in the Liberian case, Nigeria took a more domineering leadership role albeit tinged with the characteristics of the actions of a benevolent hegemon. Here, Nigeria through different processes either through leadership, consensus-seeking processes and dialogue managed to get other ECOWAS states to coalesce around its leadership. However, in Sierra Leone, Nigeria's leadership role was not permitted to unfold. The resultant effect was the shift from NIFAG to ECOMOG and eventually "rekindling hatred" of these troops as UN troops. This thesis has pointed to the utility of sub-regional organisations in resolving conflicts and demonstrates the need for further study.<br>Political Science<br>DLITT ET PHIL (INT POL)

Abstract:
The study utilizes regional integration theories like neo-functionalism, intergovernmentalism and new regionalism to analyse the formation, structure and transformation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). It examines the role of ECOWAS as a sub-regional economic body and its transformation to a political and security body dealing with sub-regional conflict resolution. Though neo-functionalism is generally analysed in reference to European regional integration, the study attempts to draw some lessons from this theory. Also, new regionalism theory is utilized to examine the transformation of ECOWAS from a mere economic body to a security and political entity. Regionalism in West Africa was initially geared towards mere economic cooperation; however, the emergence of ECOWAS on the scene and its subsequent transformation witnessed several changes towards the path of security cooperation. Despite its involvement with the gigantic political and security related activities, a general evaluation of economic integration in West Africa depicts a low level of progress. The poor state of sub-regional economic integration shows that ECOWAS did not complete its regional economic integration agenda before diverting to other sectors of integration. ECOWAS peacekeeping operations have been the dominant topic in sub-regional conflict resolution in West Africa. However, other forms of conflict resolution, including mediation, negotiation, conciliation and arbitration have been severally utilized. Also, in some of the cases, peacekeeping operations have been deployed only after other peaceful efforts have failed. ECOWAS peacekeeping operations are divergent operations with different forms and mandates. Therefore, they are better analysed under the framework of peacekeeping, peace-enforcement and peace-making theories. ECOWAS peacekeeping operations have been a subject of debate by proponents of the principle of non-interference and those of the responsibility to protect. The expediency of military intervention for humanitarian reasons as well as the prevention of genocide, war crimes and catastrophic loss of lives has questioned the principle of non-interference and validated the principle of responsibility to protect.<br>Political Sciences<br>D.
