The use of electricity in 21st century living has been firmly established throughout most of the world, correspondingly the infrastructure for production and delivery of electricity to consumers has matured and stabilised. However, due to recent technical and environmental–political developments, the electricity infrastructure worldwide is undergoing major restructuring. The forces driving this reorganisation are a complex interplay of technical, environmental, economic and political factors. The general trend of the reorganisation is a dis–aggregation of the previously integrated functions of

The economic boom in South Africa following the 1994 democratisation led to increased welfare of the citizens and their purchasing power. This further resulted in increase in electricity consumption. The electricity supply did not increase proportionally to the increase in electricity consumption leading to the 2008 shortage of electricity which nearly damaged the power generating circuit. The literature review has shown that electricity supply and consumption have a positive impact on economic growth. It further showed that employment enhances economic growth. Abstract:
The last decade has delivered rapid structural change to the Australian electricity sector. The common conceptualisation of the sector's restructuring has been narrowly based around sector-specific regulatory change and the creation of a national electricity market. This thesis argues that such a focus provides an incomplete and inaccurate explanation of the transformation. Three closely interrelated layers of policies and actions embodying the precepts of neoliberalism, and implemented by the state, have driven the sector's transformation. These policies and actions transcend 'electricity-cen

Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of economic reform on the technical and allocative efficiency of Chinese state enterprises, using survey data for 1980 and for 1984-88. Market-oriented economic reform of state enterprises began in the late 1970s and continued throughout the 1980s. The thesis focuses on two important aspects of reform: the process by which the central planning system was replaced with an open market system; and changes in institutions governing the financial relationship of enterprises and government, the financing of capital and the management of labour. Both aspects were

This thesis makes contributions to provide the microeconomic evidence on the effects of electricity provision and on the feasibility of electricity provision via renewable energy in developing countries. Three selected topics are presented. First, we discuss how the impact of national electricity grid provision affects household welfare and individual labor activities in Vietnam. To overcome the endogeneity problem of infrastructure provision, the slope of the terrain is used as the instrumental variable. We present both first-difference regression and pooled regression results using hou

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three main essays on applied econometrics, using time series and cross-sectional data. The first essay focuses on the issue of testing for Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). Given that the presence of transaction costs in trading implies a nonlinear adjustment process of real exchange rates towards PPP, the traditional tests for PPP using a linear framework may be inappropriate. The first essay models the dynamics of the adjustment towards PPP using a nonlinear exponential smooth transition autoregressive (ESTAR) process and tests for the validity of PPP in a nonlinear fram

Abstract:
This dissertation describes methods developed for analysis of the New York City energy system. The analysis specifically aims to consider the built environment and its' impacts on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Several contributions to the urban energy systems literature were made. First, estimates of annual energy intensities of the New York building stock were derived using a statistical analysis that leveraged energy consumption and tax assessor data collected by the Office of the Mayor. These estimates provided the basis for an assessment of the spatial distribution of building energy con
