Abstract:
Many migrations are temporary—a fact that has often been ignored in the economic literature on migration. Such omission may be serious in that expected migration temporariness can impart a distinct dynamic element to immigrants' economic behavior, generating possible consequences for nonmigrants in both home and host countries. In this paper, we provide a thorough examination of the various aspects of temporary migrations that matter for the analysis of economic phenomena. We demonstrate the extent of temporary migrations in population movements. We show how temporariness can affect the various economic choices and how better data have improved both the measurement of nonpermanent migrations and the analyses of various aspects of migrant behavior. We propose a general theoretical framework for modeling temporary migration decisions, based on which we outline the various motives for temporariness while simultaneously reviewing related literature and available data sources. We discuss the possible consequences of migration temporariness for nonmigrants in both home and host countries. (JEL F22, F24, J11, J61, K37, O15)

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of individual publications of the second decade of the 21st century on topical issues of the new economic policy. The presented historiographic review is based on the works of historians, lawyers, economists interested in the new economic policy. The points of view of researchers have been compared according to some interrelated components of NEP. The study has revealed an increased interest of Russian scientists in the content and consequences of NEP. At the same time, the published works on the historiography of NEP are not exhaustive. The article contains the author's conclusions, summarizing the results of the researches made by modern home-grown scientists on the most studied aspects of NEP. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that the historiography of recent years objectively characterizes NEP as a phenomenon of Soviet history. In the modern sense, the new economic policy has not received the full support from the Bolsheviks, but determined the development of civil legislation.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to determine the perceptions of permanent residents on the impact of foreign second home owners on the socio?cultural and economic life of the city, and the residents? level of satisfaction in terms of living with them. As part of the research, a questionnaire study was carried out with 453 residents who reside in areas where there is a predominance of second home owners. The Second Home Tourism Impact Scale (SHTIS) was developed to measure the impacts of second home owners. In the results of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), four main factors were identified to be associated with residents? perceptions of the sociocultural and economic impacts of second home owners. These factors included socio?cultural benefit, sociocultural cost, economic benefit, and economic cost. These factors were then affirmed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). According to the main findings of the study, the residents believe that while foreign owners increase the economic costs, they also generate major economic benefits to their lives. In terms of socio?cultural aspects, they stated that second homes owners caused more positive effects compared to the negative ones. Moreover, it was identified that although the residents are not dissatisfied with the foreign owners, they do not support the foreign owners to have more estates and be entitled to easier conditions to buy them.

Abstract:
Injuries are one of the leading causes of death in the world. In Malaysia, injuries form one of the three main causes of mortality. They are also an important cause of permanent and temporary disability and work absenteeism in the productive age group. Increasing affluence and industrialization coupled with growing population and transportation needs in rapidly developing countries like Malaysia have resulted in a surge of road and occupational injuries. Three quarters of fatalities due to road, occupational, drowning and home injuries occur in those below 45 years of age. A majority of injuries in these categories are attributed to “human” factors and therefore can be prevented by public education and enforced training of workers. The total annual economic loss due to all types of injuries is estimated to be 2 billion Malaysian Ringgit (US$1 = MR2.76 approximately). The government is currently in the process of setting up full-time departments for road safety and occupational health and safety.

Abstract:
The time appears due for a reappraisal of the economic argument in the imperialism debate. For decades the standard procedure has been first to refute Hobson and Lenin on empirical grounds and then to present a non-economic explanation for the European overseas expansion during the era of modern imperialism (1870–1914). Presently a new paradigm is gaining acceptance. It is an approach which puts the emphasis solidly back on the economic side but without its Marxist connotations. Cain and Hopkins took the lead with their theory of ‘gentlemanly capitalism’; they link the landed South and City finance with Imperial policy thus explaining overseas expansion by referring to macroeconomic changes at home. Davis and Huttenback associate the profitability of Empire investments with their ‘two-England hypothesis’ for British business: London investors stood apart, profited more and exerted a greater influence. It is my intention to show that a similar type of non-Marxist economic argument applies also to the case of Dutch expansion in the Indonesian archipelago at the time of modern imperialism.

Abstract:
The study was designed to determine the relevance of basic electricity to home economics students in technical colleges in Edo state, Nigeria. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, three research questions were raised while one hypothesis was formulated. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population and sample of the study consists of one hundred and forty (140) NTC II and III Home Economics students in four technical colleges in Edo State. A four point rating scale questionnaire titled Relevance of Basic Electricity to Home Economics Students Questionnaire (RBEHSQ)was the instrument used to collect data from the respondents. The face and content validity of the instrument was ascertained by two lecturers in department of vocational and technical education, and one Lecturer in department of measurement and evaluation, faculty of education, University of Benin, Benin city, Nigeria. The split half technique was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The two sets of scores obtained were correlated using Pearson Product Moment Corrolation Coefficient (PPMCC) and the process yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.71 which means that the instrument was reliable. Mean ( ) and standard deviation (SD) were used to answer research questions 2 and 3 while research question 1 was answered with simple percentage. The hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance with chi-square. Findings revealed that Home economics students are much aware of the relevance of basic electricity to home economics, students are moderately familiar with the basic electricity aspect of home economics programme and that the extent to which students are acquainted with basic electricity skills relevant to home economics is low. Tested hypothesis revealed that there is no significant difference between the perception of male and female students of the relevance of basic electricity to home economics. Based on the findings, it was recommended that efforts should be made by home economic lecturers to relate basic electricity to home economics so as to enable students become aware of the relationship between subjects, educational planners and school management should make adequate provision for necessary facilities for the teaching of basic electricity. School management should also ensure that only qualified lecturers are employed to teach home economics and that lecturers on their part should handle the basic electricity with all seriousness in such a way that would increase students’ interest and acquire skills in basic electricity.

Abstract:
Social and labour relations on today’s home labour market are accompanied by adverse social and economic phenomena, such as poverty of working population, inequality in profit distribution, discrimination in remuneration, shadow forms of employment and pay, illegal and interregional migration, labour exploitation, staff deficit and excess, which results in imperfect nature of competition on home labour market. These adverse phenomena are caused, on the one hand, by imperfect indications of competitive behavior of labour market entities, which shows the imperfect type of social and labour relations where parties’ interests are deprived of mutually beneficial basis of their satisfaction and, on the other hand, by imperfect competitive conditions of labour market entities’ functioning, which is manifested in requirements to labour quality. The article studies the key aspects of imperfect competition on home labour market and shows dynamics of its principles statistics. By analyzing and summarizing the dynamics of competitive situations investigated in the regional aspect the authors gained a conceptual model of imperfect competition taking into account its behavioral and institutional aspects. The key social and economic aspects of imperfect competition impact on labour reproduction were researched. On the basis of the provided conclusions the authors put forward certain measures of state regulation of imperfect competition, which could increase workers’ competitiveness and therefore improve the quality of labour reproduction.

Abstract:
The world, without exception, our country, is being hit by the Covid-19 outbreak, which until now is not clear when it will end. This epidemic is not only threatening public health, but also collapses all aspects of the world economy. From the scale of the country, corporations, SMEs, to individuals, are affected by this outbreak. Not surprisingly, all circles are struggling to find a way to survive these two great threats; the covid-19 outbreak and the economic crisis. For the Muslim community, the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon him is a role model in all aspects of life, because his teachings have presented everything that mankind needs, both in matters of the hereafter and in the world. Through qualitative research, the researcher tried to reveal the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah be upon himin facing and resolving the threat of economic crisis. By collecting the data from the Qur’an, hadith, and scholars' statements, the researcher tries to get a clear picture of these guidance.Hopefully, these guidance can be applied by the Muslim community in facing the threat of the economic crisis that is currently haunting the international community. From this research, it was revealed that the main cause of the economic crisis was human behavior that deviated from the guidance of Sharia. Therefore, faith in Allah the Exalted, the Lord of the universe, is a solid foundation as well as a source of inspiration for Muslims in facing all the dynamics of life, including the threat of economic crises. Abstract:
This paper focuses on the influence of socio-economic risk factors and different aspects of the home learning environment in early childhood on children’s language competencies (vocabulary and grammar skills). The assumption is that children with more risk factors have lower competencies, but the home learning environment (measured by everyday activities at home and cultural activities) acts as a protective factor against risk. The data ( n = 2406 children) are a sample of the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), which collects longitudinal data on a sample of four-year-old children starting in preschool. The regression models show higher levels of vocabulary and grammar skills for children with fewer socio-economic risk factors. This influence persists even after adding both indicators of the home learning environment. However, there is an additional small effect of the home learning environment on children’s language competencies. Practical and policy implications of the study are discussed, especially against the background of the reduction of social disparities in Germany.

Abstract:
Background. The aim of this study was to present the medical, epidemiological and economic aspects of traumatic injuries in children and adolescents. The literature on the subject is scarce. Material and methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the data of 1,138 children treated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Stefan Żeromski Specialized Hospital in Kraków between 2012 and 2016 on account of head, abdominal and pelvic, chest, testicular and musculoskeletal injuries. Age, sex, circumstances and type of the injury as well as concomitant damage were analyzed. Results. Musculoskeletal injuries accounted for 68% of all the injuries analysed. The mean age of the patients was 6.3 years. The main causes of injury were same-level fall (30%), fall from a height (22.5%), road accidents (8%), and sports injuries (19%). 36% and 29% of the patients sustained injuries at home and at or near school, respectively. Conclusions: 1. Traumatic injuries in children and adolescents are the most common cause of admissions to pediatric surgery departments, with musculoskeletal injuries being the most frequent among them. 2. Injuries occur most frequently at or near home or school. 3. The cost of treatment and hospital stay of patients with musculoskeletal injuries accounted for 50% of the total cost of treatment in the Department of Pediatric Surgery. 4. There is a need to develop and implement preventive and educational programs for parents, guardians, teachers and children to prevent injuries.

Abstract:
Traditional environments consist not only of physical buildings and spaces but also the people and their activities which take place within them. This paper examines some aspects of the interrelationship between people and places. Traditional social values are believed to be undermined by the harsh imperatives of survival in the expanding urban areas of the developing world. The collaborative nature of many rural societies can be contrasted with the hard, individualistic and competitive character of life in developing cities. Unregulated, urban, economic processes in particular are assumed to be antagonistic towards gemeinschaft ideals because the logic of the market has little respect for non-monetary values. However one of the key characteristics of many informal economies is the ability of participants to draw creatively and flexibly on all potential resources: human, material and spatial. This is particularly evident in households and settlements where a significant proportion of the economic activity is within micro scale, home-based enterprises (HBEs). By blurring and re-configuring the spatial and conceptual boundaries between work and home, between production and reproduction, many households are able to generate income to sustain themselves. Intrinsic to these processes are the linkages and exchanges between neighbours and residents, many of which are based on cultural and religious value systems which can be supportive of the economic activities taking place. This paper will explore aspects of the interrelationship between economic and social processes through the use of empirical data collected during periods of participant observation in a consolidated informal urban settlement (kampung) in the city of Surabaya, Indonesia. Detailed household case studies will be used to illustrate how income generation activities are embedded within social networks and how in many cases traditional collaborative cultural values directly reinforce economic production. This is echoed in the use of space, particularly the overlapping and shared use of streets and alleyways. The paper concludes that despite severe economic constraints many traditional values facilitate survival in times of crisis and can be conducive to longer term sustainability.

At the moment of its founding in 1911, Connecticut College for Women exhibited a curricular tension between an emphasis on the liberal arts, which mirrored the elite men's and women's colleges of the day, and vocational aspects, which made it a different type of women's college, one designed to prepare women for the kind of lives they would lead in twentieth-century America. Connecticut was a women's college that simultaneously embraced the established brand of education practiced by its prestigious Seven Sister neighbors and forged its own path by integrating elements of home economics, municipal housekeeping, and professional/clerical training into its academic program. For forty years Connecticut College for Women achieved a balance between those two opposing poles of its curriculum.

Abstract:
Lord Kames (Henry Home) (1696–1782) was a well-known jurist, philosopher and judge in the Scottish Enlightenment, whose writings on aesthetics and literary criticism, especially, were very significant in the eighteenth century and later, not only in Britain and the United States, but also in France and Germany. His works on law and legal history were important mainly during his lifetime, but at least one aspect of his legal writings deserves special attention today: his concept of property, which he never stated as one comprehensive theory. Nevertheless, it pervades most of his work. This article seeks to extract and piece together, from a number of his legal and non-legal works, the elements of this quite original property theory which comprises legal-doctrinal, philosophical-theoretical, historical, sociological and psychological, aesthetic-moral and economic aspects. Together these elements can be restated as a surprisingly coherent property system, which may enrich discussions in modern property theory.

Abstract This article explores the relationship between economic and social aspects of differential inclusion in South Africa as well as migrants’ notions and practices of home and belonging. It is based on narratives provided by Zimbabweans in Johannesburg, and considers what this relationship might imply for how we understand circular migration. It finds that, differential inclusion – emanating from migrants’ experiences of deportability, insecure residence, marginal economic practices, uncertain futurity and temporal disruptions, that punctuated their post-arrival everyday life – shapes migrants’ perceptions of home as a concrete site left behind to which migrants strive to return. Conversely, negative evaluations of livelihood opportunities in Zimbabwe fuel an orientation towards an imminent yet continually deferred eventual return.

Abstract:
Abstract Demographic factors next to economic, political and legal ones, are important elements determining the development of the housing market. The analysis of the age structure of the population and of the dynamics of change shows that the population of baby boomers in the age group that is actively entering the labor market and becoming independent is a stimulant for the development of the housing market. Individuals who are gaining economic independence generate new needs and, with appropriate financial resources, also future demand for their own accommodation. Deliberations regarding the housing market benefit noticeably from the analysis of home buyers’ age structure, especially in the context of the family life cycle. This issue became the focus of our study, which aims to determine the age of apartment buyers on the local market during an economic downturn and state interventionism in the form of preferential mortgages. The analysis makes use of information from notarial acts (including the personal identity number PESEL - the year of birth of the purchaser) and statistical tools. The results of the study may support the decisions and direction of state aid aimed at meeting housing needs.

Abstract:
This article explores the relationship between the domestic position of Jewish bourgeois housewives and the larger Swedish, urban landscape at the beginning of the twentieth century. Examining the interior décor, shopping patterns, urban places, and the social, cultural and religious aspects of the domestic spheres of Irene Strauss and Jeannette Ettlinger, this article argues that they consciously used public spaces to establish their individual practices of Jewishness. By entering the gendered space of the Jewish home, accessible through private letters and receipts, this article portrays the bourgeois women as actors with social and economic power. They produced public spaces that communicated either cultural integration or orthodox distinctiveness, thereby constructing diverse strategies for Swedish belonging. These strategies demonstrate the growing religious, social and cultural diversity within the Jewish community in Stockholm during the three last decades before the Second World War.

Abstract:
About one billion people around the world move abroad or outside their birthplace seeking better earning possibilities. Economic migration has been accepted by many families as a strategy aiming improvement of their functioning. In a long-term prospect it affects the family’s well-being among others through investing in education and health. The mobility of one or several family members colours the leaving and those who remain at home both in positive and negative way depending individual conditions. Although postal orders are potentially an important way to mitigate the limits of the family budget, the weakest family members who need attention, repeatedly bear high cost of migration decisions. The individualistic effect of the economic migration of the Poles for functioning of their families is migrational orpanhood of the children and older people which is the main theme of intellectualizing in the present article. Special attention should be drawn to people in grand old age whose proportion in our country is still rising. In the context of relevant issues, it is necessary to take steps aiming to mitigate the costs of migration born by families, offering support recouping the losses coming from the mobility.

Abstract:
During the last decades, against the backdrop of radical social and economic restructuring, the rural environment has changed fundamentally, arising new social and economic dynamics and cultural realities. The second homes development has significantly contributed to this process and created major challenges for the need to protect the rural character. Therefore, with the purpose of integrated and sustainable spatial planning, a detailed acquaintance of second homes’ spatial differentiation as part of contemporary rural landscapes, is a core prerequisite. This study aims to determine the second homes spatial patterns in relation to the main characteristics of the local environment, and to create a practical cornerstone for stakeholders concerned with integrated planning of second home tourism. In order to achieve these goals, this research used five major datasets related to land cover, elevation, climate, management system for protected areas and other social aspects (e.g. tourism, native settlements). Twenty-three variables were defined using GIS and subsequently assigned to grid cells with a size of 1.5 km2. To reduce the dimensionality of spatial datasets, Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was performed, resulting seven components that explained 77.2% of the variation. The PCA score was the subject of k-means cluster analysis that revealed nineteen landscape types. Finally, the spatial location of second homes is overlaid with the identified rural landscapes. This approach shows plenty of hidden nuances of second home tourism and facilitates its integration in both spatial, socio-cultural, and administrative dimensions.

The learning program through the TVRI program can make it easier for students who have obstacles to access the internet, due to economic reasons and geographic location. This study aims to examine the effect of learning from home through TVRI on the psychomotor aspects of elementary school students during the spread of Covid-19. There are 3 levels studied, namely readiness, guidance, and basic skills. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The research subjects included students in grades III, IV, and V SDN Jambean 02. The data filling technique was an instrument in the form of observation and structured interviews. Learning from home through the TVRI learning program guided by parents or adults, affects the psychomotor aspects of students at the readiness and guidance stages, but at the basic skilled stage it has not been successful. This shows the role of teachers in schools cannot be saved by technology, even when students study at home accompanied by parents. With the learning from home through the TVRI program, it is hoped that parents can read students when studying, with the aim of developing students' psychomotor aspects optimally

Our results reveal the EMM based setting is superior to the conventional housing loans in at least two aspects. These are the prevention of house price inflation in all phases of economic business cycle and the smoothening of real estate cycles. This means that, under the EMM, the risk of real estate bubble formation is subdued, which should prove to be welfare improving.

The Encyclical Letter “Laudato Sì. On Care For Our Common Home”, issued by Pope Francis in May 2015, contains some legal and economic aspects that go beyond a purely religious relevance, touching upon the political, social, and ethical spheres. The present contribution aims to identify these aspects of the Encyclical Letter, providing a brief reasoned analysis of its most interesting and relevant features, namely the emergence and the human origin of the ecological crisis, the critique of the dominant technocratic paradigm, the weakness of the institutional and legal international response, and the major paths of dialogue proposed by the Encyclical Letter to overcome “the spiral of self-destruction” which humanity is currently confronting. This contribution then focuses on integral ecology as the proposed solution to tackle the present ecological crisis and the call for an ecological conversion. On the basis of the analysis, a final section highlights some tipping points which are worthy of further comment, and contextualises Pope Francis’ views in the light of the most relevant scientific literature on these topics.

Discrete choice techniques are used to examine (incomplete) hourly sales data from a price comparison site. We find a strong relationship between e-retail sales to a given state and sales tax rates that apply to purchases from offline retailers, suggesting substantial online-offline substitution and the importance of tax avoidance motives. Geography matters in two ways: consumers prefer purchasing from firms in nearby states and appear to have a separate preference for buying from in-state firms. (JEL D12, H25, H71, L81)

AbstractDespite the fact that women's rights have been increasingly defined as equal to men's in law and policy, in post-Second World War Japan women continue to be at a disadvantage in many aspects of social and economic life. Drawing from a survey of 2,205 Japanese women, this article focuses in particular on women's home ownership as a new catalyst behind increasing social stratification in Japan. The women's experiences are closely linked to Japan's institutional ‘familism’: the development of social policy that has been explicitly connected to the male-breadwinner model. We argue that a wide range of institutional and policy practices – mortgage provision, property ownership, social security and taxation and labour market mechanisms – has combined to define the housing asset status of women. We discuss the women's current housing asset portfolio, and also recent socio-economic changes that have begun to redefine their position in a home-owning society. The case of Japan – a patriarchal but shifting home-owning democracy – contributes to our understanding of the contemporary dynamics of women's interaction between family, work and housing in the institutional context.

Abstract:
This study investigates how reverse knowledge spillover (RKS) generated through outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) promotes sustainable development in an investment home country. Economic, social, and environmental dimensions are the pillars of sustainable development and their indicators are developed upon the concept of institutional quality. To this end, we use a balanced panel of 30 Chinese Mainland provinces from 2003 to 2016 and employ a simultaneous equation model to analyze the data in order to observe the direct and indirect effects of OFDI-induced RKS on sustainable development. The current study adopts several indicators to capture the economic, social, and environmental aspects of sustainable development. Additionally, we classify RKS into two types, given the investment destinations in terms of developed economies and emerging economies. On the one hand, our findings confirm that OFDI-induced RKS from developed economies facilitates domestic innovation but negatively affects progress on social and environmental development. On the other hand, OFDI-induced RKS from emerging economies is not conducive to domestic innovation, but it directly fosters sustainable development.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectives:Food insecurity has become an important issue in many countries of the former Soviet Union following the transition to a market economy. This study examined three aspects of food security in the Baltic Republics: reasons for choosing foods; level of dependence on home-grown or raised foods; and use of home-grown vegetables.Design:Cross-sectional surveys.Setting:Data from surveys conducted in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the summer of 1997 were used to describe the three aspects of food security and their socio-economic correlates (using descriptive statistics and logistic regression).Subjects:Representative samples of adults were selected in each country (Estonia, n = 2018; Latvia, n = 2308; Lithuania, n = 2153).Results:Cost was the most commonly reported reason for choosing foods, particularly in Lithuania (67%) and Latvia (60%) (Estonia 41%), and especially among people with lower income levels. In each country, large proportions of respondents depended partially or entirely on home-grown or raised foods (Latvia 47%, Lithuania 42%, Estonia 32%) or used home-grown vegetables frequently (Lithuania 66%, Latvia 53%, Estonia 29%); this was particularly the case in rural areas. Conclusions:The issue of food security needs to be examined further in the Baltic Republics and other transitional economies as increased access to safe, healthy foods for all could help improve dietary intake and reduce the high mortality from non-communicable diseases. Access to affordable, high-quality fresh foods by different social groups should be monitored and the potential contribution of home-grown and raised foods to reduce food poverty should be explored further1.

Abstract:
Parental stresses are normal responses to raising children. They are affected by stresses parents and children accumulate and bring to their interrelations. Background factors like economic difficulties or the relations between the parents may affect parental stresses as well as demographic and environmental factors like noise and access to urban parks. Most studies on parental stress are based on a verified psychological questionnaire. We suggest using frequency domain heart rate variability index (HRV) to measure parental stress enabling, by thus, the measurement of physiological aspects of stress and risk to health. Parental stress is measured as the difference between HRV accumulated at home while staying with the children and without the husband and HRV measured in the neighborhood while staying without the children and the husband. We use the index to compare differences among Muslim and Jewish mothers in exposure to maternal stress at their homes and to expose the factors that predict differences in maternal stress. We found that Muslim mothers suffer from home-related maternal stress while Jewish mother do not. Number of children and ethnically related environmental aspects predict differences in maternal stress between Muslim and Jewish mothers. Muslims’ lower access to parks stems from lack of home garden and parks in their neighborhoods in the Arab towns but mainly by restrictions on Muslim mothers’ freedom of movement to parks. Despite differences in levels of noise at home and in the status of the mother in the household, these factors did not predict differences in maternal stress. Instead, the study highlights the crucial role of greenery and freedom of movement to parks in moderating home-related maternal stress.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyse the development of narrative macrostructure and the impact of socio-economic status (SES) and home literacy environment (HLE) on the narrative macrostructure of monolingual preschoolers in Germany when retelling and telling a story. The analysis of narrative macrostructure includes three components: story structure, story complexity, and story comprehension. Oral narratives were elicited via Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (LITMUS-MAIN). 198 monolingual children between age 4;6 and 5;11 participated (M=63 months, SD=5 months). The comparison of narrative macrostructure in three age groups (4;6 to 4;11 years, 5;0 to 5;5 years, 5;6 to 5;11 years) illustrate significant age effects in story structure, story complexity and story comprehension skills. There were weak significant positive correlations of some of these skills with aspects of socio-economic status and home literacy environment, for example between story comprehension skills and the educational background, the frequency and duration of the child’s exposure to books and the number of books in the household.

The authors analyze the state of international banking business before and after the global economic crisis of 2007-2009, and make predictions on potential future effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic on transformation of international banking and bank strategy. The analysis focuses on trends and changes in the two most important forms of trade in banking services, namely, cross-border banking flows, which include direct cross-border banking flows and local banking flows of international banks’ subsidiaries abroad, and foreign bank presence. It has been concluded that direct cross-border banking flows are more volatile than local banking flows of foreign banks during economic and social upheavals. The period under study has witnessed large increase in foreign bank presence, both in terms of number and local market share. The study determines changes of leading international banks and their home countries, highlighting the weakening position of banks from advanced countries and increase in the role of banks from emerging markets and developing countries. The authors review international expansion strategies of major banks from the post-Soviet states, that are influenced both by the opportunities and goals of banks going abroad, and by the institutional features of their banking systems; countries which these banks are targeting are predominantly comparable to the post-Soviet states in terms of economic development, and are chosen by criteria of their attractiveness, such as high level of trade and political relations with the bank’s home country, the presence of diaspora, the degree of saturation and growth dynamics of the banking market in the host country. The reasons behind the banks’ geographical expansion decision include, among many others, the dramatic growth of their economies, stimulated by the involvement in globalization processes, and liberal banking reforms. Obstacles of economic and non-economic nature that are hindering this expansion, encompass high level of competition in external banking markets, expensive financial resources of domestic banks, low level of expansion of the post-Soviet states-based enterprises to the non-post-Soviet states, discriminatory qualification requirements for personnel and composition of management bodies, problems related to banking licensing procedures and requirements, aspects of culture and communication; their transformation from local banks, operating in the local market, to banks with a clear manifestation of the tendency of their international expansion amidst changing global environment and uncertainty.

Abstract:
Abstract With the promise of better care coordination, better member outcomes, and lower costs, Medicare and state Medicaid programs are implementing population-based payment systems for older adults. Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are responsible for Medicare services for their members, Medicaid managed long-term services and supports (MLTSS) programs cover a broad span of Medicaid benefits, and some state initiatives enroll beneficiaries dually eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare and integrate benefits from the two programs. Simultaneously, Medicaid programs are attempting to shift LTSS utilization away from nursing homes and toward home and community based services (HCBS). The presentations for this symposium address aspects of this changing landscape using Medicare and Medicaid claims and other data and causal econometric models. The first paper considers the effect of MA utilization on SNF staffing, quality, and financial health. The second paper compares medical care utilization outcomes, specifically risk of hospitalization, for Medicaid nursing home residents to outcomes for similar Medicaid members receiving HCBS. The third paper presents an MLTSS initiative in one state in the context of national developments and considers the challenges of evaluating its impact. The fourth paper compares hospitalization rates for MLTSS populations to rates for dually eligible-beneficiaries not enrolled in MLTSS. The discussion will bring findings together to assess early gains and costs as these systems of care evolve.

Abstract:
Since the early 1990s, Iraqi Kurds have been relocating to the greater Binghamton area in New York State. This study focuses on the growing diasporic Kurdish community in and around Binghamton and their quest to imagine the homeland they left behind as a result of social, economic, and political hardships. The production of this diasporic space has emerged as an attempt to reconstruct their culture and collective identity in the absence of physical and territorially specific aspects of their homeland. Kurdish refugee narratives articulate how collective memory gives voice to the shared Kurdish past, how Kurdish refugees appropriated the space according to their traditional example and kinship structure, and how memories and narratives of the past shape the migrants’ identities, kinship, and everyday practices. The production of diasporic space within the imaginations of these refugees is portrayed here to show their attempt to reconstruct Kurdish culture while lacking the physical characteristics of their homeland. Their successfully reinvented images of homeland and reconstructed culture in diaspora are evidence of the resilience and fluidity of Kurdish culture.

Abstract:
With technological and economic development, people’s lives have been improved substantially, especially their home environments. One of the key aspects of these improvements is home intellectualization, whose core is the smart home control system. Furthermore, as smart phones have become increasingly popular, we can use them to control the home system through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GSM. This means that control with phones is more convenient and fast and now becomes the primary terminal controller in the smart home. In this paper, we propose middleware for developing a cross-platform Android/iOS-based solution for smart switch control software, focus on the Wi-Fi based communication protocols between the cellphone and the smart switch, achieved a plugin-based smart switch function, defined and implemented the JavaScript interface, and then implemented the cross-platform Android/iOS-based smart switch control software; also the scenarios are illustrated. Finally, tests were performed after the completed realization of the smart switch control system.
