Abstract Regeneration lag, the cost resulting from a delay in reestablishment of a forest stand, represents an important opportunity cost̶the cost of the foregone opportunity to grow timber over the period of the delay. The land expectation value (Le) criterion is used to evaluate the costs associated with one-time-only and perpetual lags. Significant decreases in wealth, or bare land value, were found using a simplified example with real-world cost and price data. Changes in required land bases resulting from regeneration delays were also reviewed. The additional land requirements resulting f

The notion of a cashless society is slowly becoming an inevitability of the modern way of doing business. Withdrawal of cash from use is the result of wide application of information and communication technologies. Increasing digitalization has contributed to the fact that most transactions are performed via smart devices (phones, tablets, desktops), without the use of cash and without going to the bank. The development of technological innovations, as well as innovations in finance, has undoubtedly contributed to increasing efficiency in business, but the question is whether the increasing di

AbstractBy Wednesday, July 22, 2020, the coronavirus had killed over 611,000 people and infected over fourteen million globally. It devastated lives and will continue to do so for a long time to come; the economic consequences of the pandemic are only just starting to materialize. This makes it a challenging time to write about the new common. However, we need to start somewhere. At some point, we need to reflect on our own roles, the roles of our institutions, the importance of our economy, and the future fabric of everyday life. In this chapter, I will discuss one minor—and compared to the current crisis seemingly inconsequential—aspect of the new common: I will discuss my worry that we are on the verge of missing the opportunity to properly (re-)define the role of the sciences as we move from our old to our new common.
