Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) populations from Southeast Alaska through British Columbia to Washington State have experienced similar declines in productivity over the past two decades, leading to economic and ecosystem concerns. Because the declines have spanned a wide geographic area, the primary mechanisms driving them likely operate at a large, multiregional scale at sea. However, identification of such mechanisms has remained elusive. Using hierarchical models of stock–recruitment dynamics, we tested the hypothesis that competition between pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and sockeye s

As their abundance has grown, so too has evidence that they are having important effects on other species and on ocean ecosystems. In alternating years of high abundance, they can initiate pelagic trophic cascades in the northern North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea and depress the availability of common prey resources of other species of salmon, resident seabirds, and other pelagic species. Corrective action by management agencies requires that the true causal mechanism be identified. Abstract:
Does monetary policy have economically significant effects on the real output? Historically, economists have tended to hold markedly different views with regard to this question. In recent times, however, there seems to be increasing consensus among monetary economists and policy-makers that monetary policy does have real effects, at least in the short run.1 Consequently, focus of monetary policy analysis has recently shifted from the big question of whether money matters, to emphasising other aspects of monetary policy and its relations to real economic activity. Hieracium caespitosum (meadow hawkweed) is an exotic invasive weed belonging to a complex of hawkweed species infesting nearly 500,000 hectares of pasture and wildlands in North America, primarily in the Pacific Northwest (1). Economic losses can be up to $222 per hectare (2). Despite prolonged effort, no promising insects have been found as agents of biological control of H. caespitosum. This has led to a greater emphasis on seeking plant pathogens such as rusts and smuts as potential biological control agents. Searches for plant pathogens have included Europe, which contains a portion of the

Abstract Gene editing is a technology that allows changes in the DNA of organisms from plants to animals, to humans. Its application in research has been around for a long time, and different techniques were developed over the years such as Zinc-finger nucleases, TALENs and more recently the CRISPR-Cas9 system. The latter has gained popularity for being much simpler to implement and at the same time being able to perform more precise edits with less off targets. Scientists and farmers have been using genetics selection to improve productivity and sustainability of agriculture for many decades

There has been a global shift in energy production emphasizing the reduction of fossil fuels by the augmentation of more renewable energy. Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) and anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFC) can mitigate a need for fossil fuels and provide an alternative route of hydrogen-based energy production. Fuel cells utilize a catalyst at both the cathode and anode to increase the overall kinetics of the redox reactions and enhance the cell performance.1 Current fuel cell technology employs a platinum based catalyst due to its efficiency and robust performance in b

ABSTRACTBiological invasions are increasing on a worldwide scale and can have severe ecological and economic consequences. Pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) have a native range in the Pacific Ocean but have been introduced and are now spreading in the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans, including Sweden. A comprehensive eDNA sampling scheme was conducted in 27 river systems in south‐western Sweden in 2023, with the aim to detect adult spawning pink salmon. We applied qPCR and dPCR analysis on aquatic eDNA samples. Results indicated the presence of pink salmon at 24 sites across 11 river syste

First, it analyses how imported consumer goods contributed to what is referred to as external constraints of the Argentinian economy. AbstractSelective breeding plays a vital role in the production of farmed Atlantic salmon and has shown success in many aspects. Still, challenges related to fish health and welfare continue to result in significant economic losses. Importantly, RFC/MFC has not been observed in wild Atlantic salmon, suggesting that both external and genetic factors may contribute to the development of inflammation. AbstractBACKGROUNDSome environmental enrichment (EE) methods, such as occupational enrichment (OE), can improve fish growth, but little is known about its effects on fillet quality. In this study, we evaluated the effects of OE using underwater currents, on different aspects of fillet quality and muscle metabolism in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), before and after a handling procedure (fasting). The trout were placed in groups of 30 in separate tanks in three treatments for 30 days: no artificial currents (CON), randomly fired underwater currents (RFC), and continuous underwater currents
