Abstract:
The ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan constitute a large-scale program of transformation of the key principles of the country’s development. The reforms are especially focused on the economy and this is reflected in Uzbekistan’s foreign policy, which is increasingly acquiring the features of “economization”. The strengthening of the trend towards economization is closely linked with the development of such a new component of Uzbek diplomacy as soft power, which is already showing its effectiveness at the regional level, bringing economic dividends as well. At the conceptual level, Uzbekistan's modern foreign policy creates the phenomenon of “multidimensional strategic cooperation,” which in turn puts the dominant view on the foreign policy of the Central Asian countries as multi-vector in question.

Abstract:
This article covers an analysis of socio-economic development of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the present time. The author reviews the main formation milestones for an independent state from 1991. He shows that the process was accompanied by a radical breakdown of the previous administrative command system, privatisation and demonopolisation, the introduction of various forms of market relations, and the creation of new industries. The author highlights, in particular, successful and unsuccessful attempts of the country’s leaders to raise the profile of the industrial sector of the economy and to make Uzbekistan an industrial state. The author sets a task to characterise the structure of Uzbekistan’s economy, to analyse indicators of gross domestic production, and to study the features of its development. The article discusses in detail the main parameters of the socio-economic situation in the country in 2018 – early 2020 and highlights the key factors contributing to the crisis trends in the economy of the Republic of Uzbekistan. According to the author, cyclical global crises and the coronavirus pandemic, as well as mass labour migration to neighbouring countries, should be recognised as key factors in that case. Special attention is paid to the analysis of various aspects of multifaceted cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan and joint projects implemented in various sectors of the national economies of both countries. The author emphasises that a new impetus to these relations was given by Vladimir Putin’s state visit to Tashkent in October 2018.

Abstract:
Entrepreneurship has become one of the most researched areas in recent years. Its importance has increased further by the emergence of the ‘transition countries’, the countries of Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. As the transition countries strived to overhaul their economic and political systems in order to bring them in line with the rest of the market based economies, entrepreneurship and private sector development became the focus of the transition debate among the scholars and policy makers. A major part of the scholarly interest centred on the factors that hindered the development of the entrepreneurial sector. Numerous surveys of entrepreneurs and business owners have highlighted extensive lists of the most common obstacles to the development of enterprises. While the international organizations have concentrated on these reported obstacles, some members of the scholarship community have identified much more fundamental issues that both stifle the entrepreneurship development and encourage rent seeking behaviour. This study has used the theory of the allocation of entrepreneurial talents to explore the roots of the most commonly reported obstacles that the entrepreneurs face in the context of economic and political transition in Uzbekistan. We use historical evidence in conjunction with the contemporary survey data and our own interview results to establish the relationship between the ‘rules of the game’ that determine the system of talent allocation and entrepreneurship development. Our conclusions support earlier claims made by Baumol (1990) regarding the importance of the system of incentives and punishments in the development of entrepreneurship.

Abstract:
This book analyzes the Central Asian economies of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, from their buffeting by the commodity boom of the early 2000s to its collapse in 2014. The book examines the countries' relations with external powers and the possibilities for development offered by infrastructure projects as well as rail links between China and Europe. The transition of these nations from centrally planned to market-based economic systems was essentially complete by the early 2000s, when the region experienced a massive increase in world prices for energy and mineral exports. This raised incomes in the main oil and gas exporters, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan; brought more benefits to the most populous country, Uzbekistan; and left the poorest countries, the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, dependent on remittances from migrant workers in oil-rich Russia and Kazakhstan. The book considers the enhanced role of the Central Asian nations in the global economy and their varied ties to China, the European Union, Russia, and the United States. With improved infrastructure and connectivity between China and Europe (reflected in regular rail freight services since 2011 and China's announcement of its Belt and Road Initiative in 2013), relaxation of UN sanctions against Iran in 2016, and the change in Uzbekistan's presidency in late 2016, a window of opportunity appears to have opened for Central Asian countries to achieve more sustainable economic futures.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the national economy and transition strategies of Uzbekistan. At independence Uzbekistan inherited important assets, including the best civil aircraft fleet, the military command, and the best administrative capacity in Central Asia. Indeed, during the 1990s, Uzbekistan was the most successful of all Soviet successor states in terms of limiting the fall in output, and in the early 2000s it became the first former Soviet republic to regain its pre-independence level of GDP. Uzbekistan was fortunate that world cotton prices increased substantially after independence, providing the resources to maintain public services, and when cotton prices fell in 1996 the government overreacted by introducing foreign exchange controls. A new phase of Uzbekistan's economic development dates from the termination of forex controls at the end of 2003.

Abstract:
In this study, the causality relationship between natural gas consumption and economic growth in the Caucasus and Central Asian economies (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan) exporting natural gas was investigated using the bootstrap panel Granger causality analysis developed by Kónya for the period 1993–2017. As a result of the analysis, a causality from natural gas consumption to real GDP for Azerbaijan and a causality from real GDP to natural gas consumption in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan were found. For Kazakhstan, the authors concluded that there was a bi-directional causality between natural gas consumption and real GDP.

Abstract:
Empowered women encourage economic development and assist in making stable societies, and everyone benefits from the growth and stability that empowered women add to the economy. According to a study by McKinsey, if the economic participation of women is promoted globally, especially in developing countries, then it might enhance world economic growth by $28 trillion dollars by 2025. In Uzbekistan disparities exist between men and women in education, health, employment and income opportunities, control over assets, personal security, and participation in the political process in the country. The women come across significant barriers which deter her to participate fully and freely in contributing to the economic growth of the country. The stereotypical image of women, where we revere her mainly as a mother, the guardian of family wellbeing, is rooted in the minds of people; it is true, but in today's world, she should not be an inactive bystander, but an active and proactive contributor in the currently going on democratic transformations in the country. There is no denying the fact that Uzbek women have made a considerable progress in the last few years, but they have to struggle against many handicaps and social evils in the male-dominated society. The empowerment of women is one of the solutions to the problems of inequality, subordination, and marginalization. A critical problem and a high priority for the Government of Uzbekistan are to improve women's role and empower them to take part in the economic growth of the world. This chapter speaks about the government initiatives in empowering Uzbek women and bringing gender equality in the society. The data for the chapter was collected from secondary sources. The objectives of this article are to examine and analyse the initiatives taken by Uzbek government and other UN bodies for gender equality and women empowerment. The same strategies can be replicated in other parts of Central Asia where women are still not treated equally and can be empowered to contribute to the socioeconomic growth. The current research may suggest the authorities and civil society organizations to improve and implement inventive methodologies to attain gender equality, advancement, and peace.

Abstract:
The goal of this paper is to analyse socio-economic role of value added agriculture in Uzbekistan. The main agricultural exports are cotton (raw and yarn), fruits, vegetables, leather, wool and fur. There is an opportunity to acquire more social and economic advantages by exporting finished goods, which are made out of primary agricultural commodities. Adding value to agricultural products lead to increasing the share of finished goods in export, supplying import-substituting products, improving infrastructure in rural areas, providing new jobs and growing people’s income. The paper presents the analyse of the agriculture sector in GDP and the production dynamics of the primary agricultural commodities during 2005-2014, as well as comparison the share of cotton, fruits, vegetables and leather in export in 2005 and 2014. Based on the analyses it is recommended to widely use value added agriculture in order to support people, who are living in rural areas in Uzbekistan.

Abstract:
In the 21st century, many global challenges such as the instability of economic development, social inequality of the population, climate change have escalated and posed a significant threat to the achievement of sustainable development goals. As is known, until recently, in many countries of the world, the model of accelerated build-up of productive forces was dominated by the extensive use of natural resources, which causes great damage to the environment. Thus, the implemented model of increasing production essentially provided "growth without development." Such a development model is typical for many developing countries, including the countries of the post-Soviet space, including Uzbekistan. Therefore, the world community has come to the conclusion that it is necessary to search for ways of economic growth that do not increase the burden on natural resources and move to a new model of sustainable development. Uzbekistan is currently receiving close attention from the international community and the country is striving to ensure the sustainability of development not only through the use of rich natural resources, but also through the transition to innovative development based on the principles of the "green economy". Only on this basis is it possible to achieve the goals of sustainable development in Uzbekistan.
