This article demonstrates the complex nature of the relationship between linguistic competence and the level of disempowerment that individuals perceive in global business contexts where English is increasingly used as a lingua franca. Most of the existing literature assumes that lower linguistic competence causes disempowerment, and that this relationship is largely static for individuals. This study, in contrast, finds that the sense of disempowerment caused by linguistic competence is negotiable as power dynamics between individuals can also be influenced by other relationships that act as

Much of what has been researched on Shona fiction has been limited to literature published before independence. The current research endeavours to assess the treatment of socio-economic issues as conveyed through fiction published since 1990. This fiction focuses on socio-economic issues in both pre-colonial and independent Zimbabwe. The study endeavours to establish if writers who focus on these issues in the pre-colonial era have been able to reclaim a complicated picture of the African pasts. Abstract This chapter examines James Boggs’s black power critique of civil rights. He argues civil rights did not go far enough in radically changing the white, capitalist power that shapes modern societies. The chapter argues that utopia is the work of replacing one form of power with a new set of justifications. Analyzing Boggs’s conception of black power shows that power for him is the capacity to develop new binding norms that will underwrite the economic and social patterns of a form of life. By breaking with the justifications of the present that naturalize black economic disempowerment,

‘Colonial India: impoverishment’ considers why India is poor and divided. India has been wealthy historically and so the ubiquity of poverty in contemporary India needs to be explained with reference to colonial history rather than imagined as somehow an inevitable feature of the subcontinent. Three phases in the imperial dominance of the English (then British after 1707) in India are identified and the ruinous impact of British imperialism is described. Despite the ‘impoverishment’ of India there were some positive aspects to British rule, particularly in infrastructural and institutional dev
