Various factors determine and affect economic growth, one of which is exports. Trade theory also states that exports increase the growth of the domestic economy in various ways. For this reason, the effect of exports on economic growth is a long-term area of research. This research aims to dispel the myth that export cartels should be prohibited because they restrain competition and, thus, holds back economic development. It also proposes the conditions under which export cartels promote economic development. In contrast to the myth, this research argues that, when it comes to economic development, competition is not always desirable and, therefore, that export cartels should be formed under certain conditions. In other words, the doctrine that maximum competition is optimal competition is not applicable when the objective is economic development. Moreover,

Abstract:
Abstract Nigeria's position as a major participant in the global energy market, especially via its natural gas exports, is crucial in this age of energy transition. Nigeria's enormous natural gas reserves have become an important part of the global gradual shift from conventional fossil fuels towards greener energy sources, providing a cleaner substitute for coal and oil. This study examined the economic impact of Nigeria's natural gas exports from 1999 to 2022, utilizing an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to provide a detailed analysis. Trade liberalization is one of the greatest economic arguments of the economics and it is claimed that trade openness is a crucial phenomenon for the well-being of nations since Adam Smith. Although various practices have been seen in different parts of the world in the history, from 1980s trade liberalization movements have been the dominant trend. However liberalization of trade in developing countries brought debates in economic literature and it is argued that open trade can have catastrophic effects instead of providing growth and welfare to the practitioner countries. Abstract:
We study the reaction of voters to shifts in local economic conditions. Using the departure from the gold standard of US trading partners in 1931 and the US in 1933, we exploit heterogeneity in export destinations, creating local differences in expenditure-switching in US counties by isolating the aggregate effects of the monetary shocks using time fixed effects. We find significant changes in local voting behavior in response to both shocks, one originating abroad, and another domestically. The response to both shocks have similar magnitude. We argue that voters punished and rewarded incumben

Abstract:
We estimate the effects of ICT capital and ICT use on firm output and total factor productivity in Ecuador, using a capital augmented production function. We study heterogeneities across 2 dimensions: (i) economic sectors and (ii) firm characteristics (size, export orientation, age, location, technological intensity, and knowledge intensity). Using a novel and comprehensive data set of 27,489 Ecuadorian formal firms and using 2 identification strategies, we find positive and statistically significant effects of ICT capital and ICT use on output and TFP across economic sectors, controlling for

While many studies explain the correlation between firm-level productivity and export status entirely by better firms self-selecting into exporting, a few studies find evidence of reverse causation. Especially in developing or ransition economies, exporters seem to improve performance after they start selling internationally. We provide evidence that the realization of scale conomies is one possible explanation for such a learning-by-exporting effect. Exporting enables small firms to expand output and exploit all scale economies that the production technology allows. With access to finance pro

We investigate the effect of domestic armed violence brought about by political instability on the geography of distance frictions in freight mobility and the resulting differential access of regions to global markets. The Colombian transportation system has been found to be impeded by deficiencies in landside transport infrastructure and institutions, and by fragmented political environments. The micro-level analysis of U.S.-bounded export shipping records corroborates that export freight shipping from inland regions is re-routed to avoid exposures to domestic armed violence despite greatly e

Export processing zones and other special regimes will be subject to extensive regulatory reforms as a result of the progressive insertion of the countries into international economy. On the one hand commitments with the World Trade Organization (WTO) impose the elimination of export subsidies. On the other, regional integration schemes will generally exert pressure for the elimination of tariff reduction and other taxes on import goods or equipments, which are incorporated or used as export merchandise to trade partners under those schemes. Abstract:
This paper investigates the sudden 2019 termination by the United States Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) of trade with India as a quasi-natural experiment. Given the re-election of Donald Trump and global concerns about the future of global trade, understanding the distributional consequences from past trade shocks can inform strategies to balance trade preferences with social equity. The impact of the GSP termination is examined with a triple difference-in-differences specification that controls for both country- and product-level export changes to estimate the impact of the terminati

This report presents the results of case studies on nontraditional agricultural exports in Petrolina-Juazeiro (northeastern Brazil), Ecuador, and Guatemala, analyzing the role of public policy in developing these products and the effects of nontraditional agriculture on the rural poor. This included an array of economic and sectorial policies in support of market functioning and private sector development, as well as active and strategic intervention aimed at solving specific problems. This brief assesses the impact of the European Union’s carbon tariffs on energy-intensive exports from Asia and the Pacific and shows how upgrading product value, boosting energy efficiency, and cutting emissions can help mitigate its effect. It explains how the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is designed to prevent carbon leakage–where industries shift to countries with less stringent environmental rules. Providing a regional breakdown, the brief shows how sectors including Indian steel and Georgian fertilizer are among those hit. It outlines how steps such as developing and integra
