Abstract:
Theories of regulation are many. No single theory however explains the observed contrasts in regulatory behaviour and no clear criteria exist by which to identify a particular regulation as according to one theory or another. This is because there is no consistent theoretical structure which links the various approaches. Such a framework is constructed here. A partial equilibrium model of regulation in a competitive, negative externality generating industry is formulated and the concept of a regulated equilibrium defined. Abstract:
This research aimed to explore the privileging of growth and its influence on planning in England. The research examined two contrasting case studies: Middlesbrough Borough Council and Cambridge City Council. The analysis of growth privileging is rooted within a constructionist ontology which argues that planning is about the way in which people construct value relative to the function of land. This perspective enables the research to position growth privileging as a social construction; a particular mental frame for understanding and analyzing place based challenges and an approach which has

Although run-of-river hydropower represents a key source of renewable energy, it cannot prevent stresses on river ecosystems. This is especially true in mountain regions, where the outflow of a plant is placed several kilometres downstream of the intake, inducing the depletion of river reaches of considerable length. In this thesis, multi-objective optimization is used in the design of the capacity of run-of-river plants to identify optimal trade-offs between contrasting objectives: the maximization of the profitability and the minimization of the impact induced by the plant. The latter is q

Asset management and automation are acknowledged by distribution utilities as a useful strategy to improve service quality and reliability. However, the major challenge faced by decision makers in distribution utilities is how to achieve long-term return on the projects while minimising investment and operation costs. Distribution automation (DA) in terms of transformer economic operation (TEO), distribution network reconfiguration (DNR), and sectionalising switch placement (SSP) is recognised as the most effective way for distribution network operators (DNOs) to increase operation efficiency

Prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) is high the world over, and in sub-Saharan Africa, between 30% and 66% of ever-partnered women aged 15 or over have experienced IPV at least once in their lifetime, and 37% on the African continent. Power imbalance in the household and unequal access to resources are often identified as triggers of violence. Microfinance interventions provide women with access to financial resources as well as soft-skills training (MF-plus). Evidence of microfinance’s impact on IPV is still however contradictory, often confined to observational cross-sectional stud

Abstract:
Agricultural production is an important source of environmental emissions. While water quality concerns related to animal agriculture have been studied extensively, air quality issues have become an increasing concern. Due to the transfer of nutrients between air, water, and soil, emissions to air can harm water quality. We conduct a multi-objective optimization analysis for a representative dairy farm with two different approaches: nonlinear programming (NLP) and ϵ-constraint optimization to evaluate trade-offs among reduction of multiple pollutants including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), gre
