This thesis consists of three self-contained studies on economic consequences of accounting standards. The first study jointly examines the informational value of pension liability recognition mandated in France under IFRS and its effect on firms’ financing decisions. We argue that changes in pension accounting information have affected firms’ required cost of capital and/or investing decisions. This is a thesis about the standardisation of food through ‘sustainability’ labels, like those signifying organic or Fairtrade status. It examines how the voluntary product standards that underpin such labels are enacted through the everyday practices of producing, certifying and marketing farmed produce. This dissertation attempts to integrate the household and children more fluidly into measures of well-being in the past. In part one, I develop a Monte Carlo simulation to test some of the assumptions of Allen’s welfare ratio methodology. These included his assumptions that family size was constant over time, that there were no female-headed households and that women and children did not participate in the labour force. Based on a variety of archival sources, this paper presents estimations for cost of living and living standards for Lima, Peru during the 19th century. During this century Peru experienced deep swings in economic activity marked by the independence wars, the War of the Pacific, and a commodity boom. These new series show that a sizable inflationary period during the guano age had dampeningeffects on the living standards of the popular class. The thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the fusion of the Peruvian cultural sphere and its respective economic environment based on method of synthesis. Dissecting a number of demographic phenomena, this complex study examines Peruvian cultural standards on the grounds of ethnic and linguistic observations along with defining the importance of national cultural heritage, and it investigates how these cultural standards affect the economic climate of Peru.
